Ultimate 'Casualties of Streaming' Rate: THE RESULTS

Join me this afternoon at the traditional chart show slot of 4pm as we count down the Top 40 songs that missed the Top 40 due to the addition of streaming to the singles chart! Until then any predictions are welcome.

Posted by: coi Aug 4 2019, 09:04 AM

Looking forward to this!

Posted by: Bjork Aug 4 2019, 09:15 AM

Think its gonna be the battle of the fuego-lovers vs the fuego-haters smile.gif

How many voted?

Posted by: lewistgreen Aug 4 2019, 11:36 AM

Fuego wasn't even on my radar unsure.gif

Posted by: dobbo Aug 4 2019, 11:49 AM

Losing It would be my prediction but I wasn't following the voting thread closely.

Posted by: Bjork Aug 4 2019, 12:05 PM

hope indie/alt songs do well but haven't seen many voting for those, seen more votes for dance songs I think or silly throwaway tracks ala Fuego biggrin.gif

Posted by: coi Aug 4 2019, 12:07 PM

I think Everything Now will do quite well at least.

40. Flume feat. Tove Lo ~ Say It

Year charted: 2016
Official chart peak: #69
Sales chart peak: #33

Points scored in final: 91
Group position: 4th
Points scored in group: 64

Flume briefly made the sales chart with 'Say It' thanks to the release of a Clean Bandit remix, although the original sold better in the long-term. It still remains his highest charting song to date as both it and 'Never Be Like You' were truly robbed of being hit singles despite R1 support.

39. Ariana Grande feat. Mac Miller ~ The Way

Year charted: 2017 [originally 2013]
Official chart peak: #41
Sales chart peak: #37

Points scored in final: 92
Group position: 5th
Points scored in group: 78

Originally her first charting hit from before she was the huge popstar she is today, 'The Way' briefly re-entered the sales chart following her performance of it at the Manchester benefit concert alongside ex boyfriend Mac Miller (RIP).

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 03:10 PM

38. Clean Bandit feat. Stylo G ~ Come Over

Year charted: 2014
Official chart peak: #45
Sales chart peak: #38

Points scored in final: 99
Group position: 2nd
Points scored in group: 91

Following the huge 'Rather Be' and the top 5 hit 'Extraordinary' Clean Bandit struggled to get a post-album hit. 'Come Over', with vocals from Grace and Stylo G just missed out and they quickly made another Jess Glynne collab for their next release.

37. Ferreck Dawn & Redondo ~ Love Too Deep

Year charted: 2014
Official chart peak: #48
Sales chart peak: #34

Points scored in final: 99
Group position: 3rd
Points scored in group: 91

One of my personal favourites of the deep house era, this with its 'Show Me Love' sample (alongside a more prominent sample of another song whose title escapes me) should have been massive but sadly became one of the first streaming casualties.

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 03:14 PM

36. Louisa Johnson ~ Best Behaviour

Year charted: 2017
Official chart peak: #48
Sales chart peak: #17

Points scored in final: 100
Group position: 4th
Points scored in group: 77

Following her X Factor win she had a decent sized top 20 hit in 'So Good' but struggled to get a hit ever since, with this and 'Yes' both failing to reach the top 40 and now she seems destined to forever guest on dance DJ singles.

35. Just Us ~ Cloudbusting

Year charted: 2017
Official chart peak: DNC
Sales chart peak: #39

Points scored in final: 100
Group position: 2nd
Points scored in group: 84

Sampling the Kate Bush song and turning it into a dance anthem, sadly this completely failed to take off on streaming which in 2017 meant no official chart peak.

Number of positive points -> Number of votes -> Top score
Revealed at the end

Posted by: Jason Aug 4 2019, 03:20 PM

Love Too Deep and Best Behaviour my faves so far. biggrin.gif

Posted by: coi Aug 4 2019, 03:28 PM

Fantastic first four in the top 40, not so keen on the two just announced though.

