Seems a tad pointless given everyone will have already seen The Legend of Ruby Sunday, and going into the finale at the same time you could be watching it on iPlayer at home without the noise of anybody else in a cinema

Boom gets 3.578m after 7 day consolidation and sits at 18th place on the weekly chart. That's the 2nd lowest rating for a New Series episode behind Legend of the Sea Devils on 3.47m. Given this was an episode that was trailed as possibly doing better on catch up by word of mouth due to it being a better episode that's an interesting viewing figure.
Will reserve my overall judgements for the end of the series as there's still a chance viewing figures could pick up. |

Also a chance that in the end none of it really matters because the global outreach of the series far outweighs viewing figures for one channel in the UK.

Interesting to note too if we're going to pay so much attention to ratings, that for every consolidated figure in the series so far, the additional numbers have actually increased week-on-week. Space Babies started with an increase of 1.46m from overnight to consolidated, The Devil's Chord 1.49m and Boom 1.54m.

...and yet still the most-watched programme from the date of broadcast
 No matter how much people try to put a negative spin on things for Doctor Who, the bigger picture shows it speaks more of the general decline in TV ratings as a whole and that Doctor Who can still be at the top of the pack. RTD and the BBC are both happy with the series' performance too, going by recent comments it's exceeded targets. |

With 3.52m in the ratings Rogue becomes the 5th lowest rating Doctor Who episode of all time on it's 7 day figures and takes the number of Series 14 episodes in the 10 lowest viewed up to 3.

Honestly couldn’t give one about ratings. I’ve really enjoyed what we’ve had from this series. The entertainment is back, the thrilling viewing is back and even if I was the only one to watch, I’d still deem the series a success based on the fact it has me enjoying DW again.

It's been declining in ratings for years and I couldn't give a toss either way. I'm happy to have a much higher quality series than last time and to actually look forward to seeing the show again. I follow TV shows for enjoyment and appreciation of the art form, I couldn't imagine having that affected in any way by how it's doing in the ratings. |

Comparing ratings from previous decades to now just doesn’t work, for the same reason why you can’t compare single ‘sales’ from the sales era to the streaming era. Things are done differently and they just don’t compare.

True, but the high cost of the show now vs ratings is what counts, and what Disney thinks about subsidising them costs for their ratings. They havent released any figures but it's yet to make any list - Star Wars' The Acolyte (getting slagged off) is 2nd, Simpsons and Modern Family top 10, Family Guy ditto and How I Met Your Mother. Old shows. Doctor Who has not made any Nielson ratings or had any official pumping-up blurbs, "arent we doing well!" because it hasn't been doing well.
So that leaves the UK ratings as key and going back to the old model of the BBC paying for it and selling it on to make money/screening abroad. If the BBC don't care about ratings (they aren't obliged to if it fulfills a target audience aim, in this case 8 to 30 age group - but it's unclear whether that audience has increased in absolute terms or just in comparison to older fans dropping off more than that target audience), fine, but if one goes around slagging off fans who have a valid opinion and are told to stop watching then if you don't like it...errr don't be shocked when they do that. Commercial suicide and arrogant. Streaming hasn't just erupted this year, either, so that can't be blamed - yes the market is more fragmented because there's more options available, but it's fair to compare with Jody Whittaker era, that was versus streaming, and total viewing figures are down pretty badly. So maybe RTD needs to reflect that talking babies, magic flying pirate ship baby-eating goblins, drag queens killing music and racist white rich people getting murdered by judgemental IT systems maybe isnt the best way to win over an audience. A tense episode built around standing on a bomb might be the way.....(and yes I'm aware it was one of the lowest rating of the series but these things are cumulative, people turn off as a result of what has gone before. Had it been up earlier it might have drawn people in more) |

Interesting that you've chosen to try and highlight how poorly you believe the show may be performing by indicating it's not featured on any Nielsen rating lists thus far, yet acknowledge that no figures have been released. Some people really are desperate for the show to underperform no matter what, it's laughable at this point. The only Nielsen data available at present is for week 13-19 May (one week into the series airing).
To add some additional perspective too, looking at the data available for Disney+, Doctor Who climbed from #28 to #8 in their own lists, and was the most-watched live action show in the US on the platform. It was top 10 in 28 different countries and #10 worldwide. So no matter how you try and spin it, it's doing well considering it has just been added to the platform with a brand new series, and not the entire back catalogue of the show to support it. On top of that, returning to the UK... for Series 13, the show averaged at 17th most-watched programme of the week, while for the 60th specials and the new series it's averaging at the 8th/9th most-watched programme of the week. A vast improvement. The advantage older shows like Modern Family and such have over new shows when it comes to streaming is people will re-watch them because they provide the comfort and familiarity that some people look for in streaming. It's easy to dive back in and watch so many episodes of a 20-minute sitcom at a time, so naturally they are going to perform well. These shows are not major ratings smashes on cable TV in the US. The total overall decline in ratings across television as a whole simply can't be used as a basis for an attack on the type of stories that RTD is generating, either. I'd kindly ask that you yourself be mindful and more respectful and reflect on your choice of language, Popchartfreak, when commenting on the characters the show has introduced. A drag artist playing a character that is in no way alluded to being a drag artist in the show itself =/= 'drag queens killing music'. |
