JANUARY 2004 CHARTS

Back to the old monthly format for the 2000's as I'm getting behind as february approaches (the weekly charts take much longer to sort). Dance still rules, fairly obviously as Nelly Furtado's fab banjo dance continues at the top into the new year, with basement Jaxx and that amazing Lisa Kekaula vocal takes over at the end of the month. Simon & Garfunkel's 60's classic interrupts at the top, Paul Simon wrote it on a dull British railway station (points for naming it...) it certainly made me homesick for America - and I'd never been there (just grew up with it on TV).

Jay-Z, Kylie and R Kelly in the Top 10 (is this my 2014 chart!?), look at that Pink Floyd dance cover rocket up to 3 (Scissor Sisters debut hit) and new band Franz Ferdinand with a new classic rock hit - hooray! Rock is back! Highest new entry of the month is Sugababes at 11. Who'da thought it!? Quiz-time, the title is clearly wrong (I think) so what's the real title Sugababe fans?

No personal chit chat this time as it was a year of family tragedy and loss in Feb and May and it sort of wiped out a lot of stuff in my mind.

FEBRUARY CHARTS 2004

Still with the monthly format due to lack of time, and also a family suicide tragedy this month has left the charts all a bit odd to me, still, from the last week of the month onwards. I kept on with charts to keep my mind off stuff, but things were very emotional, and still are.

A quick review, Scissor Sisters become my band of that period, all retro and perfect on record and live, appropriately on top with their first single hit a la Pink Floyd. Katy Melua gently sings her way into the top 10, charming stuff. Kylie gets another Top 10 with one I've mostly forgotten, and Cathy Dennis' Toxic gives Britney another chart-topper, one of the best records of the decade, and possibly my fave dance track of the decade. Awesome!

The Offspring return to the 20, ditto Dido, and The Strokes belatedly get a Number One with a record fairly obscure and after the event for their big debut. I think it fitted my mind-set that week, angry and forlorn. Snow Patrol get a famous record into my Top 20, though not generlly a fan of theirs, fab Chrissie Hynde comes back with a dance track (Tube & Berger) and it's great, and Pet Shop Boys are Flamboyant at 23.

MARCH 2004 CHARTS

I was living through a traumatic funeral and aftermath this month, and my chart-toppers showed my mixed-up state of mind a bit: The Strokes brittle rock at 1, Tube & Berger dance with Chrissie Hynde (her first chart-topper since 1980!), and taking refuge in a Dusty classic, the epic 1968 single I Close My Eyes, her best record and emotions on the max setting.

Britney got knocked a bit by events, then recovered cos it's just soooo classic. Keane peak at 4 (and then came back in 2013 to top my chart), Starsailor are strong, Pet Shop Boys are Flamboyant, and George Michael Amazing. George was the last song played at my sister-in-laws funeral (Careless Whisper) cos she loved George.

The charts, it must be said, were a damn sight more varied than the 2014 charts are, genres galore, a sign of a healthy music scene

APRIL 2004

Well, 10 years ago, and what a gay gay gay Top 10. Dido gets her 2nd chart topper, Agnetha gets her first ever solo chart-topper to add to her zillions with Abba - and it's with a Cilla Black song! Who'da thunk it?! Both are, however, gorgeous.

Elswhere Enrique and Kelis, Scissor Sisters (gayyyy!), The Rasmus (not gay!) and oldies The Stranglers bounce back along with Linda Ronstadt all into the Top 10. In the UK charts it's that naughty, and in retrospect not that great, Eamon having 5 minutes of fame. Sadly, it was a line-crossed and now it's effing obligatory to get that effing word into every effing song in an effing attempt to sound cool cos effing 14-year-olds think it's effing daring. Cliched! (say it in a gay high-pitched voice, sweetie...)

May 2004

Another bad month this year as my grandad died suddenly on Bank Holiday Saturday night while I was in London. My parents had driven up to Mansfield to stay with grandma by the time I got home. I went up the following weekend and as I’d already booked a holiday for the middle of May, with a friend who wouldn’t have gone on his own, grandma told me to go rather then the funeral, and instead I went to the memorial service the week after. Didn’t stop me feeling bad though.

That’s why I was again opting for oldies in my charts again, Elton John’s non-UK hit from 1970, the soaring gospel gorgeous Border Song, and The Shadows best record, the lovely Wonderful Land instrumental, the oldest recording to top my chart to that date at 42 years. Finally, the Supremes 60’s classic You Keep Me Hangin’ On topped the chart at the end of the month for the second time (the 80’s was the last time) and their 4th re-issued topper (the Diana Ross line-up) or 5th (for the Mary Wilson line-up). Other oldies from Lou Read (remixed) and Abba (30th anniversary re-issue of Waterloo) join them in the top 10.

