Before Christmas, Nelly Furtado shared some footage from her recording sessions with Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. Now the singer hits the studio with Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse, Nas) to record the follow-up to her multi-platinum English album Loose, due next summer. “It has a real classic sound to it, a sound that’s really authentic, super soulful,” says Nelly.
Good God.
He produced the tracks from her Best of. Says it all.
Ok, sounds interesting, looks like she is going back to her Folklore root.
6 years too late love I do hope she doesn't just do Loose part 2 and expect to get away with it, though by the sounds of it it'll be Folklore part 2, which I'm happy with. Still can't see that working particularly well commercially but as long as they're not as bad as the Best Of tracks...
Keep reading T.S.I as S.T.I, it's the whole Jessica Simpson- A Public Affair thing which I still always read as A Pubic Affair
I hope it's a Loose Part II rather than the I'm Like a Bird/Broken Strings type stuff.
I kind of wish she released an album sooner. If she'd released an (English) album every 2 years, she'd have remained as one of the biggest pop girls in the world, like she was during 2006/2007.
Also, this article:
http://popcrush.com/nelly-furtado-collaborate-rodney-jerkins-new-2012-album/
I just want a good solid pop album from her, similar to Loose, where you had the dance tracks but then songs like All Good Things which were reminiscent of her past albums, and i liked Night is Young and Girlfriend In This City from the best of.
I didn't mind Night Is Young but it's not the right sound for her at all. The other new tracks on the GH were definitely awful though.
'Try' pt. 2 please!
She's going for retro-soul.
Great music... thnx
She's missed the boat on this one, almost the dictionary definition on how to squander a glittering career. Shame really.
Nelly who?!
It may work out for her, but with the line up of Nas and Timbaland is a bit of a time warp. We're almost in 2012 Nelly! It's been SIX years!
I don't see how a break like this can squander a glittering career? Surely the music is what counts.
Just because Rihanna has been relentlessly visible for half a decade doesn't mean everyone has to do it. It's her choice to release music and do it in any way she sees fit.
I don't know what I'm looking for from Nelly Furtado more - the Folklore pt.2 or Loose pt.2. Folklore is much more unique but Loose is just absolutely brilliant from the beginning to the end. One of my all-time favourite albums.
All I want is good tunes - no matter what the style.
I'm a bit conflicted. What I love about Nelly is that she's great at shifting styles each album but maintaining quality, but I also want another Folklore But I agree with Tony actually, as long as I good it doesn't really matter I guess.
Just because Rihanna has been relentlessly visible for half a decade doesn't mean everyone has to do it. It's her choice to release music and do it in any way she sees fit.
It squandered her career for many reasons... first and foremost, although Loose was huge, it was the first time she'd felt like a megastar and she couldn't afford a five year break before new English language material, she should have kept up a presence, even if just by guesting on other peoples' singles (beyond Timbaland). You have to keep yourself in the public eye because unless you're Sade or Kate Bush or some other exception to the rule then people won't bother remembering to look out for your music when it does eventually come. The world of pop moves way too fast for that.
Maybe Nelly doesn't want to be huge and that's fine but I think most people work on the assumption that the kind of popstar who works with Timbaland and Danja and Darkchild is looking to be big. It's a fair assumption to make, wouldn't you say?
Folklore is still her best album in my opinion...
First Single is called: 'Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)'
Why did she have to murder her career. I loved her but then she just disappeared
I seriously think what happened with her GH and the single from it is testament that she's pretty much over, but time will tell.
Well it's her own fault.
Was it Darkchild who did Telephone or am i thinking of someone else?
I don't know if she's working with Timbaland or not. If she is, I think she has a shot at a comeback. If she's not, I doubt she's ever gonna be ''relevant'' again. She's been out of the spotlight for way too long like Jark has said.
Timbaland is definitely one of the best producers around, he knows how to make a hit. Songs that he produced in the 90s and early 00s still sound incredibly refreshing. If she's working with him I have faith in a comeback.
I'm not sure you can be relevant if you take a 6 year break, unless you're Kate Bush.
First single 'Big Hoops', supposedly released April 17th!
About f***ing time.
The full title of the album is The Spirit Indestructible, out June 19th.
Really, thats a good name if its true
I thought the title was a joke, is it like a biographical song about her earrings?
Excited this is ACTUALLY happening though, 6 years waiting since the amazing Loose is ridiculous!
Love the artwork and updated logo.
Hate the title.
I think everyone has forgotten about her
I always thought Nelly could no wrong but then she released Night Is Young......
I hoping Nelly can have a J.Lo type resurgence with her career, as she was great once, and I pray she can pull it out the bag again. 'The Night Is Young' was so poor, it was unbelievable.
I don't think Night Is Young is quite as bad as everyone makes out, it was just a major mistake she released it as a single imo, especially as the lead for the GH and that was probably why it flopped.
Night Is Young made her look like an old woman trying to be "down with the kids" for me. The video was awful.
'Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)' is the best song title of the year already. Let us hope it is amazing and Nelstarish.
Wow. I heard some of this song. It's amazing!
I hope the rumors of her working with Missy Elliott and Nas are true. Would like to hear them featured on the album.
Also read on wiki (with source) the standard version will be 14 tracks and deluxe at least 18. Too bad the lead single is not produced by Timbaland, but I really hope it's gonna be good. Would like to have another strong album like Loose.
Big Hoops sounds... interesting!
The single title is definitely an innuendo.
The clip sounds AMAZING! I've just got extremely excited for this album.
That sounded amazing.
The clip sounds amazing, can't wait for this. What I love about Nelly is she goes away, keeps quiet and comes back with something amazing.
