This is the Spotify and streaming chart thread for April 2019, the go-to topic for the discussion of charts from UK streaming sites! This thread is mainly for Spotify chart discussion but also for Apple Music, Amazon and YouTube which all have a significant chart impact.

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. The desktop top 50 may update before anything else so is always worth checking if the website is not up to date. However recently it has been known to not to do (even when the website has), so do check all sources. Also note that the Spotify Website will update before external websites (Kworb, LivePopBars). Occasionally there will be a delay in the Spotify chart updating which could even take days.

How often does the chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although this is not 100% guaranteed. Sometimes the top 200 on the website will update but without the top 50 on the app updating, and sometimes there will be no update at all.

How many plays on Spotify equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. (Spotify will let you play a song on repeat 600 times if you really want to).

The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread. For information on what songs are currently on ACR and what songs will be moving to ACR, refer to this thread.

How much does Spotify contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole, although good paid-for sales are still essential for making the very top of the chart in most cases. Spotify counts for at least half of all streaming sales (probably, we can't actually be sure on that), so doing well on Spotify is essential for doing well in the chart.

Why is my fave not doing well on Spotify?

Is it being promoted on one of Spotify's major curated playlists? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists, with over a million followers. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist.

Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped artists/releases such as Justin Bieber/Ed Sheeran/Drake who will of course enter straight at the top.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Also this new Ariana song is credited to Ariana first after all, people lying in this thread the other day really wouldn't be surprised if it is another instant #1 for her still (although I think it's been released even later in the week than 'thank u, next' so it might still be a bit of an uphill climb).

I wondered if we'd see any Nipsey Hussle songs entering the Spotify charts - he's never been a big streaming force even in the US but of course following the news (RIP) it makes sense that some people would at least listen to his most recent release. Made more of a splash on US Spotify with 8 songs in the top 100, only 2 of which had ever made the top 200 before this.

Not technically true; its currently top 100 on iTunes and has been around 150-50 for a fair few weeks. When played by Radio 1 it has had significant boosts. Its been playlisted on R1 this week so should mean everything impacts at the same time

It's only its second push. The first was in mid-2018, when Alec wasn't signed to a label. Now it's being re-pushed as he's signed and the label want to make him a success (see also: the Alessia remix).

I find this a bit of a weird viewpoint anyway, do you hate songs that do well only on iTunes too? Labels will do what they need to to make a hit, and this is the perfect way for that in 2019.


Let Me Down Slowly is Alec's current single to be fair (he's actually put six out from his album, one a month from May onwards in 2018, but he's come back to this), but yes, I'd like to see Only Want You re-added too

Seems mad that Talk is only just peaking now. I know we aren’t really a representation of when the general public pick up music, but feels like it’s peak impact has been and went.

I was hoping Blackpink would be higher. Not bad for k-pop of course, but was hoping this could chart. Not optimistic it will this week based on that start.

Once again an artist performing in line with if not better than they've always done on UK Spotify is said to be 'underperforming'. 'Talk' at #10 today matches the highest position he's ever got as lead artist on UK Spotify (lower than 'Eastside'/'Silence'/'1-800-273-8255' but he was hardly the selling point of any of those). He's really not that huge a name, 'American Teen' never even made the top 40 here (admittedly it was very slow-burning but that's still not too high a bar) and even 'Suncity', released when he was already a known name, only got to #20. Why would he suddenly now be expected to get a #1 album and completely dominate Spotify when the lead singles have done nothing to indicate he's suddenly a much bigger deal?

In other news, 'Old Town Road' coming to be the highest charting country song since...? '(Barry) Islands In The Stream' I guess?

It should get higher than 'Calm After The Storm' by The Common Linnets as well. I feel like that might be the only country song to make the top 10 since '(Barry) Islands In The Stream'. Unless you count Avicii's country/folk inspired hits which I suppose are probably about as debatable as 'Old Town Road'. (And I suppose 'Shallow' could also be considered country ~)

It does still have some slightly serious undertones to it though. Some people are speculating that he's trying to hide his past because it hints at him being gay and he worries that'll harm his career considering how few openly gay rappers (and maybe even fewer openly gay country artists) there are that have had any success.

Yeah I'm really not a fan of YK Osiris' voice either, ruins what would otherwise be a decent enough song. I noticed that made the top 100 last week without ever cracking the top 200 on Spotify so figures that it must have been just outside it. Not surprised at it taking off, could probably see it becoming a 'Leave Me Alone' level hit.

Kinda surprised that 'Racks In The Middle' didn't make the top 100 last week but I guess it had pretty negligible streams for the first 2 or 3 days of the week, could enter this week. Nipsey isn't the most interesting rapper to listen to but I do quite like that song (mostly for the Roddy feature).

The problem with this is that it leads to inconsistent credits. We'd have had Beyoncé credited for a few weeks on Perfect and then it'd be back to Ed solo. I'd take consistency really (and for what it's worth, I agree with them on stuff like Perfect anyway, it's situations like Only Want You right now that bother me more when 6LACK is on the actual single mix yet isn't credited).

