George Ezra
Green Green Grass

2nd single from Gold Rush Kid
Released: 22nd April 2022
Label: Sony Music Entertainment UK

Video

Biography

George Ezra’s spirited folk-pop sing-alongs could have thrived in any era, but their mix of worldly curiosity, unbridled optimism and a few playful loops and synths reflects a truly millennial ideal. Born George Ezra Barnett in Hertfordshire, England in 1993, the singer/songwriter grew up seeking comfort in the wordplay of folk laureates like Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie and the raw, emotional resonance of blues masters like Lead Belly. He trained his voice to sound as bold and booming as the latter, and honed his writing chops while travelling—an activity he’d been fascinated with since falling in love with Paddington Bear as a kid. The fictional teddy would come to inspire Ezra’s 2014 debut album, Wanted on Voyage, a phrase found on Paddington’s suitcase. Singles “Budapest” and “Barcelona” burst with buoyant acoustic hooks while evoking the modest sensibility of Ed Sheeran. They also represent a clear sense of place, and Ezra’s eternal wanderlust, something he slips into each of his effervescent works—whether that’s finding “Paradise” in love or riding “Shotgun” to anywhere. That exuberant joie de vivre feels ever more evocative under the influence of his robust baritone, a soothing sonorousness that goes down like a finely aged wine. - Apple Music

Sigrid and Bring Me The Horizon
Bad Life

4th single from How To Let Go
Released: 22nd April 2022
Label: Island Records

Video

Biography

Sigrid
A leading voice of Scandipop’s next wave, Sigrid combines forthright lyrics with irresistible hooks. Born in Ålesund, Norway, in 1996, Sigrid Solbakk Raabe began her music career on a dare: Her older brother, a singer/songwriter, challenged her to write and perform a song at one of his shows. The then-16-year-old Sigrid accepted, and the next year she released her first single, “Sun,” and began performing at local festivals like Øyafestivalen. Her major-label debut single, the swirling “Don’t Kill My Vibe,” became an international sensation almost immediately upon its 2017 release; she was named an artist in Apple Music’s Up Next program after its success, and she released her debut EP of the same name a few months later. Her cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Everybody Knows,” which appeared on the Justice League soundtrack, cemented her as part of the late-2010s mope-pop zeitgeist, and her 2019 full-length album, Sucker Punch, showed how she’d honed her ability to balance festival-ready choruses with introspective yet self-affirming lyrics. Two singles from that album, “Strangers” and “Don’t Feel Like Crying,” became significant hits in the UK. Sigrid established herself as one of pop's brightest stars quickly, a font of maturity and promising songwriting savvy. - Apple Music

Bring Me The Horizon
“Why would you want to make a record with all the songs sounding the same?” Bring Me The Horizon singer Oliver Sykes posed this question during an interview with Apple Music, and it very much reveals the guiding principle behind BMTH’s always-shifting music. As with a caterpillar’s metamorphosis into a butterfly, the band that started in the mid-2000s by unleashing a particularly vicious brand of metalcore is a vastly different creature from the one that achieved stardom with 2015’s That’s the Spirit, a meticulously crafted blend of alt-rock melodies, thunderous guitars, and electronic music. And that isn’t even half of it. Within their hits, the band (not unlike their heroes LINKIN PARK in the nu-metal days) consistently incorporate elements from styles across the pop-music spectrum. In addition to the EDM synths busting through “Throne,” there are immaculately polished vocals woven into the otherwise snarling “Mantra.” Then there’s “Nihilist Blues,” a 2019 collaboration with electro-pop eccentric Grimes that sees Bring Me The Horizon completely ditching the mosh pit for the all-night rave. None of this has gone down in a bubble, it should be noted. Along with the similarly minded I Prevail and A Day to Remember, Bring Me The Horizon belong to a cluster of forward-thinking metalcore outfits who have redefined heavy, riff-fueled music with a love of genre-busting adventurousness and utterly infectious hooks. - Apple Music

Biography

Elton John
At the height of the fever dream that was Elton John’s life in the ’70s, the singer-songwriter had the optician Dennis Roberts design a pair of giant, sculptural glasses studded with 57 battery-powered lights in the shape of the name Elton—to the tune of about $5,000. Adjusted for inflation, you’re talking about something more like $25,000. But John had a show to put on, and wouldn’t that be something to talk about?