IT SOUNDS AMAZING
I just hope its a hit.
BEST SONG OF THE LAST 5 YEARS.
11/10.
It sounds awesome... BAH! This has got me so excited!!
There's so much I love about that clip...the beat is massive...the lyrics ridiculous...the lack of anything like a Calvin Harris chordal synth...it just makes me so happy.
I will reserve my judgement once I heard the full version.
Bloody hell oh my days that sounds amazing!
Nelly is BACK
Sounds phenomenal. Any idea of when this premieres?
If the full track is as good as the clip suggests then I see her having no problems being huge again.
6 year break WHAT?!
Sounds incredibubbles. CAN'T WAIT <3
It's ironic that it's quite Timbo sounding though... (unless it is him, which in that case just ignore me.)
How people can call Beyonce's 'Run the World (Girls)' a complete mess and then call this the second coming in song form, I will never know.
Because Run The World is a complete mess.
It doesn't really sound that much like Run The World anyway. It's more like Kelly Rowland's Motivation with a slightly more hip-hop/Timbaland edge. I did love Run The World but the two can't really be compared.
It sounds really great. I've missed that Timbaland sound anyway, I hope he can bring it back into the mainstream again.
I hate it when people say she sold out with Loose,if they bothered to check they would know Nelly always changes her style.
Why does everyone keep mentioning Timbaland? This is produced by Darkchild. He has produced 8 songs on the new album.
From what I've read she went back into the studio with Timbaland once the Loose project had ended. But didn't like the results. Moved onto the spanish album and for the last 2 years shes been working on this.
She is stunning
Seems like it'll be a huge mix of styles
Sounds exciting! Let's hope she can avoid the fate of other female artists - third or fourth-album syndrome.
I don't really get fanboi over pop artists (besides M.I.A. perhaps) but Nelly is just so lovely, charismatic and quality. Such a likeability. Always changing up styles, trying out new things. Doing what she wants and taking her time with it. It's like an inverse almost to what Nicki Minaj has become or is becoming. A comparison I wish I could articulate better but cannot do so at this moment in time.
What i love about her is that she always seems very confident about her music.
And for good reason. She is utterly amazing.
I am going to revisit a BONAFIDE CLASSIC each day until 'Big Hoops' premieres. Let us start with:
*.*
1 Do It
2 Maneater
3 Say It Right
4 Turn Off The Light
5 Im Like A Bird
6 All Good Things
7 Afraid
8 Try
9 Promiscous(sp?)
10 Te Busque
That was sooooooooooooooo hard these are all ten out of ten.
She proper LOOKS like a popstar as well. She and Gwen Stefani always strike that balance between girl next door and completely unattainable superstar perfectly.
Shit on the radio
I like Shit on the radio, but it needs to be a bit shorter imo.
Nelly top 10? Don't mind if I do!
01 Maneater
02 Promiscuous
03 I'm Like A Bird
04 All Good Things (Come TO An End)
05 Try
06 Turn Off The Lights
07 Manos Al Aire
08 Powerless
09 Say It Right
10 Shit On The Radio
Controvershhh having Say It Right fairly low I know, but massive to all these!
Gwen, Nelly and Shakira all releasing albums in the same year. 14 year-old Ryan would be dying right now. I still remember buying Folklore on holiday, hearing Try for the first time and then smelling the recycled booklet. THERE HAS YET TO BE A NICER SMELLING BOOKLET.
***RATE AHOY***
01 Try
02 Turn Off the Light
03 Explode
04 Powerless (Say What You Want)
05 One-Trick Pony
06 Hey, Man!
07 Maneater
08 All Good Things (Come to an End)
09 Shit on the Radio (Remember the Days)
10 Childhood Dreams
I can't say I was ever particularly fond of Say It Right, nor the hundreds of clones that came after it.
No Do It love
'Do It' is possibly one of her worst singles to date. That horrible use of feathery fans in the video x_x
Do It is my least favourite single from her too, in fact it's probably my least favourite on Loose actually. It's not totally awful but I never really 'got' it and it's never made me think anything other than 'meh'.
Hey,Man!
GAH NELLY FURTADO.
I love 'Do It', although like with 'In God's Hands' I much prefered it when it was an album track than a single...
1. Say It Right
2. Try
3. Powerless (Say What You Want)
4. Maneater
5. In God's Hands
6. Do It
7. All Good Things (Come To An End)
8. Picture Perfect
9. Afraid
10. Shit On The Radio (Remember The Days)
I did it quickly so may not be 100% accurate, but it's just about right.
but its so dirty
In God's Hands Totally forgot that - it'd EASILY make my top 10!
Lets not forget she is a true re****. Seriously her interviews and stuff are BIZZARE.
Was she high in that?
I've tried looking for that Popworld interview but failed.
Her Popworld interviews were something else.
I've always really disliked Do It and In God's Hands. I still hate that Glow never got a release, it's brilliant.
http://www.veoh.com/watch/v6436897ncxqp7ej?h1=popworld+uk+-+2006
This is why I love her. What a woman.
She is a bit weird
In God's Hands is dull. Not single material. Glow on the other hand is a little slice of HEAVEN.
I do not even know what my comment above was supposed to mean. Apologies all around.
That Popworld interview just reminded me of the whole Floribella scenario. She was so AWKWARD in it.
When is this released?
I read on wiki that the single is supposed to be out this month, but I don't think it's going to happen.
Heard a one minute clip, it certainly sounds interesting
1 minute clip: http://soundcloud.com/jeff1317/big-hoops-1min
Sounds awesome.
Oh THANK GOD. I was so worried about her after the dreary new tracks on the best of, Big Hoops actually sounds like it could be one of the best things she's recorded. PANIC OVER.
