22nd May 1994

2 weeks on top for Enigma, holding off Deep Forest and confirming that this month, at least, I was being a new age hippie. Re-entering, and high, at 6, is Guns ‘n’ Roses version of 50’s oldie Since I Don’t Have You. I love the song, I’ll be honest it’s not the definitive version (see Don McLean or the original 1958 The Skyliners doo-wop version), but it’s only their second Top 10 hit 5 years on from the first (Sweet Child ‘o Mine).

Lots of new entries, including some album tracks, as I was allowing one track per new album now - good news for Blur as the epic To The End enters, but also bad news for Blur as Parklife is pushed out under the rules. Highest new entry is Maxx at 10 with their European dance smash. East 17 and Elton John go top 20 (Elton’s a cover of Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell’s 60’s classic, an Ashford & Simpson song), while Neneh & Youssou climb to 27 in a bit longer than 7 seconds.

Returning: Shara Nelson, Joe Roberts, Pet Shop Boys (with novelty Ab Fab track), Ace Of Base (a cover of Aswad’s UK 1988 number one, itself a cover of a Tina Turner B side written by Diane Warren and Albert “dad of The Strokes Albert hammond Jnr” Hammond), Daryl Hall (for 18 years of hits), Seal, Eddi Reader (another 1988 UK number one act) of Fairground Attraction, Alison Moyet (12 years of hits), 2 Unlimited, Tori Amos, The Levellers and Aretha Franklin (26 years of hits to date). Phew! New act Galliano was a goodie too.

29th May 1994

3 weeks Enigma, they do seem to get long runs on top when they happen! New Age starting to make way for new rock though, with Guns n Roses and Stiltskin in the top 3. Never say I’m predictable, even Bruce Dickinson manages a new entry (I like him, though not keen on Iron Maiden generally)!

Lookit Galliano rocket, though, from 74 to 4! Who?! It’s a fab jazzfunk 60’s vibe version of Crosby Stills and Nash’s Long Time Gone. Love it. Joined by another cover at 5 (Everybody’s Talking, Beautiful South’s return to the top 5), for 3 out 5 old songs. East 17 sneak quietly into the Top 10 and highest new entry? Crash! Boom! Bang! Roxette are back! Three number ones and lots of hits later, 5 years on they are still on a roll.

Deacon Blue have their Dignity. Back at 20, that is, much higher than first time round, while Wet Wet Wet still struggle to get into the Top 20. I think it’s fair to assume it’s not heading for a 15 week run on top of MY charts! Hooray! Alice Cooper’s also back, as he was wont do for, lo, these 22 years so far. Much much older though, and guess what? Another cover! Thankfully it’s a quirky one as the movie The Flintstones gives the B52’s an excuse to have some fun (and a hit) with the TV show theme tune, which I loved as a very very young boy, and continue to love as a not so young boy. Boys remain boys at heart. The ones that don’t have no heart at all!

Others: Carleen “Brand New Heavies” Anderson, Saint “fab” Etienne, All 4 “yawn” One, Salt ‘n’ Pepa (Shoop)....

5th June 1994

No more World Music at the top, it’s grunge, or at least the advert-related version of it, which is pretty terrific anyway. Loved those crashing guitars in Stiltskin’s day Inside and astride the charts. Exciting stuff. Bad news for Guns ‘n’ Roses who get stuck at 2, their highest spot since topping 5 years earlier with Sweet Child ‘o’ Mine - it’s the highest charting version of Since I Don’t Have You though. Roxette recall their glory 1989 chart-topping days too as they Crash! at 4. Boom! Bang!

Blur’s glorious To The End up to 7 with a bullet, ahead of the Frampton reggae-tastic Big Mountain at 9, and Eddi Reader getting her biggest solo hit at 10, 6 years on since her last one (with Fairground Attraction). Dawn Penn also rockets to 21 with the fab reggae No No No. Yes Yes Yes! More reggae? How about highest new entry from Aswad, Shine catches them at their very poptastic best, and leaps Ace Of Base’s version of their Don’t Turn Around - which, essentially is also reggae-ish.

