PRE-SEASON CHAT / EPISODE ONE DISCUSSION

QUOTE
RuPaul brings the award-winning global phenomenon to the UK for the first time. Ten of the country’s most fabulous drag queens will compete in the Olympics of drag in the hope that RuPaul, queen of queens, will crown them as the UK’s first Drag Race Superstar.

Gonna trial individual episode threads for this - apparently the premiere has been brought forward to late August so just over a month to go!! Hype, we can have the non-spoiler pre-season stuff and eventual first episode bits here!

Posted by: blacksquare 4th August 2019, 05:13 PM

I didn't realise we were so close — it makes sense though. It does seem like they have started hyping it more on Twitter recently.

How do we think it's going to do? A big success for the brand as well as BBC?

I just hope the quality is just the same as the US version, if not better with all the potential UK references.

is bbcthree an iplayer thing now or?

Posted by: Liаm 5th August 2019, 09:04 PM

Yep Jake, it's still a channel kind of but it's not a proper channel on the TV, the content just goes on iplayer to watch on a certain day rather than it being broadcast on TV say at Thursday on 9.

I was hoping for August as rumoured but I had a feeling it'd be later when we didn't get any news by now laugh.gif Still hype *.*

We really are going straight from UK to All Stars to Season 12 back to back?

And then possibly the Canadian version?

Omg gay rights

Posted by: Envoirment 7th August 2019, 06:32 PM

Omg I can't wait. I've been having a bit of drag withdrawl - I've been keeping clear of spoiler threads/any videos to do with RPDR. I can't believe it's only a couple months until the first season of Drag Race UK!

Here we go!

Posted by: kye 21st August 2019, 08:56 AM

the queen i’ve taken to the most coming out of the starting blocks is baga chipz - i just love that kind of humour and her deirdre.. omg!

they all look kinda promising though, looks like we’re in for a good season!

Posted by: HausofTove 21st August 2019, 09:12 AM

Can't wait! Although not the most diverse of casts considering how diverse a country we are. Excited regardless though ~

Posted by: Conanderella 21st August 2019, 09:42 AM

Blu is the only British drag queen I follow on instagram so I'm excited as visually she's incredible. Let's hope it doesn't turn into the Silky situation as she had been the only one I followed prior to season 11 :')

Posted by: cantthinkofaname 21st August 2019, 09:48 AM

Looks good. Excited to see what Baga and Crystal bring to the table. Anyone know if this is Crystal Lubrikunt? Because I've seen her live but I don't remember what she looks like at all lmao.

I believe it’s Crystal Beth

I loooove everything about Baga APART from the fact she's a massive Tory nocheer.gif

Blu is the other I'm most interested in too, but I feel like she could go either way - hopefully she's not too much style over substance as I loooove her look so much. The Vivienne is amazing too from what I know and her Kim Woodburn made me howl rotf.gif

Posted by: RobBob 22nd August 2019, 12:32 AM

A very interesting mix! Divina and Cheryl seem like they'll do quite well from what I know of them but I'm very interested by Scaredy Kat. A bedroom queen who quite literally doesn't perform at all... but is actually really quite appealing as a personality. I wonder if she'll be a bit of a Season 2 Tatianna?

Posted by: Envoirment 22nd August 2019, 12:37 AM

The Vivienne better do Kim for snatch game *_* Really happy with the queens we've got. It looks like we'll get a nice mix of skills (lip sycning/fashion/comedy etc). Hopefully this won't be a design-challenge heavy season though... laugh.gif

Agreed! I couldn't stop laughing at the stamp look. laugh.gif

I wish Vinegar managed a triple reveal for the 3 rule count - but she gave some entertaining moments during the lip sync. Poor Gothy - looked so nervous/stiff/awkward. Her going home first was the right decision.

I have to say I'm enjoying this better than the US version so far - mainly because I can relate more and understand a lot more of the references.

Posted by: HarryEzra 3rd October 2019, 08:08 PM

I thought she would win too but im happy with the winner regardless

Gutted that Gothy Kendoll was eliminated I loved her in the promo looks etc so was really excited for her but she needs more confindence and her looks weren't her best sadly

Posted by: Cameron 3rd October 2019, 08:10 PM

Sum Ting Wong was incredible.

