BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Christmas No1 Album

Posted by: Steve201 3rd November 2017, 10:36 PM

With Ball & Boe returning to no1 with the follow up to last years Christmas no1 album it made me realise we are at the beginning of the Q4 gift buying season when album sales explode in comparison to the rest of the year and this week the whole top 5 nearly broke 20k copies - who will be the challengers for this years biggest selling Christmas release?

Posted by: Steve201 3rd November 2017, 10:45 PM

I've put Ed Sheeran - seems fitting ending as the year started and Perfect is only growing at radio/in the chart!

Posted by: Chapman 3rd November 2017, 10:50 PM

Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Ball and Boe will probably make up the top 3 with a Taylor and Pink definitely within the top 10. I think Sam may grab it

Posted by: cqmerqn 3rd November 2017, 11:05 PM

Little Mix

Posted by: gavindeejay 3rd November 2017, 11:07 PM

Good question. I’m honestly not sure.

I think Sam Smith looks the best option out of that list at the moment.

Posted by: Joe. 3rd November 2017, 11:35 PM

I agree possibly Little Mix if their promo / new single take off. Otherwise Ed Sheeran, I can see him doing Perfect on the XF finals.

Posted by: George.keh 3rd November 2017, 11:41 PM

As excited for it as I am I can’t see Sia doing much

Posted by: Jonjo 3rd November 2017, 11:43 PM

I went for "other" just coz I'm a Litle Mix stan. Butttt... in all honesty, I reckon it's between Ball/Boe and Roy Orbison tbh.

Posted by: timjimlee 4th November 2017, 12:29 AM

Tough call this year, went for Sam Smith but not overly confident, seems wide open

Posted by: SKOB 4th November 2017, 07:06 AM

Out of what I've heard, hopefully Gregory Porter

Paloma Faith could be on the list although it's released pretty early to make it.

Posted by: Steve201 4th November 2017, 07:51 AM

I didn't realise LM were releasing another new single for the repackage, maybe should have added them. Surprised so few believe Taylor Swift will do anything, she's clearly released to challenge!

Of course we don't know the Christmas specials that will enevitably be on the weekends after XF ends which always have a big effect and also wonder if these BBC specials with artists will continue to be on on Thursday nights?

Posted by: commonsense 4th November 2017, 09:30 AM

I'll take a stab at Roy Orbison.

Posted by: Steve201 4th November 2017, 10:17 AM

Who voted for Sir Peter Tong? I added them because the last one sold so well and it's released in December - could be a January sales No1!

Posted by: Supercell 4th November 2017, 11:50 AM

Hard to call really, Sam Smith will sell consistently well as he's had a far reach of appeal with his previous music. I reckon the top three will feature, Ed, Sam and Alife and Michael but could easily be any of them. X managed to have huge sales off the back of TOL but given that was his breakout appeal to a wider audience and was on the level of SOY success wise, I'm not sure if Perfect will manage the same impact.

I can't see Taylor really being a challenge if her singles/buzz songs are anything to go by but think she'll easily be top 10. She's never been that big in the UK for starters and LWYMMD hasn't exactly been a massive hit like SIO or BS were.

Posted by: Drpepper 4th November 2017, 11:56 AM

It feels like this year is going to have overall bigger Xmas period sales than last year. So it might be a bit more exciting. Which is good.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 4th November 2017, 12:16 PM

Id love it to be Roy Orbison but think it's between Boe and Ball and Sam smith.

Wouldn't that be in the compilations chart though?

I'd argue that breakthrough was 'The A Team' lol tongue.gif Of course 'Thinking Out Loud' was his biggest hit to that point but he had already been an absolutely massive name among all audiences for a long time before that.

I voted for THE THING in this poll but not so sure now as its first week sales are looking surprisingly lacklustre according to Minty.

Posted by: Scene 4th November 2017, 03:27 PM

Sam Smith. A lot of people will be unwrapping it on Christmas.

I assume it's the follow up to his album from last xmas which was no1 on the artist album chart!

Posted by: Steve201 20th November 2017, 08:06 PM

Anymore thoughts on this as things are developing!?

Posted by: cqmerqn 20th November 2017, 08:09 PM

Ed

Posted by: Steve201 20th November 2017, 08:27 PM

Would make sense with this being his biggest year - the XF promo will dictate how much higher he can go but with Perfect no1 in the radio chart it could be a big factor!

Posted by: lewistgreen 20th November 2017, 09:43 PM

I think Buble is in with a shout. 3 weeks Top 20 already and up to #13 so far it's only going to carry on climbing laugh.gif

Posted by: pippa 20th November 2017, 11:48 PM

Roy Orbison A Love So Beautiful.

Posted by: dj_tim_e 21st November 2017, 02:03 PM

Eminem?

Posted by: Supercell 21st November 2017, 04:58 PM

Yeah now theres a potential release from Eminem on the cards I reckon he could have a very good shout at taking the no.1. He'll have decent streaming figures should he allow for it to be on Spotify.

Any release date mooted yet?

Not that I'm aware of it seems to be a guarded secret still.

Due to its sales and age it generally sell around 30-35k xmas week which usually makes top 10, prob doubtful for no1 tho!

Posted by: commonsense 23rd November 2017, 05:12 PM

The way Sam Smith and Boe/Ball are holding up it will probably be one of them.