Honestly it's hard for me to get much invested in the OCC's crediting when they truncate everything and make the 'power standings' as it were unclear. Is there a lead artist or are they all co-credited on some of these UK rap hits? Who knows! Dan Caplen isn't even credited on "These Days" for seemingly no good reason other than it doesn't fit. They'd do well to just have some full official crediting somewhere on the page (even if it's just a mouse-over) if the idea of lengthier credits destroys their chart presentation.

don't think it's the same as Perfect cos there were 3 versions, solo, with Beyonce, with Bocelli
all 3 were being bought/streamed in high numbers so they couldn't do a proper credit, I understand it,
they couldn't credit Beyonce and Bocelli at the same time and only crediting 1 was also unfair

here there's 2 versions being bought/streamed, with or without Billy Ray Cyrus,
so I think it's all up to the label or the occ
but he can be easily added no problem, especially if he's contributing significantly to driving the song up the charts

Perhaps, but the same could've been said before the Bocelli version existed of Perfect. It's still the same principle. This case could also be compared to The Hills by The Weeknd. The most popular download version, for a while at least, was the Eminem remix, but Eminem didn't receive a credit as it wasn't the primary single version. Another example is Alicia Keys' Girl On Fire. I remember the original and Nicki version were pretty well matched on iTunes for its entire run, but no Nicki credit as the main single mix was the original. This is why Billy Ray Cyrus is unlikely to get any credit from the OCC.

Calvin is really no threat
Lewis declined for there first time last Friday, so still 2 weeks for sure on normal rate, this week and next

but there's also Billie and Lil Nas X, both are ahead of Lewis on streams, th latter could eb the real threat, he's already on 700K and don't think those levels of streams are possible for a regular dance track like Meduza even if it's a million times better

That's great to see! Very small drop for Avicii which probably means 'SOS' has a decent chance of going top 10 either this or next week. Hopefully we get a good top 50 effect for Europa too, they're top 20 on Apple Music so the hit potential is there, it just needs additional Spotify exposure.

The album isn’t even platinum and the album has never been discounted in iTunes, so definitely not owned by everyone in her casual fanbase. It is 3 years after release still and didn’t have any singles properly pushed, so don’t think it will make much immediate impact still. Definitely will help it in the long run with her streaming audience.

Amazing stuff, he will be big. I was surprised to find out he was originally a SoundCloud rapper. But he's (thankfully) changed his genre and the EP is full of indie rock bangers. Got Kings of Leon/RHCP vibes from a few of them.

I think it would’ve spent longer in the charts and even had some top ten singles too.
But I don’t think it still would’ve been in the top 100 now 3 years after release if it had been on there from day one.
ANTI left the top 100 ages ago and Rihanna is a bigger streaming name than Beyoncé.

Yeah, 1m is far too optimistic as I’ve just checked Spotify and ME! has 10.2m WW streams on the Spotify counter, so it’ll prob have 8m officially WW.

Stormzy has 1.15m and I imagine most of those will be from the UK.

LWYMMD opened with 5.3m streams so yea that's definitely worse. However, it's her only huge opening to date during the streaming era and coming from the mega successful era so not fair to think that all songs will open that big.

Taylor's doing fine, not quite as well as I expected but equally not awful. Look What You Made Me Do was always going to get off to a better start because it was off the back of the hugely successful 1989. ME! has reputation has a springboard which is far less impactful! It probably won't be a #1 debut but I have no doubt it'll prove itself as a solid hit long-term and set the era up pretty well.

Keisha & Becky has been top 10 for two weeks though?? I guess personal opinions don't have much to do with the chart.

True; to be honest I don't like either song. But I was more suggesting that it was the fact the update was so late (which didn't stop Stormzy, or the rest of the top 5 gaining or staying put), that the quality of Taylor's song may also be a factor in the fact she's had such a drop.

Maybe I should've said not to people's tastes then. Either way with good positioning on playlists, the most obvious reason for a drop is that it didn't gel with the people streaming rather than 1 playlist not updating given it hasn't hindered other songs which are in worse playlist positions that Me currently is.

Taylor is doing fine!!

Big in your face pop never slays on Spotify and very rarely on day 1. Arianas No Tears is an example of how I think ME! will perform.

The song will outsell LWYMMD in the long run I think even if it peaks lower I think it’ll enter at #3 this week.

Her paid for sales will be strong as well.

I had a feeling Taylor's immediate impact wouldn't be so great this time considering it's following an era that was far less of a big deal than '1989' on the whole, not producing any particularly enduring hits. She's doing fine really, should still manage to be a fairly big hit with decent longevity I'd think. It's a decent song imo but hopefully she has something better on the way, not seen a lot of positive feedback for this one on the Internet. Very impressed at how well Stormzy's comeback has done though - at the moment it looks like he probably won't beat Lil Nas X to #1 but I wouldn't rule that out totally, could see him pushing it hard on social media in the latter half of the week to try to get over the line like Dave (and to a lesser extent JAY1).

Lil Nas X is releasing another Old Town Road remix tonight. It's unconfirmed who it's with.

He's also said his next plan is to try and get on the Billboard Rock Chart - I wonder who he will collab with for that one?

I think it's been rumoured / known for a while that he was making a remix with Young Thug as well, I don't think that will have too much impact if that is the case. What might have more impact is if he drops an official music video which has also been rumoured to be happening pretty soon.

Really hope Stormzy gets it. It's no "Big For Your Boots" but I'm really enjoying it a lot (video is stellar too). For how big the UK rap scene is at the moment, it feels a bit strange that only "Funky Friday" has gotten to #1 in recent years.