The one minute clip sounds AMAZING, so excited for this.
Love that clip!
Like the funky artwork, I'm glad the original Nelly font hasn't been altered too drastically.
Wasnt sure at first but loving the clip now, I'm not sure as to wether it will be a hit or not but still a new Nelly album is never a bad thing.
Absolutely LOSING MY SHIT.
Its like a 2012 WHOA NELLY. 'Night is Young' is a DISTANT MEMORY.
HEY HEY HEY. Whats the scena-rioooooooooooo.
Someone PM me a link the second this drops!
Radio rip is out.
The WORD SPOKEN outro.
I don't know what to think atm.
I don't like it, although drum'n'bass is a welcome change to dubstep.
Someone has been listening to Crystalline.
Listened to the clip, but I will reserve my judgement until I hear the full version.
Love love love it, I think its quite different to the other shit out at the moment, wouldnt expect anything less from Nelly.
There's a radio rip on Popjustice:
http://www.popjustice.com/briefing/what-do-we-find-out-about-nelly-furtado-in-her-new-single/
Sounds amazing!
No me gusta. I do like the ''the bigger the better, the bigger the better'' part.
*YES*
Woah Nelly you killed it <3 The cover art is total stundogs as well.
So different to anything out there at the moment. I think it's fucking amazing.
But will it be a hit? You never know with Nelly. It can go either way.
I cannot wait for the album.
EVERYBODY SAY HEEEEEY
Radio 1 are premiering it on Fearne Cotton's show tomorrow morning.
My god this is some hot shit! Totally Nelly and not like anything the charts at the moment. Sounds like one of those songs though that either be a smash or a flop, as has been already said, you never can tell with Nelly.
Yeah agreed. I really can't decide whether this will do well or not. I f***ing love it now btw.
But I have a feeling there is MUCH better on the way. Can't wait.
Ahhh too good.
This is AMAZING! So different to everything else in the charts, but just so good.
Oh, my Nelly!
I don't think it's THAT good though. I think there will be a lot of "2006 and late" talks, as the sound is quite similar to her Timbaland work.
And also: it might flop quite hard or be a minor top-10 hit. I'll wait until the whole package (HQ + video) is revealed.
Oh God it's awesome.
However, please can we stop pissing around now and just have an HQ version already. The wait for this song is already too prolonged.
THE BIGGER THE BETTER. THE BIGGER THE BETTER. THE BIGGER THE BETTER. THE BETTER THE BIGGER.
On first listen I was a bit unsure. I thought it sounded a bit messy on the verses but I couldn't get the hook out of my head. After the second listen, I love it The HQ needs to be released now please.
In full and better quality:
This really is the JAM I've been waiting for.
My Nelly top 10:
1.Try
2.Say It Right
3.Explode
4.Forca
5.Maneater
6.Turn Off The Light
7.All Good Things (Come To An End)
8.Promiscuous
9.I'm Like A Bird
10.Fresh Off The Boat
That top 5 is nothing BUT 11/10 moments. Not sure about 'Big Hoops' yet... I'm sure I will be obsessed by then second play.
Its out in NZ
http://itunes.apple.com/nz/album/big-hoops-bigger-better-single/id518637353
this song is HOT
EDIT: Actually, I think its pre-order but oh well LOL
It's BRILLIANT. Maybe she actually could make a spectacular comeback afterall?
'I thought this song was over. No, it ain't over yet.'
This is much better than I was expecting. Obviously her pulling off a huge comeback would be AMAZING but I'm not gonna get my hopes up still. I could see this doing decently but we'll see.
I'm a bit ON THE FENCE to be honest you guyz. I mean I think the beat is FIRE as they do say in certain circles. I like the ATMOSPHERE, she brings that Nelly charm to the vocals... I just wish there was a bigger hook/chorus. It stops it being great. It also has shades of Not Myself Tonight for reasons I can't really explain. It feels very short once you take away the intro and outro. 8/10 anyway and if it just serves as a reintroduction to Nelly the world conquering popstar then I'm so ON BOARD.
I know I sound like a proper little gay fan boy (but its NELLY) but the stuff I've read online about this is strange. People are saying her voice has changed? That she is trying to put on an accent like Rihanna? Eh eh eh? Listen to most of Whoa Nelly and her voice has always been like this. A little bit gimmicky for want of a better word.
As for it doing well I'm not sure. Nelly isn't really the type of artist that has a loon/solid fanbase in my opinion. Not like the likes of GaGa, Britney etc. She goes away and people aren't really arsed for more. I think this will have a She-Wolf esque success.
EDIT>
LOL Tyler <3
HQ has totally altered my life. Roll on June 16th.
The press release is fabulous:
The song's been blocked everywhere I really love it, I wanna hear it again
This is absolutely BRILLIANT. What a comeback!
HOLY BEATS ON THIS.
I've got iTunes quality mp3 (well it's an AAC file) if anyone wants?
GOD YEAH LIL if that's okay xxx
HELL YES here too. I will still buy it when it's released so I figure it's fine. Plus I'd like to maximise on my rare moment of excitement for the release of a pop single.
Me too please Liam, if you don't mind
I'm not CRAZY about the song like most people here seem to be but I like it! Definitely infinitely better than Night Is Young anyway.
This is VERY GOOD.
I miss 2006.
I'm not crazy about this song. The reactions to it got me quite pumped for it (I was expecting some sort of second coming) but it fell rather flat. That said, it's certainly not BAD and I have never been a huge Nelly fan save for a few from her Timbaland era so I was probably expecting too much. I'd like to see her have a successful comeback.
