BuzzJack Music Forum _ Madonna _ Madonna at Eurovision

QUOTE
Madonna is reportedly in negotiation with organizers to perform at the Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held in Tel Aviv in 2019, Ynet said Tuesday.

Israel won the rights to host the annual competition in 2019 after Netta Barzilai was named the winner of last year’s event.

According to the report, Madonna expressed her agreement to come to Israel, but negotiations remain ongoing over financial terms.

Netta Barzilai was name winner of the 2018 Eurovision competition with her song “Toy”, long favored to win after its trills, chicken-like clucking sounds, and lyrics embraced by the #MeToo movement made it a viral hit.

The 2019 Eurovision Song Contest will be taking place in Tel Aviv between the 14th and 18th of May.

I didn't like Justin Timberlake as interval act at Eurovision and I won't like Madonna either. Big names appearing there should have a connection to Eurovision, so Abba or Celine Dion would be fine.

Posted by: vibe Jan 18 2019, 08:36 AM

Madonna totally suits euro-vision and its fan base.

This totally has my support.

Posted by: liamk97 Jan 18 2019, 08:53 AM

Eurovision isn't really for me but I can't deny this sounds like a big deal. It gets a massive audience and I could see Madonna putting on a great show.

I do like how Madonna switches it up with the big promo pieces, even this far into her career where you'd have thought she'd done it all.

Posted by: Theonix Apr 8 2019, 05:17 PM

She's been confirmed to perform two songs in the final!

This is huge and the most excited I've been for anything Madonna related in a LONG time!

Posted by: jakewild Apr 8 2019, 05:30 PM

this is so left field and i luv it

Posted by: HausofTove Apr 8 2019, 05:48 PM

Two songs!? So excited <3

Posted by: liamk97 Apr 8 2019, 05:53 PM

Yesss! Hopefully both will be new songs (watch it be Holiday and Candy Shop lol).

Posted by: jakewild Apr 8 2019, 06:14 PM

^ she's doing one hit and one new one

apparently she was at odds with the producers about the new one tho cos it's quite political..

Posted by: vibe Apr 8 2019, 06:25 PM

If it’s an old one what do you think she will choose ?

Hung Up
Like A Prayer
?

Posted by: dandy* Apr 8 2019, 06:27 PM

Hung Up would be the choice for me as it has the ABBA sample and would be fitting for the ESC

Thanks! In all seriousness I wonder what she'll perform as the hit, she seems to be fond of Like a Prayer in recent performances but I think she would do something different for Eurovision. Hung Up seems like a good shout.

Yeah I heard about that too. Quite exciting!

Posted by: HausofTove Apr 8 2019, 06:38 PM

Hung Up please for reasons stated above! The Lucky Star - Hung Up medly from Confessions tour if we're really making wishes *.*

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Apr 9 2019, 02:24 PM

Big coup for both parties, id say Madonna will do her new single and an oldie but biggie and i hope its hung up as that would get a huge crowd reaction.

Posted by: J▲hq Apr 9 2019, 10:09 PM

Vogue with Eurovision legends in the lyrics please

Loreen, Conchita, Jamala too
Silvia Night, we love you

Posted by: Qween Apr 10 2019, 06:21 AM

This is literally the most bizarre and amazing thing I have ever read

https://jewishnews.timesofisrael.com/good-heavens-madonna-will-perform-like-a-prayer-at-eurovision-in-tel-aviv/

According the above article, Madonna will be singing 'Like a Prayer'. Sorry, I love the song, but I'm getting pretty fed up with it being chosen over and over again to be performed when there's so many other great songs that should get a look in. For Eurovision especially we should have got something like Hung Up, Vogue or Express Yourself. Hopefully the report turns out to be false.

Posted by: vibe May 3 2019, 05:34 AM

Like A Prayer was the obvious choice .
A medley would have been awesome but she hates those.

Like A Prayer and I Rise ? Maybe it is Crave ? That is supposed to be the second single.

DrownedMadonna:

According to the Jerusalem Post, Madonna will perform Future with Quavo at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019.

Live Nation announced a surprise Quavo pop-up concert in Tel Aviv on May 16.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Quavo will also take the stage with Madonna during the Eurovision final on May 18.

The newspaper reports that Madonna is also planning to perform Like a Prayer and was in doubt if performing Future or Dark Ballet.

I know we'll get confirmation soon enough but all the uncertainty is doing my head in! laugh.gif

Hung Up is her most Eurovision like song from what I’d say are her “big” hits.

Like A Prayer is iconic but it’s not really Eurovision.

Of the new hits its hard to say what’s suitable as we’ve only heard two tracks.

I’d quite like a no guest set from her though so I’m hoping it’s two featureless tracks

Madonna has defended her decision to perform in Israel in the following statement:

QUOTE
"I'll never stop playing music to suit someone's political agenda nor will I stop speaking out against violations of human rights wherever in the world they may be. My heart breaks every time I hear about the innocent lives that are lost in this region and the violence that is so often perpetuated to suit the political goals of people who benefit from this ancient conflict. I hope and pray that we will soon break free from this terrible cycle of destruction and create a new path towards peace."

