Live in the Moment was a nice track but it never got close to Feel It Still for me sadly. Lost in Istanbul was a great BJSC entry though and one I went back to lots afterwards, and 1999 is a really catchy piece as well!

Starting off my top 10 of 2018 we see a former BJSC representative appearance, except this one is unique as the artist was under the ineligible umbrella last year as the song was from 2007... VNV Nation's hauntingly thought provoking 'Illusion' failed to Qualify for us and it was a bit of an injustice I think but anyhow fast forward to 2018 and what music are they releasing nowadays and is it decent material? well imo it is as this is VNV's first single off their new album Noire. 'When Is The Future' is sonically and electronically cool with lyrics that really connect to a listener as it travels through space and time etc and for me was a very welcome return even if I haven't listened to all of their stuff (especially in the last decade).

Next we have breakthrough single 'Leave A Light On' from a guy called Tom Walker, the track took off this year after being featured on an advert after it had a disappointing chart run originally only making it to 41 but along comes May of 2018 and LALO is well inside the top 10. Tom Walkers song has powerful lyrics and the piano part if beautiful but I can see why his voice might rub people up the wrong way as I know rough vocals like that aren't very buzzjack welcoming but I like them and find his voice distintive. It is a shame his other material hasn't been as good for me.. 'Angels' is ok but nothing to write home about and 'My Way' was disappointly average. Improving on his 50th placing on my EOY countdown last year by 41 places, congrats Tom but he's not best improvement overall as a fellow late last year but took off in a big way song is still to come.

and Ariana Grande's comeback 'No Tears Left To Cry' sits in 8th song of the year for me which is her absolute best and overtakes 'Into You' in that retrospect!

Two songs that came out last year but really took off this year, Lost Without You' by Freya Ridings and 'Feel It Still' by Portugal. The Man sees themselves within my top 10 and they both have something in common... they both are huge grower! Both of these songs on first listen I really didn't think anything of (case could be said for most songs I guess) them but when you take the time to re listen to them.. that's when it clicks and you wonder why it didn't straight away. LWY is a stunning ballad that should easily draw someone into the emotion and everything else, and FIS is immediately off to a good beat and rhythm and catchy singalong chorus yet it didn't connect with me at all until I heard it make the chart in the car when it first entered.. says a lot about where songs improve in different surroundings eh? anyway they became monster hits and Freya in particular has a lot of pre chart awareness as 'Lost Without You' was fingertips away from winning BJSC 103 for FSR Rontvia but sadly a tiebreaker of most votes went against her in the favour of 'Word of Mouth' by Metroplane which also appears in my countdown and is really catchy so not ill feelings!

Some great songs in that last lot - Leave a Light On is my favourite by quite a way from Tom, his voice sounds so good in it and I'm so glad it became a hit! Freya's voice is beautiful as well and I'm beginning to get into it again, and Feel It Still remains a real earworm wub.gif

It is a lovely song, was rare to see a raw piano ballad take off so well. Thanks Dan!.

Same here Pete, I can understand if his voice isn't people's cups of tea but I disagree haha. Add to the emotion in what's he's saying.

We reach the first song to drop out of the top 5 that were left and it comes from the lady who finished atop my chart of 2017... Pink, with her remake of 'A Million Dreams' from the humongous The Greatest Showman, well it's the re-imagined album but point still intact. It was inescapable all year and it took me till November to watch it at some social group thing (wasn't intentional). Was decent but for me it's not THAT good and is over hyped a little too much. Anyways the songs aren't all my cup of tea either (This is Me is overrated too) with 'Never Enough' being the best of the actual film versions but Pink's version of 'A Million Dreams' is SO GOOD and so good that I'd consider separating it from the album because let's be honest Pink has done lots of film soundtracks and released them as part of her albums. This felt perfect to release round Christmas as it has that seasonal feeling to it for me.

After a last minute shuffle as the 2-4 are all really tight with preference.. we have the first George Ezra track to drop out as 'Shotgun' finishes in 4th place. One of the summer tracks for sure and it was the song to give him his first number one with too (most likely my chart as well if it still existed). George has a huge year and one that surprised a lot of people as his initial comeback song 'Don't Matter Now' in May of 2017 flopped on it's ass and he seemed destined to be a one album wonder in terms of singles which until 2018 was appearing to be the case!

