BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Carly Rae Jepsen - I Really Like You

Will be released in early 2015 (at least to US pop radio) according to this link:

http://playiga.com/track/coming-2015/

Can't wait to hear it though I don't expect much UK success for it.

Posted by: mr_aly 17th December 2014, 10:33 PM

YAY!

I adored her album and she deserved so much more, it's a perfect pop guilty pleasure album and there were tons of hits to choose from (especially 'Hurt So Good' sad.gif), although with how badly the campaign was mismanaged what chance did she have?

I hope this is also fabulous and can give her a second chance.

Posted by: JosephCarey 17th December 2014, 11:10 PM

REALLY looking forward to this, Kiss was a fabulous pop album wub.gif

Posted by: dhwe 18th December 2014, 05:48 AM

I think "Call Me Maybe" had been so meme-ified to death that she really stood no chance of being able to establish herself as an artist to the general public, as they were quick to write her off as just the "Call Me Maybe" girl. It's a shame because the follow-up singles from Kiss were so good. I hope the public is ready to give her another chance now that "Call Me Maybe" has receded to memory at least a little.

Posted by: mr_aly 18th December 2014, 12:51 PM

I think what hampered her was releasing the album off the back of the Owl City collaboration months later and expecting it to sell of that, and then releasing the proper follow-up (This Kiss) about 9 months later. As much as I like that song, it was never gonna exactly be a hit for her.

Posted by: slowdown73 18th December 2014, 03:38 PM

Her last album wasn't bad and full of pop songs. I fear she will be a one hit wonder though (two hit wonder if you include the collab with owl city).

I always branded her a one and a half hit wonder. laugh.gif

(Hoping that can change)

Ooh excited for this defo. I'm still jamming to 'Tonight I'm Getting Over You' wub.gif

Posted by: Jamesus 3rd January 2015, 10:25 PM

Kiss was for sure one of the best pop albums released that year. I can't wait to see what she comes out with next (although everyone knows it's gonna bomb)

I don't see her releasing anything else after this album though .. one hit wonder sad.gif

she has worked with the following ppl on the album:

- Yelle
- Max Martin
- Dev Hynes
- Ariel Rechshtaid
- Jack Antonoff
- Cyndi Lauper
- Benny Blanco

Posted by: Wall-e 1st March 2015, 06:27 AM

The random release of 'Good Time' ruined her campaign before it even started. I'm positive 'Good Time' would have been number one had it not been released on Owl City's album.

Posted by: jark 1st March 2015, 10:21 AM

The clip sounds good, albeit very tame and a little too calculated to quality for song of the year. We shall see.

oh pls! what pop song isn't calculated? that is what pop is all about. isn't jess glynne calculated for releasing a rehash of 'real love'? you wax lyrical about that tho and its carefree nature!

Posted by: jark 1st March 2015, 03:09 PM

Fair point re the Glynnester, but this song and campaign have clearly been very carefully tailored to recapture the vibe and repeat the success of Call Me Maybe, with some Red era Taylor thrown in for good measure, and it's not exactly common for that to come off. As I said, I'll keep an open mind.

Omg took the words right oot me mouth!!

It'sveeeery contrived and calculated, almost lab-engineered to be a CMM clone. Oeople are gonna see reet through it. I'll wait for the hq full version but so far it sounds like a carbon copy of CMM and Sweet Talk and we all know the latter flopped.

I need this on my computer, so if anyone can help me with that I will promise to really like you.

Posted by: Robot 1st March 2015, 05:49 PM

She's embarassingly cringy and cutesy for a 29 year old and those chorus lyrics of "I really really really really really really really like you, do you want me, cos I want you" are just... something else on the cringe scale.

That said, the song is incredibly catchy and I almost definitely will be listening to it lots.

Ok it only took one play, I'm taking back what I said. This is amazing. Simply a flawlessly crafted pop song.

That's the beauty of it I think, it's just pure pop, not enough of this in the charts right now. Loving it right now.

Posted by: Scherz 1st March 2015, 06:27 PM

It's a very strong pop song! I really hope it does well for her because she's cute, despite her age, and at least she tries.
Doesn't quite have the magic of Call Me Maybe and I don't think it'll come anywhere close to that level of popularity, but it's cute.
EDIT: Unless the video is out of this world, then maybe it could..

Posted by: Davidson 1st March 2015, 07:07 PM

She really is the definition of basic bitch isn't she? Really don't like the Jepsen 'brand' in it's sheer blandness.

Having said that, this is kind of undeniable. It sounds as though it could fit well into Taylor's '1989' and seeing as I love that I would be being hypocritical to not accept this as a bloody good pop song.

