I don't really understand the list? Why are only some singles and some albums included? A lot of them seem to be debuts but some aren't (like Olly Murs single and album listed and One Direction album)?? Sorry I'm just confused

For instance, I've included the best selling One Direction album - this wasn't their debut but their best selling album (in week 1). It is rare that an acts second/third release isn't their best selling (unlike the majority of the others which are the debuts). Like I mentioned in the opening post, there are no multiple entries, and so I just included the best selling One Direction album (for example).

Apologies for the confusion.

Posted by: Froot. 26th July 2015, 05:43 PM

Is it the highest selling?

EDIT: woops bit late~

Posted by: Juranamo 26th July 2015, 08:04 PM

So essentially, this is a list of each X Factor acts' highest first week sale (for albums and singles)?

Correct. I have edited the opening post to make this more clear to readers of this thread.

It's odd because when I was reading about Andrea's album sales on Friday and wondering how he stacked up against other releases by X Factor alumni so thanks so much for putting all the figures together. I wonder how Ben Haenow's album and the next X Factor winner's single are going to perform

I think the fact he was mentored by Simon will mean him and Fleur receive the full Ella/1D/Leona in terms of the team they work with and subsequent material & promotion. Only the Young, also from the last series have a single coming out soon so it'll be interesting to see how that fares.

Posted by: Hassaan 4th August 2015, 05:41 PM

I have added cumulative sales to the above post. It looks like it'll be an X Factor top 2 this week on the singles chart with 1D at #1 and Little Mix at #2.

I have listed cumulative sales (i.e, totals) along with the debuts.

The cumulative sales of Cher Lloyd's and Diana Vickers’ albums are both in excess of 100k+ (they are both certified gold) and not listed here.

Swagger Jagger’s sales are 200k+ as of 2011. Once has sold 204,000 copies. Bleeding Love has sold at least 1,180,000 copies and Bad Boys 860,000 copies.

It interesting to note all winners debut are their best singles and albs except little mix laugh.gif laugh.gif they are actually at their most successful 4 years after winning

Posted by: 777666jason 14th December 2015, 07:09 PM

It's crazy to note that the week same difference debuted at 22 they sold 31k shocking how much sales climate has changed

Posted by: Juranamo 14th December 2015, 09:58 PM

Over 30,000 people with amazing taste, I still adore 'We R One' and 'All the Roads Lead to Heaven' off that album! The 2nd album (that completely missed the Top 200 iirc) was even better!

Posted by: Jimmy Jam 15th December 2015, 12:44 AM

YAAAAAS! Same Difference are a real x-factor gem. We R One is still ma jaaam

I know I saw this thread and instantly had to go find We R One again played it 5 times in a row yahoo.gif yahoo.gif yahoo.gif

Speaking of which it's missed from the first post of 3rd place singles

Was also a shame the the lead single only, shine on forever, from the second album only hit 100 it should have gone higher I think a problem with the pre orders lost it some sales at the time wacko.gif

Giving this a little bump... Do we think threads like this (in addition to other threads which list sales for a certain group of artists) should be stickied in this forum?

Posted by: danG 7th July 2016, 04:35 PM

No, we already have enough pinned topics and there are quite a lot of these sorts of threads at the moment.

Posted by: Hassaan 29th July 2016, 07:17 PM

Calum Scott is the newest success from the talent show vault. Really impressive to see how he's crept up the charts over the past few months.

Posted by: Hassaan 20th July 2023, 12:11 PM

The opening post has now been updated with a (hopefully) neater formatting.

There's a couple of BGT hits missing: Susan Boyle - Wild Horses and Gabz - Lighters.

Neither of those have a certification on the BPI website, so we don't know how they've done in total (roughly anyway).

They've definitely done less than 200,000 though.

Posted by: Dobbo 21st July 2023, 08:51 AM

Interesting. I'm surprised Bars & Melody made it then given their track lasted even fewer weeks on the chart!

Interesting. I'm surprised Bars & Melody made it then given their track lasted even fewer weeks on the chart!
If we look at them:

44,491 - Gabz (#6, 2013) - 6-19-36-37-51-65-90-out (7 weeks)
40,191 - Bars & Melody (#5, 2014) - 5-31-54-out (3 weeks)
29,571 - Susan Boyle (#9, 2009) - 9-13-30-34-57-77-out (6 weeks)

A total of 104,500 for Gabz (by the end of 2013) is quoted http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=161619.

Bars & Melody's single was released in the streaming era, which might have helped their total.

Interesting thread. I'm also surprised that Bars & Melody song has built up over 200k sales.

Just one small thing I noticed in the OP, Clean Bandit ft Louisa Johnson was Tears not Forever Young. I assume it's Tears that has 880k sales and not her flop winners single.

There's nothing about it on his Wikipedia page, so I'm guessing he doesn't like to shout about it! Having done some research, no-one turned during his audition...but he's gone on to almost certainly be the 2nd best-selling artist from the show!

I know it would just be a lot more work, but it would be interesting to see how these compare with Pop Idol, Popstars and Fame Academy artists!

The video of his audition was on the BBC Voice UK page but it has since been taken down.

It might have something to do with a video he did on his channel a year or two afterwards where he "exposed" the show. That video doesn't exist anymore either; he spoke about the behind the scenes stuff but all of it was only a revelation to those who somehow don't realise The Voice is a television show.

I have updated the original post with what I could find for those additional shows.

Posted by: Hassaan 19th August 2023, 09:58 AM

Cian Ducrot became the first Voice UK contestant to achieve a number one album last week.

Posted by: Hassaan 7th October 2023, 05:18 PM

I've updated the original post with some extra X Factor numbers.

If anyone's able to get hold of up to date numbers for everything it'd be really appreciated. smile.gif