Current songs that unfairly got knocked further down the chart: The Rasmus, Sarah McLachlan, Anastacia (2 weeks at 3 with Left Outside Alone, and would otherwise have had a number one), Goldfrapp’s Strict Machine at 9, Usher’s Yeah (at 4), Maroon 5’s This Love at 8, Christina Milian’s Dip It Low with a 3-week run at 4, Jet’s fabulous Are You Gonna Be My Girl (peaked at 2, would have topped the chart), Scissor Sisters Laura (at 7). At least all the oldies kept Lostprophets out of my Top 40, with their least-bad record. They were consistently crap, and it turns out one of them was morally far worse than any of their records.

I loved Nelly's Powerless and Try. They really got my interested in her. It was a decent time for music with no clear direction, which I like. All the indie guitar bands were on the up - Bloc Party and The Killers in particular.

Hi Anthony, yes I agree, I thought the music scene in 2004 really picked up and the guitar band revival was an extra to add to pop and dance which had dominated for a few years, and I went mad on The Killers from their second hit really. I still think they are the top American band of the 21st Century so far. cool.gif

I lost interested in The Killers during their second album. Somebody Told Me is still my fave.

JUNE 2004

Number Ones this month: a Motown classic from The Supremes at long last tops my chart, I’d known it since I was a nought but a kiddie, and it’s a great record, still the definitive version. Then the danced-up version of Lou Reed’s Satellite Of Love gets to the top 30 years on since I first went a bit mad on the original (but which didn’t qualify to chart oddly). Finally, Will Young gets a chart-topper, his one and only, and it’s none of his famous ones, it’s the delicate Friday’s Child which did the trick. Subtle and lovely.

Bad news for Christina Milian who gets stuck at 3 for most of the month with the good Dip It Low, and Scissor Sisters Laura which peaks at 4. George Michael is Flawless at 8, 22 years into his career, and the very late uncharted great Nick Drake gets a top 20 Magic hit. Natashe Bedingfield gets another Top 10 Single, and Britney’s Number 1 follow-up, the sublime haunting Everything is at 5.

The Divine Comedy get yet another Top 10 hit (in my charts, at least) with their Absent Friends, and Helicopter Girl also flies up to 9 with Angel City. In at 4 from nowhere, though, it’s Polyphonic Spree and Hold Me Now, never as big as it deserved. One of the most unlikely duets? Nancy Sinatra and Morrissey, he even gave away a great song for her new fab album, Let Me Kiss You. The Streets Dry Your Eyes mate, at 14, and that song used in a recent jail parody amusing mini-movie (Drogostea Din Tei) yodels in at 16 just ahead of Bowie’s last material for a decade, Rebel Never gets Old, and sneaking in it’s Pharrell, Maybe, N.E.R.D.

JULY 2004

Britney gets her 4th and final Number One with the gorgeous Everytime, though Will Young’s gorgeous Friday’s Child pops back up again too before Anastacia’s Sick And Tired goes one higher than I’m Outta Love to give her a chart-topper. Hmmm. All gay icons on top.....

Kylie gets to 9 with some Chocolate, 16 years of hits, while Nancy & Morrissey go top 10 for 33 years and 21 years of hits each. That’s over half a century! But that’s not all, Nancy Sinatra is also back with Lee Hazelwood 33 years since their last new duet charted, with the whimsical Is making A Little Love Out Of The Question. Morrissey’s also back with his best single in a decade, First Of The Gang To Die at 26.

Shaznay Lewis, meanwhile, brings another Top 10 for ex-All Saints acts, and Shapeshifter’s excellent Lola’s Theme sits at 2.

John, which Divine Comedy had the highest position in your charts ?
"I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten" would be my vintage # 1 very soon. Didn't heard these Nancy Sinatra's duets.
Never was a fan of "Everytime". If my memory is good enough "The Show" was my # 1 ten years ago.

It's my first comment here. ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

Hi Alex,

thanks for the comment! cool.gif
National Express and Absent Friends both peaked at 9 for Divine Comedy, ahead of Generation Sex at 10, but National Express had a longer chart run than both cool.gif

The Show only peaked at 30 in mine, though it was good. I ADORE that Dusty record yahoo.gif

cheers!

AUGUST 2004

A Motown double-sided reissue campaign dominates my charts this month, knocking off Anastacia, who’s mighty Sick And Tired of it - but I don’t care, that BRILLIANT Isley Brothers pair of classics, This Old Heart Of Mine and Behind A Painted Smile get a 3rd chart run, from the 60’s, 1976 (when they hit the top together) and returning to Number 1 23 years later. Smile needs to be heard LOUD in a club, so exciting. Bung in 2 Four Tops classics at 3, Jimmy Ruffin at 8, Temptations at 15, Smokey Robinson at 25, Stevie Wonder 29, Edwin Starr at 12, Martha Reeves at 17, The Supremes at 3, and most of all, the Northern Soul double-pairing R. Dean Taylor classics There’s A Ghost In My House and Gotta See Jane, both returning to the top spot 30 years on, even though they were 60’s tracks and R. Dean was white, they hit the spot.

