Music industry magazine Record Of The Day are speculating that the BBC are about to announce a new pop music show. It's to be produced by Fulwell 73 (who produce The Late Late Show with James Corden), it's going to be given a six-week initial run from October in TOTP's old late-90s slot Friday 7.30pm. It's said to have been commissioned by Guy Freeman, who worked on One Love Manchester, Let It Shine, Children In Need Rocks and our Eurovision selection.
We don't know exactly what the format is yet, but it does seem likely they'll run down the chart if it's on a Friday night. |

That would be good news if true. At the moment all we have in terms of regular terrestrial music programmes is Jools Holland, which is fantastic but usually skews mainly for more alternate crowd (although Katy Perry did perform on it in 2008). The TFI Friday revival had a good variety of performers across different genres, but it only lasted 1 series. I'd love it if it featured a mix of performers who were doing well across both singles & albums, and across a variety of genres, a bit like TOTP, as hopefully it could help to make the charts a little less homogeneous.

Ooh I would gladly welcome this! I have always loved the concept of TOTP-esque shows and still tune into their Christmas and New Year specials, as well as occasionally watching the repeats of old episodes. I rarely watch TV in general but I would tune into a music programme like this.

It will be great news if that is true. But an relevant programme where an artist is going on the show who have a realistic chance of a Top40 hit when they perform. An artist/group is releasing an album. Then do the countdown from 40-31, 30-21, 20-11 and then the Top10 followed by the highest new entry/ climber and then the #1 played last.

Lots of music fans would love a TOTP style primetime show but unfortunately people just don't tune into these sort of shows. The TFI Friday revival dropped away very quickly in the ratings and there's no plans to bring it back and even the Christmas and New Year TOTPs don't gather much interest ratings wise anymore. Jools Holland doesn't do well either.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love something like this to work and be broadcast full time, but there's not really anything it can bring that you can't just easily find online. Perhaps an online music show would work better? Something on the BBC 3 site? |

This is brilliant news! As it's on a Friday, I'd like to hope that new releases are performed on the show - this could speed up the new-entry turnover of the charts by quite a bit as it'll give welcome exposure to songs that've come out that day.

The xmas day totps must surely get a huge audience - 2pm on xmas afternoon??
Love the xmas totps and watch the 1984 totps religiously so a chart based prime time music show would be brillant!! |

Little Mix and Stormzy could easily have launched Power on this type of show for example. |

And now a lot of them aren't even bothering with proper music videos! And unlike in 2006 when TOTP ended, the overnight ratings won't be too important. If it does well on iPlayer and individual performances get millions of hits on YouTube it'll be deemed a success. |

The problem by then was that Top of the Pops was buried away on a Sunday afternoon, and absolutely no one was watching it. The last Top of the Pops performance I remember that genuinely got a fair amount of attention was this one from 2003, unfortunately still in the physical CD era so no download boost! |
