Chart Commentary

The most talked about song of the past week, Rita Ora's new single Girls is by far and away the biggest track in my chart this week, blasting its way to a #1 debut. It becomes Rita's eighth #1 in total, bettered only by The Vamps (13), One Direction (11) and Delta Goodrem (9), and matched by Justin Bieber. Interestingly, Rita's chart history now has two separate runs of four consecutive #1 singles! The initial run started with How We Do (Party), and went on to include I Will Never Let You Down, Black Widow and Doing It (although it's worth noting that Shine Ya Light and Radioactive failed to chart in this period). The latest run began with Lonely Together, and also includes the mammoth six-week run of Anywhere as well as For You, a #1 earlier this year. The second run is made even more impressive by the fact it occurred in less than a year, whereas the original run of four #1s occured over three years. Altogether, it's Rita's 12th top 10 hit.

Alongside Rita on the track are three other female artists who are no strangers to my chart. Girls becomes the second #1 for Bebe Rexha, following her feature on Louis Tomlinson's Back to You last summer, and her seventh top 10 hit. Charli XCX gets her third #1, and first since Doing It (also with Rita) three years ago. Her first was Fancy, with Iggy Azalea, back in 2014 - my top song of the year. It's her tenth top 10, and she bookends this week's top 10 with her Lil Xan collaboration Moonlight at #10. Finally, Cardi B scores her very first #1 hit. Her previous highest was #5 hit Finesse with Bruno Mars. She features at #20 also this week, with her own single I Like It.

One of the most consistent hitmakers in my chart's history, Selena Gomez has very rarely missed the top 10 with a single since her first solo album in 2013. She scores her 12th top 10 this week with Back to You, a song from the 13 Reasons Why season 2 soundtrack. It's her second #2 hit in the past year, after Fetish. Interestingly, she only has one #1 single to her name, courtesy of Charlie Puth's We Don't Talk Anymore in early 2016.

Absent from my chart for almost two years, Norwegian popstar Jesper Jenset makes a return to form this week. He debuted in 2015 with Superhero, a #10 hit, and quickly followed it up with #9 hit Never Coming Back. However, it was in mid 2016 when he achieved a huge #2 hit with High (also my final top 10 result in BJSC). Since then however, his tracks have been quite formulaic and not especially exciting. FOR LOVE. marks a huge return to form and he scores his fourth top 10, and second best peak to date at #5.

As expected, Eurovision makes another big impact this week, as most songs continue to climb. Leading the way once again is Ireland's Ryan O'Shaughnessy, who climbs four spots to #3 with Together. Benjamin Ingrosso's Dance You Off, a #2 hit earlier this year for Sweden, vaults back up 16 places to #17, while Israel's winning track Toy, by Netta, is also up at to #18. Michael Schulte's You Let Me Walk Alone (Germany) re-enters at #23 with a #7 peak, Saara Aalto's #12 peaking Monsters (Finland) rebounds to #29, and the UK's SuRie enters at #35 with Storm. Cyprus' Eleni Foureira is the only Eurovision artist to see a fall this week, with Fuego down one to #11, but that's more because of a busy week than anything else.

Interestingly, the second highest Eurovision song comes from a track that didn't actually make it to the contest. Aitana and Ana Guerra's Lo Malo made the final three songs in the Spanish selection this year, but failed to win. I only heard it for the first time last weekend, and it finally makes my chart, becoming both artists' first hits at #4.

In the album chart, Charlie Puth scores his second #1 album as Voicenotes finally gets its long-awaited release. It shifts Lil Xan and Anne-Marie down a place each, despite strong showings from both once again. Nine Track Mind spent two weeks at #1 upon debut in 2016, and a huge 32 weeks in my chart altogether.

Finally, in the singles chart, we see a debut from ANNALIA and a new peak for Benjamin Rihan.

Hello Joseph!
Great #1 and #2, both of them are in my top 40 in my chart this week as well!
Also great debut for "If You're Over Me" and great re-entry for "You Let Me Walk Alone" (Very happy that Germany did very well!)
Great chart as always!

I wonder what Selena songs would get #1 in less competitive weeks...

Add another one onto the end and it's not incorrect xx

I would say Good For You, It Ain't Me, Bad Liar, Fetish and now Back to You were all VERY unlucky to miss #1! She's due a solo #1 soon, let's hope her next single is better timed...
