With just a week to go until the 20th Anniversary Edition of Sound of the underground is released where do you think it will debut in the chart?

I’m going Top 30 but like high up, I think it’ll sell like 3k/4k which might be enough for Top 20 sometimes but think it could just miss out. I don’t really have any expectations for it chartwise, I just hope it’s enough for the record company to have faith in vinyl releases for the other albums (and all the other albums have a lot more fan fair from the fanbase so would presumably do better).

Im not fully ruling out top 10 but i think comfortable top 20 should be safe and i agree i hope its a stepping stone to their other album getting a vinyl release.

I'm thinking somewhere 21-30. I hope that's pessimistic of me!

I hope its pessimistic aswell, it is hard to call though and it could also depend on how its marketed, will much effort go into social media to plug it.

I'm gonna be a little optimistic and say top 20!

4k should get them top 20, will the album get allocated streaming points from the singles or do they all go to the greatest hits?

They'll contribute to Sound of the Underground as well, it's just that the top two tracks will be downweighted to the average of the other songs... so Sound of the Underground/Jump will be the downweighted ones.

I mean, Louise only just missed the top ten with her greatest hits, if this can’t make top 20 it’ll be a disaster all round and you can kiss goodbye to any other vinyl pressings!

I really don't think the situation would be that dire!

These are back catalogue releases from an inactive group. I just can't imagine that the label has really high expectations. There's only 3 physical formats too - all 3 are quite expensive - so they've not exactly gone all out with formats to make the album sell by the bucketloads to casuals. It's very "fan service".

In its week of release, Spice Girls - Spice 25 sold 4,563 vinyls across 6 versions (+ previously available vinyl). That re-release had a far greater promotional push than Sound of the Underground has had. Girls Aloud have two vinyl formats... and their album is clearly not on the level of Spice, in terms of commercial success/general impact. I think if they even sold half of that 4,563 figure (which is 2,282) that would be very reasonable. CDs.... well, Spice 25 only sold 1,464 copies on CD. It was quite a bit more expensive than Sound of the Underground, but again, is there going to be a bigger market of CD buyers for Sound of the Underground than there was for Spice? Well let's be generous and predict it sells the same - 1,464. Also I don't see it doing much than ~200 sales of downloads and streaming combined. Overall that would see them selling a bit under 4,000 which isn't enough for Top 20. So to be comfortably Top 20 they owuld probably need to have 2,000+ CDs, 3,000+ Vinyl. Maybe they'll do more than that and I would be very pleasantly surprised.

Wherever Sound of the Underground charts, I have faith that the label will continue with the project. It's money for old rope - the label stands to make tens of thousands of pounds out of 3 formats of old music. Their intention to press the other albums was already stated in the press release for Sound of the Underground, which could suggest that work has already begun on them!

Maybe The Vamps' debut album release on vinyl this week can give us some idea of what to anticipate?

It's only the one format - a blue vinyl, with a signed print from their artist store. In Sunday's midweeks it was #24 and had sold 921 copies, 885 were the vinyl, as well as 3 downloads and 33 streaming. In Monday's midweeks it was down to #46 (so hardly any sales on Sunday).

Girls Aloud will have two vinyl and one CD. Initially it had an unsigned print as an incentive on their artist store, but that was limited. Otherwise there's bundles with clothing.

I would have always expected them to do much better than the Vamps for some reason, i know the Vamps have a loyal fanbase but i think Girls Aloud may just have a bigger loyal fanbase. But sing the Vamps as an indicator Girls Aloud i think should easily double their sales having 2 vinyl formats and the cd.

Part of me thinks it may sneak top 10 for some reason but i dont have my hopes too high in that regard but i do feel top 20 is very safe

Really interested to see how this will do and I’m sure pre-orders have been strong but it’s not going to appeal to anyone as an impulse buy - the iTunes download is £15.99 *.*

Streaming as we now see is as expected very low but more vinyls have to be dispatched, i think the mids today now make me think top 30 will be the highest.

Yesterday's breakdown:

#14 - 2,778 (+216 sales since the previous update)
Vinyl: 1,723
CDs: 964
Downloads: 54
Streaming: 37

The current projection is #30 with 3,438 sales. However I think it could end up lower than that, if yesterday's update was skewed by late dispatches. #40 is on track for 3,023. I hope they can at least stay Top 40. Missing the Top 30 is less than I had anticipated for this release though.

I think the label has let them down slightly by not having some cheaper options. £15.99 on iTunes is ridiculous but also the cheapest way to get this new version. drama.gif

I would have arranged these formats at the very least:

1. Green Vinyl
2. Pink Vinyl [doesn't exist]
3. Picture Disc Vinyl
4. 1CD version (2023 pressing) [doesn't exist]
5. 3CD version
6. Green Cassette [doesn't exist]
7. Pink Cassette [doesn't exist]

Maybe "individual member" covers on top of that would be overkill, but hey, I would have bought them. kink.gif I feel with reissues you may as well throw everything and the kitchen sink at it to do as well as possible.

My 3XCD arrived today smile.gif

I really need to invest in a vinyl player again but i bought the CD to try and help out it’s position.

I think it’s still doing well really it’s a pretty expensive buy even though there’s a lot of material on it.

The fans / girls should try and plug it if they can or try and get the iTunes price down for a last minute download push but I think it should still enter the top 40 happy.gif

^^ This is very much a profit release rather than chasing chart positions, the fact that they’ve priced the download at £16 shows that they know they are only appealing to the hardcore fans rather than casuals picking it up.

As fans we want to see it as high as possible but the label are not seemingly going to lose mark up and profit to get it 4 places higher in the charts.

As long as the label is ultimately pleased with the sales, enough for them to keep doing releases for every album, then that's the main thing (and I hope it's not just studio albums because I want Something Kinda Ooooh on vinyl *_* )

Though I do dream of Chemistry being able to out-peak #11 with a re-release, and judging by Sound of the Underground, this likely won't happen kink.gif
