BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Sam Smith - The Thrill of It All

Posted by: SeanGrey 23rd August 2016, 02:43 PM

After having not posted on social media lately using temporary images with the word "writing", Sam Smith updated his social media icons earlier to show the word "repairing". In an interview earlier this year he said he would be going into deeper and more meaningful lyrics for a second album, which I assume what the use of words are for clearly!

I know Sam doesn't get a lot of discussion but I'm certain hes approaching a release of something as it has been a while so I thought I'd create a topic.

Discuss? (If there are any Sam fans at all on here huh.gif)

Posted by: mdh 23rd August 2016, 02:46 PM

Oh for GODS sake, just as my life was getting better Sam comes along and ruins it. In all seriousness, I AM intrigued - I just hope he puts out a Money on my Mind style track not a Lay Me Down/Stay With Me/Song to commit suicide to.

Posted by: HarryEzra 23rd August 2016, 02:46 PM

I am a fan of his music bar The Writing's The Wall kink.gif but maybe not so much him as a person kink.gif

Posted by: Ryan. 23rd August 2016, 07:03 PM

He's very much in the same boat as Emeli for me, I am a fan of both of their music but they were so overexposed in their respective album campaigns that I just got fed up of them appearing on every single show possible.

I'm ready for Emeli to return as she has had a significant break, but I feel like Sam needs to wait until at least next summer.

NO!

Posted by: Joe. 23rd August 2016, 09:00 PM

Keep it.

Posted by: Scene 24th August 2016, 03:07 PM

I wouldn't say I'm excited about Sam's music but, with the right song, I can really be on board because his voice can be so good to listen to. 'Latch' wouldn't have been half the song it was for me if it wasn't for Sam's vocal. unsure.gif He did get really dreary though - I never took to SWM, I liked the A$AP Rocky version of INTOO and LMD just got on my nerves. The James Bond track was decent enough but his voice became grating after a while.

I think his voice is too divisive for him to remain a consistently popular, high-selling artist for more than a few years at a time.

Posted by: jakewild 24th August 2016, 03:18 PM

i actually like a bunch of his songs so I'm intrigued but it's always gonna come with the garbage he spews which completely ruins him

Posted by: Davidson 14th July 2017, 01:44 PM

Posted a picture on Instagram with the caption "filming - day 1".

Looking like it is possibly a video shoot so I am thinking we could be seeing this album come in Q4 and the lead single in the next few months.

Posted by: Lenny 14th July 2017, 02:04 PM

R&B/Urban? huh.gif

I'm intrigued, although wouldn't it make sense if the video was for his rumoured collaboration with Clean Bandit?

Posted by: John-James 14th July 2017, 02:47 PM

Will his career go in the same direction as Emeli? I'm hoping so kink.gif

"TPH - 50HR" uploaded onto his Facebook cover. Maybe album title?

His last album was in that forum.

I don't really get the hate for him as an artist/person but can see why people dislike the music for being a bit down beat at times.

Posted by: Juan Carlos 🌴 16th July 2017, 04:24 AM

FYI, "TPH - 50HR" stands for "The Pink House - 50 Heydon Road".

That said, if he does something like "Nirvana" or "Like I Can", I'm in.

I actually don't hate any of his songs bar Stay With Me (which is one of the worst songs ever). Like I Can, Lay Me Down & even his bond one were all quite good imo! He was certainly more tolerable than Ed Sheeran in the 2014-15 domination period.

That said, I won't exactly be rushing to hear this...

Posted by: Bjork 16th July 2017, 04:31 PM

isn't he also doing the new Clean Bandit one?

Posted by: JosephStyles 16th July 2017, 04:45 PM

I quite liked Sam's debut album, and I'm Not the Only One is a fantastic song, so I'm quite intrigued as to what he'll put out next. Let's pray he's less overexposed though laugh.gif

I think Sam Smith's second era could go the same way as Emeli Sande unless he comes back with a very strong opening single.

I feel like he established himself too well to have a floppy second era but I guess we will see!

QUOTE
The British singer/songwriter (born Samuel Frederick Smith) christened his second studio collection “TPH-50HR” (which means The Pink House 50 Heydon Road) and will release it in September via Capitol Records.

