How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. The desktop top 50 may update before anything else so is always worth checking if the website is not up to date. However recently it has been known to not to do (even when the website has), so do check all sources. Also note that the Spotify Website will update before external websites (Kworb, LivePopBars). Occasionally there will be a delay in the Spotify chart updating which could even take days.

How often does the chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although this is not 100% guaranteed. Sometimes the top 200 on the website will update but without the top 50 on the app updating, and sometimes there will be no update at all.

How many plays on Spotify equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. (Spotify will let you play a song on repeat 600 times if you really want to).

The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread. For information on what songs are currently on ACR and what songs will be moving to ACR, refer to this thread.

How much does Spotify contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole, although the #1 still can be decided by who has better paid-for sales. Spotify counts for a good chunk of streaming sales (although it appears to be losing some market share as Apple Music and Amazon Music gain in popularity), so doing well on Spotify is essential for doing well in the chart.

Why is my fave not doing well on Spotify?

Is it being promoted on one of Spotify's major curated playlists? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists, with over a million followers. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist.

Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped artists/releases such as Justin Bieber/Ed Sheeran/Drake who will of course enter straight at the top.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

apparently this Drake project is a mixtape and not a proper album, and 'only' 13 tracks long, so if it's real it won't mess up the Spotify chart as much as Scorpion did (as it had 25 tracks and was promoted heavily by Spotify with it being an official album) - though Toosie Slide will likely get a big boost from it regardless.

Drake is definitely going to #1 officially next week then. Either with Toosie Slide (which will get a big boost from the mixtape release) or one of the new mixtape songs. I remember More Life being huge for a mixtape release. I'm sure this one will be bigger.

This new Drake mixtape apparently includes the other Future collab song that's been on SoundCloud for a while but not on streaming platforms, as well as a collab with Playboi Carti that I've seen a bit of buzz for already in the past week or so. So depending on where they are in the tracklist those might be big. I am sure every song will make at least the top 40 if not the top 20 on day 1 regardless though.

Drake posted the official tracklist on Instagram now - this mixtape also has 'War', 'When To Say When' and 'Chicago Freestyle' on it for their debut on streaming services (previously released on YouTube and nowhere else). And there are actually 14 songs not 13. x

Well it is his job. A lot of rap artists write their own songs so it's not surprising he has a lot of material building up, he gets paid when he releases music so why wouldn't he want his music out there being consumed. It's not like Drake is a pediatrician who writes music in his spare time

This Drake mixtape is half composed of songs that were already out but not on streaming yet + a few songs that leaked a while ago - it's kind of like another 'Care Package' that he's just dropping in the gap before his next full album, except there are actually a few new songs this time (and the 'old' songs aren't anywhere near as old as the stuff on 'Care Package').

Honestly I think he might have just released it due to quarantine boredom just to get more #1s for the sake of it lmao (it'll be his 10th(!) #1 album in the US, assuming it'll very easily get there).

'Dark Lane Demo Tapes' will be his 12th project to appear in the album chart in the US! The only ones to not get #1 are the two versions of 'So Far Gone' (it was originally a free mixtape so wasn't eligible to chart but a commercially released shorter EP version of it got #6 in 2009, and the belated full streaming release of the original mixtape charted at #5 last year).

He only has 5 releases that are officially 'albums' ('Thank Me Later', 'Take Care', 'Nothing Was The Same', 'Views' and 'Scorpion'), all of which got #1 in the US as did the mixtape 'If You're Reading This It's Too Late', the collaborative mixtape 'What A Time To Be Alive' with Future, the ""playlist"" 'More Life' and the compilation 'Care Package'. Your mileage may vary on what the actual distinction between album, mixtape, EP, 'playlist' etc. is.

including 2,3,4 & 5
guess will be the same tomorrow on Spotify
but surprisingly the release hasn't pushed Slide back to #1

The Live Lounge Allstars song is still holding up amazingly well on Apple - it's still at #9 even with so many Drake tracks debuting ahead of it (it's the third highest non-Drake song)! I expect it'll start to drop off pretty soon but looking like a decent sign that the song may not have as sharp a drop-off as 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.

From the Apple Music app, there is one version of TS (at #1)
Drake then has the whole top 12 except #6 which is The Weeknd and #11 which is Roses
Drake's also at 15, 16 and 18 and Live Lounge is actually #34.