Non-reggae new stuff from Primal Scream at 33, Janet Jackson at 36, and lower-but-better The Prodigy’s fab No Good, Pulp’s Babies, and assorted Crowded House, Arrested Development and Pearl Jam tracks. Only one of those last 3 will be in next week’s charts...

12th June 1994

Blur knock off grunge from the top, their first chart-topper 5 years on from their debut, and what an epic track it is. To The End is pure tearful earnestness wrapped up in a gorgeous wrapping. Brilliant. Knocking on the Blur door, though Dawn Penn’s insistent stylish reggae is at 3, while Aswad’s pop sunny pop reggae just misses the 10. My chartnote says “hot weather at last” which means, I guess, a late summer, and a reason for reggae to feature big, so summer-sounding.

Pet Shop Boys Ab Fab semi-novelty pops up to 12 and saves it from becoming their lowest-placed single, ever. One peaked even lower, circa 1991! 2 Unlimited get another top 20 hit, Primal Scream ditto, and Aretha Franklin keeps a run of Top 20 hits spanning 26 years as Willing To Forgive leaps to 20 after pottering around the lower reaches.

Ace of Base at 22, The Prodigy at 24, Danii Minogue new at 29 (unexpectedly), and Tom Robinson looking Hard at 32 (17 years on from a motorway fling) all brighten up the Top 40 a bit. Chuck in another D:Ream hit, another Faster Manics hit, night-bound Pretenders at 44, and Huey Lewis sneaking in 11 years on, and most of the rest can be ignored. Note Wet Wet Wet drop without ever making the Top 20. Oops!

19th June 1994

2 weeks for Blur, and Roxette move into runners-up big ballad slot, which is fair enough as Blur is much better and they’ve had 3 number ones! Big Mountain take Baby I Love Your Way MUCH higher than anyone else, even Peter Frampton (though he also has had a previous number one, so no worries). Of more import, though 7 Seconds leaps to 9 after going up and down for weeks, and what a classic it is. Neneh Cherry fans may have given up hope of seeing her with a big hit again, 5 years on from her last one, but here she is with fab Youssou.

Tom Robinson’s jump to 12 is his biggest hit since War Babies in 1983. Gosh! That’s Hard. First mention for The Grid, here, as Swamp Thing makes it a Top 20 thang, and Pulp go Top 40. Newies? Let Loose, sounding (unsurprisingly) a bit Nik Kershaw-ey, catchy pop boyband, Gun cover Cameo as well as nicking the band name from Race With The Devil hitsters. Talk about unoriginal! Bonnie Raitt gets a hit, Elton John has a Lion King entry (and UK hit) at 60, the very sweet Can You Feel The Love Tonight, for 23 years of hits, while Alice Cooper gets a quick chart-entry follow-up for 22 years of hits. I’m nothing if not loyal to pop stars I like.

26th June 1994

In a beautiful case of poetic justice Aswad claim the number one spot with the great Shine, the week that the song they took to number one in the UK singles chart (but not mine) gets to 20 for Ace Of Base. Quite a bit of action at the top generally, too, as 7 Seconds claims runners-up, while The Boomtown Rats 15-year-old classic I Don’t Like Mondays enters at 3, trying to re-claim that number one spot.

Tom Robinson gets his 3rd Top 10 hit at 8, ahead of the great Nina Simone’s definitive version of Feelin’ Good, a classic that has never achieved the UK chart position it deserves, but enters at 9 in mine, 25 years after she had a number one in my chart with Ain’t Got No...I Got Life. Hey, when you’re right, you’re right...! The Pretenders add another Top 20 to the list, General Public (sort of bits of The Beat) come back with a cover of the Staple Singers number 3 hit from 1972, and grab a 23 hit out of it, their biggest. Bonnie Raitt also does the same at 27, while Yazz makes a comeback with a cover of the Korgis 1980 classic.

