How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. The desktop top 50 may update before anything else so is always worth checking if the website is not up to date. However recently it has been known to not to do, so do check all sources. Also note that the Spotify Website will update before external websites (Kworb, LivePopBars).

How often does the chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the morning - although this is not 100% guaranteed. Sometimes the top 200 on the website will update but without the top 50 on the app updating, and sometimes there will be no update at all.

How many plays on Spotify equals one download sale?

150 plays. However you cannot simply play a song 150 times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. (Spotify will let you play a song on repeat 150 times if you really want to). This used to be 100 plays but the ratio was revised by the OCC at the start of 2017.

How much does Spotify contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes approximately 90% to the singles chart as a whole, although good paid-for sales are still essential for making the very top of the chart in most cases. Spotify counts for at least 70% of all streaming sales, so doing well on Spotify is essential for doing well in the chart.

Why is my fave not doing well on Spotify?

Is it being promoted on one of Spotify's major curated playlists? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists, with over a million followers. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist.

Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience (i.e. 'Love My Life' by Robbie Williams) or campaign songs (i.e. 'Liar Liar' by Captain Ska). Also keep in mind that it takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

Also keep in mind that the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped artists/releases such as Justin Bieber/Ed Sheeran/Drake who will of course enter straight at the top.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Surprised at the longevity of Post Malone... I don't actually know many people who like the song much. Suppose it is big in America though, wish a song like 'Caroline' could have had this success.

That Moon Taxi song got added to Today's Top Hits about 2 weeks ago, which is how it's been climbing the worldwide Spotify chart. It's also on Mood Booster, Ultimate Indie, Happy Hits!, TGIF... quite a few semi-big Spotify-owned playlists.

Summer holidays are actually starting now. Hopefully people start coming back from them and this gives an extra push to Despacito. This might be an unpopular opinion in this forum, but I would like it to get at least 10+ weeks at #1. Wild Thoughts is okay, the best bit is obviously the Santana's guitar. I'd rather listen to Maria Maria. Hopefully next #1 is not Bieber or Sheeran related either.

There's just so much good new music in the 51-100 section, I just wish they'd all hurry up and break into the top 50.

Anyway, realistically, we can expect Dua Lipa & Jax Jones to break into tomorrow's top 50. God knows how Dua has took off in the space of 2 days :')

I didn't realise Magnolia was starting to take off here too. I wonder if it can be the next US cross-over hit (or just show promising signs and end up flopping like "Broccoli" did last year, for example). It is a bit of a bop but I do prefer other recent hits like "XO Tour Llif3" and "Congratulations" tbh.

I was just typing this The peaks are slightly higher if you go for daily rather than weekly (#10, #14, #15, #21 for the first 4). Also 'New Rules' is #53 Global, which is higher than everything but 'Scared To Be Lonely'. I'm really impressed by how well it's doing.

#56 is fine, not amazing but not awful either. Remember the Linkin Park songs have made it enter lower than it otherwise would have.

Still think it can manage a top 10 hit on Friday with its physicals making up for a slight streaming deficit but it won't debut top 5.

So it appears that "Daniel Marcy" and "Jenny Duncan"s songs have been removed, but they are still visible although greyed out in the UK Top 50, which hasn't updated for today yet either, nor is the website showing anything. Expect their respective songs to drop a bit in the next update as they won't come up when people shuffle the top 50.

I was thinking today how on Apple Music the new releases don't have the same drop. And how it's because Spotify doesn't advertise new releases in the same way. Like Louis is #30 on there, Lana's album is #2, and her tracks are continuing to climb rather than fall.

I know they have a little 'new releases' section, but it make sense if Spotify had like a little New Releases sidebar or a hot songs section or something more prominent.

don't think so, it's a lot harder to manipulate the Spotify chart as you need 115k streams to just make the Spotify top 50 at #50, but about 320 sales to achieve the same chart position on iTunes.

Maybe Spotify are so 'ethical' that they only allow record companies to buy these playlist slots, as opposed to individuals, like Kamaliya's husband.

To make any impact whatsoever though it would need Hot Hits UK, which would never happen in a million years because it would blow payola-gate wide open if Spotify let that onto their key playlist. Eyebrows would then be well and truly raised about the dubious compilation of those playlists.

Bless her on Twitter though raving about her "growing success in Ireland" due to the iTunes #1 there. I'd be amazed if the song has even amassed five genuine sales, and those would be curiosity buys.

It was pointed out to me in the 'affected positions due to new ratio' thread that Rita and Camila will be safe from ACR, as they experienced a sales increase (despite them not gaining as much as the overall market did).

Maggie had a sales decrease however, so she will be on ACR.
