See the update above. Drake just ahead of Florence on albums, could still be either of them going to #1. Meanwhile in this week's episode of 'thank god for the artist cap', Drake would have 23 songs in the top 40 at this stage.

Posted by: Lomadz 2nd July 2018, 01:29 PM

Interesting! Imagine if Drake was selling CD's, he would be far ahead. Confident he will pull away now though!

Posted by: Bjork 2nd July 2018, 01:30 PM

thanks for the early update
is the YT data in? if so, really looks like zero effect

nice to see Florence with 30K and so close to the king of spotify payola biggrin.gif

Posted by: danG 2nd July 2018, 01:33 PM

I don't think YouTube is coming this week based on that as surely Maroon 5 would be top 10 if there was YouTube?

Posted by: LeeWallace 2nd July 2018, 01:38 PM

I expected Drake to easily be #1 on the album chart ohmy.gif!

Posted by: Bjork 2nd July 2018, 01:40 PM

well, something has changed cos sales are much higher relative to last monday

1 George Ezra - Shotgun (18.6k)
2 Clean Bandit feat. Demi Lovato - Solo (16.5k)

Yeah, it’s odd that Maroon 5 aren’t top 10.

Posted by: gavindeejay 2nd July 2018, 01:48 PM

I was hoping Gorillaz would be double the figure they are. Looks like they may have to settle for #5.

Posted by: LDLDLDLD 2nd July 2018, 01:49 PM

All the Drake songs are officially uploaded on YouTube, but you need a a YouTube music subscription. The views for each video are other 100k. Which is surprising seeing as you need the subscription.

OMG Pull through Ms. Florence Welch!

Posted by: omrimayo 2nd July 2018, 02:07 PM

Why People acting like they are surprised? Florence is huge in the UK and an album seller, It can go either way.

Posted by: Dexton 2nd July 2018, 02:35 PM

These Days is benefiting from YouTube isn't it? It was #41 last week and is decreasing in Spotify & iTunes, yet has climbed back into the Top 40 I assume because its Top 20 in Video Streams

edit: Also re:Maroon 5, Girls Like You is #21 in Spotify if you take out all but 3 of Drakes songs and then only just #9 in iTunes. I imagine it'll climb into the Top 10 by Friday though

Posted by: Tedward 2nd July 2018, 02:56 PM

Drake better pull through with Scorpion, I only really liked about half the album but I still like it more than what Florence did with Higher Than Hope

Posted by: The Snake 2nd July 2018, 03:02 PM

Yeah, doesn't look like video streams have been added yet, to take two examples, M22 and Medina would be a few places lower and Dappy and Ay Em a few places higher I think with video streams.

I am sure they will be added for the final chart this week, this is supposed to be the first week they will be used!

biggrin.gif Spice girls were just as manufactured as Westlife if not more FFS, I can't take you seriously, I really can't.

So if I listen to Florence on Free Spotify, on mute tho, as want to save the album for Xmas tbh, will it count towards the chart vs that neoliberal late capitalist globalised sterilised super compressed hook filled repetitive tuneless dirge? Or only if I buy the spotify suscription?

Posted by: Bjork 2nd July 2018, 03:08 PM

I actually think they have been added, cos sales are higher than last week
but the contribution is small as expected, I was expecting 5k for M5 come Friday, 3K for Ezra or Solo, 2K for 2002, so sounds right to me

x Maroon 5, they should be low top 20 without YT, and just outside the top 10 with YT, so sounds about right

Well no? Westlife were a covers band that was literally HANDED CDs of old songs by Louis and Simon and told that was their next song. Spice Girls managed themselves, wrote their own lyrics and had the song of the decade with Hollier.

Video streams *ARE* present but there is missing data from YouTube for both Saturday and Sunday plus Amazon, Spotify and Apple Music streaming for Sunday.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 2nd July 2018, 03:38 PM

Drake’s lead will be larger as the week goes on id imagine. Florence’s pre orders will have been high and I don’t think Scorpion had a pre order and as streaming data is added he’ll push further. Hope Florence can keep top 40 in the singles.

We've already been through this, stop pointlessly bashing Drake for the sake of it in every single thread that he comes up in laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

(And to answer your question, that would count towards the chart, but free Spotify streams are now valued way less than premium ones, so there's no real point tbh)

They did say it wouldn't affect the chart that much anyway. Remember most YouTube views will be at 600:1.

Drake and Florence and the Machine are much closer in sales than i expected.
Has Florence any chance of overtaking Drake?

I assume Youtube Music which has a higher 1:100 ratio will not have that big an impact yet as having only just launched, it isn't that big yet in terms of subscribers compared to Spotify Premium or Apple Music? unsure.gif

Posted by: Bré 2nd July 2018, 09:05 PM

Wow at how close Drake and Florence are in the first update! Drake will pull ahead from this point onwards though I'm sure.