Others: Terrorvision, Utah Saints, Roachford, Cappella, Daryl Hall (and the Sounds Of Blackness), Spin Doctors Stevie Nicks (yay!) and a great follow-up single from Crash Test Dummies announces some coffeespoons in the afternoon at 75....

3rd July 1994

2nd week on top for Aswad, joined in the top 5 by yet another reggae track, as General Public’s version of The Staple Singers classic hits 5, 2 places lower than the 1972 original. The Pretenders keep up the run of Top 10 hits, Night In My Veins at 8, and The Grid’s Swamp Thing is up to 9.

Leading a mass influx of new entries is Crystal Waters and Ghetto Day, a record I preferred to her bigger hits; The Rolling Stones are back at 25, Love Is Strong enough to give them a sweet 25 years of hits to date; the big news is in at 34, a noisy new Manc band with an arrogant attitude, Shaker Maker from Oasis. The previous band called Oasis featured Mary Hopkin, and I’d pay to hear her sing an Oasis ballad. Just because.

Lots of big movers as well, B52’s up to 19, Janet Jackson to 20, Utah Saints to 30, and Daryl Hall up to 38, and waddya know I saw him 2 weeks ago in concert with mucker John Oates, still going strong. Other newies: Shed 7, Wildhearts, Robert Palmer 16 years into his run of hits, KWS doing what they do best - killing much better records, this time with the assistance of Rose Royce’s Gwen Dickey (Ain’t Nobody - I suggest sticking with Rufus in my 84 and 89 Top 10’s), Blind Melon, Take That (having a minor hit after some biggies), Aerosmith, a great comeback single for Bobby Brown, not yet remixed, and lastly, the 15-year-old, influential and ill-fated Aaliyah with Back And Forth. Best not mention R. Kelly who would be banged up a la Yewtree were he a UK resident. Probably. I wouldn’t want to spread malicious rumours, but he produced her Age Ain’t Nothin But A Number album and apparently married in secret after she lied about her age, in about ooh, 2 or 3 months after this debut. R. Kelly obviously had no idea how old she was, having had her signed to his record label at 12 years old. Well, what business-man needs to see a birth certificate from parents eh when signing up their child? Obviously not this one.....

10th July 1994

The Boomtown Rats return to Number One almost 15 years since they were last there. Tell Me Why? I Don’t Like Mondays! A shame, in a way, as they had already had a shot on top and Nina Simone’s Feelin’ Good hadn’t, so she is denied her second chart-topper. The B52’s get a 4th Top 10 hit 15 years since Rock Lobster clawed it’s way in. I’d known the song since I was, ooh, 4 or 5, and it fit nicely into their style, and they fit nicely into the movie.

Big climb for Bonnie Raitt, You at 12, and highest new entry is a 3rd Top 20 hit for Deep Forest (I bought and liked the album), beating out the classic Michael McDonald-sampling Regulate for Warren G and Nate Dogg, in at 30. Gun’s OK rock version of Cameo is Word Up at 19, and modest climbs for Let Loose and Elton and Oasis, rather surprisingly. Wildhearts, ever under-rated, romp it up into the 40.

Two Cowboys Gonfi-gon it at 54, a bit do-si-do Rednex stylee, and I must say Compliments On Your Kiss to Red Dragon, and yet more reggae in the chart. The 90‘s reggae revival seems to have been forgotten in run-downs of chart-trends, but it was very much a pop force in 93/94. Prince, very much a declining force from here-on, duets with Nona Gaye, Marvin’s daughter, at 66. The classic America, from West Side Story, gets used in The World Cup coverage and sneaks in at 72, but I’d prefer an excuse to rechart the brilliant movie version of the song, a highlight in cinema history, I never tire of watching it. “I Know a boat you can get on, bye bye!”.

17th July 1994

One of those rare chart events for me - a record enters at one by a new act: this time China Black’s irresistible Searching, instantly hooks into the brain in a pleasant reggae way. Largely forgotten these days, but I liked the mixed ethnicity (the name said it all), the good songs, and since my days in Singapore I tend to want to support Chinese-related stars, one of western society’s most media-invisible sections - in this case Simon Fung.