The highly-anticipated project reunites Smith with regular collaborator Jimmy Napes (born James Napier)

The follow-up to 2014’s “In the Lonely Hour” reportedly boasts additional songwriting contributions from Levi Lennox (FKA twigs), Rachel Furner (Craig David), Jason “Poo Bear” Boyd (Kelly Rowland), Sophie “Frances” Cooke (Meghan Trainor) and Iain James (Olly Murs).

Among the producers expected to appear on the album are Malay (Frank Ocean), Cass Lowe (Sinead Harnett), Two Inch Punch (Rag’n’Bone Man), Martin Sjolie (Charlotte OC), Paul Epworth (John Legend), Fred Cox (Grace Carter), Joel Little (Lorde), Timbaland (Beyonce) and Fraser T. Smith (Stormzy).

Posted by: Liаm 15th August 2017, 04:39 PM

Some huge names there so it looks they're are trying to set him in good steed for the new era but I am dreading it because his voice is so hideous it's nigh on imossible to make him sound good laugh.gif

What an awful album name. Hopefully it gets changed laugh.gif
That said, I'm interested to hear the way his songs will go given those producer names!

Posted by: ML Hammer95 15th August 2017, 07:43 PM

Looking forward to this! With the right production and sound, he does have some very good songs in his back catalogue.

Sam is the male Jessie J of this site, I'm sure his critics outweigh his fans.

I do hope the campaign for this album follows similar suit like In The Lonely Hour with plenty of post album activity and success.

To my beautiful fans,

First of all I want to say thank you. Thank you for being so patient and letting me have the past year to really escape into my mind and write music so freely. I feel so rejuvenated and have so many stories I can't wait to tell you. I have missed you all desperately and a day hasn't gone by when I haven't been looking at all your comments & dreaming of singing with you all again. The wait is nearly over. Something is coming very very very very soon. I am scared & excited at the same time. I've poured my soul and heart into this record. Love you all and see you in the not so distant future.

I think that's starting to become the case, labels are splashing their cash on Spotify promo as that's the best way to get their song up the chart.

Posted by: StillJupiter 1st September 2017, 12:41 PM

I wonder how or if he'll incorporate his sexuality more into his music this time round. After Olly Alexander's statements about pronoun use in songs it feels like the landscape there has changed a bit.

I always felt like Sam Smith's first era tried to keep that under wraps a bit more. He wasn't closeted, no, but he wasn't drawing attention to it either.

Posted by: Liаm 1st September 2017, 12:54 PM

The music video of the first single comes out on September 15 and the album will be out on November 3.

The info comes from http://pulsemusic.proboards.com/post/6255745/thread. As I mentioned in the Kelly Clarkson thread, Olly is the source, so the information he posts is credible.

I quite liked the content on his first album but he does have a great voice which has lended itself perfectly to tracks like La La La and Omen, outside of his lead material. I wouldn't object to him featuring on some stuff once this campaign is over like he did with ITLH to branch out a bit.

Selena did with Bad Liar but it wasn't the actual video, it was sort of a basic this'll do until we have the real one thing, it sounds weird but it was kind of in between a lyric and real video laugh.gif It was the sort of basic video you'd put behind a lyric video if it wasn't animated.

Zero development or progression then. I mean I get 'if it ain't broke' etc. but I just don't see the point if it sounds EXACTLY the same as all his other songs. Other mega stars like Adele and Ed Sheeran (much as I hate the latter) have at least progressed enough with each album to still sound fresh albeit still keeping that signature sound, it's perfectly possible to do so it's sad to see that the response here is 'nah, they lapped it up the first time, no need to change anything'. Also sad to see it's actually working :/

I don't think it is fair to comment on the progression just yet because we haven't heard the whole album yet and this is only one single. I think it was important for the lead single for him to come back exactly with the type of music that resonated and made 2 million people buy his debut to kick the campaign off in a secure way. Safe maybe, but they can always take risks further down the line with his sound as Like I Can, for example, is so different to anything else on his debut and that worked pretty well imo so there is still time.

I'm quite liking this too. He did become very over-exposed during 2014/15, but I've always liked his voice. The songs people hated were the ones that stuck around for ages.

Posted by: THEO. 19th September 2017, 11:12 AM

I really dislike him. I don't think it's quite 'bonus track' from the last album but it definitely feels like I've already heard it 100 times before - in 2014. So disappointing as he could have done something a bit more original as the label were obviously willing to spend the money on buying the #1 anyway. I really can't believe his name is amongst artists like Blondie, Queen and Britney with six UK #1s but I guess JB also got his sixth this year too laugh.gif sad.gif

Sadly, I don't think this will be the last #01 for him either.

