I love it, it’s so good. wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif

It’s sad hearing her sing about Mac though.

“Wish I could say thank you to Malcolm cause he was an angel” MY HEART

So nice she's been able to pay tribute to him in a song <3 This is a bop anyway, I'm shocked she's releasing again so soon though, not complaining though as new Ari music is always a plus obvs.

Posted by: CardiiB Nov 4 2018, 08:36 AM

Not really a fan of the song, just sounds like an album filler from Sweetner for me

Posted by: Cameron Nov 4 2018, 10:19 AM

What does this mean for breathin though?

Posted by: JosephAvery Nov 4 2018, 10:45 AM

Gorgeous track!! wub.gif

Posted by: Juliano Nov 4 2018, 11:36 AM

I really like the idea of this track and it sounds cool, I think it's a grower. Always glad to have more Ari!

Posted by: mdh Nov 4 2018, 12:54 PM

This is better than anything on "sweetener". Really strong track.

Posted by: Liаm Nov 4 2018, 02:29 PM

The title track is lushhh, and means so much to her you can tell. I can't wait for this project, I can totally see why she's moving on from Sweetener as it represents something that she'd probably rather move on from, but she's doing so in such a classy and dignified way <3

Posted by: Jack Nov 4 2018, 02:45 PM

'Thank U, Next' is gorgeous wub.gif Really excited for what's to come!

Posted by: HarryEzra Nov 4 2018, 03:01 PM

Thank U, Next is an utter jam, can't wait for this album wub.gif

Posted by: Juliano Nov 4 2018, 03:50 PM

I totally ignored the fact that she announced it was the album name! I like the sass of it all.

ohmy.gif !!

#1 on US Apple Music (first pop song to go #1 this year!)
#2 on UK Apple Music

Posted by: Jordan Lee Nov 4 2018, 07:18 PM

I like it doesn’t scream lead single but it’s a good nice track probably one that’ll grow the more I listen.

It kinda sounds like an extension of Knew Better from Dangerous Woman in places.

Posted by: Juliano Nov 4 2018, 07:57 PM

Super glad how this is going down so far! It feels correct!

Oddly enough, I thought Ari herself had suggested it is a sort of continuation of Knew Better, except she described it as "Sounding the exact opposite of Knew Better". huh.gif laugh.gif

She did! I didn’t see this until you said it biggrin.gif as soon as I heard it though I was humming Knew Better in my head pretty much through the whole song they’re very similar sounding. It’s like a more polished version of the track.

Blimey!!! ohmy.gif

“Report: @ArianaGrande's "thank u, next" received ~8.18 million Spotify streams on its first day of release (potential single day record among female artists).”

Posted by: Juliano Nov 5 2018, 11:24 AM

Finally it's #1 on UK iTunes! Smashing!! cheer.gif wub.gif

Posted by: BrookeOlivia Nov 5 2018, 11:42 AM

Really love this wub.gif

Posted by: Wasabi. Nov 5 2018, 01:28 PM

I'm obsessed. I love it and I'm so glad it's smashing, just like she said in the song.

A bit confused as to how this is doing SO much better than Tears did at first, when that had a huge build up, loads of hype and a brilliant video released the same day. This felt very cute little surprise release with some thrown together artwork and no video. It is slightly confusing to me, regardless of how much I love the song.

Posted by: Jack Nov 5 2018, 01:32 PM

Agreed, I felt like it was a cute personal song - kind of like Demi's 'Sober'. I expected it to probably go Top 20, maybe even Top 10 but not to be quite this successful!

Posted by: Wasabi. Nov 5 2018, 01:57 PM

Also, though - I think any song that references a famous person's ex explicitly is like catnip to the public.

Posted by: Juliano Nov 5 2018, 03:50 PM

So she's confirmed the video for Breathin will be released this week, so it feels like she will be pushing both at the same time.

I had a feeling a Breathin' video was still on the way! Her label are telling radio stations to keep pushing Breathin' and not to playlist Thank U, Next, which is strange given the success of the track so far.

Posted by: Jack Nov 5 2018, 04:40 PM

If it really stays this popular they won't have a choice I don't think. I'm sure there have been examples of it happening previously - Work From Home for example was only supposed to be a promo track. Then I think it happened with 'In My Feelings' more recently.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Nov 5 2018, 08:03 PM

I find it boring, but still better than the majority of Sweetener.

