Music Guests on TV shows this week
Sunday, Sunday night at the Palladium: Will Young, David Gray and LeAnn Rimes sing a duet, classical pianist Lang Lang and Croatian double-act 2 Cellos
Friday, Graham Norton: Florence and The Machine
Friday, Alan Carr: Maroon 5

City Lights to smash!

Posted by: SevenSeed May 23 2015, 11:13 PM

Back to huge #1 sales this week with "Want to Want Me" then. Probably Jason's best track so I've no problems with that, just hoping it can maybe hold 'Somebody' off the top spot next week!

Garrix/Usher should make the iTunes top 5 quite easily, hard to tell how much streaming will hamper it's official position

Posted by: girl_from_oz May 23 2015, 11:19 PM

As for the musical guests on tv this week, Florence and The Machine on Graham Norton show, that will probably have more affect on their album sales then the single though

Nothing of note to root for there, so hopefully 'Heroes' goes top 40, as well as maybe 'Rhythm Inside' sneaking in somehow. wub.gif

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 May 23 2015, 11:31 PM

Come on Martin Garrix, Mans Zelmerlow and Elina Born heart.gif

Posted by: Chez Wombat May 23 2015, 11:34 PM

Heroes making the top 40 would be nice, Jason Derulo's song is bland as per usual for him but I'm sure it will have mega sales, which would be good at least.

They didn't have more points than any other country last year... Norway 2009 and Sweden 2012 had a lot more

Posted by: AcerBen May 24 2015, 01:05 AM

Interestingly, Italy WALKED the televote, and Sweden only won thanks to juries.

Televote points would've been
Italy 356. Russia 286. Sweden 272.

In the UK however, Sweden came 3rd in televote, Italy 4th. Lithuanian and Polish immigrants seem to have hijacked the top 2.

Posted by: ¡bré! May 24 2015, 01:08 AM

Happy to see Aminata relatively high up, might be in with a chance of scraping the sales top 100! The songs don't seem to be doing nearly as well on iTunes as they did last year in general though. Hm.

I didn't mean of all time, I meant in the 2014 contest they had more points than any other country but in this years contest the tables have well and truly turned for Austria.

Posted by: Iz~ May 24 2015, 01:11 AM

Well it would stand to reason that the two songs the UK public are downloading most are two of the more overrated ones for me. Nice to see Mans so high though, he was a name I never thought I'd see in this thread before this year.

Didn't realise New York Raining was out this week - set to do well. No one will beat Mr Derulo though. It'll be interesting to see its sales - could be decently huge although it's download sales may fall a lot week on week due to the wait for its release. Should be a big steaming hit too!

I think last year's did better than usual because all the song were available individually to buy from the compilation album for just 79p each (most this year are "album only" and 99p), so it's probably a revert back to the years before when it wasn't so easy and cheap to buy the songs.

Yeh Calm after the Storm did so well and sold 22k at no9 but streaming and what you said will hamper them this yr!

Yeah streaming will ruin their official chart position unfortunately unless 'Heroes' can somehow take off on Spotify but I'm not holding my breath! kink.gif

I think the number of viewers will be a lot lower than last year due to the UK not standing a single chance, as opposed to last year when everyone did think the UK would be top 10

Well I could check iTunes if you want but it's a bit more research, I'm sure though Loreen was number 1

New York Raining is a real grower of a song. Shame Rita Ora doesn't do this type of music anymore. Apparently this is really mainstream and a record-label excerise for Charles Hamilton, who is even more talented than this record suggests. ohmy.gif

Jason Derulo for an easy #1 it would seem. He's really hit and miss for me (like everyone laugh.gif). My favourites from him are Ridin' Solo, Talk Dirty and Wiggle. This new one is alright I think, on par with In My Head, whereas his shockers are The Other Side or Don't Wanna Go Home.

He's remarkably consistent in getting hits if I'm honest. Not many people in 2009 would have predicted his staying power commercially. The same applies to Flo Rida too. Could even include the likes of Chris Brown, Usher & Ne-Yo who make similar music, but they're more R&B than Derulo who's more Pop imo.