Could someone send me a link plzz?
THIS IS AMAZING BTW. I l0v Nelly <3
me too please.
I'd love a download link too please!
Official Lyrics vid:
It's a grower for me but sounds good, but hope that she would've cut down the "bigger the better, the better the bigger" bits.
This is now a 9/10 and it ain't slowing down. Masterful use of autotune and vocal chopping ought to be complemented. Stunning production which does its worst to obliterate your speakers. Sly hooks buried in every part of the song which gradually unfold. What a comeback. It's always so lovely to hear evidence of a popstar's determination to be part of the big league.
It might have been posted but an image from the video:
*.*
Who would get the idea to use stelts for a vid.
Song has been growing on me although it's not as strong as Maneater, and the drum 'n bass part is a bit weak.
She BACK
I have iTunes mp4a quality of this track too, PM me if anyone wants.
Has this been released in the US yet?
Absolutely LOVING this. Wasn't actually that fussed on a comeback single from Nelly after she farted out that Greatest Hits and the terrible 'Night Is Young' but she's certainly back on form with a song strong enough to maybe have her ridiculously long break justified and not a big deal. At the end of the day if a song is good enough it will do well, and this most certainly is.
I think the idea is that she's on stilts, not that she's a giantess!
Why, have No Doubt put their album back another year again?
I'm looking forward to hearing the stuff she's done with Michael Angelakos. Nelly doing something like 'The Reeling' would be quite special.
This song is just perfect! i hope radio 1 add it soon!
Nelly never disappoints me and this is no exception
Impressed. Production is top stuff, great comeback.
This is now QUITE DEFINITELY MY JAM
I'm afraid I don't "get" this. :/
I'm sure it'll grow on me with a few more listens though...
I love this review and think it is amazingly true:
Spot on review
This tune is the sex. Cannot stop listening.
This needs to go to number on for 32 weeks
Is it getting a release and charting on iTunes? No sign of life so far...
Apparently it goes for adds on radio may 1st, to be fair does anyone apart from fans even know its out.
I'M IN LOVE.
Epic comeback. <3
I don't know if this is a blazingly obvious point, but there's like 20(?) 90's songs namechecked in the track, I wondered if that was DELIBERATIONS
Got this on loop at the moment
on first listen I didn't think it was all that, but it's growing on me VERY quickly. the more I hear it the more I begin to enjoy it.
Clip of new track 'Something, which features Nas':
That actually sounds better than Big Hoops for me, I do like Big Hoops but the accent brings it down a bit for me. This seems a more subtle track.
Good to see her back, undecided on the new material though.
There's a very enjoyable interview up on the Popjustice front page. This really made me sit up and go WHOA (Nelly!):
Rihanna has released five albums since ‘Loose’.
"Oh my god! That’s amazing."
(It's actually four but even so.)
This has now been elevated from 'quite good I suppose' to 'actually good, yes.' I'm unsure how it will do chart-wise still because I've not seen or heard any offline buzz about it at all but I do hope it is a hit.
Well Radio 1 c-listed it yesterday so things are on track! There'll also be a performance at the Billboard Music Awards this month. *.*
Standard // Deluxe
<3 <3
That font alone makes me squee <3
I think it could be a top 5 hit! I've got this feeling that it'll be a long runner with a #4 peak. It's weird how much of a grower it is, I used to hate it a couple of weeks ago but I just love it with every listen now
I see Big Hoops having a run more like Climax but a longrunning hit is possible too I guess!
Like that artwork very much. And the deluxe is better than the standard which is ALWAYS appreciated.
I really just can't predict this, it could literally be a massive hit but just as easily flop, I'm actually really looking forward to seeing how it does because it's not immediately obvious, mostly with big stars like this it's 'oh, obvious number 1 for 2+ weeks' but as usual Nelly isn't following!
You can watch a LQ version of the vid here http://nellyfurtadodaily.com/?p=5119
HQ on Vevo Monday.
One of the fastest growing songs I've ever witnessed - I hated it the first time I heard it, but now after having heard it 4 times it's a contender for #1 on my next personal chart
Did anyone read her popjustice interview?it didnt reveal much except there is a track called ''The Spirit Indestructible'' it was more about the making of the album and Rihanna.
'Something' sounds good, especially Nas' part. I hope it's also on the album and not just a b-side to 'Big Hoops'.
'Big Hoops' is #1 in the Dutch tip chart so it'll definitely enter the official top40 next week. It also entered the Dutch top100 at #81.
Video is wonderful even in LQ. I love what an idiosyncratic pop star this woman is. Trends, conforming, in the moment. All phrases that appear not to enter this woman's vocabulary.
Let us hope she has a hit in the bag.
Tracklist is out:
01 Spirit Indestructible

No big name rappers really (Nas is hardly Jay-Z), so again no conforming to the expected trends!
I'd say Nas is a pretty big name! I think his album Illmatic is pretty well known.
Would've liked to see more colabs with rappers but oh well.
A song named Bucket List? Hah!
Please no ballads on this one Nelly, don't need that from you. They kind of ruined Loose. I know Try was beautiful and possibly my favorite Nelly song but ballads just don't go on an album that has upbeats like Big Hoops.
Nas is a VERY big name! He might not be quite as relevant as he once was but he's still one of the biggest names in rap.
The Kenyan Boys Choir? Odd.
Is that that choir that ruined Afraid? I still need to hunt them down and smack them. I can only imagine how she was thinking : 'wow I have a great song with a MASSIVE guitar line, let's ruin it with a bunch of pre-teen boys singing the chorus'.
(They sounded like pre-teen boys to me)
In God's Hands was horrendous. I'll give you All Good Things and Say It Right (if that counts) though.
