How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. The desktop top 50 may update before anything else so is always worth checking if the website is not up to date. However recently it has been known to not to do (even when the website has), so do check all sources. Also note that the Spotify Website will update before external websites (Kworb, LivePopBars). Occasionally there will be a delay in the Spotify chart updating which could even take days.

How often does the chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although this is not 100% guaranteed. Sometimes the top 200 on the website will update but without the top 50 on the app updating, and sometimes there will be no update at all.

How many plays on Spotify equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. (Spotify will let you play a song on repeat 600 times if you really want to).

The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread. For information on what songs are currently on ACR and what songs will be moving to ACR, refer to this thread.

How much does Spotify contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole, although good paid-for sales are still essential for making the very top of the chart in most cases. Spotify counts for at least half of all streaming sales (probably, we can't actually be sure on that), so doing well on Spotify is essential for doing well in the chart.

Why is my fave not doing well on Spotify?

Is it being promoted on one of Spotify's major curated playlists? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists, with over a million followers. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist.

Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped artists/releases such as Justin Bieber/Ed Sheeran/Drake who will of course enter straight at the top.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

I've wondered the same thing for 15 years I didn't even chart it first time round it came and went in a flash, yet Somebody Told Me topped my chart and All The Things That I've Done hit my top 10 twice in a few months, the album was fab I bought that - and I still didn't rate Mr Brightside as that special

I think it's a blokey song, optimistic and self-affirming in the face of losing a girl and getting jealous, which prob speaks to lots of dumped teen boys and older.

'Mr. Brightside' is a good song, but I think at this point I'd be happy to never hear it again. It's been so overdone.

Plus 'Somebody Told Me' was always so much better.

Mr Brightside is one of the greatest songs of all time. I know it's overplayed and stuff, but that to me just seals it as an all time fave due to me not tiring of it despite thinking that!

It's worth pointing out that when "Mr Brightside" was first released in 2004, the UK charts were physical only, hence why it didn't stick around at first. The Killers didn't really start to become truly popular until the start of 2005 when "Somebody Told Me" was re-released, and by that stage the band were nearing the end of their 1st album's cycle, so "Mr Brighside" didn't get a re-release. The song didn't have a chance to make the singles chart again until 2007 when downloads could chart on their own without a physical release, hence why it started re-entering the charts in 2007, and ever since.

Yeh Mr Brightside wasn't even given many plays on radio 1, not sure if it was playlisted or not at the time? By the rerelease of STM in Jan 2005 radio 1 were all over them after realising they were the real deal!

Why is Good as Hell entering now then?

'Mr. Brightside' getting a new peak yesterday in its 1,655th day in the Spotify top 200 according to Kworb *.

Wow at how high 'Thiago Silva' is, ACR coming to probably block it from being a much belated top 40 hit (although should still be comfortably top 100 for the first time).

I'm guessing the late entry for 'Good As Hell' is also Glastonbury impact?

Didn't realise #28 was its daily peak, have belatedly edited a [*NEW PEAK*] onto yesterday's post.

I expect it should be able to get a new weekly peak too, currently it is #37 achieved on 26/10/2017.

Amazed at how well 'Thiago Silva' is holding up, I guess there must be quite a few people hearing it for the first time now and essentially treating it as a new song (I've still not heard it myself oops x), could comfortably enter the top 40 this week even with ACR. It does but why should he suddenly be expected to debut at #1 all of a sudden when even the immediate predecessor to his huge global #1 hit (and one of the most streamed songs of all time) didn't? #9 is a very strong debut and his first top 10 debut since his album came out, absolutely nothing to be sniffed at. Let's not pretend a #1 debut is the only thing acceptable for an artist that has never had a #1 debut lol

HOW exactly is a new Ed and Bruno collaboration languishing at 133 three days after release?

I thought the public were eager for anything Ed releases? And based on name power alone I'd have expected this to be one of the biggest draws from the album.

I'm sure it will climb massively once it has a 'home' on the album next week but I'd have expected this to be at least top 20 on Spotify very easily. Looks like it would barely chart even without the three-track rule in place, which is absolutely shocking considering he took his entire album into the top 20 two years ago.

It looks like the Bieber remix of 'bad guy' is having its streams combined with the original for some reason rather than appearing as its own separate entry. Looking at the UK, US and global Spotify charts it's increased a lot more than any other song today.

Not saying they are, just that if he got say 9 of the top 10 he'd be called an underperformance for not having all 10 (and tbf that would be slightly more justified than most of the times every album gets called a flop because of how well his last album did but it's pretty obvious that this one won't do nearly as well).

He has 8 of the top 10 on Apple Music (11 top 15, the other 4 at 18, 28, 30 and poor brave 'BLOW' at 33), I don't know if that'll be replicated on Spotify or not.

I don't think being the first song on this album is that much of an advantage, as I posted elsewhere this seems more like the sort of thing where people will cherrypick the songs that seem more interesting to them rather than listening to the whole album all the way through. It should get a boost obviously but if it wasn't doing anywhere near 1m when it was first released it won't be now either.