All the Essex / London queens are trying a little bit too hard. Baga Chipz is very annoying rn giving off Silky teas. Gothy Kendoll lacked personality completely.

Posted by: Liаm 3rd October 2019, 08:14 PM

Gothy was really out of her depth, for a "looks queen" there just wasn't a lot there and the personality was incredibly lacking. That lipsync was awful, she was like when you're in a club not drunk enough so you only let go 10% rotf.gif

Posted by: George.keh 3rd October 2019, 08:34 PM

What a fun episode! Cheryl, Vinegar and Blu are early faves for sure. I can see a top 3 of Vivienne, Baga and Cheryl/ Divina

Posted by: HausofF 3rd October 2019, 08:41 PM

Sum Ting Wong was incredible. She got the Birmingham look nailed and her Queen look was easily the best too. She won both runways and yet still didn't come out on top!?

What an episode though - I got every reference pretty much. This is a dream come true lmao!

Posted by: ElectroBoy 3rd October 2019, 09:03 PM

Shame about who went; but I guess it was a confidence thing (also the lip sync battle was a massacre really)

Scaredy Kat is intriguing

The prizes seem a bit sparse must be said

Apparently due to it being on the BBC they aren’t allowed to publish the cash prize???

Sum Ting Wong was robbed, Blu should have been more than safe too!! Really not liking Baga Chipz and there's something quite cold about Divina.

But I am LOVING it, so entertaining and everything I wanted from it. Can't wait for the acting challenge next week wub.gif

Posted by: Jay ☆ 3rd October 2019, 09:25 PM

Sum Ting Wong is my early fave - served two incredible looks! Definitely robbed. The creativity of both looks seemed on a level up from who actually won, hmm.

I loved all the familiar references. Mentions of Nadine and Kim Woodburn! laugh.gif

Gothy definitely seemed uncomfortable and out of her depth... a shame, but quite clearly she had to be the one to go.

Posted by: Simon. 3rd October 2019, 10:18 PM

Sum Ting Wong runway was hilarious! Started the episode thinking wow they all look so unpolished now I’m dying to see next weeks. Scardy cat is hideous however.

Posted by: Simon. 3rd October 2019, 10:19 PM

Omg and that Irish one Blu I think? Needs to just stop being over emotive on the shots talking out of drag.

I love Baga (for now, idk if she'll get to be a bit much by the end) but I agree about Divina, I'm not sure about The Vivienne either, so it's a shame she somehow won. I'd have personally put Blu in the top over Vivienne alongside Baga, with Sum Ting Wong obv winning.

Divina just has that Delta Work mean girl vibe at times, like she's been doing drag longer (the longest of any of them I assume) and has already had great opportunities such as All Together Now, so she is so much more entitled to do well or be loved than the rest.

Sum Ting Wong and Blu are my faves from the first episode but Cheryl really surprised me too, I was kind of expecting a nothing there kind of queen but I really liked her!

Posted by: Rhoda Camel 4th October 2019, 04:18 AM

Sum Ting Wong is FABULOUS. Really loving the Viv though - I expected her to be a right show but she's actually very warm and fun as well. Happy with either as winners tbh but just really wish the Viv wore a heel for the Pete Burns look (I appreciate authenticity but it was such a great outfit that could've held a high heel). Really liking Vinegar Strokes as well and Blu Hydrangea is just the cutest thing in and out of drag - bless her.

Gothy Kendall... honestly??? I have to say though, when you talk about UK Drag I've definitely seen this queen about. One who thinks they're a look queen yet are completely DEVOID of any charisma, so I guess it's true to life?? I would much rather have someone like Vinegar who isn't as made-up aesthetically but can absolutely sell you with a performance. Very much miscast I would say.

I absolutely died when Alan was talking about Gothy looking like a real estate agent. Hilarious!

Posted by: 365 4th October 2019, 07:31 AM

That was one of my favourite premieres ever. It was so...wholesome. Vinegar's entrance omg!!!

Sum Ting Wong Was robbed of a win! Lip sync was tragic but I can't wait for more.

