Prompted by the discussion in the Ultimate Madonna Rate, which Madonna collaboration was the most wasted opportunity? In the rate results, we talked about what could have been between a Madonna and M.I.A. collaboration. On paper, it's easy to see what Madonna would have seen in M.I.A. - innovation, genre-blending, rebellion, attitude. Unfortunately, none of these things could be recognised in 'Give Me All Your Luvin'' and 'B-Day Song'. Madonna's made many a collaboration over the years, would you say this was the most wasted or are there other contenders? |

Oh gosh where to start!
M.I.A. is the big one (twice over!) for the horror they created on MDNA. I'm also not overly keen on Me Against The Music and considering it is arguably the two biggest female popstars together on a track, it really isn't the special song we deserved from them. |

I really like 'Me Against the Music' as a song but Madonna's verse seems like such an afterthought; you could keep it as a solo track and it would be pretty much the same. I suspect fans at the time would have wanted something a bit more poppy too - like, could you imagine Britney and Madonna going toe-to-toe on something like 'Toxic'?! Thankfully the video was a more equal collaboration, although I'd have liked to have seen Madonna doing a bit more dancing in the way Britney did during the pre-chorus.
Considering the names involved, 'Lovesong' with Prince should have been a lot more memorable instead of the finished result which just plods along. I'd imagine a collaboration being quite experimental and not exactly what could be described as a 'banger', so they got the tone of the song right, at least. |

Interesting question! I think I have to go with Prince on this one as it's just so difficult to see how two such talented people could only come up with Love Song. I don't hate it but it's easily one of the more skippable tracks on Like a Prayer and both acts were making substantially better and more challenging material on their own at the time - I'd have loved them to come up with something more akin to Gold (one of my favourite Prince tracks) and I could just so easily see a choir production working on it and it fitting in perfectly within that Madonna era.
Oh ha - snap Liam - I hadn't read that bit of your post before I posted this. |

Listening to 'Gold' now and something like that could have really worked! There is something very gospel about it and, as you say, that would have fitted so well alongside the music Madonna was making at the time. It's actually making me quite sad to think what could have been and knowing there's no way it can ever happen now (unless Madonna sang along his vocals on an old track or something).

It's the album closer that should have been instead of Act of Contrition!

It would have been such a moment! I wouldn't have minded 'Love Song' being left on the album too if we had that second collab in a similar vein to 'Gold'. It would have ticked the box of ending the album on an uplifting moment, as I assume 'Act of Contrition' was meant to do, as well as supplying us with what could only have become one of Madonna and Prince's essentials.

The fact I didn't even remember Madonna and Prince had a song together when typing my initial response shows how underwhelmed I am by it! But yes, another good shout. She hasn't really done collaborations with big names well throughout her career, has she?

Just one performance? Think of the wonders they could have created together in the studio. |

Madonna and MJ , he hated her ideas for in the closet. Dangerous is my favourite MJ album and I think the combining of his sound and Madonna's Erotica sound would have been a match made in heaven. It's a shame none of their work together materialised; it would have been terrific at the time but, like Prince, it would have meant even more now knowing they're no longer with us. I'd have liked a Madonna and Janet collaboration too but it seems they didn't like each other. |

Dangerous is my favourite MJ album also - but I have to say I'm fine with In The Closet exactly how it is! I don't much care for any of MJ's (vocal) collaborations really.
I usually think the best collaborations are when the two acts aren't of a similar preference, so vocalists with guitarists etc but it's rare that two vocalists/producers make anything anywhere near as good as the sum of its parts. |

Dangerous is also my favourite MJ album. I'm not sure I would have welcome a collab for them two - the calibre of their names alone would only lead to an underwhelming project I think! It would have to be the single best song ever or it'd be underwhelming