(And even on his last album the first song on the album was one of the least successful songs )

If this album does actually fail to outsell Lewis Capaldi that'll be kind of surprising but I agree the real 'test' will be Ed's next proper album, this project is fundamentally different to his others and can't really be directly compared imo.

The track 1 thing generally has a bigger impact when track 1 *isn't* a pre-released single too. imagine was not Ariana's best-performing thank u, next album track on release week by any means, it was actually one of the lowest as I assume people skipped the track they already knew. needy, the first new song (and track 2 overall) was the best performing album track. That puts South of the Border in a good spot perhaps?

Interestingly the highest album track on Apple is actually the Stormzy collab (track 4 on the album and seemingly not getting much of a push in itself) although probably take that with a pinch of salt as UK rappers always seem to do better on Apple than Spotify for whatever reason (see MIST/Fredo going top 3 on Apple last week). The Travis Scott song is only 4th highest (7th highest including the singles) and behind the Eminem/50 Cent track even though it's both before it on the tracklist and actually being pushed as a single with a music video and all. Will probably do better on Spotify given it's #1 on New Music Friday but it's tough to predict what order the top 3 or 4 album tracks are going to be. I'm getting the feeling that none of the album tracks are going to do well enough to overtake the actual singles on the overall chart this week though, unless 'I Don't Care' is really destroyed by ACR.

Oh yes, good catch. How strange that it was combined for only one day. Ed really only having 8 of the top 10 then, even more of a flop!!! (And for that matter 'Old Town Road' is probably also still top 10 combined as well, the 2 versions in the top 200 are on 420k combined but I presume the Young Thug/Mason Ramsey remix is a separate entry which has just not made the top 200).

Think 'Beautiful People' should be able to nab at least a week at #1 now then unless these numbers die off really hard, but I could see 'Señorita' getting back ahead pretty soon regardless.

Same in the US as well. Massively down on Divide’s opening sales. Think this was always going to get nowhere near Divide. His next solo release will beat this but Divide is almost surely Ed’s “peak”. Not that he will care much as there’s only a tiny number of artists who will reach that kind of peak.

Must admit that if the opening quotes are correct for US and UK that’s surely lower than expected

Even if you take away the different scope of the project, it strikes me as a similar case to Taylor Swift's "reputation". Obviously a comedown from the previous album, but that was such a high that he's still pulling crazy numbers anyway, "reputation" was still the #1 album on Billboard's 2018 End Of Year chart, and I imagine Ed Sheeran will probably land at #3 if not higher here.

the label is definitely promoting it like Ed's comeback album not a side project, his label are promoting and advertising this like crazy. Not to mention a lead single with Bieber,
the several singles pushed to radio and streaming outlets, the track with Khalid being track #1 on every existing Spotify playlist etc etc

It’s not a “side project” it’s a mixtape. LSD flopping was because Diplo, Labrinth and Sia was a side project that didn’t receive the right kind of support... because it was a side project that was just for their own artistry basically. Song wise this is nothing like Plus/Multiply/Divide (Best Part Of Me could be a standard Ed album song, but I Don’t Care definitely not).

It's definitely fair to say it's a little different to his usual albums. Sure, it counts as a studio album but it's far from your typical studio album and it's definitely not in the same vain as +, x or ÷, so comparing to them is difficult and not especially fair. That said, it's not like we have anything else to compare to!

Ed's tracks holding up very well, he still has 9 of the top 10 on Apple as well. Hoping that 'Cross Me' will be able too hang onto its place in the overall chart (nice to see it finally making the top 5 on Spotify).

I was going to say the closest parallel to this project would probably be 'More Life', it's not a perfect comparison because this album has clearly been pushed more than that but I think it'll still follow about the same pattern, 'More Life' did pretty decently but not near as well as 'Views' and Drake then bounced back with 'Scorpion'. I'm sure Ed's next album will still be a commercial decline compared to '÷' but I'd be very shocked if it didn't perform better than 'No.6 Collaborations Project' (on the album chart that is, the decline he's having now on streaming / singles success is not even that big), as it'll be a much bigger physical sales draw.

Another much smaller scale example of something (sort of) like this that comes to mind is the recent Biffy Clyro soundtrack album, it was a whole new album of songs by Biffy which would usually be contending for #1 but because it was a soundtrack album and not a 'proper' album it only barely made the top 40. For whatever reason the public do seem to respond to the arbitrary distinction between artists' main 'studio albums' and other releases.

In other news good to see the new 'Old Town Road' remix making the chart today *.* easily a far better done remix than whatever that Bieber version of 'bad guy' is meant to be.

This is actually doing better than I thought? I was expecting a big come down from his previous album given the nature of this album, but it's dominating on streaming more than I thought so far. Of course it's only day two.

I'm sure his next solo album will likely be released in Q4 and sell ridiculous amounts. This album is a nice change of pace from Ed with some unexpected musical choices for him.

Of course Ed's label are going to promote this release, I just don't think either Ed or the label will have long term plans for it. The label will see it as a quick cash grab, Ed will see it as a side project and some experimentation. I guess there might be more videos but I don't see Ed doing traditional promo for it.