'Don't Matter To Me' to end up being the highest Drake track in the singles chart I'd think, although might be settling for 'only' a #2/3 debut. I've not heard that or any other Drake album tracks yet but it's nice to see George heading for a second week at #1 anyway, outlasting the single week at #1 aided by the 59p boost for the last two #1s before it! Hoping 'Hunger' can maintain a top 40 position throughout the week as well, its current #41 peak is pretty frustrating as it's another great track from them.

But it wasn't awful imo though, it was a good tune I thought! People were buying it probably a mixture of the artists being Snapchat famous apparently and the fact the song was refreshing as there are very few 'dance bangers' around these days making the charts.

Pity they didn't release a YouTube video at the same time, the combo of both itunes top 3 for a time and a well streamed video could have sent them low top 40.

It's okay just as a dance track, but the lyrics.... christ

Awww it's a shame that Three Lions doesn't look likely to crack the top 40 this year. It managed it in 2014 despite the fact England didn't even win a single match! (Yes yes I know streaming wasn't counted back then).

Posted by: RockafellerSkank 2nd July 2018, 10:18 PM

Get Messy was heavily aided by pre orders and being held back which is why there was an instant reaction and a quick fall, a very quick fall

Posted by: John-James 2nd July 2018, 10:20 PM

I don't know if I'm being crazy or not but this Drake release has been a bit of a disappointment imo. 1) I thought the Spotify numbers were kind of on the low side for probably the craziest Spotify promo I've seen. 2) I was expecting an instant #1 debut on the singles chart, even more so after seeing the song they were pushing was an MJ collab. 3) Only 900 sales separate him and Florence? Really didn't expect that. Shocked that its going to be debut will less sales than his random mixtape last year considering this has been preceded by God's Plan and Nice For What whereas that More Life only had Fake Love.

Posted by: Bjork 3rd July 2018, 05:25 AM

and that's with many people streaming random songs from his album not the whole thing
imagine if the occ counted album streams properly as in only when people stream an album 75 or 90%, he'd get 3k sales I bet biggrin.gif

but agree, if you consider the album has Gods plan and Nice for what, it's a total underperformance, and that's not even considering the spotify payola

biggrin.gif Spice girls were just as manufactured as Westlife if not more FFS.

Sorry to make the thread go off topic, but I couldn’t pass up on replying because... this really isn’t the case!

Spice Girls were formed via auditions, so yes in that sense they were manufactured. That’s not the whole story though. Within a year they left the management that formed them. Whilst without management, they wrote their own material/recorded for their debut album. With songs ready to go and a unique image that was cultivated by the girls themselves, it was at this point that they sought new management / a record label. Once they became successful and famous, they continued to write on every song they released. Barely a year into their fame they once again left their management and opted to manage themselves. With the amount of control they had over their own act, they definitely weren’t a typical manufactured pop group.

Westlife were brought together by Louis Walsh, and subsequently released music that was either written for them, or presented to them (i.e. numerous cover versions).

I don’t think anyone with a real knowledge of these two groups could seriously claim that the Spice Girls were even more manufactured than Westlife.

Anyway, back to Drake / streaming discussions cool2.gif

Posted by: Supercell 3rd July 2018, 11:51 AM

I think we could be seeing the effect of the new rules coming into force quite nicely already.

Don't Matter To Me has had 600-700k of daily streams on Spotify since Saturday so surely he should be ahead of George but he's only on 20k. Granted George is only 4k ahead but he's been on 450k on average so I cant help but think theres a fair chunk of free subscriptions counting towards Drake's Spotify total and therefore lowering is overall sales units. Again I could be wrong and it might be Drake leaps ahead on the next update when the missing data comes through.

Not sure if I want DMTM to be no1, I'd love nothing more than MJ to finally get that 8th no1 but it just doesn't sound like him on that song. I don't know if its just me though.

Posted by: Bjork 3rd July 2018, 12:31 PM

^you realise itunes data counts for the charts and shotgun is selling 10 times more than drake/mj? it's not only spotify that counts

Posted by: Dobbo 3rd July 2018, 12:48 PM

But iTunes probably counts for less than a tenth of what Spotify does towards the Charts now so that's that negated.

Posted by: Queef of Skreech 3rd July 2018, 12:54 PM

Not with the new paid up/ free streams split. It eould appear the people who pay the subscriptions aren't big Drake fans which doesn't surprise me. They probably prefer real music, seeing ss they are paying for it.

Posted by: danG 3rd July 2018, 12:58 PM

Drake does even better on Apple Music than Spotify and there is no free version of that minus the 3-month free trials, which can't account for most of the Drake streams, so your statement has no basis in fact.

QUOTE(danG @ Jul 3 2018, 01:58 PM) *
Drake does even better on Apple Music than Spotify and there is no free version of that minus the 3-month free trials, which can't account for most of the Drake streams, so your statement has no basis in fact.