Posted by: JVSH 1st March 2015, 08:46 PM

This is literally the epitome of 1989 with the maturity of Call Me Maybe. Of course it is brilliant.

Posted by: Liаm 1st March 2015, 08:55 PM

You can REALLY hear the calculation I agree, but it's so meticulously put together that it's just wondrously flawless wub.gif Reminds me of Call Me Maybe mixed with a bit of Taylor's New Romantics.

Really really really hope and think this will be a #1. Such a perfect feel good pop song, so badly in love with this heart.gif

Posted by: Ryan. 1st March 2015, 11:02 PM

Unfortunately I can't see this being a hit, only because I can't see radio anywhere getting properly on board with Carly again. I really really hope I'm wrong!

Posted by: J▼hnkm 1st March 2015, 11:05 PM

Posted by: Mango 2nd March 2015, 12:13 AM

I really really really really really really like this (sorry someone had to say it). Seriously though, that chorus is catchy as f*ck and even though I've only heard it once, I can guarantee I'm gonna wake up with it in my head tomorrow morning. Yeah so it's a bit cheesy but who doesn't like a bit of cheese? This needs to SMASH!

Some thoughts based on the GMA performance.

What's with that hair? It looks like a wig, it's both the wrong colour and incorrect length to suit our Jeppo.

Why do her backing dancers/singers look like Wanda Sykes? Also why are they miming? Carly is live...

I never noticed her Nicola Roberts pale she was before.

The whole song sounds familiar... particularly the bit of the chorus after the "really x6 like you" bit. However the intro sounds like Believe by Cher...

However despite all my thoughts, I really do like the song.

Posted by: THEO. 5th March 2015, 10:46 PM

QUOTE(Popjustice)
Carly Rae Jepsen’s said quite a lot about her new album and it’s good news for Dev Hynes

Carly Rae Jepsen’s basically confirmed that the songs she’s done with notorious hitmakers Dev Hynes and Ariel Rechtshaid will be on her new album, although she’s still figuring the finer details out at the moment to be honest.

In a chat with Stereogum (obviously!) the ‘This Kiss’ hitmaker said she’s currently cutting the album down from 22 songs to 11 on the normal version and 16 on the ‘deluxe’, but did let this secret out:

“I’m gonna say something that I probably shouldn’t say, but the Dev and Ariel songs are definitely going to make it. I don’t see it not. It’s always been in my top 5.”

(That quote makes it seem like it’s just one song, but who knows really.)

Asked about what it sounded like, she said the following words:

“It hints at Prince a bit. And it’s emotional. It was really fun to see them combine and see us combine. It was three people who have never really worked together in that capacity, and it was a fun, new sort of something that I don’t think any of us could have made without the other person. That’s when it’s the best.”

What about that other bastion of Pitchfork-approved pop music Rostam Batmanglij, we hear you cry? What about the song she made with HIM???

“Well, with Rostam, we made what’s maybe one of my favorite [SHE MEANS FAVOURITE] songs,” she mused. “It’s really strange…It’s one of my top favorites [SHE MEANS FAVOURITES] of all of them. I think the luxury that I had with the two years of taking this break and doing the New York and Broadway thing gave me time to experiment. I wrote with some of the biggest pop writers, and then I wrote with people who I just admired myself with my taste, which is a little bit more left of center.”

She also said she didn’t have anything to do with picking ‘Call Me Maybe’ as the first single last time round because she basically doesn’t know what makes a hit.

“‘Call Me Maybe’ wouldn’t have been the first single had I not gone through a big span of votes through family, friends, ” she explained. “Once I saw my aunt get off the couch and start to dance, and she doesn’t ever dance, it was really like…OK, there’s something to this and I should pay attention to that.”

Whether or not a popstar’s aunt dances to a song should be the litmus test for all future pop releases, starting NOW.

So three confirmed collaborators are Dev Hynes, Ariel Rechtshaid and Rostam Batmanglij - two of whom I could name nothing by! Loving "I Really Like You" so far though!

Posted by: mr_aly 6th March 2015, 02:36 AM

This girl is diamond pop material, her last album showed that. I desperately hope she gets the chance to prove it!

I like when people do different things with videos but sometimes, like with 'One Last Time', it just doesn't work. But that really put a smile on my face, a genuine feel good video with a really unique twist that ties in really well with the general feel of the whole song. I'm starting to see this slowly form into a likely hit and I'm absolutely loving it right now. Simple but so joyful.

Such a good video and just what the song needed I think, to help it along and potentially become a success!