With the way the album chart works now though, it will inevitably pull in big streaming numbers for months on end, so will wrack up great sales and chart run even if the actual campaign is short lived on Ed and the labels part.

Ed has always promoted this as being a side project, how well it sells doesn't change that. It's a follow-up to an EP that he released before '+'. I'm pretty sure he's actually referred to this project as an EP as well (even though it's clearly too long to be called an EP, hence why I consider it to be more of a mixtape than an album).

edit: he's also called it a 'compilation album' in interviews. What you call it is arbitrary but it's disingenuous to act like it's not a different type of release to his 3 previous full albums.

I’m not an Ed Sheeran fan AT ALL, but I can admit that this is not the proper follow-up. And no I don’t think of H2BH and TUN as standalone eras more like continuations of the previous one. Pink is still on the Beautiful Trauma tour and Ariana is still on the Sweetener tour so it’s pretty obvious they’re the “main” albums. Another comparison would be Cheek to Cheek

unlike Ed, whose label are pushing his new album like crazy, Beyocne's is a really low key project, no songs are on any playlist, no HH, no Today's top hits, nothing

I still think she would do well if she came back with a proper pop/rnb single, the Lemonade era was damaged in the singles chart cos of the Tidal exclusive but she's on Spotify now

Schrödinger's Hot Hits, is it refusing to push new songs and thus making the chart stale, or is it accepting payola by playlisting songs that aren't actually the biggest hits? It's simultaneously both until you observe BuzzJack's Spotify thread to see which one people are complaining about at that particular moment.

Good for Freya though, and not surprised that Spotify are now pushing it on Hot Hits as they've been completely spamming the ad for the song.

AJ Tracey now having the 4th highest non Ed song *.* just seen it is top 10 in today's midweeks as well! Really hope it can hold that.

I see there has been essentially no impact from the news about Unknown T, a bit surprised at that.

Very pleased for Freya, it really is a great single. Maybe Castles can eventually ‘do a Tom Walker’ by peaking higher than a long-running low top ten hit but selling less in the long run.

I feel like there's still usually a bit more of a delay just because the update doesn't really force a roll out on the instant. So like, anyone who'd opened the playlist and not clicked off of it, won't necessarily see the update until a fair bit later, perhaps the next day when they've rebooted their device or something. I know sometimes I have to restart Spotify entirely just to get NMF to update

it doesn't matter of it was 4 or 5pm, the point is that it wasn't track #1 all day but just a few hours, hence the smaller effect
and now it's already down to #3 for some bizarre reason

The chart is stale because it's driven by the same people listening to the same songs every day for months on end. Nothing that the Official Charts Company or Spotify, Apple Music do will be able to change this.

15 of biggest losers last Friday to yesterday are all Ed Sheeran (his whole album) so safe to say that there are not new hits in the horizon from the album (songs that have clicked with people more since the release day). In other words, what are top 3 now (+IDC), are most likely the hits on the album and their longevity remains to be seen.

I wouldn't read too much into that, the 3 more popular are cos they're also on many playlists, thats why Beautiful People or Take em to London are higher, not cos of more album listeners, it's cos they're on HH, Todays Top Hits etc... sure that gives you the extra streams

if you factor that, Antisocial, the one with Eminem, the one with Camila, are probably more popular

and besides, any track they decide to push in the future would be a hit if the label pushes as usual and goes al the way to have the song as track #1 in every imaginable playlist like they did now with Beautiful People

I mean I get it’s not a proper Beyoncé “album” but still, none of the tracks debuting in the top 50 seems surprising. 'Lost Without You' never got any higher than #13 on Spotify (and no higher than #18 on weekly charts according to Kworb), 'Castles' is doing just fine to be only slightly lower than that after so many people assumed she'd be a one hit wonder. It's still climbing pretty consistently as well, no reason it can't continue to rise after this week (a la Sigrid's 'Don't Feel Like Crying' iirc).

problem with Castles is that it's already been #1 on HH, top #3 now, so not sure how much more new exposure it can get that it hasn't already got

I really like Freya Ridings, incredible voice + she can write great songs and for instance Lost Without You she wrote it solo on her own... she could write even better songs if paired with other songwriters ala Adele... so lots of potential

'Antisocial' has now finally overtaken 'Remember The Name' (#11 and #16 respectively). Hopefully means it will make it into the official chart when 'I Don't Care' and 'Cross Me' are both on ACR if not before that.

MIST has had a huge rise into the top 10 for the first time, Dominic Fike also up to another new peak of #12 and Sam Smith up to #24.

it was insta-added as track #20 on HH, he really cannot complain about that, few songs get better starts and only from bigger names than Sam (Ed, Taylor)

I actually think it's positive that songs are placed low on HH on release day and then moving them up with time, songs don't have to peak in week 1

'Good As Hell' is even older than 'Truth Hurts' lol ~ released in March 2016 so it is on permanent ACR indeed (unless the OCC make an exception for it since it seems to now be getting pushed as a current single for some reason).