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 03:33 PM

34. DJ Fresh feat. Ellie Goulding ~ Flashlight

Year charted: 2014
Official chart peak: #47
Sales chart peak: #35

Points scored in final: 100
Group position: 3rd
Points scored in group: 67

As streaming was starting to go in, DJ Fresh was starting to go out, and even an Ellie feature couldn't get this into the top 40. To be fair it's not one of his best singles anyway.

33. Years & Years ~ All For You

Year charted: 2018
Official chart peak: #47
Sales chart peak: #39

Points scored in final: 103
Group position: 1st
Points scored in group: 99

Following a big return with 'If You're Over Me' Years & Years struggled to get a follow-up hit even with this better single, until they guested on a Jax Jones song later that year.

Posted by: Bjork Aug 4 2019, 03:35 PM

Flume - Say it, the best of the ones we've had so far
saw Tove Lo play it live and was really great

Posted by: Jason Aug 4 2019, 03:36 PM

I thought Flashlight would do better because there are some big Ellie Goulding fans here.

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 03:39 PM

32. George Ezra ~ Listen To The Man

Year charted: 2014
Official chart peak: #41
Sales chart peak: #30

Points scored in final: 106
Group position: 2nd
Points scored in group: 84

After two massive hits George got very close to getting another top 40 hit with this but the album had already sold a lot by this point so #41 wasn't too bad for it.

31. Disclosure feat. Gregory Porter ~ Holding On

Year charted: 2015
Official chart peak: #46
Sales chart peak: #28

Points scored in final: 107
Group position: 1st
Points scored in group: 114

Disclosure's return sadly saw them struggle to get another top 40 with both this and 'Bang That' (#52 in this countdown) before they did a second Sam Smith collab.

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 03:42 PM

30. Andy C & Fiora ~ Heartbeat Loud

Year charted: 2014
Official chart peak: #50
Sales chart peak: #34

Points scored in final: 108
Group position: 6th
Points scored in group: 48

One of the biggest names in drum n' bass did a rare commercial single in 2014 but unfortunately that was not enough to get him a second top 40 hit following his 2001 #28 hit 'Body Rock'.

29. Kiiara ~ Gold

Year charted: 2016
Official chart peak: #48
Sales chart peak: #35

Points scored in final: 109
Group position: 5th
Points scored in group: 80

This felt like a big hit and it did spend a decent amount of time in the chart but this was back in 2016 when top 40 turnover was slower than ever. She fell off the radar fast afterwards however aside from a Linkin Park collab.

Posted by: jimwatts Aug 4 2019, 03:47 PM

Only voted in the final for Listen To The Man out of the songs so far. I'm guessing most of the older songs (Tiny Dancer etc.) didn't make it this high

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 03:49 PM

28. Royal Blood ~ Figure It Out

Year charted: 2015 [originally 2014]
Official chart peak: #43
Sales chart peak: #36

Points scored in final: 111
Group position: 1st
Points scored in group: 123

Royal Blood became one of the biggest new bands of the year with a #1 album and this song which became their highest charting single.

27. Axwell /\ Ingrosso ~ Sun Is Shining

Year charted: 2015
Official chart peak: #56
Sales chart peak: #37

Points scored in final: 114
Group position: 4th
Points scored in group: 89

Following the split of Swedish House Mafia two of the members made their own group, with this becoming one of their biggest hits in Europe but sadly not doing too much here.

Posted by: coi Aug 4 2019, 03:50 PM

Two more great tracks there, Figure It Out was unlucky to miss the top 40.

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 03:55 PM

26. LP ~ Lost On You

Year charted: 2017
Official chart peak: DNC
Sales chart peak: #39

Points scored in final: 115
Group position: 5th
Points scored in group: 64

Another big European hit, but not given much of a UK push outside of Radio 2 and I think a TV appearance which put it in the sales top 40. Could've been big with a Spotify push.

