Chart Commentary

After being away for a while, British singer/songwriter George Ezra finally made his return last Friday (16th June). Don't Matter Now is the first single from his upcoming second album, and it's made a huge impression in my chart, becoming not just his first #1, but his first top 10 full stop! Previously, George made it as high as #15 with Blame It On Me, and also scored a top 20 hit with Budapest not long before.

George Ezra
2014 17 Budapest | 1 | 34-19-18-17-23-33-X (6 weeks)
2014 15 Blame It On Me | 2 | 29-30-27-24-18-15-19-25-20-23-27-37-X (12 weeks)
2014 40 Listen to the Man | 3 | 40-X (1 week)
2017 01 Don't Matter Now | 1 | 1-... (1+ weeks)

Just missing out on a #1 debut is the new single from Jax Jones. Previously, Jax's personal best was the #8 peak scored by You Don't Know Me, which features RAYE, from earlier this year. Instruction immediately betters that, entering at #2 this week. It features Stefflon Don, who scores her first hit, and Demi Lovato, who is more of a chart veteran. Demi has two #1s, both as a feature on singles by The Vamps and Cheat Codes. Her solo peak is #2, with 2015's Cool for the Summer.

Jax Jones
2014 22 I Got U (Duke Dumont feat. Jax Jones) | FEAT | 22-34-X (2 weeks)
2017 08 You Don't Know Me (feat. RAYE) | NAS | 18-9-8-12-25-38-X (6 weeks)
2017 02 Instruction (feat. Demi Lovato & Stefflon Don) | NAS | 2-... (1+ weeks)

Demi Lovato
2012 06 Skyscraper | 1 | 6-8-16-X-38-23-33-X (6 non-consecutive weeks)
2013 04 Heart Attack | 1 | 4-5-6-11-18-20-29-34-36-31-31-38-X-39-X (13 non-consecutive weeks)
2013 18 Neon Lights | 3 | 18-24-31-34-X-25-32-37-X-32-X (8 non-consecutive weeks)
2013 24 Really Don't Care (feat. Cher Lloyd) | 4 | 35-X-24-40-X (3 non-consecutive weeks)
2013 27 Something That We're Not | AT | 27-X (1 week)
2013 24 Made In The USA | 2 | 24-36-X (2 weeks)
2014 01 Somebody To You (The Vamps feat. Demi Lovato) | FEAT | 39-X-5-3-3-1-2-4-6-5-6-7-10-11-14-17-23-26-30-32-36-39-X-36-X (22 non-consecutive weeks)
2014 05 Up (Olly Murs feat. Demi Lovato) | FEAT | 5-8-10-15-26-31-X (6 weeks)
2015 02 Cool for the Summer | 1 | 2-3-9-11-17-18-27-24-28-31-34-39-X (12 weeks)
2015 08 Confident | 2 | 8-13-20-22-27-39-X (6 weeks)
2015 05 Kingdom Come (feat. Iggy Azalea) | AT | 14-5-11-25-34-X (5 weeks)
2016 05 Body Say | 1 | 27-5-7-15-20-27-32-X (7 weeks)
2017 01 No Promises (Cheat Codes feat. Demi Lovato) | FEAT | 1-2-2-4-7-10-13-17-24-23-27-22-27-... (13+ weeks)
2017 02 Instruction (Jax Jones feat. Demi Lovato & Stefflon Don) | FEAT | 2-... (1+ weeks)

Stefflon Don
2017 02 Instruction (Jax Jones feat. Demi Lovato & Stefflon Don) | FEAT | 2-... (1+ weeks)

He scored his first chart hit earlier in the year, with #4 hit Unstable, and now Zak Abel has scored another top 5 hit with the follow-up single. All I Ever Do (Is Say Goodbye) is the second single from his long-awaited debut studio album (which has been subject to constant pushbacks in terms of release date) Only When We're Naked, and it's currently scheduled for an October release.

Zak Abel
2017 04 Unstable | 1 | 10-4-9-10-14-19-26-31-37-X (9 weeks)
2017 05 All I Ever Do (Is Say Goodbye) | 2 | 5-... (1+ weeks)

American singer/songwriter Alec Benjamin scored a top 20 hit last year with End of the Summer, a song I said should climb and be a top 10 hit but ultimately it fizzed out quickly and only spent three weeks in the top 40. He uploaded a new song to Soundcloud last year, entitled I Built a Friend, and it managed to make #34 in my chart. A few weeks ago, I Built a Friend got a full release onto iTunes and Spotify, with updated production, and this week, it jumps 10 places to give Alec his first top 10 hit, about a year after his first hit failed to make it!