Only college hipsters use Apple Music. They play what they think their friends think is cool during the breaks on speakers.

But iTunes probably counts for less than a tenth of what Spotify does towards the Charts now so that's that negated.

do you follow the charts? itunes has been decissive last few weeks and again this week
if things are close on streaming, itunes makes a big difference, ezra is gonna get 10-15k sales more than drake on itunes
that will make him #1, otherwise he wouldn't

iTunes has a really low share of the overall "sales" each week now. But towards the top of the chart it has a much bigger effect.

For example when we're talking about the songs charting at #10,000 (if the chart went on that far), the average song might be getting about 97% of its points from streaming, but when we look at the very top end of the chart (which we are now since we're talking about George Ezra and Drake), it probably counts between 10 - 20% for the average song in that region.

Last week George got about 35% of his points from sales I think (which I think is much higher than average for nowadays), whilst for the singles market overall it's only about 6% determined by sales, at least in the formula the OCC uses.

So I would say iTunes is still important for when we're talking about who will be #1.

Awww it's a shame that Three Lions doesn't look likely to crack the top 40 this year. It managed it in 2014 despite the fact England didn't even win a single match! (Yes yes I know streaming wasn't counted back then).

If England do the unthinkable and actually go on to win the World Cup, I wonder how high Three Lions could get then? Top 10?

Screaming at this. My mum uses Apple Music! For people who don't already stream music first buying an Apple Product, Apple Music is becoming the norm. It makes up 30% of paid streams now which is actually a rather large proportion!

so sales are much higher than last week, Ezra was doing 8k a day, now he's doing 12k a day
guess it's cos the new streaming ratio rather cos of YT, guess theres more premium people than we thought

Posted by: SKOB 3rd July 2018, 06:53 PM

Those album numbers for Drake are really underwhelming. Florence's are not super great either but she lacks hits, Drake has three of them pre album and a new one

Posted by: LDLDLDLD 3rd July 2018, 06:59 PM

The physical copy for Drake's album isn't out yet. I'm not sure why they've decided to do that. Some people I know can only play CDs in their car and don't have bluetooth, I'm sure it will sell well.

Posted by: SKOB 3rd July 2018, 07:13 PM

More Life didn't have physical copy either and it opened with 67k. Views' first week was 78k, that too was digital only. With growing streaming in general, he should be able to at least those numbers

the vast majority of Drake's fans don't even download albums let alone buy CDs, it doesn't really make any difference when or if they release a CD version. looking good for Scorpion going to #1 this week anyway, he is doing brilliantly.

Without knowing the figures for the first half of the year under the new rules, it's hard to say how this week's figures compare.

Posted by: Dircadirca 4th July 2018, 11:07 AM

Major hip hop album releases almost never get a simultaneous physical release because it's too easy for them to leak, which hurts far more in the long run.

(Well that and a lot of the time, the albums are still being finalised; JAY-Z mentions X's shooting in his verse)

Get in Drake, thought it would be a close battle but Drake is selling great, can see the album being a consistent seller as there are a lot of commercial hits on the album. Need to give Florence a listen to as well.

QUOTE
It's coming home... England's definitive football anthem, Three Lions, is set to return to the Top 40 on this week's Official Singles Chart.

Following England's dramatic win against Colombia on Tuesday night, OfficialCharts.com can reveal that David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seeds' track is surging up the chart, currently at Number 35 in today's Sales Flash (counting sales and streams from last Friday to midnight on Wednesday night) - up from Number 56 on Monday.

It means Three Lions could make a glorious return to the Top 40 when tomorrow's Official Singles Chart is announced (July 6) - ahead of their quarter-final match against Sweden on Saturday.

Three Lions was originally written for Euro '96 and spent two weeks at Number 1. A re-worked version of the song with new lyrics for the 1998 World Cup, Three Lions '98, spent three weeks at the summit. Look back at both songs' week-by-week chart runs.

The song is one of the UK's best-selling singles of all time, with both versions combined having sold 1.6 million.

Three Lions' famous lyric "it's coming home" originally referred to England hosting its first major tournament since the 1966 World Cup. 22 years later, the phrase has a broader meaning - that England will win it.

Find out where Three Lions finishes on this week's Official Singles Chart tomorrow at 5.45pm. Listen to the Top 40 being unveiled live on BBC Radio 1's Official Chart show with Scott Mills from 4pm, while the full Top 100 will be revealed on OfficialCharts.com.

No mention in that OCC quote of whether it's on ACR or not? I'm guessing it is because of the new 3-year rule, but that could make the difference between it being #10 or #35, or conversely between it being #35 or #85, so it's quite relevant. Why let facts get in the way of a good story seems to be their view.

Posted by: Bré 5th July 2018, 08:39 PM

It is on ACR. But bear in mind that it has a disproportionately high share of its chart sales from actual downloads, so being on ACR won't be affecting it as much as most other songs.