The Pretenders get 2 Top 5’s in a row, Deep Forest 3 Top 10’s in a row. Ace Of Base also get their third Top 10 and the Rolling Stones go top 20 25 years after Honky Tonk Women did the same. Love Is Strong is one of their better latter-day singles. Big climbs for Crash Test Dummies (try singing along to Afternoons and Coffeespoons without the assistance of something to force the vocal wayyyyyy down!) and Mariah Carey, who very nearly gets another Top 40 entry buoyed up by recent actual honest-to-goodness great singles. Honest!

New at 37 it’s the Muppets. No, honestly. It’s Animal’s version of Wipeout, most recently a hit for the Fat Boys and Beach Boys, and their first chart hit since 1978 - Don’t Dilly Dally On The Way. I’m serious....! Hey, Wipeout’s a great toon, and the Muppets are great. Alice is back at 39, Maria Muldaur’s 1974 classic is covered by Brand New Heavies at 40, Erasure run in at 47 with a decent pop hit, and in at 52 is a bonafide Trevor Horn-produced classic from Seal, Kiss From A Rose. Not only in a Batman movie, it’s gorgeously moving, and it’s something of an injustice to find it became only a middling chart-hit in 1994 in the UK. Thankfully 1995 was a bit kinder.

24th July 1994

2 weeks for China Black on top, but just look at Bad Boys Inc rocket from 74 to 3 with a record I (and everyone else) can barely remember, a sort of Take That clone if I can vaguely recall. Youtube video to confirm! I haven’t heard it for 20 years. Warren G hits 9, and I’ve Regulatedly heard that one throughout the 20 years. Funny thing, the passage of time....

Seal kisses a rose and enters the 40 at 11. I tried kissing a rose this weekend, and got my legs ripped up by thorns for my troubles - I look like I’ve been whipped severely in The Hunger Games. Talking of The Hunger Games, Lenny Kravitz was last seen being dragged off to be murdered, but here he enters at 51. Deuce! One place higher it’s Ant and Dec in a previous life. From teeny pop rapper actors to Mega-TV-presenters and a future number one with Let’s Get Ready To Rhumble. Who coulda predicted that one! I’m not sure how high it gets in my chart (yet), but it’s no chart-topper..

Elton’s Lion King at last breaks into the 20, and C.J. Lewis’ reggae-cover of yet another 60’s classic (Stevie Wonder) is Uptight to 17. Highest new entry though is Kate Bush and Larry Adler’s version of George Gershwin’s The Man I Love, taken from Adler’s 80th birthday tribute album to the great Gershwin. This a download I need! In at 20, former number one acts The Lightning Seeds and their fab new pop single Lucky You, while veteran Joe Cocker covers Summer In The City at 74. The glorious original by The Lovin’ Spoonful features in my very current chart, 20 years later, due to an advert. I’ve been waiting for an excuse to chart it.....!

Oldies what I was playing a lot in this week were Lovers Of The World Unite, 60’’s harmony fun by David & Jonathan (aka Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway of many a hit song and Blue Mink fame), Like A Prayer, and Part Of The Union by The Strawbs. Varied, at least!

31st July 1994

After peaking at 2 and weeks inside the Top 10, it finally gets there! The classic, gorgeous 7 Seconds from Youssou N’Dour and Neneh Cherry, one of the best (and favourite) records of the 90’s. Love it. I love the fact that’s not in English (in part) and is rooted in West Africa. I think I was a bit on a mission to widen music to the world (as were the charts), and just take a look at the variety of genres and world origins of the tracks inside the Top 20: Deep Forest to Bad Boys Inc, George Gershwin to Erasure’s synthpop leaping into the top 10, and the Three Tenors highest new entry at 12 with two Opera tracks from La Traviata and Rigoletto to The Muppets surf comedy and 1977 B Side re-issue, Mah Na Mah Na, finally getting the chart credit it deserved first time round. A bit of rap, a lot of reggae, a class ballad, pop, dance, jazzfunk, blues, and alternative rock. Those were the days when the charts weren’t dominated by just one or two genres....

