George Ezra and Kylie bring the fresh bops so far - looking forward to a number of other releases today!

Also have a soft spot for SDJM & Conor Maynard - "That Way"... takes off Backstreet Boys number 1 single "I Want It That Way"...

A lot of the new releases are a little... underwhelming.

Posted by: gavindeejay Jan 19 2018, 09:08 AM

So much new music out today! Would be nice to have abit of a clear out of the Top 40 but sadly it won’t happen!

Posted by: Lomadz Jan 19 2018, 09:17 AM

I really don't get the hate for supplies. Just seems it's cool to hate on JT now no matter what. People want celebs to speak out about racism, woman's issues etc but when he does it people hate it and say he is a privileged white. I really do hate what's happened to this world...left, feminist, PC bullying culture.

I was including Rudimental which is alright but hardly instant or a banger.

Agreed on Kylie though

So much this. Happend to Taylor last year, now him. Predictable and stupid and nothing to do with their music.

Nobody hates justin
Everybodys just disappointed cos of the
crappy 2 singles

All newies this week are terrible on 1st listen
The only semi decent one is Troye sivans
Even if it is zero original

Kylie at 4 I know It means nothing ATM as she hasn't had a sizeable hit in nearly a decade but that's impressive (did JT even get that high) even if sales are low hopefully she can hold up well and not do a steps

Posted by: iain Jan 19 2018, 10:08 AM

Kylie up to 2.

Posted by: Bré Jan 19 2018, 10:09 AM

Kylie up to #2, I imagine she'll do nothing on streaming but could get a top 40 hit for a week similar to Steps?

Posted by: M4NG0 Jan 19 2018, 10:19 AM

Wow @ Kylie, wasn't expecting it to go that high. I wanted it to be amazing but I'm a bit underwhelmed by it tbh unsure.gif

I don't get the hate for 'Supplies', and I don't get why it's flopping either, it's a hundred times better than 'Filthy'!

New George Ezra and Mabel/Not3s are decent too smile.gif

Posted by: gooddelta Jan 19 2018, 10:25 AM

I don't think Kylie's track is a mess at all.

It's way better and more interesting than Into The Blue for me, both lyrically and musically. I'm really happy with it and glad it's doing well for her on iTunes.

Again, this. To say it's just because NO ONE like all of a sudden his music that's a lie and to be blind. Nothing changes not for him or Taylor with their music, not 180 degrees change anyway and suddenly it's hated in the most ugly way. Fine they'll live.

Well with the music video being somewhat political it was always going to be controversial... and the song isn't the most accessible either.

I never expected Kylie to get anywhere near that high. ohmy.gif That's amazing.

With it being #2 on the NMF playlist and imagining it could get quite a few curiosity streams, maybe it could do alright on Spotify for one day at least?

I secretly hope BMG cashes out a bit on making Kylie to some key Spotify playlists, the song is potentially quite Spotify friendly and could turn into sizeable hit which should help launching the album a lot. All of that is wishful thinking of course.

He is awful and built his career on tearing Britney down with whinebucket songs.

As he said himself, what goes around, comes around.

Had Britney or a woman released cheese like CSTF it woulda flopped.

Although I'm definitely a Kylie fan, I'm also pretty straight forward - I absolutely hated 'Kiss Me Once', there's barely a half decent song on that album.
This feels different, 'dancing' is lyrically really nice and the song, whilst taking a few lostens, is ingrained in my head. I do think it will have at least some appeal outside of her fanbase, and she hasn't had a song like that since 'all the lovers'.

1. Eminem - 1.0000
2. Kylie - 0.9651

Next update and she should be #1

Posted by: ElectroTroye Jan 19 2018, 02:42 PM

Kylie heading for the top judging by the last Kworb update

1 Eminem - River (feat. Ed Sheeran) = 1.000 [Dark Red]
2 Kylie Minogue - Dancing = 0.9651 [Green]

Not that I could see when I checked back earlier today. Seemed to stall at #3 for ages (behind the World Cup songs 'Shout' and 'Waving Flag', if I recall correctly).

The last time we had Kylie and Eminem battling for number 1 was "Spinning Around" being knocked off by "The Real Slim Shady" laugh.gif though "Just Lose It" and "I Believe In You" must’ve been at the top end a similar time too!

Female no.1s last year: TWO

White men are the dominant force in society still... like by a lot. We don't even have equal pay yet. Female stars are set against each other and have fan wars, reducing their longevity. Radio1 FAPS over Pharrell, Robin Thycke etc but refuses to play women over a certain age...

People should highlight sexism. It's still not gone.

ie. a sign that last year simply had some pretty huge tracks by men. It's not sexism, it's just that huge hits from women were scarce in the first half of the year. In the latter part of the year, Taylor, Dua, P!nk, Camila, Rita and others proved, whether they got to #1 or not, that women can just as easily get big hits...