There's really not a lot of difference in which George track I prefer as they are both on equal and would probably be joint if there was such thing but since the last couple of weeks I have begun to tire of 'Shotgun' now and hearing 'Paradise' on the Radio 1 EOY caught my attention as i hadn't really heard it half as much lately even though it was everywhere at first. I think due to not hearing Paradise quite as much now helps its chance to be my preferred choice but 'Shotgun' was also an obsession for me during the summer.. 2018 was certainly his year no doubt !

I still haven't watched The Greatest Showman but the songs from it are so special. Hard to believe 'A Million Dreams' wasn't written specifically for P!nk considering how perfectly it suits her!

Edit: Oops just read the rest of your paragraph, so you definitely won't agree with me on the soundtrack laugh.gif Anyway looking forward to the big #1 reveal!!

Nice to see double Ezra here, Paradise was the track that got me back into him but Shotgun was the real grower - I didn't think much of it as an album track but it went on to be my favourite from him this era!

Coming in at 2nd place we have new pop girl on the scene Ava Max with her catchy hit 'Sweet But Psycho'. This was first brought to my attention via BJSC when I was hosting the contest back in September after my win. The best part of hosting BJSC duties along with announcing the DNQS/ Q's was seeing what people were submitting which of course I have permission to see and even songs that people changed etc. Anyways Ava Max was unfortunately entered 3 times (by Ojnoj, Bhangraand Joedonia, Ultraviolenceland were also eyeing it up as a potential too) which per the rules got Vetoed and the song was also taking off on some Europe charts too so it was a combination of things. The song is a basic touch of pop but basic is never a bad thing if done well... the song is incredibly catchy. I didn't know if it was going to do much in the charts so it was a pleasant surprise to see it gain traction and take off with radio support and the song even was in contention for Christmas Number One before being beaten by a last surge for a Charity cover ripoff of 'We Built This City' which was altered to singing about sausage rolls. The song itself was a joke but then it was novelty but it was for a good cause, foodbanks are a very cause to support but I was bummed that it beat Ava on the last day or two and just when I was pleased she was going to remove the Ariana song which is quite average and had spent too long on top as well . Thankfully 'Sweet But psycho' managed to grab the #1 albeit in controversial fashion with OCC estimating Mariah streams over Christmas and deciding to find a method to still keep her off number 1 despite having record christmas streams despite ACR and was technically number one anyway... back to Max though and it seems despite all that she legitimately managed to grab a number 1 hit and is looking to have a lengthy reign which at present doesn't look to be in jeopardy. Long may that continue. I'm pretty sure Ava will have another bop or few up her sleeve but even if she remains a one hit wonder then that's fine as SWP will be amongst the best of that group!

and so here we are with my SONG OF 2018... for the first time since entering BJSC in 2015, a BJSC song and a Summericia entry at that top my best of the year chart. Katty Heath's 'Connection Through Sound' is a lovely, delicate slice of emotional trance which was entered into the host (moi's) contest. It was a toss up between Katty Heath and No_4mat's 1992, the latter of which I submitted first before changing back after listening to both my potentials a few more times the same day.. very fast ha. 'Connection Through Sound' proved successful with the BJSC supporters.. especially those who are trance/dance fans and we were awarded 20th place with the track which did MILES better than what our last trance entry did (should have qualified too tho </3 ) The song also helped us keep our number of qualifiers aside from Jan and hiatus going strong as our pattern went from February... 15,20,4,1 & 20 in order respectively so I was impressed even when taking into account we took a rest for 3/4 months in between. You know Bre will technically count is a break up of sorts but I'm not basing it on consecutive contests entered cool.gif It's the first BJSC related song to finish atop a eoy Chart of mine, getting higher than Keys&Cages 3rd and CRIM3S 5th in the last two years.. the former of which had a huge chart run before my then existing chart was closing down again. Katty's effortless vocals really deliver and takes one into a new dimension and an adventure which is what a perfect trance track is for me. Congrats to Katty Heath for becoming my song of 2018!
