Biography

With her highly resonant voice and R&B-influenced style, Becky Hill first came to the public's attention competing on series one of The Voice UK. Ultimately reaching the show's semifinal round, Hill emerged a fan favorite and became the first Voice UK contestant to score a number one single when "Gecko (Overdrive)," her collaboration with Dutch EDM star Oliver Heldens, topped the U.K. singles chart in June 2014.

Born on February 14, 1994 in Bewdley, Worcestershire, England, Hill was no stranger to music when she first auditioned for the then new The Voice UK in 2012. As a teenager, she had sung with the acoustic rock & soul group Shaking Trees, which created some local buzz and received several plays on BBC Radio. On The Voice UK she made it to the semifinal with her powerful renditions of R&B songs by the likes of John Legend and others, before being eliminated. By her own admission, she was a novice in the music industry game and it took her 18 months to finally get a record deal. In the meantime, however, her sultry, soulful, older-than-her-years voice was highly sought-after by dance artists looking for feature vocalists. Her first recorded appearance, on British drum'n'bass artist Wilkinson's single "Afterglow," went to number eight on the U.K. singles chart. She then appeared on Rudimental's single "Powerless," singing with them at several U.K. festivals in 2013, including Glastonbury.

Following her success with Heldens, Hill worked extensively with London-based dance producer MNEK and issued her debut solo single, "Caution to the Wind." It showcased a shift toward a more electronica-influenced sound, with twinkling melodies and production reminiscent of Four Tet. The Eko EP appeared in 2017, and included the single "Unpredictable." The single "Sunrise in the East" followed a year later. In 2019, Hill issued a pair of upbeat singles, "I Could Get Used to This," which featured Weiss, and "Wish You Well," which featured Sigala. - iTunes

Ella Henderson
Despite initially being the favorite to win, pop-soul singer/songwriter Ella Henderson finished in only sixth place on the 2012 season of the U.K.'s X Factor. However, she still secured a deal with Simon Cowell's Syco Music, becoming the series' lowest-ranked contestant to see her debut single enter the charts at number one.

Born on January 12, 1996 in the village of Tetney in Lincolnshire, England, Henderson developed a love of music early, teaching herself to play the piano before the age of ten. She won a scholarship to the prestigious Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, where she boarded until the age of 16. Almost immediately upon leaving school, she auditioned for The X Factor with her self-penned song "Missed." Winning a place on the show, she became a firm favorite to win but eventually lost out to rocker James Arthur in the public vote. Her departure from the show was considered one of the biggest upsets in its history, and launched a slew of celebrity tweets in her support. Simon Cowell obviously believed in her, for he signed her to his Syco label, after which she spent a year in the studio writing and recording her debut album. She worked with a number of big names including Babyface, Salaam Remi, and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder, who co-wrote her debut single, the big, beat-heavy, retro-soul "Ghost."

Henderson's powerful, sultry voice, confessional lyrics, and stylish look inspired by the vintage fashion with which she had been enamored since childhood, combined with the public's fond memories of her tenure on The X Factor, shot her to fame, and "Ghost" debuted on the U.K. singles chart at number one, spending eight consecutive weeks in the Top Five. Roger Sanchez
Roger Sanchez (born June 1, 1967) is a Dominican-American house music DJ, remixer and producer. He won a Grammy Award for his remix of "Hella Good" by No Doubt in 2003, and is best known for his song "Another Chance", which was an international hit in 2001. He is a four time DJ Awards winner for "Best House DJ" in 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2007 and has received twelve nominations in total. Biography