Posted by: Steve201 23rd November 2017, 06:30 PM

Yeh seems to be looking likely although it's still hard to say what promo will do for certain artists, I mean with the XF ending in the first week of December this year I assume we will have a few more xmas Sunday night specials for certain artists - Eds album could explode in sales with this and more people being in the shops for xmas!

Posted by: Brébino 23rd November 2017, 08:00 PM

I read on Reddit the other day that Eminem removed the reference to his new album in the description of 'Walk On Water' on his website which possibly indicates the song is no longer on the album and/or the album is being delayed. No guarantee at all it'll even be out this year.

Posted by: Hadji 28th November 2017, 10:20 PM

Eminem’s next album has an official release date of 15th December so I hope he gets the Xmas #1 album

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 28th November 2017, 10:20 PM

What's the source Hadji?

Here’s one https://www.google.co.uk/amp/amp.timeinc.net/nme/news/music/eminem-revival-album-release-date-2166174%3fsource=dam also if you type in Eminem revival 15 December on google, you’ll find a lot of other sources

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 28th November 2017, 10:31 PM

Thanks - Prob has a chance of big sales but suspect Ed or Ball/Boe or Sam could generate more sales in a week when the public are buying MOR stuff!

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 29th November 2017, 08:45 PM

Eminem added to the vote/poll - thanks to our wonderful chart mid Joseph 😜

Posted by: Jonjo 29th November 2017, 08:51 PM

Can you change my "other vote" to Eminem please.

Posted by: danVember 29th November 2017, 08:56 PM

Done.

Posted by: Bjork 29th November 2017, 08:59 PM

so eminem could easily be #1 the weeek before xmas, but I doubt he can make it 2 weeks

Surely the chart announced Fri. 22nd will be the Xmas chart though?

Posted by: Joe. 30th November 2017, 07:32 PM

I really think once they’ve done some promo and nearer to Christmas given it’ll be a big stocking filler, Little Mix will take it.

They’re selling 35k this week with a very low key release.

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 30th November 2017, 10:36 PM

But it has no radio airplay for a current single like Ed does!

Think Ed and Sam will battle it out. Would like a shock tho like Elvis or someone!!

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 4th December 2017, 10:10 PM

Everything up for grabs after this weeks mids, U2 likely won't now after poor opening sales but they still have the tv special on the 19th which may help but they might be on a low base even by then.

Clearly Ed & Sam looking likely favs now but there time for much to change!!

Posted by: Crazy Christmas 5th December 2017, 09:17 PM

Eminem releases 15th but will it debut strongly enough?

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 5th December 2017, 10:00 PM

What did his last album do? I know he's hada top 10 single from it and it's had decent airplay for it from radio 1 but can't see him doing more than 45-50k!

Posted by: ChRiMbO LeG PiPe 5th December 2017, 10:02 PM

Lol at Taylor on this list!

Sam Smith, with a chance of Ed spoiling his no.1

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 12th December 2017, 11:24 PM

Quite surprised only 14 voted for Ed!

Anyone who voted him, Sam and Alfie/Ball have a real chance! And only 1 vote for Pink.

Only one chart left!

Yes, Ed certainly looking favourite at this point. Looks like Buzzjack has underestimated him.

Interesting looking at previous Christmas #1 Albums there has never been one that only had a single week at the top. Eminem could potentially change that but doubt it now, suspect he will debut at #3 behind Ed and Sam. Both have good promotion at the weekend (Ed on Strictly and Sam on The Graham Norton Show) on the back of some Sales momentum as well.

Posted by: Michael Bubré 13th December 2017, 10:55 PM

I think it's more a case of us overestimating Sam Smith. I voted for Sam in this thinking he'd be selling over 100k for several weeks including Xmas but he's not even managed one week over 100k. I thought Ed or BallBoe would be just behind him. x

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 13th December 2017, 11:16 PM

Pink is probably overperformed out of them all!

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 19th December 2017, 01:07 AM

Looking good for Eminem so far - could be the first time in a while the no1 album comes for a release this late!

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 21st December 2017, 09:42 PM

This is really too close to call!!

Posted by: Hadji 22nd December 2017, 12:15 AM

I hope Eminem has increased his lead from Ed

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 22nd December 2017, 12:43 AM

Same here but Ed will likely get no1 next week and a few years after as his price goes down in the sales and his performances on Christmas TOTP and NYE performance on Jools which always has a big effect!!

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 23rd December 2017, 03:18 PM

Well done to the 6 who guessed Eminem - first time in a long while the xmas no1 album is one released xmas week itself!

Posted by: timjimlee 23rd December 2017, 04:02 PM

Could Eminem's Album be the first Christmas #1 Album in history to get only a single week at the top?

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 23rd December 2017, 04:49 PM

Without checking there must have been others? Although the Now albums must have dominated the 80s until the compilation chart was introduced - as I said there's rarely a big release like that that far into Q4!

No others have only spent 1 week https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UK_Albums_Chart_Christmas_number_ones

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 23rd December 2017, 06:01 PM

That's crazy it's the first - it'll be an interesting week with the sales starting but Eminem will no doubt price himself out of a second week!

Posted by: Crazy Christmas 23rd December 2017, 06:46 PM

Glad Eminem did it. Love the album but it does have fairly mixed reviews.

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 23rd December 2017, 07:46 PM

Haven't listened myself yet but will be a Post xmas purchase!