I wouldn't really call Nas a big name now. He's hardly relevant like, at all.
(They sounded like pre-teen boys to me)
Whatchachattin? Afraid is amazing start to end. Every second is 11/10. CHOIR & ALL.
I don't get why 'In God's Hands' is so hated, it's wonderful. Granted as a single it was a terrible choice and should've been left as a great album track, but still.
I love it.
Yeah it's a great video. A little schizophrenic maybe but she looks fly as hell in all the different setups.
Fantastic video! Love all the different looks from her!
brilliant!
Brilliant video, she looks amazing! The song has continued to grow on me, even though I loved it from the first listen!
She has an appearance on Alan Carr: Chatty Man next Friday - I'd guess performing and chatting, but if it's just one, it will most likely be just chatting.
1. Spirit Indestructible
2. Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)
3. High Life feat. Ace Primo
4. Parking Lot
5. Something feat. Nas
6. Bucket List
7. The Most Beautiful Thing feat. Sara Tavares
8. Waiting For the Night

14. End of the World
15. Don’t Leave Me
16. Be OK feat. Dylan Murray
17. Thoughts feat. The Kenyan Boys Choir
18. Thoughts (Tiesto Remix)
Pushed back to September.
Don't be silly. Tricky Stewart and Benny Blanco!
Can't say I'm surprised. As much as I love 'Big Hoops', it's not going to attract the attention a comeback needs.
Gutted. I was looking forward to blasting the album throughout summer.
Big Hoops is easily my favourite track of 2012 so far, and I love the video also. Top 10 in the UK with ease I think.
It's the VIP video of the week on some music channels, plus I've heard it on Capital which (along with being playlisted on Radio 1) is a good sign that it's going to get some good airplay!
She was really good on Alan Carr!
She's performing at the Billboard Music Awards tomorrow, wonder if it will help the song make an appearance on i-tunes.
The Alan Carr performance:
I am still not sure what I thought of it to be honest, I normally love Nelly's voice but it just seemed even more nasal than usual
Nelly is very hit and miss live but i thought it was good.
Shame it's been pushed back. Especially after already releasing the tracklist, it just wreaks of desperation!
Can't say I was too keen on her performance either. Still loving the song though! Loving the preview of Something (feat. Nas) as well.
I thought that performance was LESS nasal than on record! She sounded great. The tempo switch up in particular was quite the moment. I'm sure this is headed top 5 in the UK.
I actually really liked that performance. I agree that she actually sounded far less annoying than she does on the studio version in parts.
FABULOUS Billboard Awards perf --
AMAZING!
Brilliant performance. Hopefully it can shoot the song through the roof.
I was looking for that performance earlier on Twitter and majority of the comments are about her weight. Eh?
People are so fickle. Sure, she's curvier than when she promoted, say, "Loose" but she was bone thin then so it wouldn't be hard to be bigger than that? It's hardly the talking point of a pretty fantastic performance...
Amazing performance, shame it hasnt done much for it on Itunes but who cares at this point.
It sounds so much better live Has it helped the single in the US?
It's not even top 400 If that performance can't convince anyone to buy it then it really is doomed.
It's so strange that she hasn't managed to sell somewhat on name alone, regardless of what people think of the song.
Perhaps the record company will then say it's a "buzz" single and something else to be released later in the summer???...
I love Something! If the rest of the album is as good as this and Big Hoops, then its going to be amazing! Speaking of Big Hoops, it's stalled on iTunes at #15 which is a shame, I was hoping it could go top 10. But at least its gone top 20 somewhere!
Big Hoops video #2:
Yay for them not abandoning the 3 videos idea but if the third one is as blah as this then it all feels a bit pointless!
What an amateur video...
Surprised Big Hoops isn't going to drop loads this week seems to be sticking about for another week top 20
To be fair, the only release this week is Cheryl really ... pretty much everything will be sticking.
Well this just got its first play on radio, I have to admit compared to the live version its nothing special. I know she has always had a nasally voice but its like shes trying to be non understandable on these new tracks. Maybe I will get into it but so far I cant say Im a fan which is a shame as I loved Big Hoops.
Edit: I pray the horse at the end was just part of the radio station putting a noise on the end, not part of the song.
The best quality so far is here:
http://soundcloud.com/jaacck/spiritindestructible
I am quite liking it so far though but from what I can tell it has nothing on 'Big Hoops', I need to hear an HQ though before I can properly judge.
I really like it actually. Her voice is still a bit grating but it's not anywhere near as annoying as it is on Big Hoops so I don't mind. I think it will be really, really good in HQ.
I fail to see how that's gonna do anything if 'Big Hoops' couldn't smash it.
I still can't get enough of that song, it just never gets old. Deserved more.
sounds awesome
I'm not rly a fan of the song but that video was so cute to watch
This is going to bomb so hard.
I'm still waiting for that huge smash hit to erase her last 6 years of nothingness, which everybody assured me this era would bring.
Sounds much better in HQ however I thought her voice sounded nasal on Big Hoops but this is much worse. I am hoping it does well, although I would be majorly surprised if it did, I can see a #38 smash coming her way.
The production is infuriatingly dire. It sounds like a cheap demo. The melody is there but everything else is godawful.
It took a couple of days but TSI has really grown, I actually much prefer it to Big Hoops which I quickly went off of. The first 50 seconds or so is awfully clunky though with the different instrumental and that, also no way will this be a hit.
I'm still waiting for the proper amazing stuff I know she's easily capable of, 'really good' isn't enough tbh.
Really don't like 'The Spirit Indestructable'. It doesn't seem to go anywhere at all while it seems to be dragging on forever.
