I still haven't seen The Dark Knight (oops...) so this ranking is probably completely useless as I'm sure it would massively change if I had seen Ledger's performance..

I quite like all of these but none really stand out to me, all did good jobs but it's hard to pick a winner as they all have things that bring down the performances.

1 Michael Shannon "Revolutionary Road"
2 Josh Brolin "Milk"
3 Philip Seymour Hoffman "Doubt"
4 Robert Downey Jr. "Tropic Thunder"

Michael Shannon - Ended up having to go for this because at least he is a massive scene stealer. He's in about two scenes so I definitely could have done with seeing more of him but you can't stop watching his character when he's on-screen. I guess it does help that it is a very showy role though, I far preferred him here than in "Nocturnal Animals" where he stole the nomination for Aaron Taylor-Johnson sad.gif
Josh Brolin - He did a decent job for the whole film but he was only really impressive right at the ending. He is overshadowed by the far showier role from Sean Penn so you take little notice of him until his turning point in the film's finale but ultimately he doesn't have enough wow moments to be my winner here.
Philip Seymour Hoffman - He does a good job here too but I always thought there was very little doubt to be had with the way he portrayed the character of Father Flynn because he just seemed so obvious about it whereas I'm sure his performance would have benefited if his intentions were portrayed a bit more ambiguously by him.
Robert Downey Jr. - He's definitely the standout of the film so I can see why he was chosen but I find the film a bit over-rated to be honest and barely laughed at all (it peaked at the start with the fake trailers to be honest). Plus, the whole blackface thing feels a bit disrespectful (I'm surprised he avoided controversy even just 8 years ago!). Would love to see him doing more awards friendly films again though, he has heaps of talent but playing Iron Man is the only thing he seems to do nowadays sad.gif

I'd have probably frauded Michael Sheen into supporting actor for my final spot as I'd love to see him get recognised but Lead Actor was very strong.. Maybe James Franco for Milk too who did a decent job in Milk and is rather under-rated in terms of awards and serious acting roles sad.gif