Sylvan Adams, who is paying the fee for the performance, confirms Madonna is performing. Madonna arrived in Israel last night.

Posted by: Guitartwitt May 15 2019, 09:45 AM

SHE IS ALWAYS AWESOME.

Posted by: Medellíam May 15 2019, 07:00 PM

'Like a Prayer' definitely being performed.

https://www.facebook.com/drownedmadonna/videos/2397647757179608/

Sigh. It's of course one of her best songs and I adore it, but why does it have to be wheeled out at every given opportunity when she has a huge back catalogue right there!

Posted by: pippa May 15 2019, 08:08 PM

I greatly welcome Like a Prayer getting performed to such a huge audience. i refer to it as her greatest song.
That said, i partially feel Hung Up may have got the arena up on its feet and possibly receive a greater sales boost.

Posted by: HausofTove May 16 2019, 02:27 PM

So Future and Like a Prayer then?

Posted by: Liаm May 16 2019, 02:29 PM

Like A Prayer is one of the absolute best songs of all time, let alone just by Madonna wub.gif I'm excited for that!

Posted by: vibe May 16 2019, 02:32 PM

Like A Prayer and Dark Ballet similar to metgala and then future .

Posted by: Medellíam May 16 2019, 09:42 PM

Officially confirmed now!

Seems like it'll be similar staging to the Met Gala performance but amplified. I hope 'Like a Prayer' feels a bit more joyous than it has done in recent times rather than sounding 'darker' or stripped back. I can forgive her for using it yet again if it matches the pizazz of Eurovision.

Eurovision host Assi Azar speaking about Madonna's performance on Graham Norton's Radio 2 show:

QUOTE
"I saw the rehearsal yesterday," Assi Azar told Graham Norton on his Radio 2 show this morning.

"It's an amazing show, what she's doing on the stage. She's literally taking over our entire stage, changing it completely."

He continued: "I can say she's literally building a chapel inside our arena in 40 seconds. That's the time she has from the moment we get off the stage to the moment she goes on the stage. It's unbelievable."

And according to Assi, who'll be hosting the show alongside Erez Tal, Bar Refaeli and Lucy Ayoub live from Expo Tel Aviv, there was never any doubt in his mind that Madonna would be performing, despite all the conflicting reports.

"I think that we should be so honoured that Madonna came all the way here to perform for us," he said. "Of course. Both sides get a lot out of it – Eurovision gets Madonna, no need to explain, Madonna gets the 200 million viewers that are watching her tonight.

"Every time that something happened like she is performing, she's not performing, I thought, 'It's going to close at the end'. She's gonna perform at the end, so let's just move on from the ego issues of both sides."

Primal Scream lead singer Bobby Gillespie has commented on Madonna's decision to perform at Eurovision:

What a charming man. Really bugs me that people are so quick to attack Madonna because they know her name will sell (what are Primal Scream up to these days?) and that the vast amounts of humanitarian work just gets ignored. The last time Madonna performed at Tel Aviv she addressed the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and fought for peace, I'm sure she'll be using Eurovision as a platform to do much the same.

Very disappointing performance especially like a prayer which is a song I love.

Posted by: Nick Jonas May 18 2019, 10:42 PM

Absolutely appalling performance.

Posted by: Jordan Lee May 18 2019, 10:48 PM

It was good after Like A Prayer.

Was Dark Ballet used after Like A Prayer before Future?

Posted by: jakewild May 18 2019, 11:04 PM

like a prayer was so bad! wtf

Posted by: slowdown73 May 18 2019, 11:09 PM

Future sounded better out of the two songs even though it’s not a great song. Like a prayer was flat as a pancake.

Posted by: dandy* May 18 2019, 11:45 PM

It wasn't great was it. Like a Prayer should have been euphoric - I'm kind of here for a chanting monk reimagining of it, just not at Eurovision.

The vocal alone was poor as was the arrangement of the song.

Posted by: TheJüpreme May 19 2019, 12:05 PM

The pre performance interview with Quavo was A Gift tho
So bad.

Ik the stereotype of Americans not getting eurovision but that was up to 11.

Posted by: Medellíam May 19 2019, 12:21 PM

You can view the performance from 2:56:30

I feel like she needs to adjust the key to suit her vocals on 'Like a Prayer'; she just can't manage it that high and that makes her out of breath quickly. 'Future' was better until that awful autotune came in. A shame this had to be on such a huge platform because it's giving the haters the opportunity to really go in on her hard. Piers Morgan relished in splashing "RIP Madonna's career" over the headlines.

Posted by: Piers May 19 2019, 12:37 PM

I thought the Future performance was pretty good. Definitely worked for me visually. Like a Prayer? There's no denying it was rough. Buuut...