Posted by: Jack Nov 5 2018, 08:44 PM

It's growing on every listen wub.gif There's something special about it, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE Nov 5 2018, 09:10 PM

Shes creating a really interesting spin on abrelease strategy. It feels like she’ll justbdrop the album whenever

Posted by: Theo. Nov 6 2018, 06:19 PM

I'm really loving this after a couple of listens (aka after my second listen). It's very chilled out and I think it's what she does best (after the bangers). It almost feels like 'Sweetener' was trying too hard to create this sound with tracks like "R.E.M.", "Sweetener" and "Successful".

She's just released the lyric video and will perform it on Ellen tomorrow so she has a real shot at her first US #1 next week!

Posted by: Blond 2.0 Nov 6 2018, 07:48 PM

Posted by: Theo. Nov 7 2018, 10:09 AM

Performance on Ellen can be viewed here:

She looked like she was having so much fun! wub.gif I loved the fall from the chair as well - good on her for continuing rather than asking for them to re-start the filming. I'm not sure what the point of having Taylor and Victoria there was when she could've just had backing dancers but I guess good for her for supporting her friends.

Posted by: Cqmerqn Nov 7 2018, 02:46 PM

It is majorly frustrating to think that this is going to #1 over so many way, way superior singles she's missed out with. sad.gif

THIS IS NOT GOOD.

GOD DAMIT SOCIAL MEDIA :|

Posted by: Botchia Nov 7 2018, 10:49 PM

I'm here for this being #1

The song is sfg and feels like a real personal moment for her. Maybe not a huge pop moment like NTLTC or emotionally significant like One Last Time but both of those were unfortunate to miss out on #1 to two monster hits. Whereas, there's nothing really big to stop her this time round!

Posted by: Theo. Nov 7 2018, 11:22 PM

Possible song titles based on the departures board in the "Breathin'" video are "NASA", "Needy", "Imagine" and "Remember".

Posted by: Jordan Lee Nov 8 2018, 12:53 PM

If it’s out tonight I guess it’ll be midnight US so like 5/6 AM here?

Did anyone see the sun yesterday’s where it said an album was leaked onto Spotify under a different name but was quickly taken down I wonder if it was this album.

Posted by: Cqmerqn Nov 8 2018, 04:11 PM

She’s said that it’s not coming tonight and that they’re finalising the album

Hopefully by the end of the month?

Some fan page on twitter seems to think the Breathin video states it’s coming December 21st.

I hope it comes early January though.

Posted by: Theo. Nov 9 2018, 06:18 PM

Me too! I've had it in my head all week and can't stop playing it music.gif A really deserved hit for her to round off an excellent year - anything else from here on will just be a bonus.

Posted by: Parallel Reality Nov 9 2018, 06:33 PM

NGL I love this. Yes, she's done better but I find it very reflective and I love the verses.

Posted by: Juliano Nov 9 2018, 06:52 PM

SO HAPPY!! She really deserves this #1!

Posted by: Cameron Nov 9 2018, 07:20 PM

She’s unstoppable!!

Posted by: Liаm Nov 10 2018, 12:56 AM

Yaass so glad she got this #1, I looove it as I've said! It might not be the big pop moment that her other songs have been, but it's really showing her as an artist imo, it's just such an appreciative, reflective, tone that's really really classy and I think it's connecting with a lot of people who appreciate being that mature over an ex, it feels like a real moment because it's come at the exact right time in her career. It's such a powerful combination that it can empower or relate to people, but is so personal and fitting for where she is in her own life.

I'm so excited for this album, I don't really mind waiting because we only just had Sweetener and I won't be *too* greedy but I feel like it's going to be such a new level artistically wub.gif It doesn't even feel rushed for her to move on, because Sweetener is probably a campaign she doesn't feel she can relate to or be represented by which is fair enough given all that's happen since she made it.

Posted by: Wasabi. Nov 11 2018, 10:06 AM

I hope the mods don’t mind but I thought the single deserved it’s own thread given it’s looking to be her biggest hit ever.

I’ve watched this performance so many times. It’s one of my favourite performances of her ever. It is so joyful and also bittersweet and her personality pours out. There’s a moment when she trips and there’s a moment when she starts to cry but it all adds to the performance. Ariana isn’t a dancer but I love the choreo from First Wives Club too, it’s super cute.

Posted by: Cameron Nov 11 2018, 10:10 AM

I'm going to move the threads over bare with haha

Posted by: SweetButJonjo👻 Nov 11 2018, 05:23 PM

This is such an ear worm. It's not quite to the levels of her pop moments, but my GOD does she pull this sound off when she wants to.