Posted by: ┌ ╫ ┘ 7th March 2015, 10:12 AM

it would have helped if tom hanks had bothered to take the time to actually learn the words to the song, mumbling away there and sadly it does take away from the video alas, the last scene is lovely though; who doesn't like massive synchronised dance breaks tho <3

Posted by: Jack 7th March 2015, 10:29 AM

I agree Tom Hanks can not lip synch for his life. RuPaul would read him to filth.

This song has proved to be QUITE the grower, repetitiveness and all. I'd really like to see more pop music in the charts again so I hope this can smash. The video seems to be a talking point anyway so hopefully it'll translate into sales.

THAT MIMING. It was kind of endearing in a way, as well as the emoji conversations! Poor Tom getting those swipes on Tinder tho.

C'MON CARLY

Wondeful video, so simple but so fun and endearing - it's as simple and lovable as the song itself so it definitely fits. I really hope after all the effort and meticulous crafting of a brilliant pop song and video package it's a hit.

Posted by: Dobbo 10th March 2015, 06:03 PM

Decent, but very poorly written chorus. Just adding enough really's to stretch out the line/cba to actually think of any other lyrics smells of half arsed job to me.

Shame as it had potential from the verses, but I do otherwise like this & it sounds like it could have slotted right in the middle of Kiss.

I dislike the video for this. I'm watching it right now.

UK release has been brought forward to April 26th!

Posted by: mr_aly 12th March 2015, 12:09 PM

I am really pleased about that! I thought to myself late April would be a more optimum date.

Posted by: Mango 12th March 2015, 12:32 PM

Most sensible decision of the year so far smile.gif

Posted by: Joe. 12th March 2015, 12:35 PM

Thank god for that!

Posted by: Jonjo 12th March 2015, 02:44 PM

Gone for a VERY similar pattern for CMM then (that entered the charts for the week of 14th April! laugh.gif). Pretty sure that was also originally scheduled to be released in or around June.

Posted by: Jay ジ 13th March 2015, 01:48 AM

A very good decision! June 14th was just ridiculous. laugh.gif

Posted by: Mango 13th March 2015, 10:19 AM

I think the subtitle needs to be changed to reflect the new release date smile.gif

Posted by: Joe. 13th March 2015, 06:40 PM

I can see this being another #1 for her. She'll officially be able to rid herself of the "one hit wonder" status.

One and a half hit wonder. tongue.gif

If that could happen it'd be wonderful. ohmy.gif

I always knew she was destined for more than she got.

Posted by: JimmyT 14th March 2015, 10:19 AM

The video is just ruined by the irritating poor lip synching and needed more Carly.

But, after a few listens how can you dislike this song or dislike her?
She's cute as a shiny button.
Everyone likes shiny buttons smile.gif

This came on in a nightclub I was at last night and I went absolutely mental (but nobody else really seemed to know what it was, and I was very drunk falling whilst going crazy which may explain the bemused faces even more). It was a "request" for someone though, so it's evidently picking up popularity. Sounded SO good, I'm so happy she looks like getting a second hit because this song is just so so feel good.

Posted by: SevenSeize 16th March 2015, 11:12 PM

After giving this a few days, I've come to the conclusion this is rather good! Not quite 'Call Me Maybe', but it still gets the job done <3

Unsure why people were writing off her chances of getting a 2nd smash hit here (Good Time notwithstanding), she was always going to get support from Capital FM at the very least! Nonetheless this looks very likely to be a UK #1, good on her~

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 23rd March 2015, 08:04 PM

Beyond obsessed on this, such an amazing pop track heart.gif

Posted by: Joe. 25th March 2015, 11:18 AM

Since this is #130 4 weeks before release, I'm thinking we have another sure-fire number 1 for CRJ. She should get this on streaming next week or the week after.

Posted by: JSG 26th March 2015, 03:20 PM

I've done a complete u turn on this. It's so amazing! I watched the behind the scenes video and it's meant to be a day on the life of Tom hanks. and the bad lip synching is probably cause he's meant to be practising scenes and learning the words for his new video or something. I Really really really really really really really like this!

Posted by: slowdown73 26th March 2015, 03:36 PM

This is certainly not as good as "call me maybe" but its ok. I'd imagine it should go top10 though.

It's pretty much a certain #1 if not #2 based on it's pre orders as it's currently 109. Agreed though as I do prefer CMM still.

Posted by: mr_aly 26th March 2015, 03:40 PM

'Call Me Maybe' is a pretty tall order to beat though, I'd say this is at least 2/3rds as good.

Posted by: Robert S 26th March 2015, 03:45 PM

Just got played on Radio 1 too biggrin.gif

Considering the pre-order is flirting with the top 100 just less than a month before release, I think it'll probably be number 1. Top 10 isn't even questionable. I think #3 is the lowest it could chart.