The twitter page tells me they're an r&b/pop boyband (though the iTunes clip of this song is actually more dance/house than anything). Can't say I've heard of them either, though boybands pretty much always have a built-in, sizeable fanbase so I won't question it~

she flopped with her last single so Radio 1 dropped her from their playlist.

Hideaway and GIMH are amazing though so I'd like to think it was No Enemiesz that ruined it for her although Giant did comparatively poorly to Hideaway so that must've been the start of her decline

Just bought my copy, such a good collaboration! They performed it together at R1's Big Weekend yesterday but the crowd didn't really seem to know the words, so guess it still isn't as 'everywhere' as we'd like it to be. I'm happy for it to be a minor, long-running hit, though - just gotta' hope streaming can pick up and help it out.

For certain it'll have great longevity. Probably multiple weeks at #1 (if it can hold off Natalie La Rose next wk), since I don't see much proper competition for #1 until the 21 June release week (with Fifth Harmony/Tinie Tempah/Lost Frequencies etc.)

Posted by: Mart!n May 25 2015, 05:19 PM

I think Natalie La Rose is going to peak at #2, as Jason Derulo will probably pick up around 30k to 35k in stream sales, its the week after should be interesting, Walk The Moon release their new single, but Jason could still be ahead of them on steam sales (Week 3). So 3 to 4 weeks for Jason at #1, unless Walk The Moon get there on Week 2. I don't mind the new track from Jason, its ok-ish, its probably the only accessible single that I can stomach from him though.

At least "Lean On" has streams to protect against any sudden drop caused by the deletion of the single version. I get that they do it to direct sales towards the album, but are many people going to be purchasing the Major Lazer album anyway; they should just be happy they're getting one big hit.

Even if he only sells 100k though, he'll end up with a higher total because of streaming, which won't be the case for Taylor obv.

I don't think 50 Cent's lyrics are really suitable for primary school children, you know.

Didn't expect to see Jessie J back in the T10 any time soon, the label have really made a mess of these past two eras; 'Sweet Talker' has/had some great single material but lacks of video/promoting the same track worldwide caused everything to go a bit tits up.

This song actually sampled another song called "Ring Ding Ding" by dancehall group L.O.C which was in itself loosely based on Crazy Frog. The L.O.C song was doing the rounds on MTV Base and Channel U before Sean Paul released Temperature.

The most popular song of 2003 was 'Where Is the Love?' by the Black Eyed Peas (sales don't lie kink.gif)

The top 10 singles for that year was:

QUOTE
01 The Black Eyed Peas Where Is The Love?
02 R Kelly Ignition Remix
03 Evanescence Bring Me To Life
04 Blu Cantrell featuring Sean Paul Breathe
05 50 Cent In Da Club
06 Tatu All The Things She Said
07 Beyonce Crazy In Love
08 Girls Aloud Sound Of The Underground
09 Room 5 featuring Oliver Cheatham Make Luv
10 Gareth Gates & The Kumars Spirit In The Sky
In regards to cultural impact though, I'd argue that numbers 1, 5, 6, 7 & 8 would head the pack, so I definitely see what you mean tongue.gif 'Ignition Remix', 'Bring Me To Life' & 'Breathe' were absolute monster hits too though. 2003 was a good year all in all! wub.gif

2003 was awesome. It's 2015 but even in most (mainstream) clubs today I hear loads of 2003 hits.

In the US In Da Club was year-end #1 (but that chart was basically all airplay at the time).

1. 50 Cent - In Da Club
2. K. Relly - Ignition Remix
3. Sean Paul - Get Busy
4. Beyonce - Crazy In Love
5. 3 Doors Down - When I'm Gone
6. Matchbox Twenty - Unwell
7. Chingy - Right Thurr
8. Aaliyah - Miss You
9. Kid Rock - Picture
10. Evanescence - Bring Me To Life

The top 4 are club staples even today (I'm genuinely curious as to when they'll stop getting played, as it doesn't seem like it'll happen anytime soon, but they're getting quite old now...). #10 is a classic too, I'm sure it's been top 100 on iTunes quite a lot this decade.