I'm pretty tired of jumping onto Twitter and seeing a Madonna or a Mariah Carey (both with careers that put them at living legend status) being raked over the coals for a rough performance. Oh man, do I hate that cringe-face Chrissy Teigen gif that everyone uses. Yes, I've watched Madonna and Mariah struggle to sing their old songs...a lot. But it's like there's no acknowledgement of what they've accomplished in music for decades.

I think we need an understanding. Voices naturally change as artists get older. Madonna and Mariah are still performers. They shouldn't have to hang it up and stop. But songs they wrote/performed in their 20s and 30s are just going to be hard to sing now. It's unfortunate Madonna didn't get a lot of credit for being a fairly disciplined singer years ago when she was actually killing it vocally. I think Madonna needs to adjust the old songs to be in the vocal range of where she is now...and if she does that, I think the audience will need to accept that she's in her 60s and voices just change.

Posted by: vibe May 19 2019, 05:31 PM

Shame her vocal let her down .

The two songs had no connection , this version of LAP didn’t suit Eurovision.

Posted by: No Sleeep May 19 2019, 07:56 PM

Was it really that bad? She sounds pretty good to me in this version. I'm tired of Madonna being held up to impossible standards, no matter what she does it'll never be enough

Posted by: HausofTove May 19 2019, 08:33 PM

I'm seeing so much negative press for this. Not sure I want to watch sad.gif

I don't think it was as disastrous as the media are making out. It's not going to kill her career, but for such a big gig as Eurovision she fell way off the mark. Vocals were all over the place and it all felt very flat and uneventful, to the point that the political imagery she used kinda went unnoticed. It's just a shame that one bad performance and the press are all over it, yet the era has otherwise offered some really great moments.

Posted by: Medellíam May 19 2019, 09:51 PM

Uploaded to her official YouTube channel:

Have they fixed the vocal? It sounds a bit better on this version.

Posted by: Jay ☆ May 20 2019, 12:16 AM

Listened to the first few seconds of her singing and it's most definitely edited! I'll have to watch it all and see if the improved vocals helps to lift the rest of the performance, because the vocals on Saturday detracted from everything else for me.

Posted by: Piers May 20 2019, 04:20 AM

^ Yeah. The vocals have been completely re-edited. The difference is night and day.

So. Yeah. Have mixed feelings about her/her team doing that. I get that the big money maker for her brand is the live shows these days...and they don't want anything to harm the ticket sales.

But I mostly think this will only bring her more unwanted attention. It's not exactly a secret that she didn't sound great on Like a Prayer. Does she think people will find the video on Youtube and just say "Huh. On second listen, it doesn't sound so bad at all!" ?

Honestly, considering how often her real voice was hidden on the Rebel Heart Tour release, I'm surprised she went out there with such raw vocals for Like a Prayer. Did it actually go well in rehearsal? Are there people around her who would be honest if it didn't?

Posted by: Cucumberella May 20 2019, 07:52 AM

the whole thing was a disaster. she looks so completely out of her element. i don’t think there’s anything about it i liked (i would’ve liked the staging had it not been a retread of her recent tour. i liked the idea of it being retrospective to like a prayer but it was derivative at this point and COMPLETELY joyless.)

Posted by: Medellíam May 20 2019, 07:14 PM

On a positive note, I did like the new excerpt of 'Dark Ballet' we got. Reminds me a little like the spoken part of 'Future Lovers', not just for the line "I want to tell you about love". Looking forward to hearing that in full on the 7th!

Live Nation Sued Over Madonna’s Performance at Eurovision Song Contest

QUOTE
Madonna’s Eurovision performance earlier this year was panned by many critics. Now she’s being sued over it as well.

The KAN Israeli public broadcaster, which produced the Eurovision Song Contest in May, filed a lawsuit in a Tel Aviv court on Thursday against Live Nation and Live Nation Israel. The suit, first reported by Israel’s Yediot Aharonot daily, alleges that Madonna’s representatives violated the terms of their agreement and reneged on financial promises.

A spokeswoman for KAN confirmed that the suit was filed, but declined to comment further. According to online court records, KAN is suing Live Nation for 1.375 million shekels ($390,000). A date for an initial hearing in the case has not been set yet. Live Nation Israel did not respond to a request for comment.

According to the court filing, KAN provided Madonna with technical and logistical support that went beyond the Eurovision production, costs that were supposed to be covered by the singer’s team. The additional support included projectors, headphones, additional stage assistants, tents, security and other extra staff. KAN alleges that Live Nation agreed to cover those costs but never paid up, and attempts to recoup the money since the show have been unsuccessful.

Madonna’s appearance fee for the 2019 Eurovision was covered by Canadian-Israeli billionaire Sylvan Adams. KAN publicly battled with the Israeli government over funding for the show, and was forced to take out a 70 million shekel loan (about $20 million) to cover the costs.

The Material Girl’s Eurovision performance was controversial from the start. After drawn-out negotiations, Madonna signed a contract only two days before she took the stage during the show’s grand finale. And KAN producers and the Eurovision organizers were not pleased that the singer displayed Israeli and Palestinian flags on the backs of two dancers during the show, something that had not appeared during rehearsals.