25. KEiiNO ~ Spirit in the Sky

Year charted: 2019
Official chart peak: #61
Sales chart peak: #07

Points scored in final: 119
Group position: 3rd
Points scored in group: 90

The British public's favourite of the latest Eurovision which quickly made its way into the iTunes top 10 after the show but of course didn't do too well on streaming.

Posted by: coi Aug 4 2019, 03:56 PM

Yay! I was expecting Spirit in the Sky to miss out so that's brilliant to see!

Posted by: Jason Aug 4 2019, 03:57 PM

I wish Spirit in The Sky was the highest Eurovision entry, but I think Fuego is still to come. drama.gif

Posted by: Bjork Aug 4 2019, 03:58 PM

Lost on You is so good, could easily have done a 3 Nights with a proper Spotify push that never had... too bad, LP is great

and it didn't even make the top 100? big boo UK people :/

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 04:02 PM

24. Alice Merton ~ No Roots

Year charted: 2018
Official chart peak: #52
Sales chart peak: #15

Points scored in final: 119
Group position: 5th
Points scored in group: 77

Another European smash but misalignment of its radio and Spotify push seemed to kill its chances of going top 40.

23. Antony & The Johnsons ~ Hope There's Someone

Year charted: 2016 [originally 2005]
Official chart peak: #44
Sales chart peak: #24

Points scored in final: 120
Group position: 4th
Points scored in group: 70

This song, which was also covered on Avicii's debut album 'True', was briefly brought back to the chart following a performance by The Voice contestants, having peaked at #44 upon its original release.

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 04:06 PM

22. Henry Krinkle ~ Stay

Year charted: 2014
Official chart peak: #41
Sales chart peak: #23

Points scored in final: 120
Group position: 2nd
Points scored in group: 91

Another deep house track which was seemingly randomly given a Radio 1 push, but unfortunately streaming was starting to have a real effect on these types of songs at this point and it just missed the top 40.

21. CLiQ feat. Alika ~ Wavey

Year charted: 2018
Official chart peak: #44
Sales chart peak: #33

Points scored in final: 121
Group position: 8th
Points scored in group: 63

One of my favourite tracks of last year, it looked like it was going to eventually make the top 40 at some point after a lengthy climb but unfortunately stalled just outside.

Posted by: coi Aug 4 2019, 04:08 PM

Another two good ones there, Henry Krinkle was definitely robbed.

Posted by: Bjork Aug 4 2019, 04:11 PM

No Roots and Lost Without You, I always mix those 2 songs actually biggrin.gif

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 04:11 PM

20. Martin Solveig feat. Sam White ~ ę +1 Ľ

Year charted: 2015
Official chart peak: #51
Sales chart peak: #25

Points scored in final: 121
Group position: 2nd
Points scored in group: 89

Following a big hit with 'Intoxicated' Martin Solveig unfortunately struggled to get a follow-up with this underperforming, though he eventually did get another hit with 'Places' in 2017.

19. Sub Focus & Dimension ~ Desire

Year charted: 2019
Official chart peak: #51
Sales chart peak: #26

Points scored in final: 121
Group position: 4th
Points scored in group: 66

Most of us weren't expecting Sub Focus to get a hit in 2019 but 'Desire' stuck around in the lower reaches of the chart for a short while, out-living some of his former top 40 hits too. A great result but if only it could've climbed just a little bit further to get drum n' bass back in the top 40 after literal years.

Posted by: Bjork Aug 4 2019, 04:14 PM

Anthony & The Johnsons - Hope there's Someone
that got my max points, one of the most beautiful songs in the history of music, from one of the best albums ever, I am a Bird Now
a very haunting song written from the guts and sung from the guts, you can almost feel the pain in the way Anthony sings and plays/hits the piano in the final coda of there song... not many songs are capable of transmitting so much raw emotion

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 04:15 PM

18. Eleni Foureira ~ Fuego

Year charted: 2018
Official chart peak: #64
Sales chart peak: #27

Points scored in final: 122
Group position: 5th
Points scored in group: 70

One of Buzzjack's favourite Eurovision entries ever and the highest one in this rundown, but to the surprise of some of you doesn't even reach anywhere near the top 10!