I heard bits of Flashlight on the chart update today and she is still doing those vocal inflections that wore thin about 10 minutes after her debut in 2011, her voice really puts me off her. It may be fairly inoffensive for her but that's very much damning with faint praise.

I don't think "Sound Of The Underground" was big in cultural impact in 2003, it's only Girls Aloud fans that were referencing that song in '03 tbh. It wasn't one those those songs that were setting school playgrounds alight or in every shop, every TV advert or every car passing by on the street like songs such as In Da Club or Crazy In Love.

Make Luv by Room 5 was another big tune in 2003 due to the very popular at the time Lynx advert.

I would totally disagree here. I mean I'm a huge GA fan so I may be biased of course but Sound of the Underground is still so well-known to this day and stands out significantly amongst other British talent show winning singles because it's SO different. Plus it introduced the UK to the biggest girl group of the 21st Century. I think that constitutes a pretty big impact tongue.gif

I understand what you're saying but my main point is Sound Of The Underground wasn't a song that was inescapable in 2003, a person who didn't like that song could have easily avoided it for example unlike some other tunes that were knocking about at the time.

Yep, they're climbing which is great to see! (They were at #270 something when I checked yesterday!) So, SO happy for them wub.gif 'Flashlight' really isn't Jessie doing her usual vocal "acrobatics", at least not to the same extent. She's actually quite restrained on this and I love it the more I hear it!

Natalie La Rose climbing up pretty fast now that the release date is nearing closer! biggrin.gif I think everyone's accepted that she most certainly won't be number 1 now (they did a few weeks ago I think, or at least I and a couple of others did), but I really hope she's definitely top 2! She's not going to be a week behind on streaming either, which should hopefully help her impact in the opening week!

I never said it was a classic, I said it was still very well-known, which it is.

Posted by: OutstandingMixer May 28 2015, 01:45 AM

I'd say 'Sound Of The Underground' is a pop classic. It's a song that defined British pop in the early '00s, and still sounds fresh and original to this day.

Posted by: Joe. May 28 2015, 06:30 AM

I'd say Sound Of The Undergound was a classic. It's very well known.

Posted by: Cody Slayberry May 28 2015, 06:40 AM

I feel like there are different standards to what is considered a classic. When I first got interested in what was hot in the UK, there were sooooo many songs that I never heard of that were so big there (e.g. "Beggin'" wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif), so I would consider "Sound Of The Underground" a classic to UK standards. It was well received, introduced a huge pop group from the 21st century, and was innovative back when it was released.

Posted by: steve201 May 28 2015, 08:45 AM

Its all about opinions i suppose but The Promise for me was by far their biggest hit and it was near the end of their career. I thought after that they were going to go on and transform into a group that could go on for another 10 years.

If you compare 2 songs on the list that and Crazy in Love there is no comparison for me. CIL is one of the biggest pop songs of the century and will be played in 50 years time still imo.

Do you have to be so inflammatory? Good lord, get a grip. And you most realise people listen to music and form their opinions on that rather than the artist involved anyway?

Anyway, it's brilliant to see 'Where Are Ü Now' still doing so well. One of the best songs around right now wub.gif

because it's by Jessie J.

but really, it is quite weak for a Jessie J single. I was pleased to see it initially flop.

Posted by: Jade May 28 2015, 04:24 PM

I've finally heard 'Flashlight' and it is quite a lovely song, and pretty decent for Jessie J. It's only when she does the general screech thing (see 'It's My Party')/substitutes a portion of the melody for grating ad-libs that she becomes intolerable musically.

So I think I may actually be on board with this being a hit now, albeit preferred the version sang by Hailee in 'Pitch Perfect 2'.

I've not heard the studio version of the Olly song but the live performance didn't sell it well to me at all, it sounded pretty flat actually. I'm not surprised it hasn't had a bigger boost, especially as Seasons kinda killed the momentum of the campaign too.

That's not really a valid excuse - Ricky Martin's song was mostly unknown to the public before Monday night and it still didn't persuade them to buy it, whereas Olly's song is on the Radio 1 playlist and is the fourth single off an album that has sold well. Relevant or not, Ricky had one of the biggest promo slots possible in the UK right now and it didn't work out.

