Justin Bieber featuring Daniel Caesar and GIVĒON Peaches 5th single from Justice Released: 19th March 2021 Label: Def Jam Recordings Chart Statistics NE (01/04/2021) | 3-3-2-2-2-2 Sales: 200k+ Certification: Silver Status: Standard Chart Ratio 07 Sales 02 Audio Streaming 05 Video Streaming Video Biography There’s a moment in a 2020 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe where Justin Bieber begins—quietly, hesitantly—to cry. “It was hard for me being that young and being in the industry, and not knowing where to turn, and everyone telling me they love me, and just turning their back on you in a second,” Bieber says, each clause kicking up memories like dust. The point isn’t to weep with or for him—he had more dreams come true in his first 25 years than most people manage in a lifetime. But he’s also one of the few pop stars of his generation to have truly grown up in public, weathering the cable newsification of celebrity culture in the internet era while still trying to develop as both an artist and a person. Even early on, you could tell he had his eye on the future, balancing a doe-eyed wholesomeness with earnest attempts at hip-hop and R&B, material that suited him as a kid with material that reflected his growth into adolescence and adulthood. Some teen-pop singers end up trapped in amber; Justin Bieber has, knocks and all, kept swimming. Born in London, Ontario, in 1994, Bieber was famously discovered when his future manager, Scooter Braun, stumbled on some performance videos that Bieber’s mom had uploaded to YouTube to share with family and friends. Braun, who understood not only Bieber’s appeal but the potential of the internet, encouraged him to keep making videos and keep the equipment cheap—an approach that not only helped Bieber’s growing fanbase to understand that he was still just a kid like them, but drafted a new blueprint for how artists could reach audiences in the digital era. With the exception of a voice change around 2011, 2009’s My World, 2010's My World 2.0 and 2012's Believe are more or less of a piece: the sound of a boy trying to stick the landing into puberty. Released in 2015, Purpose showed Bieber developing a more thoughtful connection to his material, including collaborations with vanguard pop producers like Diplo, Skrillex and benny blanco. After a five-year break during which Bieber underwent significant personal changes—including a detox from touring life, a diagnosis of Lyme disease and a epiphanic marriage to Hailey Baldwin—he came back with 2020’s Changes. “People have been putting me on a pedestal,” Bieber told Apple Music. ""I didn’t ask for that. Obviously I love making music, but there are a lot of people that love making music and they’re not in the position that I’m in. I’m just trying to steward that wisely, steward my relationship wisely. I want people to take a look at my story—hopefully, my words can make a difference.” - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History Justin Bieber 2010 11 One Time -1- 2010 71 Love Me -PS- 2010 62 One Less Lonely Girl -2- 2010 76 Favorite Girl -PS- 2010 03 Baby (feat. Lil Nas X MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) 2nd single from MONTERO Released: 26th March 2021 Label: Columbia Records Chart Statistics NE (08/04/2021) | 1-1-1-1-1 Sales: 200k+ Certification: Silver Status: Standard Chart Ratio 08 Sales 01 Audio Streaming 01 Video Streaming Video Biography The way Lil Nas X tells it, it sounds simple, almost mystical. “I was just kinda bored,” he told Apple Music. “I wanted to put something up. So that’s what I did.” Not only did the “it” in question—“Old Town Road”—become a global phenomenon (and 2019 Apple Music Award winner for Song of the Year), it prompted surprisingly pertinent conversations about how we define and classify music. Was it country? Was it rap? Cowboy anthem or LGBTQ camp? TikTok novelty or legitimate pop song? It was, of course, all those things, and pity those who couldn’t live with the contradictions. Born Montero Lamar Hill in 1999, Nas grew up outside Atlanta but came of age on the internet, turning to social media and meme-making out of boredom and teenage loneliness—feelings compounded by his struggle to resolve his sexuality. (He later became the first artist to come out while his record was at No. 1, though he’d figured that between the rhinestones and rainbows and the general vibe, it would’ve been obvious.) “I didn’t know it was gonna do what it did,” he said of “Old Town Road” and its companion EP, 7. “But it did what it did.” - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 2019 01 Old Town Road -1- MILLIONAIRE 2019 21 Panini -2- 2019 55 Rodeo (Lil Nas X & Cardi B) -AT- 2020 23 HOLIDAY -1- 2021 01 MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) -2- 2 x #1 | 2 x Top 5 | 2 x Top 10 | 2 x Top 20 | 4 x Top 40 | 5 x Top 100 Social Media Lil Nas X |