The excess was always apparent: the rhinestones, the costumery, the old Hollywood glamour retrofitted for a new, gender-bending world. But beneath the feathers, John’s music—written with the lyricist Bernie Taupin—was direct and unpretentious, the kind of rock ’n’ roll storytelling that met you where you were. Even if you didn’t know exactly what it meant—who is the dancer, and why are they so tiny?—the feeling was immediate, universal. By 1973’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, John said they were writing a couple of songs at breakfast and recording them before lunch. This was pop music, John argued: You weren’t supposed to think about it too much, and god help you if you did. And yet here we are, singing the songs five decades later.

Born Reginald Dwight in Pinner, England, in 1947, John took to the piano young, studying on a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music while obsessively listening to Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. They were so physical, John marvelled—they didn’t just play the piano, they beat it. He started playing in pubs at 15 and, around 20, met Taupin through a want ad in a music magazine.

There were good years and bad ones, highs and lows—that handful of Valium before jumping into the swimming pool in 1975, for example, or the disco album, which John himself described as jumping on a dying bandwagon—but he has always endured, emerging from the debauchery of the ’70s and redefinitions of the ’80s bruised but never beaten, a gay icon, AIDS activist, philanthropist, Knight Bachelor, and father of two. In 2018, nearly 50 years after his debut album, he embarked on a three-year farewell tour, and published his first autobiography, Me, in 2019. The host of Apple Music 1’s Rocket Hour, Elton has been the recipient of countless awards (Grammys, Oscars, BRITs, Tonys, Ivors), has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and, in 2020, was awarded the Companion of Honour.
- Apple Music

Dua Lipa
There’s purpose in Dua Lipa’s euphoric pop. “For me, it’s about championing women and putting ourselves in the position of power,” the singer told Apple Music in 2020, ahead of the release of her second album, Future Nostalgia. “I have been inspired by the female alphas that have shown me that we can do it. And that we can wear the pants, you know? We need more of that in music.” Forcing the world to get a little more comfortable with female alphas has been a mission statement for Lipa (born in London to Kosovar Albanian parents in 1995) since her 2017 self-titled debut. It housed the triumphant breakup smash “New Rules”, the self-love anthem “IDGAF” and the assured “Hotter Than Hell”—songs which made it clear that this was no ingénue, but rather an outspoken, effortlessly cool face of pop’s future. Indeed, that status was cemented a year later when Lipa made history as the first female solo artist to receive five BRIT Award nominations. She won two and, in 2019, added two Grammys to her mantelpiece.

Despite the success of her debut, Lipa wasn’t interested in recreating its hits. “People always say, ‘The second album is really scary,’ but for me, it’s more scary to go back into the studio and try to create something like ‘New Rules’ or ‘IDGAF’ over and over again,” she said. “I feel like I’d end up in a vicious cycle of trying to get somewhere but never being able to mature as an artist.” And so, to move forward, she pivoted to the past, drawing on disco and funk—and filtering it through her ahead-of-its-time pop—to arrive at Future Nostalgia. Decadent and every bit as empowering as those early hits, it brought Lipa her first Mercury Prize nod, multiple Grammy nominations and a rightful place in pop’s upper echelons. And with it, too, came Lipa’s new purpose. Released just as the world went into lockdown amid the coronavirus crisis, Future Nostalgia became an urgent tonic for tough times—danced to in living rooms across the world. Yet Lipa wasn’t done there: Five months later, she unveiled Club Future Nostalgia, a thrilling remixed version on which the singer teamed up with club queen The Blessed Madonna, and guests including Madonna, Missy Elliott, Gwen Stefani and Mark Ronson, to bring lockdown-fatigued listeners another dose of escapism. “I didn’t think I’d be putting albums out during a global pandemic,” added Lipa. “But it’s just about creating experiences for everyone at home. That’s the most important thing for me now.”

All of this, of course, is only just the beginning. “I really feel like I’m finding my feet,” said Lipa. “I feel so proud of Future Nostalgia as a whole and the most confident and the most myself making it. But I’m already planning the next move.”

Biography

Like drawing the curtains to let natural light flood a dark room, Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and All-American fencing champion Em Beihold sprinkles sunny melodies over sadness, sowing the seeds for pensive and powerful pop. Born and raised in Los Angeles of half-Persian descent, music called to her at just six-years-old. She spent years in piano lessons, learning classical and jazz. Simultaneously, she obsessed over favorite artists such as Regina Spektor.