The Ellen performance is incredible for so many reasons, but ultimately it shows her personality off perfectly. Love, love, L O V E that her and her team were like "nah. Keep the trip in" it makes me love her so muh more heart.gif

Posted by: Cqmerqn Nov 11 2018, 06:10 PM

It’s mad how big this is right now. Not even One Kiss, God’s Plan or In My Feelings could do over 1m on Spotify! ohmy.gif

Posted by: Theo. Nov 11 2018, 11:02 PM

This is confirmed to debut at #1 in the US, continuing Ariana's streak of every lead single debuting within the top 10, plus she has had two further top 10 debuts with "Bang Bang" and "Focus". Queen!

HER FIRST BBH100 #1!! I'M DECEASED 😭😭😭😭😭

Posted by: Blond 2.0 Nov 12 2018, 12:42 AM

It's really a grower I'm in love with it now

Posted by: ZaraRuinMyLife Nov 12 2018, 12:46 AM

This song really doesn’t deserve to be #1! I’m glad she got number one but this is nowhere near her top five singles! Not even her top 10!

Posted by: Cucumberella Nov 12 2018, 02:20 AM

that performance was SUPERSTAR levels. perfectly nailed charisma, the right staging, the right balance of personality and it matched the song completely.

gotta disagree with lee on this one - i think people always equate the feel of a song (it's epicness, it's grandeur etc. with how it should perform) but the charts just reflect the songs the public like most - if everyone resonates with a chill song like 'thank u, next' 'God's Plan' etc. then that's how it is!

i would say ariana was extremely smart to do an easy breezy relationship track. it gives her a chance to get her personality across, whilst giving good twitter meme-ability and relate-ability with her target demographic (the youth who are all hung up on exes... god the amount of stuff on twitter re: this meant the song just sold itself). the fact it's very accessible, not too complex and is polished and hooky means it really COULDN'T fail.

Posted by: blacksquare Nov 12 2018, 10:55 AM

I disagree with this not being as worthy of success compared to her other hits.

It's already amongst her best for me - such a smart spin on the usual break up song and completely effortless. I love it.

Posted by: Dircadirca Nov 12 2018, 11:04 AM

Finally ending the Maroon 5 reign, what a legend.

Posted by: Klumpkin Nov 12 2018, 11:07 AM

Despite not being initially convinced by this, I've done a U-Turn very quickly on this and it's fast becoming one of my favourite Ariana songs! I think the lyrics and how they relate to most of her demographic and very explicitly Ariana herself is really selling this song. Plus it's super catchy and very memeable!

Maybe a bit cynical but this was very clever move by Ariana/her label to release this song whilst her name is in the headlines and off the back of a disappointing album (despite the top notch singles). But good for her getting all this success after having a very tough last couple of years - I think this year will be looked back on as the time Ariana really hit it big time in her career.

Also just watched that Ellen performance - fallen in love again with the song and Ari! Carrying on despite the couple f-ups and having a laugh with the backup dancers was just fantastic to watch laugh.gif

Posted by: Cameron Nov 12 2018, 05:56 PM

She deserves it all

Posted by: Vülker Nov 12 2018, 06:22 PM

I know it's not a massive pop banger with all the grandiose pop production they usually come with but that's why I love it so much. It feels 100% genuine, no need for big beats and catchy synth lines when all you have is Ariana baring her soul. I love her so much more for this.

Posted by: Botchia Nov 13 2018, 10:36 PM

It absolutely deserves to be #1!! Not every song has to be a pop banger. This is one of her most important songs released and has a lot more significance to her as an artist than all of the Sweetener singles. So it's incredible to see it smashing across the world. A true star!

For me, it's fast becoming one of my favourites by her.

Posted by: Liаm Nov 13 2018, 11:39 PM

100% agreed, I can't even really compare it to the likes of One Last Time and Into You, they're all time faves and of course this isn't going to be up there just yet. But it doesn't have to be, as said it's a total different moment and a transition. I don't think she meant for it to be a #1 hit and outchart her "better" pop songs, but it's connected because it's the exact right time in her career for a song like this. That's much more powerful than a big chorus or banging prodction in terms of making an impact.

Posted by: SweetButJonjo👻 Nov 14 2018, 10:21 PM

This has hit 100 million Spotify streams in just 11 days. The fastest song to do so!!