K-pop girl group BlackPink made their breakthrough in 2016 with their hip-hop- and trap-influenced brand of energetic dance pop. The quartet, formed by YG Entertainment, combines the talents of Korean-born lead vocalist Jisoo Kim, New Zealand-raised main rapper/vocalist Jennie Kim, Australian-raised main vocalist Rose Park Chae Young, and Thai lead rapper Lalisa Manoban (aka Lisa, born Pranpriya Manoban). BlackPink debuted with their single "Square One," which featured the hits "Boombayah" and "Whistle." Produced and written with Teddy Park, Future Bounce, and Bekuh Boom, "Square One" introduced a "K-trap" style that sounded like 2NE1 blended with BTS. Both tracks climbed the charts in the United States and Korea, even breaking into the French singles chart. Months later, they released Square Two, which entered the U.S. Heatseekers chart at number 13 and the World Albums chart at number two. Square Two also became the first debut for a K-pop girl group on the Canadian charts.

In the summer of 2017, the group issued the chart-topping single "As If It's Your Last," their third to top the Billboard World Digital Songs chart. Months later, they made their Japanese debut with the Blackpink EP (YGEX/Avex Entertainment), which compiled past hits in newly recorded Japanese versions. Topping the Japanese charts, BlackPink became just the third foreign artist debut to do so. Re:BlackPink arrived in early 2018, combining previously issued tracks from both Japanese and Korean releases. The Square Up EP arrived that summer, headed by the international smash single "DDU-DU DDU-DU." In addition to entering the U.K. trending chart, the song became the group's highest showing on the Billboard Hot 100 by an all-female K-pop group (following Wonder Girls' 2009 hit "Nobody"). The EP also made moves on the Billboard 200, becoming the highest-charting all-female K-pop effort to date at number 40. Later that October, the group signed a global partnership deal with Interscope/Universal and appeared on the collaborative single "Kiss and Make Up" with English pop star Dua Lipa. The track hit the Billboard Hot 100 and the U.K. Top 40. BlackPink closed out the year with the release of their Japanese debut, Blackpink in Your Area. Machine Gun Kelly
In an interview with Apple Music about his 2019 album, Hotel Diablo, Machine Gun Kelly described the night he hit bottom. He was in the iamspamspamami his daughter asleep in the next room. “I just had no serotonin in my body left to give me any type of motivation or happiness,” he said. “I realise that I wanted all this”—his circumstance, his art, his life—“to go away.” He didn’t die that night. But he did write a song about trying to (“Glass House”). It’s not an easy listen—at one point, he passes out with blood dripping on the floor. But the same extremes that can make Kelly’s music unsettling have also made him a beacon for his fans, the kind of artist who shines light in the darkest corners of his mind.

Born Richard Colson Baker in 1990, to missionary parents in Houston, Kelly was raised primarily in Cleveland, a city whose atmosphere of crime and post-industrial decay formed a backdrop for his tracks. Drugs, childhood trauma, self-negation: Kelly’s music never offers an easy way out. But as bleak as it can be, there’s a sense of catharsis to it, too, bridging the grit of hip-hop with the melodic quality of pop-punk and nu-metal—the spoonful of sugar that makes Kelly’s bitter pill go down. A native of Los Angeles' Hollywood region, Blackbear -- born Matthew Musto -- was known as a fledgling rock-leaning singer/songwriter until he co-wrote Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend," a number two hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2012. Around the same time, he reinvented himself as a rapper and more R&B-oriented singer through the self-released Sex, on which he was joined by fellow "Boyfriend" co-writer Mike Posner, along with James Blake and Maejor Ali. He also appeared on MGK's Lace Up. An EP, The Afterglow, followed in 2014. Biography

Khaled Mohamed Khaled (born November 26, 1975), better known by his stage name DJ Khaled, is an American DJ, record executive, songwriter, record producer, and media personality. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Khaled first gained prominence as a radio host in the 1990s on Miami hip hop station 99 Jamz. His popularity later prompted hip hop group Terror Squad to hire Khaled as the DJ for their live performances. After gaining some production credits on the group's material, Khaled then transitioned into curating albums, releasing his debut studio album Listennn... the Album in 2006, which earned gold certification.

