The BBC and many other broadcasters around the world are in a quandary as the men's singles final at Wimbledon is at 2pm and the World Cup final in Russia at 4pm BST on Sunday 18th July 2018. Both are usually broadcast live on BBC1 but the tennis probably won't be over. They also need a build-up for the football. What if Murray and England are both in the final? Appeals are being made to push back the WC final a couple of hours. If not it's been suggested that Wimbledon starts the final at 12 or 1pm or have it Saturday and the women's final Sunday as that's shorter.

My solution - play the last 16 on Sunday instead of Monday. Quarter finals Mon/Tue. Semi finals Wed/Thu. Womens final 6pm on Friday evening. Mens final Saturday.

There's absolutely no chance of the World Cup final getting moved to a different time. I think it's more likely that the final of Wimbledon will get moved to the previous Sunday.

Yeah I think The World Cup final is a bit more important than the Wimbledon final so that ain't getting moved. Surely this must have happened on another occasion in the past.

I think they'll start Wimbledon on BBC1 then if it's a slow burner switch it to BBC2. That's what they did when Grands Prix clashed with major football tournaments.

Apparently it can't be as the tennis calendar from January and the Australian Open is already finalised so Wimbldon can't start a week earlier now. Wimbledon is from this year two weeks later than it used to be. I remember when the finals were on the first weekend in July, not the 3rd weekend.

That sounds feasible. Wimbledon will do something as FIFA are apparently refusing to budge.

Can't see the start of Wimbledon being moved to other week. Sunday has always traditionally a rest day at Wimbledon. It's impossible that the World Cup final will be moved at all. We'll see what happens there.

Auntie beeb does have 2 prime time channels. One will get each. Probably the Tennis on BBC2.

There is no chance that England makes the WC final though.

Yes but England fans apparently do tend to be rather overhopeful.

Btw, Common Sense are you trying to reinvent yourself on the Sports Forum now? Is this your first thread here?

Last thread from him was:

Just put the World Cup on BBC 1 and The Wimbledon Final on BBC 2. Problem sorted.

Lol, No and no, as someone has pointed out. Why, am I not welcome in here? tongue.gif Just thought it was worth discussing that's all.

By the way, just read elsewhere that the BBC are bound in their contracts with both FIFA and Wimbledon to show the finals on "one of the major channels" so not necessarily BBC1. Can be BBC2 but not BBC3 or 4 apparently. Can't see a problem really.

I don't remember it happening in the past although that doesn't mead it hasn't happened. For a long time Wimbledon finished on the Saturday rather than the Friday which will have avoided any clash.

The World Cup final has an unusually early kick-off time. 4pm UK time will be 6pm Moscow time.

July 18 is also unusually late for the Wimbledon final.

As I said earlier, Wimbledon seems to have got 2 weeks later now. Used to be the last two weeks in June with the finals the first weekend of July.

We usually have the WC final around 7pm BST but FIFA want it at 4pm BST so it's then 8-11am in the US and a more amenable time in most other countries too.

Assuming the dates cannot be changed the logical solution would be to start the Wimbledon final at midday. If there is any chance of rain they could close the roof for the start of the match.

There could be other similar contracts with overseas broadcasters who only have one "major" channel.

Yes, apparently RTE in Ireland are angry, saying they are contractually bound to show both on RTE1 which would be impossible if Wimbledon went beyond 4pm.

Wimbledon was changed for players to have a break from after the French Open. It's been since 2015 that a gap was introduced of three weeks