It also looks like she's tried to pick every cheesy line that she could find and put it together in a song.
I just echo everyone else, it's so boraaaang and clunky
People wanted a 'Folklore' out of this album, but I'd rather she did another commercial album like 'Loose' (which she absolutely shined on) if this is the best she's gon do
Amazing video. Made me so emotional
I don't care what y'all say here, this song is AMAZEBALLS even if production isn't that good.
I just want her to make another Loose really. I know that makes me a Bad Nelly Fan but it's what I want from her. Whether Timbo is capable of making stuff of that quality right now though, I don't know.
I'm actually quit the fan of Spirit Indestructible! I don't like the opening but it gets going after that and is growing on me quite quickly!
My main problem is it gets going just to slow right back down after one upbeat verse and chorus, its too messy.
Yikes.
HOLY DULL
She looks bloody awful in the mountain scenes. The whole things just choppy and inconsistent, its a shame really I feel like if she was going to comeback and flop I would at least want it to be with non-comercial beautiful singles...this however...is just bad all round.
I quite like the video actually, it's pretty and mountain scenes are always a good thing if you ask me. The song is growing to an extent but it still feels very unfortunate. There's a good song in there but they haven't utilised it properly.
Oh dear, the video is pretty disappointing...
I do actually really like the song though, even with the faults (ie the production). It's really gonna bomb though, like seriously it'll end up doing worse than Big Hoops and that was a flop and a half. Idk, it's not a bad song at all it's just with all the wait she needs something much better to appeal to everyone again and get a hit, this just doesn't have 'it'.
Lord have mercy. 'Spirit' stinks. Even the nasal bothers me. How can they think releasing the album on the back of this is a good idea?
She evidently shouldn't have been allowed so much creative control.
I do like the song and I think it does have huge potential there somewhere. But her voice isn't particularly nice to listen to with these two latest tracks. What happened with her voice on the tracks? It just sounds so... hollow. I know that quite often some sort of layering thing is used (like on Morning After Dark). I can't see Spirit Indestructible doing big things to be honest, which is a shame bearing in mind how popular she was at one point. (My favourites of her tracks being I'm Like A Bird, All Good Things and Say It Right.)
I don't really get why they delayed the album thinking this would do better than 'Big Hoops', I could feasibly see it even missing the top 100.
It's an alright song, but it does not sound at all like a hit and as for that video...
I don't like the way she sings lately, it's like she has a peg on her nose, she used to so much better than this.
The lovely beautiful Nelly.
I adored Loose these 2 singles have done nothing for me, hoops was about a load of old nothing and this one is hardly exciting hate to say it but think shes left it too long, not only that the material just isnt up to scratch shes capable of so much better imo.
I'm loving 'Spirit Indestructible', much better than 'Big Hoops' which has never quite clicked with me (however it has grown). The video is really good too! This deserves to do really well, but I don't think it will do!
I do love Nelly ballads though, this, 'All Good Things', 'Try', 'Forca' and 'Powerless' are all great! 'Powerless' is more of a mid-tempo, but oh well it is probably my favourite Nelly song along with 'All Good Things'!
a slight improvementon the previous single, her voice does seem to have got worse though
I have no idea why she chose to utilize her nasty nasal tone...
Apparently Parking Lot is going to be the second single in the US...when really it should be worldwide. Sounds amazingly catchy:
http://music.aol.com/sessions/nelly-furtado-parking-lot-sessions/
That actually sounds like a better single choice, I still have faith in the album to be honest - I can see this being one of those horifically handled eras with sub-par single choices a la Bionic. If nothing else it's certainly gonna flop that bad!
"The Spirit Indestructible" is one of her best singles. What is with all the hate? Just because it lacks a dance beat and Pitbull, clearly.
I actually don't mind The Spirit Indestructible (I even prefer it to Big Hoops which I don't rate at all), it is an awful single choice though no matter how you look at it, the production is the main fault really.
Much as I dislike Big Hoops, it was a much better and more commercial choice of single (and that it did much for it ), and the same can be said for Parking Lots by the sounds of things.
I definitely agree that 'Parking Lot' is a stronger song/single sounding track than 'The Spirit Indestructible'. It's pretty strong and has catchiness, funkiness.
I do like 'The Spirit Indestrictible', but there's no way it sounds like a hit whatsoever.
i cant say there are too many nelly furtado albums i havent enjoyed
Have we heard the studio version of Parking Lot?
WHY wasn't this the first single? That's huge.
The Spirit Indestructible just properly clicked with me, I think she's going down quite a similar path to Jessie Ware, Jess Mills etc, which is just Dandy*.
Parking Lot sounds OK but I agree with whoever said it was kind of conventional.
Parking Lot sounds like the bigger hit, but I much prefer The Spirit Indestructible. PL is catchy but it's annoyingly so, I can see me going right off it if I listen to it too much.
R.I.P NELLY
WHAT?!
Shes not DEAD. But her career is seemingly. Even I cant force myself to like Spirit!
http://soundcloud.com/igapromotion/nelly-furtado-parking-lot
If this really is the radio edit then she deserves to flop, like why do her songs from this era sound so good live, but so shit as a studio version.
I'm trynna get into her this time around, but I CAN'T. Something is missing, it's so bizarre seeing someone be so massive to struggle to release an album. I bet she's kicking herself for not taking full advantage of 'Loose'.
What a joke. She's over.
Pre-order cancelled :/
It's an utter disaster. She's putting out pop music here that nobody wants, it's totally bereft of character, presence or even thought?
