Hi guys,

If you're planning on watching the annual return of Top of the Pops tomorrow, this year's thread is found http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=184330 so you can discuss the performances from the likes of Coldplay, Jess Glynne, Ellie Goulding, Years & Years, Fleur East, Nick Jonas and more. Just notifying any potential watchers as it's found in the UK TV forum rather than here in the Chart forum.

Hope you all have a good Christmas! biggrin.gif

... then come back here after 3pm to discuss the iTunes movements of these songs. ohmy.gif Well, unless iTunes is frozen and then we won't be able to do so. heehee.gif

Omg at Love Yourself back to 0.79 already. If only this had happened yesterday!

Coming for that hugely embarrassing drop from No.1, I wonder how the media will react to that *goes 1-OUT and gets swept under the carpet*

Depending on how the chart goes today, I can see it holding up for a couple days with additional media coverage (assuming it beats Justin). Streaming is really going make this song suffer next week for sure. I expect something like 1-16-OUT. laugh.gif

Posted by: Doboggan 25th December 2015, 10:43 AM

Are we really expecting the Choir to actually be #1? Only been following bits this week but it looked like Bieber had it in the bag to me...

Posted by: Christmaseve201 25th December 2015, 10:44 AM

It undoubtedly will drop 1/2-40 or more I'd say!

They soared ahead in the last two days after massive media coverage and Bieber tweeted to support the song himself.

It probably sold more in the last two days than it did in the other five days of the week.

But yeah, I see the choir leaving the top 40 from No.1, utterly ridiculous.

Posted by: Doboggan 25th December 2015, 10:48 AM

Hmmm I still think the surge ahead came too late but we shall see!

Some need to realise the whole point of the choir song was to get to Xmas number 1 to promote a (good) cause. The campaign has already stopped after being a huge success.

Bieber likely to be #1 in the next update - Pleased the NHS kept it for as long as they did, Total underdogs that nobody suspected would even come close.

Posted by: chartdj 25th December 2015, 11:27 AM

indeed bieber at #1 now

Posted by: Michael Bubré 25th December 2015, 11:41 AM

Well... that was an impressively fast reclaiming of the #1 from the lead NHS Choir had. I guess some people have still got gift cards (an inexplicably large number of them seem to be buying that awful Ariana Grande thing - or is that just the 2015 equivalent of getting coal in their stockings? laugh.gif) Would be slightly surprised if NHS Choir DOESN'T break the record drop for #1 at this rate.

Wow at Adele getting 2 versions top 10 again! Don't know why they haven't deleted the single version yet...

Well streaming has been hard to gauge as of late as the xmas songs are filling the upper region of Spotify and people's listening habits change this time of year. Still another week top 20 is brill when the album is selling so well.

Or maybe you should face facts that cowell likes fleur and sees her potential he also has a heavy influence on radio channels and promo appearances so shel defo have radio play as they're behind her and she'll be a lot of performing. With only one new entry (of course going to be knocking all your Bieber/NHS faves off the top cheer.gif) I expect the songs already benefiting from gift card effects etc. will be climbing even more without any new competition and the dramatic fallings of the Christmas songs, but this will be both biggrin.gif and sleep.gif at the same time because we all know who came ramping back up the top 40 this time last year laugh.gif

I'm really delighted to see 'Never Forget You' being heavily cherry picked and will return to the top 10 which provides me some hope that 'Lush Life' will perform incredibly well, hopefully Radio 1 and Capital decide to support Zara and she has a more successful campaign than Tove Lo (which was an absolute disaster following the album)

ok thanks. probably the choir won't beat that record as it's staying on itunes top 10 for a bit

The NHS song holding up better than expected.

Anyone know why Jane Wiedlin - Rush Hour is in the iTunes top 1000 with another version in the top 1500, nothing major I know but it's one of my fave 80s tunes and have never seen it appear in the chart before. EDIT: Also the weird thing is that the music video is now not available to watch on YouTube but I only just watched it yesterday.

I assume it's because it was featured on Peter Kay's Car Share which was shown on Christmas Eve.

Amazed the NHS Choir is still holding up, might stay top 10 sales (30k max I'd have thought), but with non-existent streams it will probably fall out of the top ten. McFly may keep their record though *.*

I'd really love for 'Love Me Like You' to get a new peak, or even top 10!