Alec Benjamin
2016 16 End of the Summer | 1 | 16-23-37-X (3 weeks)
2016 08 I Built a Friend | 2 | 34-X-40-18-8-... (4+ non-consecutive weeks)

Further down the chart, we have new personal bests for Citizen Four and Stormzy, plus chart debuts for R. City and Abi Hudson. R. City scored a UK #2 hit in 2015 with Locked Away but have failed to make my top 40 at any point, only making it in this week alongside Daniel Skye on his new single Feelin' You, the follow-up to two-week #1 hit ON from earlier this year.

Over in the album chart, we have a brand new #1 from Lorde with her second album Melodrama. Lorde's debut album Pure Heroine made it to the rather harsh position of #15 (ie. just scraping in), but this allows for an interesting statistic, because Lorde is the only person who scored a #15 album and managed to follow it up with a #1, quite an improvement! Harry Styles jumps two places back up to #2, boosted by the fact I got a ticket for his concert and am already feeling very hyped!

Oh my!!! How much money did Harry pay you to rig your chart this week? ohmy.gif

Interesting that Sabrina Carpenter has a song called Thumbs and now a song called Hands. Perhaps next will be one called Arms, featuring Jason Derulo of course? thinking.gif jameela.jpg

Hey Joseph!

1. George Ezra - Don't Matter Now - 1- ** HIGHEST NEW ENTRY ** For a minute I did a double take and thought I was replying to Harry's chart laugh.gif it's a decent comeback single from him, and though it's had a slower start than I'd anticipated, I'd like to think it can become a slow burning hit for him.
2. Jax Jones feat. Demi Lovato & Stefflon Don - Instruction - 2- Love this! Just the kind of dance banger I was hoping for to inject some much needed energy into the chart amongst all the lazy generic dance dance.gif
3. Ariana Grande - One Last Time - 34-24-14-13-18-32-38-X-19-34-40-X-10-14-1-1-3- As great as the cause, I still can't get over her awful diction on this - the way she sings "One last tiiiime" will forever annoy me unsure.gif
4. Martin Garrix & Troye Sivan - There For You - 20-1-2-2-4-
5. Zak Abel - All I Ever Do (Is Say Goodbye) - 5- This isn't quite as good as 'Unstable' but I'm still quite impressed with it. It's not going to be his breakthrough hit but hopefully Radio 1 will continue to support him.
7. Julia Michaels - Uh Huh - 3-4-7-
10. Katy Perry feat. Nicki Minaj - Swish Swish - 2-3-5-7-10-
11. Mike Perry, The Vamps & Sabrina Carpenter - Hands - 25-1-2-4-8-11-
12. Miley Cyrus - Malibu - 14-25-30-20-6-12-
13. Jonas Blue feat. William Singe - Mama - 5-6-14-12-11-11-13-
15. Niall Horan - Slow Hands - 27-38-34-28-12-9-15-
16. Little Mix feat. Stormzy - Power - 19-30-28-16- ** HIGHEST CLIMBER **
17. David Guetta feat. Justin Bieber - 2U - 10-17-
19. Harry Styles - Sign of the Times - 1-1-1-4-3-3-5-12-13-18-20-19-
21. Camila Cabello - Crying in the Club - 4-6-9-14-21-
24. Rita Ora - Your Song - 7-10-16-24-
27. Cheat Codes feat. Demi Lovato - No Promises - 1-2-2-4-7-10-13-17-24-23-27-22-27- ** LONGEST RUNNER **
28. Bebe Rexha feat. Lil Wayne - The Way I Are (Dance With Somebody) - 2-7-10-16-21-28-
30. Carly Rae Jepsen - Cut to the Feeling - 31-25-24-30- Shame this isn't continuing to climb, I'm loving this so much right now wub.gif
31. Shawn Mendes - There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back - 7-2-4-8-11-22-20-23-30-31-
33. Calvin Harris feat. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry & Big Sean - Feels - 33- Easily the best thing he's done in his chilled out era. Perfect for the summer!
35. Martine McCutcheon - Say I'm Not Alone - 31-35-
36. Sigala & Ella Eyre - Came Here For Love - 37-36-
38. The Vamps & Martin Jensen - Middle of the Night - 12-1-2-4-13-18-24-32-38-
40. Liam Payne feat. Quavo - Strip That Down - 18-32-X-40- Can't believe this has fared so badly on your chart ohmy.gif

Great stuff as always!