17. CHVRCHES ~ Get Away

Year charted: 2014
Official chart peak: #52
Sales chart peak: #29

Points scored in final: 123
Group position: 3rd
Points scored in group: 87

Serving as the comeback for CHVRCHES for their second era, streaming wasn't kind to them especially for the time (29-52 being one of the biggest drops for 2014). They finally got a proper hit this year however by collabing with Marshmello.

I wonder if Modestep was the last one?

Year charted: 2018
Official chart peak: #64
Sales chart peak: #27

Points scored in final: 122
Group position: 5th
Points scored in group: 70

One of Buzzjack's favourite Eurovision entries ever and the highest one in this rundown, but to the surprise of some of you doesn't even reach anywhere near the top 10!

To be honest I was surprised to see some Fuego haters here. 6 negative points I think. unsure.gif

Sigma still had hits in 2016 (Cry and Find Me), I think those are the last DnB hits (if Find Me even counts as DnB).

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 04:22 PM

16. Ellie Goulding ~ Something In The Way You Move

Year charted: 2015
Official chart peak: #51
Sales chart peak: #31

Points scored in final: 124
Group position: 6th
Points scored in group: 53

Released as a promotional single here but proper single in the US, this never got a real push here so never got the chance to better its #51 peak.

15. Jamie xx feat. Romy ~ Loud Places

Year charted: 2015
Official chart peak: #62
Sales chart peak: #40

Points scored in final: 125
Group position: 2nd
Points scored in group: 84

Released from Jamie xx's solo album with guest vocals from Romy also of The xx, this gained the most traction of his solo material.

Songs with Birdy and Take That being the last DnB hits in the UK laugh.gif

I donít even think Iíve heard that Henry Krinkle track before let alone seeing it get to #41 ohmy.gif

Posted by: Bjork Aug 4 2019, 04:25 PM

thank God Fuego is not higher smile.gif

really thought Ellie was gonna be top 10, SITWYM is one of her best

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 04:26 PM

14. Oasis ~ Half the World Away

Year charted: 2015
Official chart peak: #56
Sales chart peak: #29

Points scored in final: 126
Group position: 1st
Points scored in group: 114

Originally released as a B-side in the 90s this eventually charted on its own after a cover version was used in the John Lewis Christmas ad. It's better known than quite a few of their actual singles anyhow so at least it has a top 75 peak.

13. Anton Powers & Pixie Lott ~ Baby

Year charted: 2017
Official chart peak: #97
Sales chart peak: #31

Points scored in final: 127
Group position: 3rd
Points scored in group: 76

Anton Powers gave Pixie Lott an unlikely top 100 hit as late as 2017, but a lack of streaming really hammered its chart peak and neither artist has made the chart since.

How did you miss it?!

Posted by: Bjork Aug 4 2019, 04:32 PM

Oasis doing very well but it's a great song
their early b-sides are better than anything they did after album 2

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 04:34 PM

12. Twenty One Pilots ~ Jumpsuit

Year charted: 2018
Official chart peak: #50
Sales chart peak: #28

Points scored in final: 129
Group position: 2nd
Points scored in group: 102

Twenty One Pilots released this as their comeback which unexpectedly (given their big previous era) missed the top 40, though that was not as surprising given it wasn't as commercial as their previous hits.

11. Vampire Weekend ~ This Life

Year charted: 2019
Official chart peak: #89
Sales chart peak: #31

Points scored in final: 129
Group position: 3rd
Points scored in group: 80

Vampire Weekend took a while but eventually came back with new material this year, this song being the only chart hit produced but as with most indie bands not having enough streaming to go anywhere near the top 40.

Posted by: coi Aug 4 2019, 04:36 PM

Surprised at those two being this high here! Really liked Jumpsuit but not a fan of This Life.

