Chart Commentary

Note: this is the final chart that contributes to my 2017 EOY! Any further charts this year will count towards 2018's EOY (for logistical reasons). Stay tuned for my 2017 countdown, starting over the next week!

#1 for the fifth consecutive week, Rita Ora's Anywhere has become the longest running #1 in two and a half years. The last time a song spent longer, consecutively, at #1 is Conrad Sewell's Hold Me Up, which spent six weeks at the top in mid 2015. Hold Me Up also holds the record for most consecutive weeks at #1, meaning Anywhere is just one week off tying the record (the overall record belongs to Girls Aloud's Something New, which spent eight weeks at #1 over three stints at the top). Anywhere is the longest running #1 overall since Frans' If I Were Sorry, which spent five weeks at #1 over two stints in early 2016.

Also in this week's chart, the Christmas impact begins earlier than it normally does, as Mariah Carey's seasonal classic All I Want For Christmas Is You re-enters at #28 (interesingly, the same spot it re-entered at last year). This is its fifth entry, extending its record for most stints in my top 40, with 17 weeks spread between the five stints.

French popstar Nemo Schiffman enters at #29 with Will, giving him a second hit just under a year after his #1 hit I Don't Mind debuted (at #2, it climbed to #1 in its second week). Interestingly, Will was actually released before I Don't Mind, but is making some late waves on my chart now that I've downloaded it (Nemo's songs weren't available on iTunes outside of France until recently).

On the album chart, Paloma Faith narrowly scores a #1 album with The Architect, almost mirroring the UK chart funnily enough. Both Paloma and Taylor were battling for #1 all week but Paloma inched ahead in the end, and has scored her third #1 album, following Fall to Grace and A Perfect Contradiction.

She scored her first #1 just last month, and now American popstar Maggie Lindemann is already back to claim another hit as her new single Obsessed debuts at #3. Maggie's first hit was her breakthrough smash Pretty Girl, which charted with help from both the original version and the Cheat Codes and Cade remix. It peaked at #2, and despite an erratic chart run, it's ended up as one of the defining hits of my chart this year. She scored her second hit alongside The Vamps on their #1 hit Personal, and now Obsessed gives her a third top 3 hit on the trot.

Maggie Lindemann
2017 02 Pretty Girl | 1 | 13-2-6-12-22-31-X-36-38-36-X (9 non-consecutive weeks)
2017 01 Personal (The Vamps feat. Maggie Lindemann) | FEAT | 1-2-4-6-9-11-... (6+ weeks)
2017 03 Obsessed | 2 | 3-... (1+ weeks)

Soaring up eight spots to the top 5, RAYE scores her second top 10 hit and her first as a lead artist. Decline debuted two weeks ago at #17, and instantly surpassed the #40 peak of previous single The Line. At the time, however, it lagged behind her Jax Jones collaboration You Don't Know Me, which peaked at #8 earlier this year. Now, Decline has overtaken You Don't Know Me and given RAYE a new personal best. Decline features Mr Eazi, who scores his first top 10 hit with his very first chart hit.

RAYE
2016 36 By Your Side (Jonas Blue feat. RAYE) | FEAT | 36-40-X (2 weeks)
2017 08 You Don't Know Me (Jax Jones feat. RAYE) | FEAT | 18-9-8-12-25-38-X (6 weeks)
2017 40 The Line | 1 | 40-X (1 week)
2017 04 Decline (RAYE & Mr Eazi) | 2 | 17-12-4-... (3+ weeks)

Mr Eazi
2017 04 Decline (RAYE & Mr Eazi) | FEAT | 17-12-4-... (3+ weeks)

He's one of the defining stars of the year thanks to global breakthrough hit Despacito, but all eyes were on Luis Fonsi to see if he could deliver a follow-up just as good. Interestingly, Échame La Culpa has actually outpeaked Despacito already in my chart, as it debuts at #7, six spots ahead of slow-burning Despacito's peak. Échame La Culpa is a collaboration with Demi Lovato, who scores her fourth top 10 hit of the year, and twelfth overall.

Luis Fonsi
2017 13 Despacito (Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber) | 1 | 30-13-20-30-39-X (5 weeks)
2017 07 Échame La Culpa (Luis Fonsi & Demi Lovato) | 1 | 7-... (1+ weeks)

Demi Lovato
2012 06 Skyscraper | 1 | 6-8-16-X-38-23-33-X (6 non-consecutive weeks)
2013 04 Heart Attack | 1 | 4-5-6-11-18-20-29-34-36-31-31-38-X-39-X (13 non-consecutive weeks)
2013 18 Neon Lights | 3 | 18-24-31-34-X-25-32-37-X-32-X (8 non-consecutive weeks)
2013 24 Really Don't Care (feat. Cher Lloyd) | 4 | 35-X-24-40-X (3 non-consecutive weeks)
2013 27 Something That We're Not | AT | 27-X (1 week)
2013 24 Made In The USA | 2 | 24-36-X (2 weeks)
2014 01 Somebody To You (The Vamps feat. Demi Lovato) | FEAT | 39-X-5-3-3-1-2-4-6-5-6-7-10-11-14-17-23-26-30-32-36-39-X-36-X (22 non-consecutive weeks)
2014 05 Up (Olly Murs feat. Demi Lovato) | FEAT | 5-8-10-15-26-31-X (6 weeks)
2015 02 Cool for the Summer | 1 | 2-3-9-11-17-18-27-24-28-31-34-39-X (12 weeks)
2015 08 Confident | 2 | 8-13-20-22-27-39-X (6 weeks)
2015 05 Kingdom Come (feat. Iggy Azalea) | AT | 14-5-11-25-34-X (5 weeks)
2016 05 Body Say | 1 | 27-5-7-15-20-27-32-X (7 weeks)
2017 01 No Promises (Cheat Codes feat. Demi Lovato) | FEAT | 1-2-2-4-7-10-13-17-24-23-27-22-27-33-40-X (15 weeks)
2017 02 Instruction (Jax Jones feat. Demi Lovato & Stefflon Don) | FEAT | 2-4-8-17-22-28-33-33-35-36-37-X-38-X (12 non-consecutive weeks)
2017 02 Sorry Not Sorry | 1 | 2-4-6-10-8-10-18-22-24-30-37-X (11 weeks)
2017 32 Tell Me You Love Me | 2 | 36-X-32-35-... (3+ non-consecutive weeks)
2017 40 Sexy Dirty Love | AT | 40-X (1 week)
2017 07 Échame La Culpa (Luis Fonsi & Demi Lovato) | FEAT | 7-... (1+ weeks)

The fourth and final new track in this week's top 10 comes from a trio of artists, two of whom score their first top 10 hit this week. Alan Walker is the primary artist, a British-born Norwegian producer and DJ. He scored his first chart hit in 2016 with Faded, which made #20, but aside from a minor featured hit with Sofia Carson, he hasn't charted since. Vocals come from Noah Cyrus, Miley's sister, who hasn't made my chart before this track, and additional production comes from Digital Farm Animals, who actually chalks up his third top 10 hit, following #9 hit Millionaire, and #1 hit Back to You with Louis Tomlinson from this summer. The track is All Falls Down, which jumps 10 places into this week's top 10 at #8 - good enough for it to claim the title of highest climber.

Alan Walker
2016 20 Faded | NAS | 24-20-28-39-X (4 weeks)
2017 37 Back to Beautiful (Sofia Carson feat. Alan Walker) | FEAT | 39-37-X (2 weeks)

liking maggie, paloma, guetta, and pink new entries...
not keen on the fonsi/lovato track tho...