Posted by: ___∆___ 26th December 2015, 12:34 PM

Pleased to see the NHS not plummeting, Seems the coverage of it getting to #1 has helped - It will probably have a chart run like 'Wake Me Up' by the Gareth Malone All Star Choir (1-7-54), Not bad considering its 2 years old, independently released, no major TV performances, no physical and a few weeks ago was being offered at 250/1 to reach the top laugh.gif

Posted by: Jonjowman ⛄ 27th December 2015, 02:05 AM

'Sax' and 'Love Me Like You Do' were on TOTP which would explain why they've been given significant boosts. 'Love Me Like You' seems to be the song that's benefitting the most from none to little exposure this few days. 'Black Magic' had a snippet played on TOTP (as part of their "highlights of the year" montage), but I guess people realised that they wanted 'Love Me Like You' when they went to look for 'Black Magic'. It would also explain the big boost for the album on iTunes too. (Although, I'm not sure what they performed on Alan Carr, so that could explain their boosts?)

Very pleased to see Little Mix benefitting as much as they are from the gift cards. It makes me even more annoyed that they didn't show up to their TOTP performance recording, because I think they would've performed the Christmas mix of 'Love Me Like You' and could have potentially got it back inside the top 10 on iTunes! pirate.gif

It really would benefit her to have one version high up on iTunes though. It's quite silly for the people in charge of Adele not to have deleted the single as long as a month ago, let alone by now.

I think some of the chart geeks (said with love teresa.gif ) aren't really grasping that Adele and her management don't give a jot about selling a few extra singles or being higher up on the itunes chart. They want your £10 on the album in the shops and everything about this release is geared towards that from not being on streaming sites to a release before Christmas.

YES Shawn! cheer.gif Also his iTunes peak as an artist too I think as I seem to remember the Oh Cecilia single version stalling at around this mark on iTunes.

I'm thinking/hopeful that some current charting songs can just grow to become bigger hits: The Weekend ("In the Night"), 99 Souls ("The Girl is Mine"), Major Lazer ("Light It Up"), Shawn Mendes ("Stitches"), Robin Schulz ("Sugar") - I'm sure there's a few others that I've forgotten.

On the other hand I think it's great! It becomes tedious when the year is practically planned out with guaranteed #1s week after week like 2000 and 2014.

Is he really this popular or is this just the way things are going with streaming? With download sales on the slide staying at the top of the itunes chart will be easier and streaming will just keep songs around forever.

I feel like Bieber is the first big name to really benefit from this but we will get this happen more and more this next year or so.

Well if you think about it, he wouldn't do that well on streaming if he wasn't that popular kink.gif I think they go hand in hand, but it's no like is sales are particularly low either - he has the top 2 songs on iTunes and What Do You Mean? is in the top 10 right now too. But he is top 2 when his main competition is Adele looking to sell albums, NHS xmas song and well I cant really think of another big release lately. Even the X factor winners song hasn't done its regular 200k opening.

He is of course very popular but I feel circumstance is playing a part too. Rihanna was #1 for 10 weeks in a transitional period for the charts where cd sales were dying and downloads were taking off and lack of real competition.

The singles chart will just reflect the radio airplay chart more and more with streaming where songs stay longer and longer on it.

Right now everyone who has a proper 'hit' is havig crazy longevity, Love me like you is in its 13th week and still top 20 on itunes, Sax has basically been a mainstay of the top 10 (excluding xmas songs), Biebers 3 songs have lingered on, Hello is still what #3 combined.

There is currently only 2 songs in the official top 40 who have less than 5 weeks on the chart and that is NHS and Louisa, everything is stale and the xmas songs that fall off are going to be replaced by old stuff too.

The chart is incredibly stagnant right now. Nothing new being released that's having any sort of impact. Crap songs staying around for weeks on end.

I'm not getting the Bieber love at all. The songs are not good. Love yourself is quite decent. The other 2 singles are bland r'n'b.

Just feel like the chart needs a few big songs to explode in January otherwise we'll have the same top 5 for another month.