Now though, there being less female artists doing well on streaming services is maybe because urban music has dominated recently and there are lots more male than female popular urban performers around at the minute?

Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Rihanna and possibly Beyonce are releasing new albums this year.

Well it hasn't helped that Adele, Taylor, Rihanna and Beyonce have all held back releases from streaming/Spotify over the last few years.

That is what I'd say is the 4 biggest female artists in the industry who have taken a while to embrace streaming/Spotify fully for various reasons.

Passionfruit or anything from his last album didn’t get anywhere near Number 1 so at least there’s still some hope he won’t go to the top! I just previewed the song on iTunes and it bores me to death!

Posted by: Dexton Jan 20 2018, 10:30 AM

Drake has killed it again with "God's Plan". Love it. Hopefully another top 10 hit.

Posted by: Mart!n Jan 20 2018, 10:51 AM

I find Drake's music lately a bit of a miss anyway. I like to see Dua Lipa get another #1 to be honest next month, I think she deserves it, Ed Sheeran is just there in your face all the time, got nothing against the bloke, but he just needs to take a break, preferably like a 3 year break. And just let new British talent get there, Mabel and Jorja Smith are probably the ones to watch out for in 2018, not fan of Jorja Smith though, but I like to see new British talent get recognise at least. Ed Sheeran is just there constantly, he needs to bugger off a bit, pardon the expression.

Posted by: PeaceMob Jan 20 2018, 10:58 AM

Yeah "IDGAF" is a real grower, just like "New Rules" was. Wouldn't mind that at #1 at some point.

To be fair the Wembley/other 3-4 releases of Multiply didn’t really have any big singles. Lay It All On Me was big I guess so maybe an Ed Sheeran feature could come later on in the year after the 5th Divide single in Feb.

I like Ed Sheeran even though he is one of the most overplayed artists ever. I feel like he’ll still be mostly present throughout 2018 but after that won’t come back until 2022 with another album full of #1s. Hopefully next time he’ll learn not to double release like he did with Castle & Shape so he can grab an extra #1 kink.gif

Omg, actually quoting Snake as a voice of truth here ohmy.gif

I really don’t see the sexism most claim. So no.1s were a bit male heavy at the beginning of last year. Between June and September 2006, McFly were the only male artists to get a no.1 with Sandi Thom, Nelly Furtado, Shakira, Lily Allen and Beyonce all being at the top spot. That’s not forgetting the massive hits from Rihanna, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton, Cassie and the female fronted Rogue Traders and Cascada being massive chart forces. Are we supposed to be more sexist now than we were then?

It’s extremely naive to label the music buying public as sexist purely based on who’s no.1. It actually detracts from the fact that a lot of male artists are making music people love. Most of the public don’t base their listening habits on an artists’ gender. There were lots of big female lead hits last year in the end and there will always continue to be.

Signs was never a single and came as weird and was after 20 songs that sounds the same from him. This is really good and I hope his streams will be huge to win the worst number 1 now. Let's face it, it's sales are bigger as of now than river but even if he'll be behind.. River streaming power is not THAT impressive. It's doable.

With even the slightest bit of streaming support she could be a surefire #1 contender. All she needs is to be Hot Hits, even if she was low down on the playlist she'd be getting plays to put her into the Top 200, then from then on she'd just continue up.

Very surprised to see Drake so high, but God's Plan is a tune! Really reminds me of 'Take Care' era Drake.

They deleted the single version at some time yesterday. The other two versions (one from the explicit soundtrack and the other from the clean version) were well outside the Top 200 then but now I’m seeing one version at 73 and the other at 99 on kworb.

arrow down.gif 18. Kylie - Dancing

Posted by: Steve201 Jan 21 2018, 02:28 PM

Kylie performing a bit like Steps last week, the pace it's falling makes me think it'll prob not go top 40 as she's prob only sold around 1000-3000 copies since Friday.

On the gender debate I think radio plays a mix of both. I personally don't take any notice of the gender of the artists and listen to the song before Deciding if I like it....

Hope Strangers can continue to build a decent download lead and spotify playlists it. The performance on Norton was really brill on Friday!

Posted by: 777666jason Jan 21 2018, 02:32 PM

Why does drake keep releasing 2 songs at a time 1 always flops

Also are the same people buying all 3 versions of perfect they been close the last few days laugh.gif

Posted by: Avicii Jan 21 2018, 03:33 PM

I think the whole point of Drake dropping two songs at once is one is catered for the radio/charts and the other is more for the fans. It's essentially a modern-day B-side.

Plus, 'Diplomatic Immunity' isn't necessarily flopping, it's top 20 on Spotify and quite a few people are probably buying the whole 'Scary Hours' release (19p cheaper than buying both songs separately) which only counts towards the chart position of 'God's Plan'.

Posted by: Steve201 Jan 21 2018, 03:46 PM

How is it unfair? the song is as low as it is because people who use iTunes are not liking it as much as the other 18 songs ahead of it. There's nothing unfair about the iTunes chart, it's all based on fact unlike some other charts at the moment.