Posted by: Bjork Aug 4 2019, 04:37 PM

hahaha totally opposite, This Life is a 10/10, one of the songs of the year and best thing VW have ever done

while 21 Pilots are an over-rated band and this song does nothing to me

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 04:40 PM

10. Christine and the Queens ~ Girlfriend (feat. D‚m-Funk)

Year charted: 2018
Official chart peak: #85
Sales chart peak: #20

Points scored in final: 132
Group position: 2nd
Points scored in group: 94

Released as the first single of her 2nd album, the brilliant 'Girlfriend' did well on sales thanks to good airplay and TV promo but very much struggled on streaming, leaving 'Titled' as a one-off fluke hit.

09. Rihanna ~ Kiss It Better

Year charted: 2016
Official chart peak: #46
Sales chart peak: #30

Points scored in final: 136
Group position: 1st
Points scored in group: 96

Released as the second single of 'Anti' (still her most recent album to date!!) this sadly was overshadowed by 'Work' which was still a massive hit at this point and quickly got replaced by third single 'Needed Me'.

Posted by: Jason Aug 4 2019, 04:43 PM

I say NO to number 10 and number 9. teresa.gif

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 04:44 PM

08. Carly Rae Jepsen ~ Run Away With Me

Year charted: 2015
Official chart peak: #58
Sales chart peak: #30

Points scored in final: 138
Group position: 2nd
Points scored in group: 87

Carly Rae's follow-up to #3 hit 'I Really Like You' failed to be a proper hit but was one of the most loved songs of the decade on internet forums, surprisingly this wasn't even in contention for #1 here despite it regularly being a RotD contender.

07. Troye Sivan feat. Ariana Grande ~ Dance To This

Year charted: 2018
Official chart peak: #64
Sales chart peak: #40

Points scored in final: 141
Group position: 3rd
Points scored in group: 71

Even Ariana at her peak couldn't give Troye Sivan a hit with this surprisingly falling well short of the top 40, though in this contest it easily out-performs the rest of Ariana's entries.

Posted by: coi Aug 4 2019, 04:44 PM

Not a fan of any of the top ten so far actually.

06. The Avener & Phoebe Killdeer ~ Fade Out Lines

Year charted: 2015
Official chart peak: #60
Sales chart peak: #39

Points scored in final: 149
Group position: 1st
Points scored in group: 107

Another big European hit which failed to really take off here, this chill house track was the only chart entry for either artist. Surprised it's this well loved actually.

05. The 1975 ~ Somebody Else

Year charted: 2016
Official chart peak: #55
Sales chart peak: #29

Points scored in final: 173
Group position: 2nd
Points scored in group: 113

Starting the top 5 is one of The 1975's biggest selling singles but one that failed to reach the top 40 as it was released whilst 'The Sound' was still doing well.

Posted by: jimwatts Aug 4 2019, 04:49 PM

There'd better be some Lana in the top 10
...but happy those last two made it this high

Posted by: coi Aug 4 2019, 04:49 PM

Fade Out Lines coming at #6 - that's more like it! cheer.gif

Posted by: Jason Aug 4 2019, 04:51 PM

Fade Out Lines is probably my least fave dance track in the list.

Posted by: Bjork Aug 4 2019, 04:54 PM

The Troye/Ariana track is the biggest mystery to me, having Ariana on board and still totally flopping
and it's a great song, best in the top 10 so far

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 04:54 PM

04. FISHER ~ Losing It

Year charted: 2019
Official chart peak: #60
Sales chart peak: #33

Points scored in final: 186
Group position: 1st
Points scored in group: 114

Fisher's breakthrough single became one of the biggest dance songs of recent times, being a huge club hit in 2018 and eventually crossing over to the lower reaches of the chart as well as getting R1 playlisted, though unfortunately that wasn't enough for it to go top 40.