Ugh Drake is unfortunately at this point where he could release ANYTHING and it'll do well. Ed is probably as well. I don't think either will see a decline in the immediate future either.

I can't think of ANY female artist who could get away with his laziness and be successful with it. Even Ariana - she didn't do as well with 'Boyfriend' and 'Monopoly' for those reasons and also received criticism for releasing too much in a short period of time. The music industry is so backwards.

This gives us a good reference point to see in a few months when Drake drops his proper album if indeed the marketing difference between 'albums' and 'mixtapes' is significant though. Feel free to quote me if I'm wrong but I'm almost certain his summer album is going to do a fair bit better than this has done - by Drake project first day standards this hasn't really been that big so far. (Of course having 6 of the top 10 and 14 of the top 30 is still huge but Drake is one of the couple of artists for which that level of success is pretty much what you expect).

The online reaction to the Playboi Carti collaboration seems to have been nearly universally negative, unsurprising that it's the highest album track on day 1 as it had the NMF playlist spot and was the most hyped leaked song but I wouldn't be surprised if it gets overtaken by several other songs pretty quickly. For what it's worth, that track and 'Toosie Slide' aside, I feel like the general reaction to this online has been slightly better than that to his last couple of projects.

Only on about the same level as Ariana's 'boyfriend' (and with a much lower peak than that had), if you're citing that as an example of an underperformance then 'Money In The Grave' definitely fits that description as well. He also had 'I'm Upset' as a single from his last album that made nearly no impact at all (and as I mentioned in the quoted post 'Signs' was also a pretty middling hit comparable to the Ariana examples you posted), he definitely isn't completely guaranteed major success with everything he releases.

I'm not really sure why 'Money In The Grave' wasn't a bigger hit tbh, I think it's one of the better singles he's released in the past few years and it definitely wasn't as lazy as songs like 'Toosie Slide' and 'Life Is Good' that have done much better this year.

I, for instance, hadn't heard any songs from the album apart from Toosie Slide and I listen to a new music A LOT. While some 500k Drake fans around the globe are familiar with Chicago Freestyle, most people definitely are not.

Also, Pain 1993 is heavily pushed by Spotify on its playlists so there is clearly some marketing for this project.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is no 4th single and they release a brand new track or a collab instead. That's the new normal in terms of album campaigns these days, release lots of singles before the album, the final single released on album release week and then that's it. Spotify doesn't seem to give much push to post-album singles for some reason (ie Taylor - The Man) and can only think of South of the Border as a successful post-album single for an album that has done well.

Albums that are HUGE on arrival do typically tend to struggle with post-album releases. Dua's debut wasn't instantly huge on the scale that Future Nostalgia has been, so it was easier to get post-album smashes - plus the fact both New Rules and IDGAF were undeniable hits in the first place too.

Other examples of albums that failed to get a post-album single to take off in the streaming era include Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber (with Purpose), and some haven't even tried - see both recent Ariana albums.

Other recent post-album smashes include Bruises and Falling but these definitely go against the grain.

I don’t get why though? Do Spotify just not support them? I get that more people know popular album tracks with streaming etc but it’s still rare (another album that was paid dust with post-album singles 🙃) that the wider general public will know many album tracks particularly off pop girls.

It's partially a Spotify thing at times, I'm not sure all the good girls go to hell got much support for Billie for example (at least, not on the scale of bad guy and everything i wanted). That wasn't a huge sales smash either though, nor was Company by Bieber despite it being one of the most popular songs upon Purpose's release. Another example could be Ed's Happier, released as the fifth single from Divide but you'd never know if it weren't for Radio 1 playlisting it!

Billie's All Good Girls barely got any support on Spotify... but the clearest example of lack of support has been Taylor - The Man, zero support on Spotify
even Harry - Falling, this has been a hit but Spotify has supported it zero... it's been on HH but always super low... if Spotify had given it a tiny bit of support it would have been a top 5, top 10 minimum...

and urban artists are the same, Post Malone has released nothing post-album after Circles from his new album... Drake released In My Feeling with the album launch but nothing after, same with Stormzy etc...

I do feel like both Dua and The Weeknd could get one with their eras if the single is pushed by the time Don’t Start Now and Blinding Lights are less popular. It seems now that performances or a big video impact can help out with singles taking off post album release but now it’s sort of more common to get more from an album before it’s released when in the sales era you’d tend to get like one or two singles max then the campaign begun after album release idk.