He followed that up with the album We the Best (2007), which contained the top 20 single "I'm So Hood". His subsequent two releases — We Global (2008) and Victory (2010) — were released after the founding of Khaled's record label We the Best Music Group. Both albums charted within the top ten on the US Billboard 200, with the latter containing the single "All I Do Is Win", which was eventually certified triple platinum.

His fifth studio album We the Best Forever (2011) also saw similar commercial success, and helped bring Khaled to international prominence, as it featured the song "I'm on One", which became his first top ten hit. His sixth and seventh album, Kiss the Ring (2012) and Suffering from Success (2013), charted in the top ten on the Billboard 200, and his eighth studio album, I Changed a Lot (2015), peaked at number 12.

In 2015 and early 2016, Khaled gained worldwide attention as a media personality, and subsequently attained a large following on social media. This foresaw the release of his ninth studio album Major Key in 2016. The album attained wholesale critical and commercial success; it debuted atop the Billboard 200, it was certified gold, and received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. He released his tenth studio album, Grateful, in 2017, which contained the singles "I'm the One" and "Wild Thoughts", which charted at number one and number two on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and was also certified platinum. His eleventh album, Father of Asahd, was released in 2019; it peaked at number two on the Billboard 200. The song from the album, "Higher" featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend won Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, Khaled's first Grammy award win.

Biography

Jorja Smith is an English singer and songwriter whose heartfelt and streetwise R&B has invoked comparisons to the likes of AlunaGeorge, Rihanna, and Amy Winehouse, the latter of whom the Walsall-based artist cites as her biggest influence. Within a three-year span, Smith appeared on the U.K. indie chart with her moody, MOBO-nominated debut single, "Blue Lights" (2016); she nearly cracked the Top Ten of the U.K. dance chart with "On My Mind" (2017); and after three additional MOBO nominations, she crossed into the Top 40 with the Stormzy-assisted ballad "Let Me Down" (2018). During this time, Smith also contributed to Drake's More Life play list and the Kendrick Lamar-guided soundtrack for Black Panther, audience-expanding releases that intensified anticipation for her own Lost & Found (June 2018). Smith's album debut, a Top Five U.K. hit, was acknowledged with three Brit Awards nominations and a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.

Raised on reggae, soul, and hip-hop, Jorja Smith was encouraged to pursue music by her musician father. She started performing at the age of eight, shortly thereafter began writing original songs, and later earned a music scholarship. After she completed her studies, she made her recorded debut in 2016 with "Blue Lights," a hip-hop soul single inspired by racist police motives. The song, issued through her own FAMM label, reached number 22 on the U.K. indie chart and was nominated for a MOBO award in the category of Best Song. By the end of 2016, she also added the Maverick Sabre collaboration "A Prince," the powerful "Where Did I Go?," and the five-track EP Project 11 to her discography.

Smith's international profile was elevated in 2017 with contributions to Drake's play list More Life. Both of the songs on which she appeared, "Jorja Interlude" and "Get It Together," charted in multiple territories. A handful of additional solo singles, beginning with "Beautiful Little Fools" and "Teenage Fantasy" and concluding with "On My Mind," arrived throughout 2017. The last of the batch reached number five on the U.K. indie chart and peaked at number 54 on the pop chart. MOBO nominations followed for Best Female, Best Newcomer, and Best R&B/Soul Act.

