Chart Commentary

In an unexpected turn of events, this week's chart is dominated by British singer/songwriter Kate Nash, who released her fourth album Yesterday Was Forever last week. The album is her first in five years, although she's released a few singles in the interim. It debuts at #1 very comfortably on the album chart, following Girl Talk to become her second #1 album (although of course, her first two albums would've been absolutely HUGE if my chart existed back then!). More interestingly though, Kate does the double and claims her very first #1 single with album track Karaoke Kiss, sonically inspired by songs like Taylor Swift's Style and lyrically is reminiscent of songs like Robyn's Dancing On My Own. Once again, it's worth noting that she would have achieved numerous #1 singles back in her first two eras, but from 2011 onwards, her previous best was the #7 peak of Good Summer in 2016. She also sees current single Life in Pink enter at #20, and previous single My Little Alien re-enters at #23.

2012 14 Skeleton Song | AT | 14-x (1 week)

Returning to the top 10 for the first time in over a year, Daniel Skye nabs a sixth top 10 hit with new single Say It. Starting with his debut hit We Got Us, which reached #9 in 2016, Daniel achieved a run of four consecutive top 10s that year thanks to a number of singles released in quick succession of each other. Last Call, which made #25, ruined the run, but he bounced back with ON, a two-week #1 at the start of 2017. Strangely though, both follow-ups got no higher than #29 and he's not had a notable hit since ON. Say It changes things and is immediately his second highest charting track. Strangely though, despite such a high number of releases for a new artist, and the fact he's on a major label, there's been absolutely no indicator of an album or even an EP. Say It is a collaboration with YouTuber Baby Ariel (who he's rumoured to be dating), who achieves her first hit.

Last week's "one to watch", Zak Abel ends up as the third highest new entry of the week. Usually my "one to watch" is a good prediction of my highest new entry the following week but I was off the boil last week...! Nevertheless, it becomes his fourth top 10 hit, ensuring his 100% top 10 record is kept with all of his charting tracks. Zak made his first chart appearance just over a year ago with Unstable, the lead single from his much-delayed debut album Only When We're Naked. It peaked at #4, which remains his highest position, tied by Still Want UUU at the end of the year. In the middle, All I Ever Do (Is Say Goodbye) peaked at #5.

Zak Abel
2017 04 Unstable | 1 | 10-4-9-10-14-19-26-31-37-x (9 weeks)
2017 05 All I Ever Do (Is Say Goodbye) | 2 | 5-10-17-30-x-21-x (5 non-consecutive weeks)
2017 04 Still Want UUU | 3 | 28-13-6-4-7-6-11-18-23-30-x (10 weeks)
2018 06 Love Song | 1 | 6-... (1+ weeks)

The final new entry in this week's top 10 is another unexpected one. The Voice USA winner and country singer Cassadee Pope notched up a couple of top 10 hits in my chart, but her last came in 2015 when I Am Invincible peaked at #8 and had a swift exit from the chart. Since then, I've not heard any of Cassadee's material (not on purpose!) until new single Take You Home's release. It returns her to the top 10 at last, sneaking in at #10.

Cassadee Pope
2013 15 Wasting All These Tears | 1 | 33-16-22-34-x-15-20-28-39-x (8 non-consecutive weeks)
2013 05 Easier To Lie | AT | 5-8-14-17-22-37-x (6 weeks)
2015 08 I Am Invincible | NAS | 8-22-40-x (3 weeks)
2018 10 Take You Home | 1 | 10-... (1+ weeks)

In the album chart, we see an unusually busy week after a VERY stale start to 2018. Three new albums debut in the top 5. As well as the aforementioned Kate Nash album at #1, Kacey Musgraves claims her highest peaking album to date with Golden Hour, which enters at #2. Interestingly, her debut Same Trailer Different Park made #4, and follow-up Pageant Material made #3, so there's a neat progression there. Hayley Kiyoko's debut release Expectations is new at #5, and Madison Beer's EP As She Pleases is at #10. Additionally, Declan McKenna's behemoth of a debut album rebounds up to #4 after I saw him live on Thursday night - more on that (and my encounters with three Eurovision 2018 stars on the same day) next week after a full week of impacting!

Elsewhere this week, we see chart debuts for Kodaline and Noah Kahan, while Ne-Yo makes his first chart appearance in three years (and his highest in almost six!). PRETTYMUCH are on their way to a fifth top 10 hit too, as Healthy jumps 20 places to #13 after a slow start.