Having heard this Drake mixtape now there aren't really many songs on there that sound like enduring hits ('Toosie Slide' is basically the only one), it's very obvious that it's a collection of throwaways. Probably fair to say it's still been a bit of an underperformance even considering but I'm not surprised that people aren't going back to these songs as much as those on previous projects!

Wouldn't say it's the worst thing Ariana's ever done but it doesn't do much for me. Though it's hard to judge as I generally find Bieber's vocals so whiny and grating - though on a great song (i.e. "Sorry") it doesn't seem to matter.

Jeez reading some of the comments about the Ari/Bieber track I was expecting a god awful track of Toosie proportions. The song is listenable although nothing spectacular. I can't see it being remembered in five years time but it would be a hell of a lot better than having Drake at number one for another week.

I think it’s like Cry Me Out but can sort of hear a hint of Rihanna’s Love On The Brain.

Far from being either of their worst tracks though it’s better than Justin’s last few tracks and I’d say it’s better than both boyfriend and don’t call me angel by Ariana too!

Given the insane numbers he's pulled elsewhere I was fully expecting this song to shoot straight to the top 10 minimum on streaming, only #41 on Apple after 17 hours isn't really that big a deal in comparison. It's at #2 in the US behind 'ROCKSTAR'.

It was released around 7:30pm UK time yesterday so that debut is just from the first few hours. Still only #31 on Apple after 21 hours though. It is already huge on YouTube but perhaps less so otherwise, although we'll see how much damage it does with its first full day on Spotify I guess.

Great to see 'Tequila' peak again thanks to good weather but it's a bit late now, if only it had happened last week then maybe it could've avoided ACR.
'Secrets' also finally out-doing its Day 1 position is great to see, hopefully it's coming for the top 40 officially this week especially as it's doing a lot better on Apple (#22).
Also nice to see 'Be Kind' make the top 50, I'd welcome that being a hit.
And don't get your hopes up re; 6ix9ine's low position as he only had a few hours, I expect he'll be well inside the top 40 in tomorrow's update (he's #27 on Apple).

Didn't anticipate VE Day having quite this much of an effect on Spotify, it's like the first day of December with all these old songs coming back except this time it's even older songs, most of which I've never heard of.

6ix9ine seems to have stalled at #2 on Apple Music in the US, #25 in the UK and I expect he'll probably start dropping pretty quickly (I can't see this having much longevity). It'll probably go top 40 but looks unlikely to be a second top 10 for him.

And yes that at #170 is a Toploader cover (which is actually originally by King Harvest), and it's from 2018 too, one can assume TikTok may have something to do with its belated appearance. Funny enough Toploader are actually higher in the chart today at #119.

Great to see Mr Probz 'Waves' is now part of the club of old songs in the chart too, re-entering at #139! 'Wake Me Up' back in at #175 too.

Dancing In The Moonlight is not a good song as it is not possible to dance to. Always include at weddings/cheese room things and kills the vibe completely. I've seen so many Instagram ads for this Jubel track recently like ridiculously more than any other song I've seen on there. Maybe a factor too in its rise?

It's quite similar in style actually to the Toploader cover, the main difference is some different timing with the lyric flow



The Jubel cover is nice enough but rather underwhelming. It kind of confused me that they have the same artist name as the hit by Klingande a few years ago.

I actually have no idea but it's significant. Songs have gone top 100 officially on the strength of good Apple streams, the Sam Fischer track is one example that took off on Apple well before it did elsewhere.

but they're not 50-50 either cos the Friday positions are always closer to the Spotify position rather than the Apple position

and songs can do very well on Apple but if they do nothing on Spotify, they miss the top 40
one recent example is Juliet & Romeo, peaked at #13 on Apple a month ago, but was not doing enough on Spotify... so missed the top 40

Not quite, I'd say it has slightly more influence. I don't think Amazon back then was pushing songs top 100 without any good iTunes position.

I'd say Amazon are the streaming equivalent of themselves, except of course during Christmas.

It has been but the other sites just don't attract much discussion. See also the Amazon specific thread that only got about 2 pages.

It's sort of been a de facto general streaming thread anyhow with a few loose Apple updates around what's mostly Spotify discussion, I wouldn't want to remove Spotify from the title of the thread however.