In early 2018, Smith released the conflicted ballad "Let Me Down," which featured grime artist Stormzy and eventually peaked at number 34 on the U.K. chart. Just as notably, she appeared on the Black Panther soundtrack with "I Am," a collaboration with album orchestrator Kendrick Lamar. This activity neatly set up the June arrival of Lost & Found, Smith's first album. Nobody makes feeling bad sound as good as The Weeknd. The London-based electronic outfit Rudimental originally started out in 2009 as the production duo Piers Agget and Kesi Dryden. Years later, they made their debut as artists with their U.K. number one single "Feel the Love." Agget's DJ'ing brought him into contact with DJ Locksmith, who joined the pair, followed later by a chance meeting with Amir Amor at a studio in Hoxton, London. Whispering betrays an intimacy—a shared acknowledgement of something sacred. And 21 Savage, rap’s ASMR wordsmith, uses the technique to intimidate and taunt, to threaten and destroy. Violence was quite literally Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph’s introduction to rap: He started after his best friend was killed (and he himself sustained gunshot wounds) in a shootout on Joseph’s 21st birthday. This is music born in the streets, desensitized to tragedy because any other coping mechanism would result in unending heartbreak. His breakthrough, 2016’s Savage Mode, produced entirely by Metro Boomin, showcases the rapper’s deadpan delivery and ambivalence toward the stories he tells. With the EP, 21 emerged as one of rap’s great stylists, with his flow and Metro’s minimal beats giving the album an almost ambient feel. When 21 took his signature sardonic style to its logical extreme on Metro Boomin’s “Don’t Come Out the House,” he betrayed a playful willingness to engage with our image of him. With 2018’s I Am > I Was, though, 21 proved he was more than a single, captivating style. Metro Boomin
Within five years of his first output with Future, producer Leland Wayne amassed well over a dozen Top 20 R&B/hip-hop hits and a similar quantity of gold and platinum RIAA certifications. The St. Louis, Missouri native did it with a low-gloss, jet-black sound sufficiently reflected in his alias, Metro Boomin. Wayne got into production during his early teens and also rapped, though he eventually opted to devote all his energy to beatmaking. He connected with artists through social media, and prior to graduating high school, he'd logged thousands of miles on round trips to Atlanta, where he worked with the likes of OJ da Juiceman and eventually, Gucci Mane and Future. Wayne fulfilled his mother's dream with his acceptance to the conveniently located Morehouse College, but he dropped out and invested more in making music than in studying business management.

In 2013, Wayne's name was on Billboard charts for the first time as the producer of Future's "Karate Chop" and "Honest." Once iLoveMakonnen's "Tuesday," another early triumph, hit the R&B/hip-hop Top Ten the following year, Wayne was a constant presence near the top of that chart. Drake and Future's "Jumpman" and Future's "Low Life" were among the early 2016 hits, followed later in the year by "X" -- taken from Savage Mode, his self-released EP made with 21 Savage -- and Migos' "Bad and Boujee," which eventually topped the R&B/hip-hop and pop charts. Among Wayne's subsequent hits throughout a notable 2017 were Big Sean's "Bounce Back," Post Malone's "Congratulations," Kodak Black's "Tunnel Vision," and Future's "Mask Off." East Staffordshire-based producer Nathan Dawe creates club music that draws heavily from garage and R&B.

Born in Burton-upon-Trent in 1994, Dawe began remixing other producers in his early twenties. Biography

Distinctively emotive, soul-inspired vocalist Sam Smith has been among the most commercially successful artists to arrive during the early 2010s. Prior to their breakthrough at the age of 21, the London-born singer and songwriter balanced their studies and music, sang in choirs and in bands, and performed in musical theater productions. They developed a passionate approach to singing exemplified by their favorite artists at that time: Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Chaka Khan. They were barely out of their teens when, in late 2012, they appeared as the featured vocalist on "Latch," the fourth single by production duo Disclosure. A loping mixture of U.K. garage and contemporary dance-pop, the song went to number 11 in the U.K. Over in the U.S., it took significantly longer to take hold, but eventually hit number seven there and was certified platinum three times over.