Talking of jazzfunk Level 42 are high new entries at 17 with the sweet Love In A Peaceful World, while part-time Eagle and hit-maker of 22 years, and even better songwriter, Jackson Browne returns with Everywhere I Go. Even better, Sophie B. Hawkins is back with a change of musical direction, dancepop supreme, the absolutely fantastic sublime marvellous Right Beside You, written after the death of her partner. Love it love it. The sadly recently late Bobby Womack was also back again, at 63, with Forever Love, and Shakespear’s Sister Marcella Detroit is no angel at 75.

7th August 1994

2 weeks for Youssou n neneh, classic. Another classic at 2, Kissing that Rose and equalling his biggest solo hit Crazy, it’s Seal. A massive leap for the gorgeous Sophie 50 to 5, to give her a 2nd Top 5 hit, and a hat trick of Top 10’s for Enigma in 1994, in at 7 with another laid-back track off their great New Age album. Late in their career, Level 42 join Enigma in their peaceful Top 10 world for 11 years worth of occasional big hits (and lots of lesser ones).

Will Smith’s summer anthem pops back again 3 years on, as do Whitesnake 5 years or so on, while Swing Out Sister show that something good came out of Four Weddings And A Funeral - a lovely cover of the Delfonics 1971 smash La La Means I Love You, and new at 20 as their terrific retro sounds keep on.

Others: Janet Jackson’s back and on and on, Bobby Womack goes Top 40, and entering at 40 it’s the Jesus and Mary Chain and a melodic duet, at 47 Morrissey and Siouxsie duetting Interlude a bit hauntingly, and Quo apparently didnt mean it. Not Sure I believe them, but hey ho, that’s 21 years of hits to date.

14th August 1994

Enigma’s 3rd of the year, and 4th number one in total. I really did like them back then! To be fair I was expanding my musical horizons to the the world, and so was the record-buying public. If only the current UK music-selling scene could say the same! Sophie at 2 ands she’s Right Beside You, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince second-time round take their growing pop classic back into the 10, and Blur re-enter as a proper single now at 15 with the ever-so-Brit-pop anthem Park Life.

Joe Cocker converts to a double A side and leaps into the 20, for a chart span of 26 years, while joining him is Lulu at 38 to do exactly the same. Terry Hall, solo, at 39, and he’s having 15 years of hits and counting. A cover of the Dream Girls classic from 1982 drops by for Donna Giles at 46, while the Manics Revol in at 52. Eh? Revol? A couple of classics lower down though, Kylie surprises all with a sultry growing up and Confide In Me slides in at 55, with Oasis’ 2nd hit the fabulous Live Forever at 75. Finally, the sweet Lisa Loeb hit is at 67.

21st August 1994

2 weeks for Enigma on top as Level 42 get their highest-ever chart placing at 5. Just look at Kylie though, 55 to 6, loving those eastern-sounds, and giving her yet another Top 10 hit, 6 years and counting. The Lightning Seeds also continue their run of Top 10 fabtastic pop singles, Lucky You! Swing Out Sister also break into the 10 for the last time (I think), with their 70’s soul cover.

Highest new entry, though, is a remixed version of the album track Yesterday When I Was Mad, in at 13. What are the chances of it being the 5th Very album track Pet Shop Boys number one? Very good! Morrissey and Siouxsie meanwhile take their Interlude from 58 to 16, that’s 16 years of Top 20’s for Siouxsie and 11 years for Smiler. Lulu spits on both statistics though, joining Joe Cocker on 26 years of Top 20 hits, while Prince grabs another Top 20 as simultaneously album track (and future single) Letitgo enters at 34.

Oasis, though get their first ever Top 20 hit as Live Forever rockets 75 to 18, PJ & Duncan finally break into the 30, and The Bee Gees join the album track listers with Blue Island at 32. Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun isn’t Supermassive, but 52 isn’t bad, and the Rev Al Green duets with country star Lyle Lovett for a new entry at 71. I think that’s all very varied!