I kinda think it had a bigger impact last year but it seems to have less impact now

I remember there was a week that Rover was already #4 on Apple but still starting to climb slowly on Spotify so there song did 21-13-13 in the charts despite being so high on Apple...
there are many other examples, Harry-Falling has had 3 different stints in the top 10 on Apple but always been lower on Spotify, so he missed the top 10 in the official charts...
this new dance song, Don't Need Love, it's been already top 10 for a while on Apple but only just made it top 50 on Spotify now, so it's only been top 40 in the official charts...

I feel like the Spotify/Apple Music/whatever it's called thread should be weekly alongside iTunes. It seems silly to have a weekly iTunes thread and a monthly Spotify thread in 2020.

I switched to AM in February and pop songs seem to always do better there, I don't know if it's better playlisting or what. Although the people I know that are really really into rap all use AM rather than Spotify so idk

The Say So remix has had a big boost on Spotify today up to #17, taking over the original - wonder why it's suddenly gotten bigger. Its also up 25 places on WW Spotify back up to #24, did it get a good playlist placement or maybe they are combining multiple versions now?

When I looked at the play counts for Say So two days ago, the Original Version of the Remix and the other version were definitely showing different counts, but today they are the same. I think they must have just combined them today, which explains the boost.

Seems like Spotify is turning into Apple Music with Pop Music doing worse and worse. Unfortunate. Even Dua probably wouldn't be top 10 without having BMH in Hot Hits twice 😬.

Hopefully Gaga and Ari manage to do inject a bit of life into the top 10 for a while if the song is good.

It's not that surprising that hip-hop has taken over the Spotify charts recently - new tracks from Drake, AJ Tracey, Travis Scott and KSI who are all varying levels of big names, plus TikTok hits like Blueberry Faygo and Rover, plus a mix of both for ROCKSTAR I suppose? And the inexplicable popularity of 6ix9ine Pop's not dead on Spotify, we'll have loads of pop dominating again soon, we've just had a concentrated period of lots of big hip-hop hits.

I'd say Spotify in the UK is doing everything they can to support pop, Hot Hits is always supporting pop
but just now there are not many big pop songs being released
look at Spotify in the US where 90% of the top 50 is urban and you won't complain anymore about the UK

It is because the album is split into 3 parts and the first 2 parts were individually released as EPs - but even then, those EPs were for the most part dropped one song at a time (iirc 'Creepin'' and 'Sudden Desire' were the only songs that were released simultaneously (when the part 1 EP was released), all the other songs were released individually). But yeah, it did kind of blunt the excitement for the full album knowing that there were only 5 new songs on it, at that point she may as well have just made it 3 separate EPs.

The 1975's situation is a bit different because their album is much longer (there are still like 15 new songs on the album) but it is still a little excessive I agree!

Yeah I miscounted myself usually I wouldn't want that many released, but there's 22 songs overall so I'm alright.

For Hayley, I was hesitant of the release strategy - but I think it worked for me overall! I found myself listening to each of the EPs several times when usually I'd probably have cherrypicked my faves after the album release. I imagine we'll see more albums released like that in the future?

I quite like Daisies on first listen but it doesn't wow me. I just don't think mid-tempo Katy generally works. She needs to serve another Never Really Over. She's proven she still has what it takes when she really tries. I half wish she'd just go away for a few years and work on creating magic rather than releasing mediocre singles constantly. It does her image no favours.

I think Gaga and Ari are more likely to get the #1 than the Bieber collab. The pure sales will be big. I imagine and hope it will get a bigger push on HH. It will also have a proper music video and may end up being more of a 'moment'. Not to mention Stuck With U is extremely boring, if it was any good I think it would have got the #1.

I wouldn't be so enthusiastic, don't forget Spotify/Apple are dominated by kids listening to urban not pop
and even the most perfect and great pop songs (ie Dua Lipa) struggle in front of urban songs that easily reach #1
DaBaby is still growing and so far has little playlist support... will still be hard to beat in a week's time

(I found the old Spotify thread and it looks like 'boyfriend' dipped out of the top 10 on its 9th day so if 'Stuck With U' holds up in the top 10 for one more day it will have beaten at least the opening run that managed )

Regard & Raye are doing very well on Apple, almost top 10...

Apple Music seems to be better at pushing dance tracks, Breaking Me, Don't Need Love, Flowers and Secrets are all between #8-13 now
Spotify always seem to push just the 1 dance song at a time and mostly it's generic stuff like Lonely or covers like Flowers