At her very first live show in 2016, director Michelle Schumacher enlisted Em to contribute a song to her film I’m Not Here starring Academy® Award winner J.K. Simmons. The songstress penned “Not Who We Were” for the movie, and it also adorned her independent debut EP, Infrared, a year later. In 2020, she launched her TikTok page. The chorus to “City Of Angels” reacted virally on the platform, translating to 5.6 million Spotify streams. She maintained this momentum in 2021 with “Groundhog Day.” Not only did the initial teaser light up social media with 20 million views, but the song cracked the Spotify Viral 50 in the U.S. and The Philippines, surpassing 6.6 million Spotify streams. After generating tens of millions of streams independently and receiving acclaim from The Wild Honey Pie, Indie Shuffle, Voyage LA, and more, she immediately makes a connection on her Moon Projects/Republic Records debut “Numb Little Bug.”

Biography

Acraze AKA Charlie Duncker, is showing to be a true visionary as he conquered the bold transition from his speaker-rattling bass sound to a more sophisticated house approach. Even before its official release, the now viral smash “Do It To It” on Thrive Music, spread like wildfire around the world. From every DJ, to influencer, to media outlet, the budding artist is proving to have an undeniable impact in the current global dance music scene. Acraze’s anthem went from being coined first as the ‘Song of the Summer’ to now ‘Song of the Year’ for 2021. Although Acraze is only 26 years-old, this moment did not come overnight. He grew up grinding the DJ circuit across the country, while developing his sound and collaborating with other rising producers. Demonstrating remarkable growth in a short period of time, Acraze is proving to be an act with a promising career ahead. - Spotify

Biography

Tyga
When it comes to delivering trunk-rattling, summer-worthy bangers, Tyga is as reliable as the changing seasons, and yet the Compton native always manages to surprise. The deliciously raunchy and flossy MC (born Micheal Ray Stevenson in 1989) combines his deep fandom of Jiggy-era hip-hop with a craftsman’s approach to rhyming that he picked up while being mentored by Lil Wayne from age 17 on. As an early Young Money signee, Tyga developed a smooth SoCal swag that stood out alongside Nicki Minaj and Drake (see 2009’s “BedRock”), and his work ethic was right in line—he dropped four mixtapes a year back then and began a partnership with Chris Brown that would generate albums’ worth of infectious, bass-boosted jams. Tyga broke out on his own with 2011’s enduring “Rack City,” which not only introduced the world to DJ Mustard’s menacing groove but also spawned an award-nominated adult film directed by Tyga himself. That mix of creative smarts and curveballs powered him through, among other LPs, 2015’s Kanye West-overseen The Gold Album and 2018’s wholly sung Kyoto. But just as fans began to wonder if departures were the new norm, Tyga unleashed a series of party anthems—starting with “Taste” and compiled on 2019’s Legendary—that affirmed his status as the Saint of Slappers who never actually left. Did Tyga ever doubt his place in the pantheon? “Nah,” he told Apple Music. “I sit back and wait. You can get impatient as an artist. You might see somebody else winning, but it’s all timing.” Amen. - Apple Music

Doja Cat
Some call the end of summer the “slow news season”—school's still out, holidays are in full swing, and headlines tend to get weird—and Doja Cat (born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini in 1995) knew just what to do about it. In August of 2018, the Los Angeles singer and rapper dropped “Mooo!”, a sultry R&B jam, thick with double entendres and sung from the perspective of a cow. It went viral, thanks to an unforgettable, improbably catchy chorus that had people wondering: Could she possibly be for real? But Doja, who released her debut EP, Purrr!, in 2014, and her first album, Amala, in 2018, was no novelty act. In the years since, she has proven herself one of pop music’s savviest, most audacious characters. She raps nimbly, switching up her cadence from one syllable to the next, and her pop-culture nods (referencing actresses Tia and Tamera Mowry or sampling blink-182 and Paul Anka) are just as unpredictable as her dizzying flow. Her presentation is both tough and coquettish. As she demonstrated over and over on her 2019 album, Hot Pink, she assumes a fun and fundamentally empowered stance in her singing and rapping about sex. And woe to anyone who might take issue with that: “Sex is meaningful, it is!” she told Apple Music, with her trademark defiant charm. - Apple Music