Posted by: cqmerqn 19th September 2017, 11:19 AM

He's very unlikeable

Posted by: lewistgreen 19th September 2017, 11:28 AM

I think it's more because he's doing dreary, downtempo songs compared with when we were introduced to him featuring on Disclosure / Naughty Boy tracks. His voice really suits a more uptempo vibe and I'm hoping the album is not just a copy of his debut!

I was thinking earlier how I feel like it might be his last actually, curiosity comeback sales are now gone and they weren't anywhere near as big as people expected. It's week two and Dua looks already on his tail. It'll be a big era but not huge and will pave way for a smaller era next time.

This. Seeing the posts about it in the Chart Forum, I actually thought it was going to be something new for him but it really isn't. So fed up of his and Ed Sheeran's brands of 'pop'.

The album cover is horrible. I feel bad for saying it because it literally is just his face but I just find it terrible.

Also, howling at Pray being literally like a combination of all his singles when it was being made out as the most unique thing ever. Has Sam made his own Buzzjack account?? 👀

I just saw the cover for this and omg Sam you need to know when to get in a professional who will design something that isn't you.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 8th October 2017, 01:26 AM

The cover really is awful (and like Froot, I do feel a bit bad for saying this, given that it's literally his head/face 😬 ). Most head-only artwork is uninspired looking in fairness, but Sam's really taken it to a new level of boring... black and white picture on a white background.

Not that it affects me much, given I won't be buying it. heehee.gif The thought of this artwork on a vinyl though... drama.gif

Just listened to "Burning" - wasn't he supposed to have had a change in sound? If you thought "Too Good At Goodbyes" was dull then "Burning" will redefine what dull means.

Essentially a song about smoking too much because of feeling sad and depressed, possibly hinting at smoking weed (I zoned out to be honest) - Sam is clearly SO cool rolleyes.gif

I quite like "Pray" though - and a couple of the remixes of "Too Good At Goodbyes" are actually excellent - the DJ Mike D Mixshow Edit is the version I think they should've gone for as the main version, while the Laibert remix turns it into an absolute banger.

Its ironic that it is called 'The Thrill Of It All' when Sam Smith's style of music I am sure most of us will agree being mostly easy listening and gentle you would really describe as 'thrilling'!

(I need to hear the album as I personally loved his debut)

I loved his debut album but I wasn't impressed by anything that was available pre-album release. Listening to the New Music Friday playlist on Spotify though, 'No Peace' with YEBBA is really, really good! Gives me a glimmer of hope there will be a couple of other gems on the album.

Sam in general gets far too much hate for one silly mistake in an acceptance speech and singing about his heartbreak and relationship, how dare he.

That aside, this is a pleasant listen. It feels very different to his debut aside one or two tracks (see below) but here is my initial first listen:

08 Too Good At Goodbyes: this one has really grown on me since it's release.

06 Say It First: I love the lyrics in this and sounds pretty different from ITLH in terms of production and feels very stripped back but the tone feels familiar

07 One Last Song: So very Amy Winehouse. Glad hes got at least one song so far that is very different to his previous sound

04 Midnight Train: Can see this growing but pretty snoozy on first listen

08 Burning: I love this! That piano is beautiful...even if it is a song about him smoking laugh.gif

09 Him: fantastic. That beat, the choir, the sentiment, brilliant

07 Baby, You Make Me Crazy: lovely listen, again another self explanatory title

08 No Peace (Featuring YEBBA): This one is interesting after the documentary hearng Abbey talk about it and the inspiration behind it for her and how it came to be written

05 Palace: Pretty similar to Midnight Train but probably feels like the most ITLH track out of the ones so far?

08 Pray: Similar to Him, love the choir too

04 Nothing Left For You: Pretty boring to be honest which ruins the decent run since Burning

05 The Thrill Of It All: pleasant to listen to but definitely wanted more

07 Scars: strings intro wub.gif feels very acoustic and natural

05 One Day At A Day: similar to the title track

Posted by: Jonjo 3rd November 2017, 07:39 PM

Nah. His voice his horrendously whiny and a bit too much for me, personally. The acceptance speech thing is just amusing!

Edit: oh and I find the album just as bland and basic as RagNBone Man's tbh. sad.gif (I say this as someone who actually thought his debut was decent, for the most part)

'Like I Can' remains his absolute best for me!
