Continuing with its tradition of releasing a new iPod every so often, Apple has now released the ever popular U2 Special Edition iPod (5th generation) to the masses. Personally, it would be much better to actually have the white, black and the U2 editions release at the same time, so for those of us who prefer not to wait months to get a new device have the option to do so as soon as they are released, but Apple seems to think otherwise. Besides, releasing a special edition U2 iPod now goes well with Jobs’ strategy of persuading people to purchase a new iPod (those who adore U2) every year.

As you can expect, the U2 Special Edition iPod is similar to its black and white standard editions in terms of features and specifications. Quite obviously, the only reason you would be purchasing the U2 edition would be to show admiration for the band. Or maybe it’s just because you like the color scheme.

The exterior of the device is jet black with vibrant red Apple Click Wheel and the bright display. We must admit the color scheme looks exceptional. On the backside, you will find autographs from all band members, a fairly standard offering from one U2 edition to another. Apple does sweeten the deal somewhat though. The U2 edition comes bundled with an exclusive Apple iTunes Music Store coupon which you can redeem for a 30-minute music video or band interviews.

Other than that, we haven’t noticed anything particularly interesting. Of course you will end up paying slightly more than the traditional video iPod due to obvious reasons, but if you like U2 and/or the color scheme in general, this may be the device for you.

Bono and Beckham in new Red Motorola Razr phone campaign -26/06/06

Bono is to be joined by David Beckham in a new ad campaign for Red Motorola phones.

The campaign will be a partnership with Bono's Project Red philanthropic organization, following the launch of the Motorola Red Slvr phone.

A portion of the sales of a bright red version of Motorola's Razr phone, available from such outlets as the Carphone Warehouse go to Project Red.

Bono will not actually be doing any ads for the phones but it's hoped the association will be powerful enough.

Motorola's recent flurry of celebrity deals started last month when it launched the special phone with Bono, who is front man for the Irish rock band U2. The phone, a blazing red version of Motorola's Slvr, is part of Bono's Product Red project.

Product Red is a brand. A portion of sales from products associated with it do to fight AIDS in the developing world. Motorola is the fifth company to join Product Red.

The Moto-Bono pairing isn't an endorsement deal; Bono isn't doing Motorola commercials. But it has the same effect: Tying Motorola's brand to one of the most celebrated pop artists.

U2 ranks fourth in Forbes magazine's "Celebrity 100" list of the world's richest and most powerful stars, and Bono's persona and activism is a major part of the reason.

David Beckham apparently also has an interest in the fight against AIDS, appearing in a UNICEF ad spotlighting the disease's harm to children.

Beckham apparently handed out the red phone to 550 A-list stars at a pre-World Cup party at his home in England.

As a brand ambassador, Beckham--one of the world's most photographed people--will regularly carry Motorola phones. He of course will appear in advertisements.

And exclusive Beckham "content"--screensavers and video clips of the man in action--is expected to embedded in some Motorola phones.

The Beckham deal is being rolled out in Asia and Europe during the World Cup. A key promotion: About 20 people who buy Motorola phones during the tournament will win a personal training session with Beckham in Madrid.

U2's Zoo TV Live From Sydney on DVD in September
June 27, 2006
DJRadiohead

It is finally going to happen! U2's Zoo TV tour is finally coming to DVD.

Most of the '90s were good to U2. This was the period of the band's history when they were cutting edge, when they were out in front of everyone. Sure, they had made great music before Achtung Baby but with that album and Zooropa U2 pushed boundaries. The two tours for those albums, Zoo TV and Popmart, are probably better on TV than they were in person. These shows were made for DVD before there was DVD. So why the blue hell did it take so long to get at least one of them released?

Zoo TV Live From Sydney has been digitially remastered and a disc of bonus features has been compiled for the DVD release (the concert was previously available on VHS).

This DVD package is long overdue. Too many of us discovered U2 too late and this is as close to experiencing the amazing spectacle that was Zoo TV as we are ever going to get (I have seen the VHS once). There was so much going on you could feel your brain sweating just to keep up with it. I suppose that was the point: information overload. The show was brilliant and the band was armed with one of — and then two — the best albums of their career. A brilliant stage concept, two great albums, and TV. What more could a fan want?

Chili Pepper blasts 'sell-outs' U2 and Black Eyed Peas

Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith has slammed U2 and The Black Eyed Peas for allowing their music to be used on television advertisements.

The Dani California star finds it difficult to understand how bands can sacrifice their integrity by selling their songs to corporations.

And Smith brands U2 and The Black Eyed Peas "idiots" for letting their respective tracks Vertigo and Hey Mama be used to promote the sale of iPods.