Jeez that Little Mix track is cheesy. Doesn't sound like a worthy #1 to me, given the stellar track we've had in 2015 thus far (bar the Smith/Legend collaboration, but that was for charity). Should have no problem reaching the summit though with low sales and lack of competition though; is Tinie Tempah and Jess Glynne's "Not Letting Go" the only track people see hitting #1 in the coming weeks?

I can see this being a big summer hit wub.gif

Sadly I think this has stalled now, will forever be in Firestone's shadow.

Another big new track could do well for him now though with the seeds planted.

'Stole The Show' is very poor compared to 'Firestone', but he's capable of greatness.

I do like 'Black Magic' but I would be disappointed if it managed to go to #01 as it doesn't sound like a #01 song in the slightest. I do think the charts are crying for pop songs right now though. 'Disco Love' would have went #01 on iTunes had it not been for new releases so imagine how it would have performed with decent enough radio airplay.

Wasn't that released the same week as Wrecking Ball, Berzerk, R U Crazy and Cheating? Would have been one of the campest #1s ever! laugh.gif

I think pure pop songs do well enough already laugh.gif More of them will turn even more people off the charts than are already and are always gonna have limited sales to certain demographics.

Since 2013, the charts have been relatively varied and lots of good stuff has charted. Hopefully this continues, but I do agree that pure pop will eventually become dominant again. In an ideal world, we'd have a 00s revival with all the great Hip Hop/R&B records as inspiration!

Tinie's new song has got a decent boost from the video premiere as well. cheer.gif Still can't see it getting to #1 though.

I think Radio 1 will playlist it soon, especially now Firestone is dying down -fingers crossed- biggrin.gif

I'm not sure of the point being made here. All songs are limited to certain demographics, are they not? Anything song that is popular, which it has to be to make #1 really, seems unlikely to make people turn off just because it's pop.

Have to say, I'm still baffled by the long-term success of Ship To Wreck, it has to honestly be F&TM's worst single to date
Thrilled for The Weeknd wub.gif
Jessie J, its a no from me
Surprised that Sheppard hasn't dropped out the top 100 yet, I assumed this would have a Tulisa/Conor type run
Loic & Mans doing much better than I expected they would
Nicki & Beyonce did incredibly well off the back of a video, especially with no promo or single release
Lawson entering the top 200 on Pre-Orders puke.gif

You'd be surprised how many #1s aren't really that popular - just because its the biggest selling song of the week doesn't mean it has widespread appeal.

I think more people would be put off a song if its pure or cheesy Pop than any other genre. Of course, if the song is catchy enough it can still do well (e.g. Call Me Maybe) but there's a large proportion of people who wouldn't be seen dead listening to stuff like that. laugh.gif

The massive songs of recent years are ones like Get Lucky, Blurred Lines, Happy & Uptown Funk - crossover hits which are not 'guilty pleasures' to listen to. They appeal to a wider audience than artists like Little Mix or The Saturdays.

well you would think that, but it doesn't explain why people are still buying songs like Lose Yourself and Mr Brightside over 10 years after its release (currently #231 and #268). I guess some songs just keep on selling.

Anyway 'Let It Go' is now at #92, not sure how significant a climb that is as I'm not sure where it previously was.

Older songs (as in pre-iTunes) tend to sell more though, because people tend to not have them in their iTunes collections. "Let It Go" on the other hand is very recent, and most people who wanted it probably already bought it.

I couldn't find any info on who Melina Carrey was when I checked. People obviously just don't know who originally sang that song so must think they're downloading the original version. From the looks of it, Melina also has a cover of A Thousand Years online too.

I thought it did quite well at the time. Obviously I was expecting a top 10 peak based on its pre-orders, but didn't it hold up quite well and have like 4 weeks in the top 20?

It's not getting much radio play at the moment, but Leona's doing a radio tour starting monday so we should see the pre-order reappear and start to rise. She'll also be performing on Sunday Night At The Paladium June 7th.

Ah, well hopefully that helps it start picking up interest. As great promo as the palladium gig is, I worry it is too early with the single release on the 28th. I would rather see the single brought forward but I am sure her new management have thought all this through.