03. The Chemical Brothers ~ Go

Year charted: 2015
Official chart peak: #46
Sales chart peak: #32

Points scored in final: 197
Group position: 1st
Points scored in group: 127

'Go' saw The Chemical Brothers and Q-Tip back together after the brilliant 'Galvanize' from 10 years earlier, giving them their first chart hit in many years (and probably their last ever given how uncommercial their new material is) but just missing the top 40.

It's between Arcade Fire and Duke Dumont for the #1 spot then, all will be revealed just before 6pm as we soon head over to the First Look chart.

Posted by: Bjork Aug 4 2019, 04:55 PM

the Christine & The Queens track is ok-ish, not a patch on Tilted or the better tracks of her debut
the Rihanna track is nice enough

Posted by: coi Aug 4 2019, 04:56 PM

Another two brilliant dance tracks there!

Posted by: jimwatts Aug 4 2019, 04:59 PM

This is a great top 6

Posted by: danG Aug 4 2019, 04:59 PM

02. Arcade Fire ~ Everything Now

Year charted: 2017
Official chart peak: #50
Sales chart peak: #24

Points scored in final: 214
Group position: 1st
Points scored in group: 131

'Everything Now' saw Arcade Fire get an unlikely hit in the streaming era, doing very well to reach #50 but it really deserved even better, being their best song by some distance for me anyway.

01. Duke Dumont ~ Ocean Drive

Year charted: 2015
Official chart peak: #42

Which leaves 'Ocean Drive' as your favourite 'casualty of streaming'! The song gave Duke Dumont his biggest hit across Europe but was very unlucky to underperform in his home country. Not my fave song of his actually but it definitely deserved a bigger peak, a great winner anyhow!

Thank God the top 2 is amazing. dance.gif
Also liked Losing It in the top 10, but I could change all the rest of the top 10 tbh. blink.gif

Aww at Kygo 'winning' that shameful position. sad.gif
Also gutted to see Purple Disco Machine just missing out on top 40 thanks to break-tie criteria. sad.gif
Thanks for doing this Dan, much apprecisted! biggrin.gif

haha until the very end I thought Lana - Love was gonna be #1 biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
not crazy about the results tbh quite disappointing
only really like Troye/Ariana in that top 10

Posted by: jimwatts Aug 4 2019, 05:04 PM

Yeah the way the votes were going I thought Ocean Drive was going to take this. It had one of the longer runs in the top 100 of the songs here so it's a worthy winner.

Posted by: Peral-Turret32 Aug 4 2019, 05:34 PM

Fun Fact: The old man in the Listen To The Man music video was played by Ian McKellen (who also played the role of a vampire in the music video to the Pet Shop Boys' Heart)

I love the idea of the top 40! A solid top 5 (pleased/somewhat surprised to see Losing It so high here) but I love all of #6-#10 (omg Carly not winning with a ROTD winner track ohmy.gif ). Happy to see high placings for Baby (I'd never realised how stark the sales peak vs. official peak was, deserved better tbh), Half the World Away, Loud Places, +1, Stay, Hope There's Someone, Lost on You (! that this never officially charted), Gold, Heartbeat Loud, All for You, Best Behaviour and The Way among others wub.gif Didn't expect Lana to miss top 40 with both songs & poor Rollin placing last tongue.gif

Thanks Dan for this game, a fantastic idea (particularly love seeing the sales peaks which I'd never looked into myself)

40. Flume feat. Tove Lo ~ Say It
Flume briefly made the sales chart with 'Say It' thanks to the release of a Clean Bandit remix, although the original sold better in the long-term. It still remains his highest charting song to date as both it and 'Never Be Like You' were truly robbed of being hit singles despite R1 support.
Ah that's why! I always remember its international success for the massively long time it spent in the 50s on global Spotify, never managing to get across the line back when the top 50 effect was very significant: 101-100-101-121-121-71-58-55-56-53-55-52-52-52-54-55-55-55-56-55-56-57-57-58-60-64-64-67-82-134-155-193-196. Yep, the dramatic fall was when it was removed from Today's Top Hits (on which track 1 was, that day, "Barack Obama - Today's Top Hits Intro From The President"), killing it in pretty much every country except Australia & NZ. Coincidentally, that's right around when it got its week in the UK chart.