Incredible ohmy.gif

Posted by: Juliano Nov 17 2018, 01:52 AM

It seems like she has been teasing Needy a lot, so I wouldn't be suprised if it was the second single.

Posted by: DexTheHalls Nov 17 2018, 10:04 AM

Officially #1 in Australia - her 2nd overall (after NTLTC)

thank u, next is also her 20th top 50 hit biggrin.gif She’s so far had 19 songs go top 50 in the US for comparison. Australia beginning to love her more than Pink ohmy.gif

Posted by: Mack. Nov 17 2018, 01:06 PM

Fantastic that it has got to #1 although it's not there with 'One Last Time' and 'Into You'.

Posted by: Slick Nov 18 2018, 02:17 PM

This song's success has really taken me by surprise. It's NICE but it's not amazing. Really pleased for her and glad to see her having such amazing success - I'm just surprised it's with this song.

This is a nice enough song (although the swearing puts me off it a bit tbh). I don't like this as much as No Tears Left To Cry so its a bit annoying for me that it this a much bigger hit sad.gif

Omg!! The video is Amazing and Kris was a highlight haha

Posted by: LewisGT Nov 30 2018, 09:07 PM

Might be my favourite music video of all time already.

It's a bit of a mess at time but it's perfect for the song.

Posted by: Euphorique Nov 30 2018, 09:45 PM

Not as good as NTLTC video but it was entertaining

Posted by: Chez Wombat Nov 30 2018, 10:52 PM

Well, that video's gonna break the internet with all the possible gifs x

I'm not normally into this kind of slow stripped down sound, but I really like this. It's refreshing to hear a big hit song that feels so simple yet authentic with nothing calculated about it, I can kinda understand why it's become her biggest hit as it completely fits her. I like to think the calmness reflects how amazingly she's reacted after all the hounding she's gotten over the last year, have so much respect for her.

It took this video just 33mins to reach 1m likes on YouTube, compared to 12 hours for Look What You Made Me Do!! ohmy.gif

Predictions for views in 24 hours then?

I’ll go for 53m

Posted by: Jack Nov 30 2018, 11:36 PM

I don't think it's quite as good as I expected it to be, had it not been for the hyping up of it all, I probably would be loving it much more. Still a very solid video though.

Posted by: SweetButJonjo👻 Nov 30 2018, 11:37 PM

Amazing video. This, NTLTC & GIAW videos are top 5 videos of the year. She's really on a whole other level atm.

really cute video. i don't think it's a wow / gamechanging moment but it's glossy, polished, it's cast well and is so meme-able so she hit the nail on the head! good girl ari x

Posted by: Wasabi. Dec 1 2018, 01:15 AM

I wasn’t as blown away as I hoped but i think that’s partly because Ari gave away SO much before it came out. The editing is a little shoddy in places and there’s an odd filter in some of it but it’s an undoubtedly great video.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Dec 1 2018, 01:26 AM

She’s definitely the video queen of 2018.

Infact I’ve never looked forward to videos as much since Gaga between 2009-2011.

I get Joe and Jack's posts tbh.

However, I'm actually loving it more the 2nd and 3rd time of watching it. Plus she looks absolutely incredible in it. Just utter joy and fun. Glossy and big budget. Amazing.

Oh and 30 million not even 12 hours in mellow.gif

Posted by: ZaraRuinMyLife Dec 1 2018, 09:02 AM

The video is GOOD but nowhere near as good as I expected, I had such high hopes for it but I do still like it.

Holy crap at these views though, insanity!

I can see this doing close to 60 million in first 24 hours.
Should take the vevo record in the next 2 or so hours which is 43 million in 24 hours by Taylor Swift,
Looking forward to seeing what this will get in 24 hours.

Huge video and well deserved.

i don’t understand what more you would want from a video like this? genuinely interested.

the time it’s taken from release to shoot to editing.. it’s a miracle this is as good as it is. thirsty bitches made them rush it out so any editing issues are down to the pressures they’ve felt to get it out asap.

So happy for her, she’s completely smashed the 24 hour record with over an hour to go!!

Posted by: DexTheHalls Dec 4 2018, 12:51 AM

^ she’ll easily be #1 again next week though now the video is out, I reckon another couple of weeks at the top for her too

Posted by: SGrey Dec 4 2018, 06:56 AM

I agree the over hyping did take some of the excitement away from the video but it will go on to remain as one of the best videos in pop IMO. The song however has finally hit me and is so infectious!!! wub.gif I love the intro and the catchiness to the basic “thank u next” wub.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Dec 4 2018, 01:20 PM

I think it's probably the best music video I've seen all year, she really is the master of the music video right now.