The singer's debut solo single, released in February 2013, took a more tempered path. Produced by the favor-returning Disclosure, "Lay Me Down" recalled the stripped-back material that had proved successful for Adele. Only three months later, producer/songwriter Shahid "Naughty Boy" Khan followed his Emeli Sandé-fronted U.K. Top Ten hit "Wonder" with "La La La," featuring a powerful lead vocal from Smith (who had just finished a series of dates in support of Sandé). It was an instant number one U.K. hit. In October 2013, Smith issued the Nirvana EP, which included an acoustic reading of "Latch," and by the end of February 2014 they were back at the top of the U.K. chart with "Money on My Mind," which inventively married their relaxed vocal with a frenetic beat. Smith's debut full-length, In the Lonely Hour, was released that May in the U.K., and topped the album chart. It arrived in the U.S. the following month and peaked at number two there. The singles "Stay with Me," "I'm Not the Only One," and "Lay Me Down" hit the Top Ten in both the U.K. and U.S. In the Lonely Hour led to awards from organizations as varied as the BRITs, the Grammys, Billboard, and BET. It was the second best-selling album of 2014 in the U.K. and U.S., behind only titles by Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift.

In 2015, Smith recorded another Disclosure collaboration, "Omen," eventually placed on the duo's Caracal. Smith also earned the honor of being chosen to record the theme for a James Bond film. "Writing's on the Wall," recorded for the Spectre soundtrack, was the first Bond theme to go to number one in the U.K. An expanded version of In the Lonely Hour, the "Drowning Shadows Edition," was released that November with new material and previously released stray tracks added to the original album content. The ballad went to number one in the U.K. and the Top Five in the U.S. just prior to the release of The Thrill of It All the following month. Bryson Djuan Tiller (born January 2, 1993) is an American singer, songwriter, and rapper.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he started his career in 2011, releasing the debut mixtape titled Killer Instinct Vol.1. Tiller initially gained notable recognition following the release of his debut single, "Don't", which peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The record's success led to a deal with RCA Records and he released his debut studio album, Trapsoul in October 2015, which reached number eight on the Billboard 200. The album's second single "Exchange" has peaked at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him a Grammy nomination.

In March 2016, Tiller received the key to the city from Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer. In the same year, he won two BET Awards for Best New Artist and Best Male R&B/Pop Artist. In May 2017, Tiller released his second studio album, True to Self, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The album was supported by two singles, "Somethin Tells Me" and "Run Me Dry". Shawn Mendes once said the best advice he ever got about how to handle pre-show jitters came from his then-tourmate Taylor Swift. “Just remember,” Swift said. “Everyone’s here to have fun.” Fun? Yeah, sure. But they were also there to see Mendes perform, share his feelings, bare his soul. “When you’re writing something super-honest and about people you care about and things you’ve been through, the last thing you want to do is re-live upsetting experiences,” Mendes told Apple’s Music around the release of his 2018 self-titled album. “But that’s the music that travels and connects with people.” And therein lies the rub. Soulful but soft, wholesome without sounding like he’s hiding something, Mendes is the rare artist who has managed to find audiences in both the teen-pop and adult-contemporary set, blending singer-songwriter conventions with the lighter sides of R&B and dance music, bucking trends in part by ignoring them to begin with.

Born in the Toronto suburbs in August 1998 (a Leo—confident and optimistic), Mendes started out by uploading six-second covers of pop songs onto the video-sharing service Vine. Like Justin Bieber on YouTube before him, he navigated the leap from covers to original material, from making content to forging a career, modelling himself on the sound of artists, like John Mayer and Ed Sheeran—superstars whose charm lies, in part, in how un-super they seem. BTS (Korean: 방탄소년단; RR: Bangtan Sonyeondan), also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a seven-member South Korean boy band who began formation in 2010 and debuted in 2013. The septet co-writes and produces much of their output. Originally a hip hop group, their musical style has evolved to include a wide range of genres. Their lyrics, often focused on personal and social commentary, touch on the themes of mental health, troubles of school-age youth, loss, the journey towards loving oneself, and individualism. Their work features references to literature and psychological concepts and includes an alternative universe storyline. The group has staged several world tours.