Future chart hit?
Billie Eilish Your Power 3rd single from Happier Than Ever Released: 29th April 2021 Label: Darkroon / Interscope Records Video Biography When singer-songwriter Billie Eilish feels something new, the first thing she does is take out her phone and write it down. “You can write anything,” she told Apple Music in an interview for the Up Next series. “You can say the truth, and you can not tell anyone that it’s the truth—you can just write it, and it’ll be yours.” Raised and homeschooled in Los Angeles by actor/musician parents, Eilish (born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell in 2001) started writing songs when she was around 11, exploring a strain of melancholy, minimal and slightly surrealistic pop influenced as much by Lana Del Rey as the radical honesty of rappers like Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt. Writing and recording with her brother—and producer—Finneas O’Connell at their parents’ house, Eilish released dont smile at me in 2017, followed by an ever-evolving series of singles—a prime example of the fact that, in the streaming era, artists are now free to move directly from their bedrooms into the spotlight. Despite the attention, Eilish is doing her best to stake out a space of freedom and fluidity, expanding her range of collaborators (Vince Staples, Khalid) and dodging easy definition. “If people think I have a sound, if people are like, ‘Oh yeah, her sound is this,’ if someone asks you what my sound is and you have an answer for them—you’re wrong,” she told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe. “Instead of trying to find a sound, when I want to make something and when I have an idea of what I want to make, I’m just going to make that.” - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 2018 47 lovely (Billie Eilish & Khalid) -3- MILLIONAIRE 2018 21 when the party's over -2*- 2018 72 ocean eyes -1- 2018 47 come out and play -NAS- 2019 78 idontwannabeyouanymore -AT- 2019 79 bellyache -2- 2019 06 bury a friend -3*- 2019 13 wish you were gay -IG- 2019 02 bad guy -4*- MILLIONAIRE 2019 60 you should see me in a crown -1*- 2019 77 all the good girls go to hell -5*- 2019 03 everything i wanted -NAS- 2020 01 No Time To Die -OST- 2020 07 my future -1- 2020 02 Therefore I Am -2- 2021 __ Your Power -3- 1 x #1 | 4 x Top 5 | 6 x Top 10 | 7 x Top 20 | 8 x Top 40 | 15 x Top 100 Social Media Billie Eilish |

Future chart hit?
Little Mix featuring Saweetie Confetti 4th single from Confetti Released: 6th November 2020 / 30th April 2021 Label: RCA Video Biography As the first group to win The X Factor, Little Mix set a high standard from their formation in 2011. In the years since, the quartet have exceeded any expectations placed on them, performing spirited pop that unapologetically shows off its members’ personalities and effortlessly fit in with the 2010s’ constantly shifting pop trends. Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall had all auditioned as solo singers when trying out for The X Factor but were put together early on in the show’s run, and their charisma and harmonies won over viewers. Little Mix’s first single from their 2012 debut album, “Wings”, was an ideal opening statement for them, its themes of empowerment boosted by a stomping beat and a sing-along-worthy chorus. Since then, they have channelled confident girl groups like the Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child as well as forward-thinking singers like Janet Jackson and Rihanna, with singles like the sparkling “Black Magic”, the defiant “Shout Out to My Ex” and 2017’s chaotic Stormzy collab “Power” combining no-nonsense lyrics with immediate beats. In 2020, they cemented their legacy both on record and with Little Mix: The Search, a reality show tasked with putting together a next-generation girl band—demonstrating that their goal since they were put together in the early 2010s has been lifting up women all over the world through energetic, danceable pop. - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History Little Mix 2011 01 Cannonball -NAS- 2012 01 Wings -1- 2012 03 DNA -2- 2013 12 Change Your Life -3- 2013 16 How Ya Doin'? Glad to see Starstruck in the Top 40.
And from outside the Top 40, Martin & Gina is so close to beating 45 King's record for longest spent in the Top 100 without reaching the Top 50 |

Just finished listening - I was expecting to find the charts really boring this week with only two newies but actually almost all the songs they played still felt pretty fresh (Blinding Lights/Levitating aside) which I guess just shows the real benefit of not playing the same songs every week and having a good mix in there. The less said about the Top 2 the better but I was expecting to skip through loads of songs this week and I didn't need to!
Also something I noticed when reading through: Probably the first time a song has ever climbed the week it’s moved from SCR to ACR Mi Gente climbed 16-14 when it went to ACR in 2007 (the Beyoncé remix came out the same week) 'Advice' by Cadet/Deno also climbed from #44 to #36 the week it hit ACR although obviously that was for a very different reason. (I believe 'Three Lions' also manages to fit into this category as the 3-year ACR rule came into effect during its rise in popularity during the World Cup) |

Reading this thread back, happy to hear that they finally actually played 'HEARTBREAK ANNIVERSARY'
Not a huge fan of either of the top 40 new entries this week (the Years & Years song is ok, Becky Hill's is just painfully generic) and the songs hitting new peaks are a bit of a mixed bag leaning towards mostly stuff I'm not a fan of as well - for my sins I've actually got quite into 'Body' now though, I know it's pretty lazy but I'd be lying if I said it's not one of the catchiest songs around at the moment. Happy to see 'Rasputin' still climbing too. |

I adore Montero so i'm happy to see it make 5 weeks at the top but wouldn't mind if something new got there next week, haven't actually listened to the new Billie song yet but hopefully her and Little Mix can inject some new blood into the Top 10. I've given up hope on Astronaut In The Ocean making it that far.
Only other thing to note is Years & Years making the Top 40! Pity it's not their stunning cover of It's A Sin though. |