It all feels out of date too D:
I can only echo what's already been said. 'Big Hoops' took a while to grow on me but it did in the end, but 'Spirit Indestructable', 'Parking Lot' and 'Something' to a lesser extent are just total non-events. I know she got alot of criticism when she ''sold out'' with 'Loose' but at least the material was still worth sticking up for. I would tell her to get her ass back in the studio with Timbo but he seems to have lost his way as well.
Sigh...if only she released something sooner after Loose maybe she'd still have some relevancy today...Parking Lot was the only thing i've heard so far (based on that live performance) that sounded promising but now that i've heard the studio version...its just not that great, can't see it going anywhere. Its a shame she's having so much trouble getting a hit again, at this rate she'd have to team up with someone like Rihanna, Beyonce or David Guetta in order to have success.
There's talk that, that version might just be a backing track....we can only hope. I honestly dont know what her team are doing, like are they just going to release the album in a month without another single being released in America or the UK.
I agree, she should have definitely had the second single out to radio by now. This era has been terrible so far.
Total Jumping Trains vibes here, she's left it far too late. I know that they just want to have a successful era but the longer they leave it the more of a flop it'll be, so they may as well just get it out there for the fans as planned!
Or you know they could've just handled it properly in the first place but since when was that ever an option?
The date has come from iTunes, its just been added
Pahaha this cant be serious?
I actually wouldn't be surprised if her interest in this whole era is so low now that she's not even appearing on her own artwork.
I'm pretty sure that's real as it's on her facebook and i assume twitter page along with the full version of the song...sounds the same as the one uploaded the other day just longer.
I'm all about Parking Lot. Its very M.I.A. though. The album is going to perform terribly but I hope for at least a decent couple of songs.
*.*
Not even that can make me like Nelly this era.
Best thing she's done all era tbh.
Always good quality from this girl
I really like that! Whatever it is.
Leaked!
LEAKY LEAK.
Circles is wonderful.
Everyone is going to love Waiting for the Night though.
They were my favourite two clips. I'll give this a listen tonight. If I can salvage a six track EP out of it I'll be happy. ish.
I love Bucket List already. Can't wait to listen to the rest.
MIRACLES
The album's okay... first half is terribly produced on the whole. Circles and Believers are the two big highlights, most of the rest is pretty but forgettable.
I'm looking forward to the bonus tracks all being available, for me so far the highlights are Big Hoops, Enemy and Believers. This seems like a Bionic situation where Nelly/Christina recorded an album they loved but it wasn't necessarily what the label wanted so they drafted in Darkchild/Paolo to produce a few singles for it.
I can't even be arsed to download the album anymore
Circles and Believers are good. The rest are either weak or ruined by terrible production.
Oh well. Folklore 4 life.
Not a bad album (compared to what I expected), in fact there are a few very good tracks, but my god this is gonna flop harder than Bionic and Heartbreak On Hold surely (I'm talking like 20k total sales, that pessimistic) there is literally NO hype at all or anything, I doubt anyone even knows it's out!
There's a few songs I like, It's not as bad as I thought I'd be. Bucket List and Circles are my favourites.
My favourites are:
Waiting For The Night
High Life
Bucket List
And Circles is quickly growing.
And Big Hoops and Parking Lot remain brilliant.
The bonus tracks are VERY in vein of "Whoa! Nelly!".
Bucket List needs to be a single.
Circles is so Passion Pit doing Folklore. I can't get enough of it.
what is this?
Why is she singing "Big Hoops" when she as a new song coming out soon?
I love how she lowered herself to Red Or Black in desperation, and then does a months old single!!!
I don't see how doing Red or Black is any more desperate than doing Chatty Man, Graham Norton's show or whatever else personally. I'm sure the record company dictated to her which song to sing and it's obvious they don't have any kind of strategy whatsoever now.
I get the impression the label let her go away and record this album without any interference, only to realise when she delivered it that it contained no hits. I think the best thing she can do is move swiftly on to album number six with some carefully engineered A&R to ensure she has the hits in place.
On another note the album is a huge grower. If you'd have told me a month ago this would be better than P!nk's effort I'd have told you to fuck me gently with a chainsaw.
Bucket List and Waiting for the Night should've been the first two singles. Too late now though!
She performed 'Big Hoops' on Red Or Black?
As much as it's 100 times better than her current single, this campaign gets even more laughable. Jark's right, no strategy whatsoever. Maybe her record company (or her) have realised that it won't get any better than 'Big Hoops' this era and decided to cling on to that for dear life.
I love this album! Probably my favourite of the year so far.
01 End Game
02 Spirit Indestructible
03 Waiting For The Night
04 Big Hoops
05 Believers (Arab Spring)
Waiting For The Night 100% should have been the lead single, followed by Spirit Indestructible.
What a flop. Shame.
Hmm, I bought the deluxe version today but Big Hoops seems to finish abruptly at 3:47 when the iTunes store page for the album lists it as 3:52 in length so it seems like there's a few seconds missing from the end of the song... unless iTunes have it wrong lol or whether it's meant to sound like that or not I don't know but it doesn't sound like the end of the song. Just wondered if that was the same for anyone else? (I have OCD when it comes to things like this haha).
Nice album though. Spirit Indestructible, Parking Lot, Waiting for the Night and End of the World are my favourites so far. Like Miracles, Circles and Believers too.
I've just heard Parking Lot for the first time (watched the video) - DEAR GOD what a tuneless DRONE of a song, literally no hook or melody AT ALL.
No flash Ray Kay video can disguise a piss poor song.
I like "Parking Lot".
her voice must be on first places
I actually really like Parking Lot and the video is fine but I just can't understand why they even made it. Are they even bothering to put it on iTunes, send it for radio adds??