37. Ferreck Dawn & Redondo ~ Love Too Deep
Year charted: 2014
I totally forgot this was from 2014! I think it was one of those songs I heard of but never heard at the time, and when listening to it for this game, Spotify said it was from 2016 and I believed it.
QUOTE(danG @ Aug 5 2019, 01:14 AM) *
35. Just Us ~ Cloudbusting
30. Andy C & Fiora ~ Heartbeat Loud
29. Kiiara ~ Gold
Great to see these make the top 40 heart.gif

23. Antony & The Johnsons ~ Hope There's Someone
This song, which was also covered on Avicii's debut album 'True', was briefly brought back to the chart following a performance by The Voice contestants, having peaked at #44 upon its original release.
Thank you! I had no idea what this was doing having charted since 2014. Didn't know it charted originally either, I think I'd only heard of it from being one of Pitchfork's year-end #1s.
QUOTE(danG @ Aug 5 2019, 02:06 AM) *
22. Henry Krinkle ~ Stay
I always remember that, the one time #41 was worth playing, I missed it sad.gif
QUOTE(Rush @ Nov 10 2014, 02:01 AM) *
Finally an interesting #41 and I was too late laugh.gif But yay Henry Krinkle, such a great song.
Glad it finally made the top 40 in something cheer.gif

20. Martin Solveig feat. Sam White ~ ę +1 Ľ
Their bid to get votes paid off basil.gif
QUOTE(danG @ Aug 5 2019, 02:15 AM) *
17. CHVRCHES ~ Get Away
Serving as the comeback for CHVRCHES for their second era, streaming wasn't kind to them especially for the time (29-52 being one of the biggest drops for 2014). They finally got a proper hit this year however by collabing with Marshmello.
I think this was just for the 'Drive' soundtrack? Not the original one 'Nightcall' and 'A Real Hero' came from of course but some 2014 rework. Ouch at it charting 50+ spots higher than everything from their 2nd album though.
QUOTE(danG @ Aug 5 2019, 02:19 AM) *
Sigma still had hits in 2016 (Cry and Find Me), I think those are the last DnB hits (if Find Me even counts as DnB).
that Take That collab possibly being the last D&B top 40 hit is the most cursed statistic possible (oh coi already said basically the same thing laugh.gif)
QUOTE(danG @ Aug 5 2019, 02:34 AM) *
11. Vampire Weekend ~ This Life
Wow this almost making the top 10! ohmy.gif

...and I'm gonna slide into a new post because I maxed out the allowed number of quotes lmao