Yet more oldies, though, as the Big O gets an instant hits album number one, as the timeless It’s Over grabs 2 weeks on top 44 years late. If you ever want a break-up record to express how miserable you feel - play this loudly and cry along with it. Awesome! All these oldies, of course, mean contemporary records suffer much lower chart peaks, sadly, but there’s still plenty to mention:

Nancy Sinatra is back with Morrissey at 8, on his Let Me Kiss You, so good he released his own version after nancy unfairly didn’t get that comeback hit she deserved - this was her first new material to chart in an incredible 28 years. Morrissey, to double the unfairness of it all, would have had his first chart-topper with his best record in a decade, First Of The Gang To Die, first track off his terrif album, just as Nancy’s was off her terrif album. 4’s not bad, but what a pity, as he’s yet to top my chart. Nancy, meanwhile, is back with Lee Hazelwood on the album, and at 16 in my chart, cos he did all her classic records, bar one.

Natasha Bedingfield has These Words at 10, and shockingly Brian McFadden gets to 3 with the forgotten Real To Me, and that’s higher than any Westlife record. Dido’s Sand In My Shoes is ingrained (ouch!) at 5, it’s a great catchy pop track, while Maroon 5 meander in the 30’s. My advice is do a duet with Christina Aguilera! Straight in at 7, it’s the brilliant Jesus Walks, Kanye West at his best, and I’m shocked to see Kasabian at 45. Crikey is it really 10 years they’ve been having hits! Wow!

SEPTEMBER 2004

The 60’s oldies continue to dominate my chart, R Dean Taylor grabbing another 3 weeks on top, which leaves Morrissey peaking at 3 and denied a 3-week run on top, and Jojo, who declares “Leave (Get Out)” also at 3 as she is also denied a chart-topper for the same reason. Happily, Robbie Williams is a bit more assertive as he tunes his Radio in at 1, his 9th number one (or 11th including Take That) and a good pop romp.

Kanye West peaks at 4 with the record of the month, the one that really SHOULD have been a number one, while Duran Duran have a proper comeback (again) reaching up for the Sunrise at 6, 23 years on from Planet Earth. That’s nowt though, Brian Wilson, genius of the Beach Boys hits 5 with a new solo track Soul Searching, his first actual new Top 5 material err, ever, cos the Brian Wilson Beach Boys tracks pre-date my charts. Yikes!

I Monster get a top 10 entry with Hey Missus, always was partial to them, while The Killers get a proper hit with All These Things That I’ve Done, which reminded me a bit of Queen as I heard it on the radio passing through Bath at the time. 12 is under-rating, though, due to oldies, it really should be Top 3. Alison Krauss, the woman that convinced me country music had a heart again, bluegrasses her way to 7, ain’t she the Lucky One!

Rocketing to 18 it’s Jamie Scott. Just. Actually not just Jamie Scott, it’s the start of a pretty big career. Who he? The man behind future number 2 (in my charts) Annie You Save Me (as Graffiti6), and the man behind hits for Enrique (Heartbeat), Matt Cardle (Loving You), The Vamps (Wild Heart), and most of One Direction’s Midnight Memories album.

October 2004

More oldies chart-toppers of previously uncharted tracks, courtesy album-chart compilations: The Four Tops classic version of Walk Away Renee from 1967 featuring the voice of one of the greatest singers of all-time, Levi Stubbs just breaks my heart when he sings, and John Denver’s 1975 ode to undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau, Calypso, both terrific singles. That leaves only one 2004 track from Embrace, Gravity on top. Other biggies come from Jojo, I Monster, U2, Gwen Stefani, The Beautiful South covering ELO, Scissor Sisters and Girls Aloud, but most are overshadowed somewhat by the Motown double-A-side reissue campaign which continues to dominate the chart and pushes the new stuff down a few places lower than they ought to be.

NOVEMBER 2004

Gwen Stefani hit the top spot, going where No Doubt couldn’t quite, with the fabulous What You Waiting For. She just keeps Kylie off yet another chart-topper as her Scissor Sisters track I Believe In You settles for 2 before both tracks are shoved aside by my 1969 Number One anthem, the 3rd single I ever bought (in Singapore) Something In The Air by Thunderclap Newman. Once upon a time very famous, it needs another boost for new generations. Tyler James, friend of Amy Winehouse, gets a top 10 debut hit, as Jamie Scott (future One Direction hit songwriter) falls.

Hard to believe, but R Kelly is in the top 5 again, seems to be in there for Autumn every 5 years going back to 1994. Happy People, apparently. Kelis and Andre 3000 have a millionaire at 9, Morrissey does what he did for Nancy Sinatra, and takes Let Me Kiss You into the top 10, and Dannii Minogue gets one of her periodic dance hits, this time with Flower Power at 5 helping You Won’t Forget About Me peak. Scissor Sisters also pop back at 3 with an album track that’s better than almost all of the official singles, the gorgeous It Can’t Come Quickly Enough.