Posted by: Lukuzz 4th October 2019, 07:37 AM

It really was an absolutely fantastic first episode, so much more instant than the US version for me. 9 out of 10 of them really have something about them. Unfortunately Gothy seemed completely out of her depth and didn't bring anything to the table.

Sum Ting Wong, The Vivienne and Baga Chips really shone for me. Think Divina, Cheryl and Blu are fab too.

I think Vinegar is a brilliant performer just lacking in the aesthetics part but I don't really care that much about that. Scaredy Kat seems to be very much looks and her personality is annoying me a little bit but she has something. Crystal seems a bit beige so far hope she brings something extra soon.

Posted by: f 4th October 2019, 07:59 AM

am i the only one a bit disappointed that they didn't actually have to SEW their own shit? like what was even the challenge? bring a couple of costumes from home? bring on the next episode where it turns out they were given the script months in advance as well :')

Blu was robbed of a Top 3 spot and I was hoping Sum Ting Wong would win the challenge as well (seems like a common theme in this thread, oops).

Posted by: f 4th October 2019, 08:00 AM

I was CRINGING at Gothy's runway presentation and even moreso the dreadful lipsync. Poor Dua Lipa sad.gif

Posted by: f 4th October 2019, 08:01 AM

also

at least they all didn't come out wearing kimonos :')

Posted by: blacksquare 4th October 2019, 09:08 AM

They really have nailed this. It didn't feel like some budget Drag Race spinoff. I loved how fresh and rough around the edges it was — like the earlier seasons. The British humour translated so well and Ru was so present for it all. I'm impressed.

(justice for sum ting wong)

Posted by: linds 4th October 2019, 10:18 AM

omg i loved this so much, the humour is exactly what i wanted like we got a nadine coyle, kat slater and a kim woodburn reference all in one episode *.* cheryl is my favourite right now, also liking baga tbh!

i actually thought the vivienne was one of the worst tho oops. i think im the only one not warming to blu, idk why either tbf. her look reminds me of a cross between blair and aquaria.

It was exactly the same as the Gaga episode, neither of those were sewn either. The challenge is to make best impressions and show who you are as a queen.

ADORE

Posted by: RobBob 4th October 2019, 06:17 PM

I was at the biggest of the Birmingham viewing parties and we were MAD not to see our girl Sum Ting Wong take a deserved win! The Vivienne is great though, I wouldn't have had her win this episode but she seems a stand out in terms of the whole show. Her entrance look was in a league of its own and she carries herself like a confident winner.

I'm obsessed with Baga Chipz, she IS the heart of British drag. Poor Gothy, she just... shouldn't have been there, poor thing.

Posted by: LexC 4th October 2019, 06:57 PM

Hey, if Gothy Kendoll can be a drag queen then SO CAN YOU!

This is such a good cast though, definitely feels like they've got a representative of all the different styles and genres of drag represented in the ten queens, excited to see how the dynamics play out on more performance based challenges.

Posted by: Theonix 4th October 2019, 07:05 PM

Echoing the love for this episode, a great start to the series and I love that they interpolated a mini Untucked within the episode, I only started watching Untucked for the first time last season and it definitely felt like it dragged (lol) too long, so this was the perfect balance for me.

Gothy was definitely the right one to go, bless her. I thought her entrance and promo looks were really strong but her personality was just non-existent. Alan's comment on her estate agent face paint was a scream! 😂

Cheryl was probably my favourite based on first impressions, her Essex queen look was the best and I don't think she particularly deserved to be bottom three. I loved Blu's Queen Elizabeth the most of the royal looks

Omg this would have rivalled Sum Ting Wong's stamp look for me as the best of the episode!

Posted by: Klimawechsel 5th October 2019, 12:17 PM

Giving this a go for the first time! I've only watched the premiere of season 10 before so still quite fresh to this! My favourite two by far were Sum Ting Wong and The Vivienne who embodied both their looks really well. Think the Bull Ring look was my favourite overall!

Gothy Kendoll though? She didn't bring anything of note at all? Plus a personality dry as a cream cracker. The segment where Ru was trying to get her to sell her line for the headshot said it all really. I could've done a better job. Alan was absolutely right with his comment about her, did she think she did a good job?

I'm really glad Vinegar stayed as I think she can give a lot more and she has one of the best personalities of this bunch.