The Kylie song is so generic imo, just sounds like a Kygo dancepop song, tbh I am glad it is falling now.

So disappointing from Kylie to see her following today's boring slow dancepop trend, considering I like a lot of her songs sad.gif

To be fair a lot of her previous stuff is also "slow dancepop" (Into The Blue for example) so I don't think you can accuse her of jumping on any current trends.

Posted by: The Snake Jan 22 2018, 12:30 PM

Maybe I was a bit harsh, I suppose the verses are good on 'Dancing' but it just the chorus and drop that makes it sound generic to me.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Jan 22 2018, 12:42 PM

I really refute the suggestion that it sounds like Kygo.

Posted by: Bjork Jan 22 2018, 12:55 PM

amazed anyone can suggest the new kylie sounds like kygo
for someone obsessed with classifying every song, you're clueless as usual

Posted by: The Snake Jan 22 2018, 12:57 PM

Well it does sound in terms of style like that sort of It Ain't Me-esque mix of country influenced verses, slow dance chorus and pitched vocal drop to me!

Anyway......

I wish Diplomatic Immunity was the Drake song doing well, its better than God's Plan imo. I don't like Drake's singing at all really, his rapping is better.

Posted by: Midge Jan 22 2018, 12:58 PM

"Dancing" is not slow/downtempo, it is mid-tempo. Just like "Slow" or "All The Lovers".

Posted by: Jonjo Jan 22 2018, 01:22 PM

'Slow' and 'All The Lovers' are her two best! What a forgotten beauty 'Slow' is wub.gif

And if 'Dancing' sounds like anything, it's Wiktoria - As I Lay Me Down (just obviously a slower tempo & not as powerful imo)

While i would not be as harsh, this comment isnt to far from the truth for me. I really believe Kylie could have come back with something far better than this. Kylie, knows how to make a comeback, she has done it several times in the past but she returned with something that was different and she knew how to draw attention to herself. While, the days of big Kylie success are over i still don't think she can manage to deliver material that her hardcore fans truly enjoy let alone the mass public.

I do think with acts Kylie and Madonna, their days of single success coincided with CD singles dying out around 2010 time. They used to rely on fans collecting those to give them those boosts up the chart. Plus that was around the time Radio 1 dumped them too.

Well 4 Minutes and Give It 2 Me we’re big hits still, and Celebration did ok in the charts so there was definitely still interest in Madge around that era and for a few years after.

MDNA definitely seemed like the point things stopped going so well. GMAYL just scraping top 40 (from what I recall it got hindered by instant grat rules at the time), seemed to be all most radio stations that cater to young audiences needed to justify not playing her anymore.

I noticed a pattern that every artist who has topped the chart between 98 and 99 refuses to allow their music onto compilations (Ed Sheeran, Eminem and Drake) which means that NOW 99 could be without a #1

Ed Sheeran allowed Galway Girl on to 98, so might just let 'Perfect' onto 99. It's only SOY he hasn't licensed out to compelations.

They've all been signed and released singles, but I'd definitely not say full label launch laugh.gif It says it all that the highest 2nd single (ie not their winning single) is Andrea's Dancing In The Dark at number 103 laugh.gif Tbh that's part of the reason why I can't get into The Voice properly, it hardly matters who wins. It's like a glorified karaoke competition, you get all these people saying they entered because they want to be as big as Beyonce or whatever but in reality if the're lucky they'll scrape like top 75 with their winning single and maybe have a one week wonder top 40 album. Ed Sheeran allowed Galway Girl on to 98, so might just let 'Perfect' onto 99. It's only SOY he hasn't licensed out to compelations.

He’s 50/50 with licensing. The only compilations he allows his music onto is the main NOW series hence why he’s never on any of their spin-offs or any other compilation

He's licensed Perfect to Bravo Hits 100 in Germany so I think it will definitely appear on Now 99, odd that Shape Of You was vetoed but every other single is apparently fair game.

The new JT won't do a thing of course but it's a masterpiece and everyone loves it.

I'm loving another one hit wonder indie hit but why do they always have to be so watered down that they sound like everything else in the chart - bit like a maroon 5 song?!

Agreed, is a classic. Just incredible! No wonder people are losing interest in the charts knowing that songs like this flop.

Well it's already playlisted on Radio 2, so hopefully the local stations such as Heart who ignored 'Filthy' will get on board with this!

Ooh it is? ohmy.gif

I had a feeling this will be one of those songs that gets big airplay on the more adult stations, but doesn't do anything chart wise. I can see it being a big hit on US radio tbh. Especially if he services it to Country and adult contemporary stations.

Isn't Lady Gaga only releasing an acoustic version of a Joanne album track?

Or is there actually something more exciting than that coming tomorrow?

Amy update on JT or flopping? It's doing the best so far in the US, already 6.

I have heard the odd song by both of them which I'm sure is directly comparable.