08. Carly Rae Jepsen ~ Run Away With Me
Now this not being near #1 is a surprise, maybe fatigue from winning everything?
QUOTE(danG @ Aug 5 2019, 02:48 AM) *
06. The Avener & Phoebe Killdeer ~ Fade Out Lines
!!!!!! I just, as I saw 'Run Away With Me', remembered 'Fade Out Lines' was still in the running and was shocked it was so high... and then realised it had probably missed out. Or not! ohmy.gif My +25, a true classic for me. I remember it and 'I'm An Albatraoz' feeling like big 'lost hits' in terms of the UK at the time, in that they were big in Europe (and even both made the top 10 in Australia!) but seemed to be going nowhere and getting little to no radio support in the UK ahead of their long-delayed releases. I recall 'Fade Out Lines' having a really chopped-up UK radio edit like 'Jubel' too. Though I completely forgot 'I'm An Albatraoz' actually did eventually reach #25 until checking just now.
QUOTE(danG @ Aug 5 2019, 02:48 AM) *
05. The 1975 ~ Somebody Else
It tends to feel like this underperforms in ROTD to me, so it's great to see it top 5 here heart.gif I think of it as their definitive/most popular song, whether or not that's actually the case (it does have their highest Spotify plays). My favourite of theirs, up there with 'Sex' and 'Give Yourself A Try'.
QUOTE(danG @ Aug 5 2019, 02:54 AM) *
03. The Chemical Brothers ~ Go
I did not see this being so high! ohmy.gif
QUOTE(danG @ Aug 5 2019, 02:59 AM) *
01. Duke Dumont ~ Ocean Drive
!! Wow, an excellent result - my 2nd favourite behind 'Fade Out Lines', and my favourite song of his. Right after making the ROTD AQ section too! 'Ocean Drive' is coming... for something. I love how its https://kworb.net/spotify/track/0k93MXOj0kSXo84SvSDeUz.html, particularly in eastern Europe I think (?) as well as Australia, turned it into possibly his biggest hit overall (it's his biggest on Spotify and YouTube, approaching 500 million views on the latter).
QUOTE(danG @ Aug 5 2019, 03:01 AM) *
41 91 Purple Disco Machine ~ Dished (Male Stripper)
43 88 John Gibbons & Franklin feat. Nina Nesbitt ~ A Spaceman Came Travelling
Poor them just missing the top 40, but I'm very glad to see 'A Spaceman Came Travelling' narrowly beat 'P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)'. Wouldn't have expected Kylie to miss the top 40! Particularly as I recall her leading in the poll stage did we get AF Idol-inspired single-artist voters?... and 'Side Effects' too for that matter. Also thought some of the older songs ('Changes', 'Tiny Dancer') would've done better since they seemed to do very well in the earlier rounds, not that I really mind because I felt like few of the old ones in the game were ones I cared for. I like how the list was curated well enough that every song got at least 40 points.

Thanks for running this, a very creative idea and I enjoyed reading the countdown.

PERFECT winner *.* also pleasantly surprised to see 'Go' and 'Dance To This' so high. On the contrary, I can't quite believe that Carly is only #8 with 'Run Away With Me' ohmy.gif if I had to name songs that are huge BuzzJack favourites then that'd be one of them. Wow, perhaps fatigue indeed as Rush suggested.

Thanks for this!

Even Ariana at her peak couldn't give Troye Sivan a hit with this surprisingly falling well short of the top 40, though in this contest it easily out-performs the rest of Ariana's entries.

But funnily Lauv could biggrin.gif

Seriously though Dance to This should've been big, but was never really pushed (from what I can remember). Didn't it come not long after Bloom - which was pushed more, but didn't do anything. Still it went top 10 on i-tunes... shame it was never pushed by radio/ on Spotify.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Aug 5 2019, 11:37 AM

Actually a very good Top 2! Buzzjack showing taste for once *.*

Disappointed at Viola Beach being so low down the rankings as it's a great song but I guess it was lucky to make the final.

Posted by: Uls2000 Aug 5 2019, 12:58 PM

Ended up with a fine top 3 there I think, especially surprised/happy for Chem Bros/Q-Tip to get so high

Thanks for running this DanG over the last few weeks!

'Ocean Drive' is a perfect winner, that missing out on a top 40 placing is really criminal, thankfully it did do better in other countries of course. I like 'Everything Now' too but it's far from Arcade Fire's best for me (I think it missed out on my votes in this?), the rest of that top 10 is excellent though, particularly pleased at how well The Chemical Brothers and FISHER did! I may have ended up forgetting to listen to the songs I'd not heard before voting in this kink.gif but I've actually coincidentally finally heard 'Dance To This' since then and I think retrospectively I'd probably have given that a few points, maybe enough to push it up to 6th. Good results for Vampire Weekend, Jamie xx, CHVRCHES and Henry Krinkle as well (I feel like the latter isn't as well remembered as it ought to be, the #41 peak still hurts). JUSTICE delivered with those two awful John Gibbons covers both missing the top 40 here, there's not too much outside the top 40 that I desperately wish had done better, 'Bang That' is the biggest standout but at least Disclosure did better with their other song which is also fab.

Thanks for this Dan, was fun xx