I like the video, but it hasn't done much for the song. It's not awful but it's just quite annoying and not much more than just OK, she needs a LOT more than this to be honest but obviously it doesn't really matter because this era is 99% dead sadly.
Love the song. Like the video. Just wish it were a little less busy because it looked like there were some quite nice shots in there.
#34 in the midweeks, oh dear
WHOA, NELLY!
Oh dear. (@ John + Nelly).
Waiting for the Night is so god damn maximal. Somebody at her label really hates her.
This whole project was just DOA really, wasn't it.
I'm not sure I've ever seen somebody commit career suicide on such an epic level before, except maybe Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
I just CAN'T understand how Loose being SO massive hasn't helped anything she released afterwards. It's bizarre, you'd expect SOME sort of 'comeback' boost, but there hasn't been any at all. DOA doesn't even begin, her career's been a disaster since the day Loose era ended.
It's her own fault really for not capitalising on her success with the Loose era since then, attempting a proper comeback 6 years down the line isn't really going to do anything for her.
I suppose it's kind of astonishing when you consider back then she had the same sort of status someone like Katy Perry has now.
I can't at people abhorring The Spirit Indestructible (single) so much. I think it's very inspiring and new and so much different from everything she's ever done.
The latter half of the album is pretty decent (although not very memorable), the first half is not. I like ''Waiting for the Night'' (why isn't that just called ''Day and Night''?) and ''Bucket List'' the most.
''High Life'' is ATROCIOUS. Her voice is on that song is like nails on a chalkboard. Especially in the ''La la la la la la'' parts. If ''Spirit Indestructible'' (song) had a decent hook then I might have been able to look past the bad production, but alas not. ''Parking Lot'' is just dull. ''Something'' is kind of cool thanks to Nas.
I expected more from the Remi productions to be honest, I mean for God's sake he's produced half of the ''Back to Black'' album, I don't know what went wrong here.
My favourite tracks:
Spirit Indestructible
Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)
High Life
Waiting for the Night
Circles
Enemy
End of the World
Cry
Starlight
Soak It Up
That's basically an album! and the rest of the songs pretty decent too!
It's done her no favours whatsoever by taking 6 years to release a follow-up - Christina even suffered after taking just 4 years in comparison.
Oh well, let's hope Fergie delivers after 7.
The class of '06 aren't translating well into the Teenies are they?
I have created my own tracklisting for this:
1. Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)
2. Something (ft. Nas)
3. Waiting For The Night
4. End Game
5. Spirit Indestructible
6. Miracles
7. Bucket List
8. End Of The World
9. Circles
10. Enemy
11. Believers (Arab Spring)
It works so much better in this format. If that was the tracklisting I would actually think it was a very good album. 'Parking Lot' and 'High Life' bring it down a lot.
Something as the second song, really? it's awful, such a mood killer. And you removed (the gorgeous) The Most Beautiful Thing!
Enters at #41 in the Dutch album chart
46 Nelly Furtado 2,637
Pitiful. I understand the lack of promotion, bad single choices and such but how can you go from a million selling album to this, Heartbreak On Hold is no longer the biggest flop of this year.
'Something' is one of the best!
Top five for me:
01 Miracles
02 Bucket List
03 Something
04 Believers (Arab Spring)
05 Circles
Misses the Top 50 in the USA, about 6k sales...
Fabulous. Even the latest ALANIS MORISSETTE album opened with about 35k.
I don't even think this era can be called a 'flop' to be honest, as it really insults the other artists eras which have been labeled as such. I don't even think there is a name for THAT.
#79 in the US with 5,731 sold. #18 in Canada - that feels almost worse.
This is getting embarrassing now...
Heartbreak On Hold suddenly looks like 21! That's just awful, going from an album selling over 10 million copies to one selling under 6k in one week in the US, like Davidson said, flop genuinely is not the word here it's just unbelieveable to be honest.
I hate to say it, but I've never seen a well established star do so badly before. I can't think of the last time a once massive star sold SO little?!
This will barely do 50k worldwide in the end...
That could actually be a good thing. Most people won't even know she's had an album out so she won't be considered a flop.
Debuts at #3 in Germany behind 2 new entries
Well at least it's a hit somewhere
Yay. At least HoH isn't the biggest failure this year :3
Incurring such a huge flop can only make her bounce back better in the future is all we can hope for, that said, UK wise her greatest hits flopped and now this so its almost like she has been totally forgotten about. However she managed a top 20 single which is something Madonna did not manage with her last era so there is hope for the future, but i think this era is just dead for her now.
Parking Lot is the single that might save it she just needs to promote it.....
I dont like Parking Lot at all. Much prefer the other 2 singles
Waiting for the Night is the next European single. Going to German radio soon. Not that it will do anything at all in the UK of course.
Gutted at how badly this album has done, I absolutely love it! The three singles, High Life, Bucket List, The Most Beautiful Thing, Waiting For The Night and Be OK are all varying shades of excellent. It's almost up there with Loose for me quality wise. Granted it's not as commerical by a long stretch but it didn't deserve such little success.
Despite this album and whole campaign being a complete mess. There are some really good gems on this album. She could have made a very solid ten track album from what's on there. It's a shame! I'm LOVING 'Hold Up', probably my favourite currently!
its such a shame about this whole project, i was so amped for it but the delays and hideous least single even the front cover is a none event! at least we still have the marvel that is loose :-)
It has a real classic sound to it, a sound that’s really authentic, super soulful,” says Nelly.
This girl just keeps making videos for all my favourite songs on TSI!
Bucket List
and here's Waiting for the Night that hasn't been posted here
Shame this flopped...it actually has some good songs on the album!