I still really don't like the song though.

You're not alone, I don't find him that funny either, I quite like Car Pool Karaoke, when he's not overpowering the singer/s.

Yes! I quite like the Carpools but more because of the concept and because of the guests. I hate when he sings over them and everyone's like "omg who knew James Cordon could sing?!?!" when in fact he can only just hold a tune.

This is Ariana's sole placing in Pitchfork's best singles of the decade - at #48!

All of Ariana's output has been released this decade so a lot of songs would be higher than 'thank u, next' for me. But I can't deny the impact it had!

Posted by: Jordan Lee Oct 8 2019, 08:35 PM

It’s definitely grown in my affections.

I was underwhelmed at this at first and I couldn’t see how this was her long awaited first #1 in like 4 years and her first #1 in the states.

I love it now but it’s not the best thing she’s put out no way.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Oct 8 2019, 11:10 PM

I'm sorry, but to include that over so many of the other singles she's put out? What drugs are they on?

This continues to be her dominating song in end of decade lists. As high as #7 in Billboard's '100 Best Songs of the 2010s' list ohmy.gif

QUOTE
When Grande split up with SNL’s Pete Davidson after a very public whirlwind romance, the obvious thing to do was drop a tabloid-ready celebrity breakup diss track. Instead, Grande released one of the most generous breakup songs of all time — an ode to lessons learned and self-love set to a fluttery track that suggests a mind at peace already moving on to new discovery. She cycles through a list of relationship revelations, sounding light-years from the man-needing bubblegum-soul diva of only a couple of years ago. “Even almost got married/And for Pete, I’m so thankful,” she sings. Grande began work on the song in the midst of her relationship with Davidson, and she wrote several versions of the song, including one where they get married: “Then we broke up again, so we ended up going with that verse.” —J.D.

I’m still stunned this didn’t get the Grammy nominations!

Was it because Ariana herself submitted 7 rings or did the GRAMMYs pick that over this?

I honestly felt this had the pop solo performance win in the bag!

Metro have named this as one of the best music videos of the decade!

QUOTE
Compared to the days of Michael Jackson’s Thriller which was a global event, the appreciation for music videos has waned dramatically. No longer are we gathering round the TV watching MTV waiting for the latest mesmerising visuals to replay – we only have to tap a few letters into YouTube to watch our favourite artists on demand. Simply, music videos aren’t as much of an event as they once were. But crikey, we’ve had some smashing music videos over the past decade so thankfully, there are some artists who do still care. From all the celebrity cameos in Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next to the artistry of Beyonce’s Formation and the hidden messages in Childish Gambino’s This Is America, we’ve been well and truly spoiled with some iconic visuals.
QUOTE
Ariana Grande – Thank u, Next (2018)
Director: Hannah Lux Davis

After a rough couple of years, Thank U, Next was the emancipation Ariana needed and it became one of the biggest pop culture moments of the decade. Recreating Mean Girls? Brilliant. Having Kris Jenner play the ‘cool mum’? Genius.

Cameos: Kris Jenner, Elizabeth Gillies, Troye Sivan, Colleen Ballinger, Jonathan Bennett, Jennifer Coolidge, Matt Bennett

Hooray! Ariana was killing it with music videos last year.

Posted by: Jade Jan 12 2020, 01:08 PM

Truly killing it! It's interesting to note that 'no tears left to cry' passed 800 million streams this week, while also having around 800 million views on YouTube, but the 'thank u next' video on YouTube has less than half of the plays that it has on Spotify, with '7 rings' having 'only' 670 million YouTube views compared to its 1 billion Spotify milestone too. She's done well on YouTube for years now (a few of her older videos have 1 billion+ views) but now she has Spotify in the palm of her hand, skyrocketing there.

2 years ago today since her career went stratospheric. <3

Posted by: jlj Nov 3 2020, 11:48 AM

2 years wow! Doesn’t at all feel like it.

I’ve never U turned on a single of hers as much as I have this. Initially I was so confused at how this stormed to #1 here, in the US and across the world when none of her sweetener singles managed it and on half a weeks sales too!

I still think all the sweetener singles are better than this but I do now appreciate this. Back when I actually had Facebook the music video of this was being shared by pretty much all my friends too it was a huge pop culture moment and a defining moment of Ariana being the biggest person in the world at that moment releasing what would be a huge viral moment.