Call Me Maybe is just fantastic. It brings back so many good memories of a great summer (even though I'm sure it was released February or March), she's not going to beat that. But this is a great pop song, too.

I'm shocked it hasn't taken off in America!

Posted by: JSG 26th March 2015, 03:48 PM

America won't matter too much though as it's doing alright in her home nation. currently top 20 so that's fine!

Posted by: mr_aly 26th March 2015, 03:49 PM

I'm pretty sure this will explode in the US, it only just went for adds. 'Call Me Maybe' took a while to get going if I recall.

Posted by: Joe. 4th April 2015, 11:00 AM

TOTD on R1 today smile.gif

$0.69 on iTunes now and it's having more of an effect than any live performance has had!

24. Carly Rae Jepsen - I Really Like You

She wasn't even top 100 on iTunes yesterday so maybe with it being so high it could eventually start climbing on iTunes. I must admit that her promotional team have done a fantastic job. She's behind 3 Voice tracks so I'm expecting her to be top 20 on iTunes tomorrow.

Posted by: barbaric_dan 16th April 2015, 03:28 PM

So America really has given up on her

Yeah it's doing really well now hopefully this will encourage US radio to get on board properly (I think one of the major stations has added it now), no doubt the viral video with Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande has helped a bit too!

Posted by: Joe. 20th April 2015, 12:37 PM

She really should have gotten this on Spotify this week, as Wiz and Omi are going to have massive streaming advantages over her next week. I'm thinking she might have to settle for #3 after all, as her pre-order is only #94 now and the top 2 still seem to be selling SO much.

Posted by: Hadji 21st April 2015, 10:49 PM

I reckon Wiz Khalifa will prevent CRJ from reaching #1 and that LunchMoney Lewis will be the #1 to end Wiz Khalifa's reign at the top of the charts

This is up to #9 already in Ireland.

#52 here (pre order)

Finally bought this. Fingers crossed it gets some great sales in its first week. Currently at #11 on iTunes.

I can't take Carly seriously - She sings songs that would suit a 16 year old yet she's nearly 30!

Posted by: JosephStyles 26th April 2015, 08:48 PM

Why should it matter how old she is?

Posted by: Joe. 26th April 2015, 08:52 PM

Anyway - Tom hanks is a lot older than her and nobody cares HE'S singing the song, do they? People just wish his lip syncing were better (true of course)

I dislike the snobbery about this song being near the top of the chart 'it's so childish and silly' comments everywhere. So what? It's a well constructed and produced pure-pop song which is brilliantly infectious. I think it's actually a breath of fresh air these days, as this type of pop has become rarer.

Because she's singing songs that I would expect a teenager to be singing - Great pop song but really not suited to a 30 year old in my opinion

But does that affect your opinion of the song? It shouldn't be about how old someone is, it should be about the song surely. I mean, Madonna is not singing songs you'd expect someone in their 50s to sing but that doesn't make them any less good to me. Obviously each to their own but it's a shame for it to come down to an issue of age imo.

Absolute flop in the US.

Makes her a rare commodity like the Spice Girls 1 hit wonder in US and more than 2 hits elsewhur.

So odd that she's not really been given the time of day on radio in the US. It sounds like such a worldwide smash to me...

It's managed to climb to #16 in Cananda which isn't as bad... Still a little underwhelming, being her country of origin.

Looks like #3 in the UK and Ireland will be where it peaks the highest. She should have done some promo this week over here, she may have actually managed to get #1 here.

Not to go off topic but not so sure she relates to the Spice Girls in the US? They had 4 Top 10s and 2 multi platinum albums.

USA:

Wannabe #1 Platinum
Say You'll Be There #3 Gold
2 Become 1 #4 Gold
Spice Up Your Life #18 Gold
Too Much #9 Gold
Stop #16
Goodbye #11 Gold
Headlines #90

Spice #1 Platinum x7
Spiceworld #3 Platinum x4
Forever #39

This is already up to 19 on Spotify, which is great - it's rare for new releases to get into the top 20 this quickly. I don't think Jess Glynne was even top 40 at this point. It's looking like it could be quite a long running hit. I'm hoping for a 1 or 2 extra weeks in the top 5 after this week.

Posted by: Joe. 1st May 2015, 01:04 PM

Charted at #3 in Ireland - highest peak I think.

Dancing With The Stars Performance:

Posted by: Joe. 6th May 2015, 06:27 AM

Is that her last promo in America? For some reason that song just isn't happening for her there.

She should come and do a weeks promo while its still high on iTunes - she could probably get it to number 2. Despite it selling 86k and the fact it's coming for a second week top 3 over here, airplay hasn't been the best.