28th August 1994

Sophie B. Hawkins gets her one and only chart-topper, but what a corker it is. I still love it to bits, and it really should be a radio classic, or featuring in a 90’s retro megamovie. Sophie was endearingly quirky, and I wish she was still as successful, though she is still active, hooray! Pet Shop Boys of course are mad at 4, and its a hot hot hot new (old) entry as the 10-year-old minor hit comes back bigger and remixed at 9. Prince gets another Top 10 hit and a top 20 hit, though he was using a squiggle and a pompous assertion that he isn’t Prince anymore as a name at various times from 1993 onwards. Way to kill your career Prince!

Ian McNabb (of The Icicle Works) has a 10 year comeback at 25, and just below Edie Brickell’s best single (albeit lesser known) the gorgeous Good Times at 26. Lisa Loeb leaps alliteratively into the 30, and Ice Cube reactivates George Clinton of Funkadelic and Parliament fame with their Bop Gun at 32. Pause for breath, now, cos there’s a whopping 21 new entries clearing out the charts - Roxette’s latest Fireworks explode at 35, driving Aerosmith Crazy at 36 (an album track, and future hit ballad single), while Eurythmic Dave Stewart has a Heart Of Stone at 38, and Cyndi Lauper radically re-invents her 1984 debut hit at 42. Hey Now!! It’s good, but not AS good.

Others: Soundgarden make 39, The Beautiful South make eyes from 44, John Mellencamp is 60, UB40 63, Robert Palmer 72, Aswad 75 keep the hits coming, while comebacks of sorts from Patti Labelle at 73, and newer entries from Shed 7 and Shampoo. Uh oh we’re in trouble!

Shampoo was the best British girl group before Sugababes / Girls Aloud era. Not All Siants and not Spices.
Every their single (from five) was # 1 in my chart.

Hi Osker, thanks for that interesting to see much of my chart in a slightly different order, but just as varied - Ive been playing Morrissey and Siouxsie a lot this week, having rediscovered it and Jesus And Mary Chain's, and Larry Adler/Kate Bush's singles. 7 Seconds at 1 is flawless of course! cool.gif

cheers!
john

Hi Alex, well I can't say I was a huge fan at the time, but they sound fun in retrospect, energetic pop laugh.gif

4th September 1994

So much competition for the top spot that absolute classics are just grabbing one week, so poor Sophie drops down to make room for Seal’s Kiss From A Rose, a track that didn’t really take off for another year in the UK. It had a gorgeous Middle-Ages vibe to it, and that’s not something you can say very often. Seal’s first solo topper, or his second if including Killer in 1990 (with Adamski), though Crazy had a long run at 2. Pet Shop Boys new single has to make do with runner-up, though Blur get another Top 10 with Park Life, Prince replaces himself in the Top 10 with Letitgo, Oasis get their first with Live Together, Lulu extends her run of Top 10’s to 26 years, and Robert Palmer has another of his occasional Top 10’s up a whopping 62 places. Phew!

Michelle Gayle is pure Sweetness, highest new entry at 24, while Jackson Browne returns at 27, just ahead of Terrorvision’s Pretend Best Friend at 31, keeping up their manic pop metal run of hits. Shawn Colvin covers The Police at 38, and debuts, while Shara Nelson is Inside Out at 47, Eternal claim to be So Good at 48 (hmmm) and Inner Circle reggae back with a cover at 53. A bunch of veterans claim entries in the bottom 5 (after D:Ream’s latest) as daryl Hall keeps his solo entries going, Peter gabriel has a live EP, Crowded House invent a new fruit-based insult, Oi, Pineapple Head, and Billy Idol’s theme from the fab new movie Speed pops in 15 years since Gen X.

Speed made a fave of Sandra Bullock, and a new buffed-up Keanu Reeves set himself up as leading man material. Nonsense plot of course, but great fun. On TV, I was well into Deep Space 9, X Files, and Newhart - Bob Newhart’s latest sitcom with the terrific Henry Mancini theme tune.
