4th September 2016

It’s Kadie Elder new at one, one of those rare events for my charts - a record new to me by an act new to me that is an instant Number One. It’s fab, and I’d hazard a guess that this Scandipop duo’s name was influenced by the John Wayne movie The Sons Of Katie Elder. I hope so, as in the cast was a boyhood crush of mine, Michael Anderson Junior, so that makes the subject matter a bit appropriate! That means Francis And The Lights and Bon Iver are held off at 2 in a very busy top 5, as rocketing up to 3 and into the 40 is RATBOY and his fab groove, Get Over It. Dua Lipa meanwhile gets a big climb to grab her 2nd top 5 and 2nd in the top 10 and she blows my mind - mwah!

Jesse & Joy take tuneful country ballads into the top 20 with a big leap to 13, and BETSY at 20 takes fab pop dance up there too. To say my top 40 is overcrowded is an understatement, records dropping which should be climbing due to the onrush. Rag’N’Bone Man climbs his bluesy Human into the 40, as does cool veteran Petula Clark, and classy Dominique. New entries lower down include a 60’s golden minor oldie, That’s Nice from the late English one-hit wonder Neil Christian, a very 60’s jolly track that I didn’t know I knew till I heard it the other week, nor did I know Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple fame played on it. It’s one I enjoyed as a kid without it registering in my consciousness as a named pop star or song title, cos it’s very familiar to me even after a few decades!

That leaves returns for DNCE, Jack Savoretti, John Newman, and most of the all-star cast of Sucker For Pain (Suicide Squad track number 3 in the chart), Barry Gibb back with his first solo entry in 30 years, and now the official longest run of chart hits (The Bee Gees were in my first-ever chart) at 48 years. In the same chart at 1 were The Beatles, who are also back with a live version of Twist & Shout. No band has ever been screamed at by girls ever. It’s a good version for getting the flavour of it, even though the track has already topped my chart when it belatedly entered the UK charts on download - the EP would have charted had EP’s been allowed in 1963. That leaves Bob Marley & Coldplay returning to my chart with previously charted tracks.

Phew!

Hi there John hi.gif

Ooh I spy your new BJSC entry there at number 1 ohmy.gif You're in my semi and I will be listening to it later so I shall be able to form an opinion on that soon!

Lots of good new entries here! First of all I spy The Beatles! I'm looking forward to hearing the new remastered Hollywood Bowl album and 'Twist And Shout' is a classic heart.gif Will you be seeing the coinciding Eight Days A Week film that's in cinemas just on Sept 15th? That happens to be my dad's birthday so I'm trying to persuade him to go laugh.gif

New Coldplay is pretty good! It hasn't hit me quite as hard as the first few singles but I have only heard it a couple of times so far. I am enjoying 'Sucker For Pain' at the moment, it's really intense which is a great thing. Finally, 'R.P.M.' is quite good and I am not usually a fan of country! Fabulous stuff.

Hi Jason,

yes, it doesnt happen very often a track enters at 1 for an unknown - just so catchy! cool.gif

I hope Ratboy breaks big, he's getting rave live reviews in NME, though he isn;t anything in the style of anything that makes the singles charts these days - more likely an albums act I guess.

Dua Lipa needs to break huge next year when the album hits. I insist! laugh.gif

cheers!

Hi Pete, thanks!

Ratboy and Dua Lipa wub.gif

Jack Savoretti needs a hit single, and this one could be the one, it's more dancepop than his usual singles - though the chances of anyone getting a UK top 40 single these days are pretty remote unless theyve already guested on a big name act first sad.gif

cheers!

Hi Jade hi.gif backatacha laugh.gif

Yes I'm hoping this BJ entry gets through to the final smile.gif

Good luck getting to see the Ron Howard film! I suspect I might run out of time as I will bizarre coincidentally be in Liverpool taking a mate's mum back home on Thursday and intend to reacquaint myself with my 60's Scouse Beatles childhood (for one year 1966) doing the Beatles tour and visiting Stanley Park on Friday before driving to Wimbledon. If so I'll get the DVD (I already have the vinyl LP from the 70's).

That Coldplay track sneaked to 40-something in my charts before xmas, so it's pretty much an oldie for me now, though not as immediate as the first singles laugh.gif I really enjoyed Suicide Squad and the music soundtrack fit very well, though the long list of artists on one track must be a record for a non-charity single! RPM is one I've picked up on a bit late, it got overshadowed in the last BJSC, sounds great loud in the car cheer.gif

cheers!