This year is certainly worse than last that is for sure. This year the whole top 5 have been #1 at some point in the christmas chart and 1 song in the top 10 (NHS) has less than 5 weeks on the chart. Last year Ben Haenow was xmas #1 on his first week (so same as NHS) but Uptown Funk was #2 on its second week, Olly Murs was #4 on its 3rd week in the chart, the Wealdstone raiders were new at 5. Ed Sheeran was the only old song hovering around the top 5.

I don't think any of Justin Bieber's #1s could be described as R&B. Sorry does have a strong dancehall influence (the drums in the beat) but it's notable that none have received support from urban radio. Company would fit that description though.

WDYM is a pop song with a tropical house-based beat, Love Yourself is a standard ballad and Sorry, like I mentioned, sounds like a mashup of EDM, tropical house and Jamaican dancehall.

Posted by: Joe ho ho! 28th December 2015, 12:29 PM

Yeah I'd say house pop too. For nu-beeb. His last era/Confident was r and b though.

Sorry just screams Rihanna to me, pop with island infusion.

The thing I find most amusing about the awful run of this song is the fact that there was so much hype and positivity about Louisa before Forever Young was released, and yet it still flopped to the extent it has.

The fact it struggled to hold up number 1 on the iTunes chart for more than a couple of days really emphasizes the lack of interest in the song, especially seeing as past winners with less hype and likeability than herself have managed to keep the placing for numerous weeks (for example Sam Bailey, even she managed to get number one, and number one on iTunes for a while more, and she wasn't exactly chart friendly material).

No wonder she hasn't tweeted anything about the song since its release, obviously her and Simon and Syco were all anticipating an easy number one laugh.gif

Posted by: JosephCarey 28th December 2015, 09:32 PM

In all fairness I don't think it's anything to do with Louisa herself. Everyone seems to find the song itself totally boring. Louisa's own material will change things I'm sure. Winning singles don't dictate future success.

Posted by: The Hit Parade 28th December 2015, 09:34 PM

I might have said this before but I wonder whether it's because Louisa was such an obvious winner that people don't feel as much ownership of her as they did with past winners.

Posted by: bluebitchboy 28th December 2015, 09:54 PM

Was Louisa an obvious winner? I thought there were a few with a shout particularly the first few weeks. The only winner who was the only contender from week 1 that I can remember is sam bailey, she seemed to be featured every week on gogglebox as well. Even Leona didn't appear as contender until a few weeks in iirc

Posted by: sammy01 28th December 2015, 09:55 PM

I think Louisa is a bit of it. She is just decent, her voice is good but shouty, she is a bit wet personality wise and she never gave anyone that moment to really think yeah she is amazing.

The winners people have usually invested in so the winners song doesn't matter because people buy it any way but people obviously didn't invest in Louisa as a person at all.

Posted by: Joe. 28th December 2015, 10:01 PM

It's the song, strategy and the fact that not as many people watch X factor. I don't think it has anything to do with Louisa. And I don't think it really matters either. It's not like Cannonball is known to be played on the radio ever is it? It's not remembered regardless of selling. Louisa is still a lot more likely to have success than Sam, Ben, Matt, Leon of a load of the other failed winners.

Posted by: JimmyTinsel 28th December 2015, 10:03 PM

No doubts it is a poor song. But the fact it has done so horrifically I think must reflect on her personal popularity.
I for one have no idea what her musical style or future music is likely to be.

Posted by: Jason 28th December 2015, 10:15 PM

Posted by: Jack 28th December 2015, 10:16 PM

There's a difference between 'Cannonball' and 'Forever Young' though. 'Cannonball' did badly enough to be completely forgotten about weeks later, while 'Forever Young' has very possibly done badly enough to actually be remembered for being the X Factor song that did horrendously - I've seen numerous conversations regarding how badly Louisa has done and it's gotten pretty decent coverage in the press (which couldn't be said for Little Mix).

Louisa is pretty heavily associated with failure and the decline of X Factor in the public's mind right now, I would say. Winner singles are never indicators of success but the coverage surrounding 'Forever Young' looks like a pretty heavy indicator for me. I'd be very surprised if radio were confident in supporting her next year.