The group initially formed as teenagers under Big Hit Entertainment and released their debut single album, 2 Cool 4 Skool (2013). Biography

When his life was cut short in the early hours of February 19, 2020, Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke was, at the age of 20, more famous than he’d ever been, yet nowhere close to where he was likely to end up. He exploded onto the scene in 2019 with “Welcome to the Party,” a song that somehow plays as enticing as it is menacing, exemplifying Brooklyn’s rising drill music scene at its sharpest. His voice across it—gruff and road-worn beyond his age—carries the delivery of a supervillain, daring his adversaries to try and stop the mayhem he has planned for the city.

Pop Smoke was from the far-flung Canarsie neighborhood, and his verses radiate a singular kind of Real Brooklyn energy. (A great deal of his "Welcome to the Party” video takes place in front of the long-standing jerk chicken staple Peppa’s.) His slang (“sturdy,” “dap me up”) was largely New York City-centric, which helped songs like “War,” “Christopher Walking,” and “Dior” reverberate quickly through, and beyond, the five boroughs. Fans worldwide got indoctrinated upon accepting his 2019 debut project’s invitation to Meet the Woo; a sequel, Meet the Woo 2, was released just weeks before his death. Pop Smoke worked well with the stars of his city, nabbing collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Bronx heartthrob A Boogie wit da Hoodie, and fellow ascending voices Lil Tjay and Fivio Foreign. He’d even have no problem setting his own tone on his Travis Scott collaboration “GATTI,” from the JACKBOYS project. Sigala
Sigala is the musical nom de plume of Bruce Fielder, a London-based house DJ, producer, and remixer. Born and raised in Norfolk, England, Fielder began piano as a child, and played in various bands after graduating university. He found work as a producer, and co-wrote Ella Eyre and Sigma's 2015 U.K. hit single "Good Times." His first solo single as Sigala was "Easy Love," an energetic house tune built around a sample of the Jackson 5's iconic hit "ABC." Released by Ministry of Sound, it entered the U.K. singles chart and shot up to number one in its second week. Fielder's second single, "Sweet Lovin'" (featuring singer/songwriter Bryn Christopher), hit number three and was certified gold or platinum in several countries. Several more hits followed in 2016, including "Say You Do" (featuring Imani and DJ Fresh), "Give Me Your Love" (featuring John Newman and Chic's Nile Rodgers), and "Ain't Giving Up," a collaboration with Craig David that appeared on his sixth album, Following My Intuition. James Arthur
James Arthur was the victor of the British X Factor's ninth season in 2012, winning the public vote with a rendition of Shontelle's rousing ballad "Impossible." Born in Middlesbrough, England, Arthur had written and performed in various bands since the age of 15, as well as performing solo in pubs and bars in his hometown. Many of the singer/songwriter's early recordings illustrate the pop/rock and hip-hop influences that helped shape his unique voice and style. Before he appeared on The X Factor, Arthur made it into the final 200 contestants of the U.K.'s The Voice TV series in 2011, without managing to progress any further. A year later, he auditioned for The X Factor, where he sang judge Tulisa Contostavlos' song "Young" and subsequently made it through the boot-camp round and into the live shows.

From then on, Arthur showcased his considerable talents and slowly improved under the watchful eye of mentor Nicole Sherzinger. He was pitted against Jahméne Douglas and Christopher Maloney in the final round of the contest, where he impressed the audience with performances of Cy Grant's "Feeling Good," Bob Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love," and Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On." The final song of the evening -- the version of Shontelle's "Impossible" -- was released immediately after Arthur was announced as the winner and made it to number one in the U.K. and Ireland, while also charting across Europe. He then went on tour with the X Factor show, playing across the U.K. in huge, sold-out arenas such as Wembley and the Birmingham LG.

After his X Factor success, Arthur worked alongside singer/songwriter Labrinth and Graham Stack (JLS, Take That, Westlife) in preparation for his debut album.