Smith, 44, says: "I'm fine with getting our music out to people but I don't want to be on a TV commercial with some guy bowling and then music comes out of his phone. There's no artistic credibility. I'd feel like a jerk if we did that.

"I think Black Eyed Peas look like a bunch of idiots. It's dangerous.

"The U2 song on the iPod when it came out was weird and it was longer and it had more parts.

"It's dangerous to tie yourself in with a product and also the visuals that go along with it.

"I think young people, not old guys like myself, think it's normal now to have Led Zeppelin on jeans commercials. Oh no! That's not normal to me."

Chilis drummer slams U2, Peas

In Scotland for the T in the Park festival, Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith lashes out at U2 and Black Eyed Peas for licensing their music to iPod commercials.

You won't be seeing a Chili Peppers iPod. As long as their drummer has a say in the matter, you won't be seeing the Red Hot Chili Peppers starring in the next iPod commercial.

In Scotland this weekend for the T in the Park festival, drummer Chad Smith told the Glasgow Daily Record that bands like U2 are treading in dangerous waters by licensing their music for things like iPod commercials. He also labeled the Black Eyed Peas "a bunch of idiots" for doing the same.

U2 licensed the song "Vertigo" for an iPod commercial last year and participated in a cobranding effort to create a U2-branded iPod, while the Peas licensed "Hey Mama" for an iPod ad.

Smith said that it's a compromise artists should never make.

"I'm fine with getting our music out to people but I don't want to be on a TV commercial with some guy bowling and then music comes out of his phone," Smith told the paper. "There's no artistic credibility. I'd feel like a jerk if we did that. But they're all lining up to do it."

"I think Black Eyed Peas look like a bunch of idiots," he continued. "It's dangerous. The U2 song on the iPod when it came out was weird and it was longer and it had more parts. It's dangerous to tie yourself in with a product and also the visuals that go along with it."

Smith, 44, admitted that the decline of traditional radio stations has forced bands to consider new ways to promote their music, but that commercials shouldn't be the way to do it.

"A lot of rock radio stations are gone so you have to find new avenues to get your music out there," he said. "You have to do phone commercials or something, but there have to be other ways to get your music out to people. There has to be a way to do it. A little ring tone thing is fine--it's like playing at half time at a car racing show.

"I think young people, not old guys like myself, think it's normal now to have Led Zeppelin on jeans commercials," he continued. "Oh, no! That's not normal to me."

The Chili Peppers continue to promote their 28-song double album, Stadium Arcadium, with a 27-date North American tour set to kick off August 11.

U2 ANNOUNCE REARRANGED TOUR DATES

Irish rockers U2 have rearranged their Vertigo tour dates in Australia, Hawaii, New Zealand and Japan which were cancelled in March (06) after a member of guitarist THE EDGE's family fell ill. The BEAUTIFUL DAY hitmakers will play eight shows in New Zealand and Australia in November (06), taking in Auckland, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, with superstar rapper KANYE WEST supporting. U2 will then fly to Japan to perform three concerts in Tokyo before playing their final show in Honolulu, Hawaii, on 9 December (06), where they will also be joined by grungers PEARL JAM. The band's manager PAUL MCGUINNESS says, "It's going to be a great night in Hawaii." The Vertigo tour took in North America, South America and Europe before it grinded to a halt after The Edge's daughter was reportedly diagnosed with leukaemia.

Rolling Stones Lead Mid-Year Tour Figures

July 21, 2006, 12:40 PM ET

Ray Waddell, Nashville
Touring is a global business and the Rolling Stones are, predictably, the top touring band in the world for the first half of 2006. Based on figures reported to Billboard Boxscore from Nov. 1, 2005, through mid-May, the Stones' Bigger Bang tour, produced by Michael Cohl, reported $147.3 million in grosses from 45 shows in U.S. arenas and international stadiums.

While it's doubtful U2 would have passed its elder brethren, the band, which is at second for the mid-year, would have improved its already hefty take of $73 million for the period had it not postponed dates because of a family illness. As reported today, those shows have been rescheduled for later this year.

Bon Jovi is the third-highest-grossing act for the period, reporting more than $65 million and 866,873 in attendance, selling out 54 of 57 shows. Rounding out the top 10 are Billy Joel ($47.4 million), Cirque du Soleil's Delirium ($38.7 million), Aerosmith ($35 million), Coldplay ($29 million), Luis Miguel ($25 million), Trans Siberian Orchestra ($24 million), and Paul McCartney ($17.6 million).

In general, the touring industry is maintaining a healthy pace. Gross dollars for January-June 2006 are up 24.6% from the same period last year, driven mostly by the tours cited above. High ticket prices help boost the increase, however, because attendance is up just 5.4%.