Yeah this is my stance on it all too! Although if Nick is staying with the show, then Radio 1 might be forced to support her regardless due to the connection? unsure.gif

Winner's single or not, it's awful and offensively bland and not falling quick enough for me.

Posted by: Davidson 29th December 2015, 12:38 AM

Can 'All My Friends' hurry up and get back in the top 40 please?

I'm really worried Radio 1 will drop it from their playlist just when it is about to take off.

Posted by: troylovesmusic 29th December 2015, 12:46 AM

I do feel a bit sorry for Louisa tbh because she is a talented girl and with the right material and backing I could see her doing really well but that winners single really was so dull and was not catchy in the slighest I don't know what they were thinking picking it. I just hope it doesn't damage her career I heard rumors they are rushing to get her album out in Febuary which would be a TERRIBLE idea IMO.

Renegades by X Ambassadors has been growing a lot in the last few days. It's now up to 69 and it's discounted, and as well as that it's on a car advert (can't remember the specific car make though). Looks like it could shape up to be a decent sized hit.

X Ambassadors had an A-Listed song on Radio 1 last year if I remember right, so they're radio friendly material.

Easily, but the record technically belongs to Union J who fell 1-22 on the sales chart in December 2014.

I'm predicting: 1-37.

Ace of Spades up to #27. Some very nice tributes coming in...

Posted by: gooddelta 29th December 2015, 07:00 PM

Streaming will be much bigger and downloads much smaller by that point, and it's hard to encourage people to go back to outdated consumption methods, even for charity. For these campaigns to work in the future they're going to need to focus more on getting people to listen to the song (which is hard, as they're often so incredibly crap musically) rather than buying it.

In the future these campaigns will probably put emphasis on both downloading the song and putting it on repeat on multiple streaming services (even if people put it on mute while they play it on repeat while they sleep or whatever, the first ten plays will still count laugh.gif).

It worked for Stormzy anyway, as 'Shut Up' was #9 on sales but #8 officially because of streaming.

For people who don't spend their lives on a music forum I'm sure the chart/radio/streaming playlists and charts are where they get exposed to 'new' music and if that all moves at snails pace then so will they with their music listening.

99 souls is a perfect example of if it is given exposure and on the chart people will buy/stream it, because it was not even a thing when given free.

Elle King arrow up.gif 55 & 281

Looking good for Elle & Snakehips to go top 40 next week. Wouldn't surprise me if 'All My Friends' scraped it tomorrow as it's close to top 40 on streaming as well!

99 Souls "The Girl Is Mine" arrow up.gif to #10
Shawn Mendes "Stitches" arrow down.gif to #11

Great to see 99 Souls back in the top 10, hopefully they'll overtake Adele/Justin Bieber and get a boost tonight with it being new years (can see it being played a bunch in the clubs etc).

I doubt they are, they've probably forgotten about the existence of Buzzjack (the fame's gone to their head laugh.gif)

I'd love 99 Souls to be an eventual top 10 hit, but it's exceeded my expectations more than I ever dreamed at the moment.

We have already had Alex Day of #4-OUT "Forever Yours” fame on the site in 2011.

ChC Media had the best though - we had an interview with THE Tasmin Archer in 2006, in which one of the questions was ‘when “Sleeping Satellite” debuted at 50 did you think it was going to get to No. 1?’ biggrin.gif

Was that actually her?! I always assumed that was someone posing as her (or even trolling), in the same way that we'd have fake accounts posing as Tina Barrett back in the mid 00s. laugh.gif

Oh yes! What was Tasmin's answer to that question?

I did an interview with Jimmy from 911 on my blog two years ago and asked him how he felt about getting beaten to their first No.1 in 1998 by the dreadful Spacedust record (not that many would see More Than A Woman as being any better of course!). His answer was as follows:

QUOTE
"The story with 'More Than A Woman' was interesting. Spacedust was found to be illegally bought in and was stripped of the number one slot. So officially we got a number 1 there too. But getting it with 'A Little Bit More' was even better, we were in Ireland doing a TV show when we heard."

Think he may have got his facts a little mixed up somewhere along the line/fed some false information!

I'll be surprised if Lean On doesn't get used in the New Year's Day fireworks which would give it another boost. The same applies for Cheerleader as well.
