After having not posted on social media lately using temporary images with the word "writing", Sam Smith updated his social media icons earlier to show the word "repairing". In an interview earlier this year he said he would be going into deeper and more meaningful lyrics for a second album, which I assume what the use of words are for clearly!
I know Sam doesn't get a lot of discussion but I'm certain hes approaching a release of something as it has been a while so I thought I'd create a topic.
Discuss? (If there are any Sam fans at all on here )
Oh for GODS sake, just as my life was getting better Sam comes along and ruins it. In all seriousness, I AM intrigued - I just hope he puts out a Money on my Mind style track not a Lay Me Down/Stay With Me/Song to commit suicide to.
I am a fan of his music bar The Writing's The Wall but maybe not so much him as a person
He's very much in the same boat as Emeli for me, I am a fan of both of their music but they were so overexposed in their respective album campaigns that I just got fed up of them appearing on every single show possible.
I'm ready for Emeli to return as she has had a significant break, but I feel like Sam needs to wait until at least next summer.
NO!
Keep it.
I wouldn't say I'm excited about Sam's music but, with the right song, I can really be on board because his voice can be so good to listen to. 'Latch' wouldn't have been half the song it was for me if it wasn't for Sam's vocal. He did get really dreary though - I never took to SWM, I liked the A$AP Rocky version of INTOO and LMD just got on my nerves. The James Bond track was decent enough but his voice became grating after a while.
I think his voice is too divisive for him to remain a consistently popular, high-selling artist for more than a few years at a time.
i actually like a bunch of his songs so I'm intrigued but it's always gonna come with the garbage he spews which completely ruins him
Posted a picture on Instagram with the caption "filming - day 1".
Looking like it is possibly a video shoot so I am thinking we could be seeing this album come in Q4 and the lead single in the next few months.
R&B/Urban?
I'm intrigued, although wouldn't it make sense if the video was for his rumoured collaboration with Clean Bandit?
Will his career go in the same direction as Emeli? I'm hoping so
"TPH - 50HR" uploaded onto his Facebook cover. Maybe album title?
(in))(T)he (p)?????? (H)our, possibly?
Why is Sam Smith in the R&B/Urban section?
No one wants new music from him.
keep it
omg no we don't want this topic, trash can it is xxx
Best place for him and his career tbh
FYI, "TPH - 50HR" stands for "The Pink House - 50 Heydon Road".
That said, if he does something like "Nirvana" or "Like I Can", I'm in.
You all have no taste when it comes to Sam Smith, I can't wait for his new music !
I actually don't hate any of his songs bar Stay With Me (which is one of the worst songs ever). Like I Can, Lay Me Down & even his bond one were all quite good imo! He was certainly more tolerable than Ed Sheeran in the 2014-15 domination period.
That said, I won't exactly be rushing to hear this...
isn't he also doing the new Clean Bandit one?
I quite liked Sam's debut album, and I'm Not the Only One is a fantastic song, so I'm quite intrigued as to what he'll put out next. Let's pray he's less overexposed though
I think Sam Smith's second era could go the same way as Emeli Sande unless he comes back with a very strong opening single.
I feel like he established himself too well to have a floppy second era but I guess we will see!
Someone hold me
Paul Epworth has worked on some massive and best of Adele's discography so I can't wait for his input on this!
The apocalypse really is nigh.
Lead single must be really close then.
Some huge names there so it looks they're are trying to set him in good steed for the new era but I am dreading it because his voice is so hideous it's nigh on imossible to make him sound good
that title is dreadful!
Well, that's the most pretentious title I've heard in a long time
Oh dear
Looks more like his car licence plate lmao
Even just being called Heydon Road or Heydon, or the town name, makes more sense
What an awful album name. Hopefully it gets changed
That said, I'm interested to hear the way his songs will go given those producer names!
Looking forward to this! With the right production and sound, he does have some very good songs in his back catalogue.
What a cunttastic album name.
OMG JOSEPH! License plate
Sam is the male Jessie J of this site, I'm sure his critics outweigh his fans.
I do hope the campaign for this album follows similar suit like In The Lonely Hour with plenty of post album activity and success.
Sam Smith is the biggest twat in pop
i think it should have been called 'Cancelled' or 'ASDA Whoops! Sticker'
I'm guessing he was the first person ever to live in a pink house.
but is the title confirmed? sounds like a provisional working title
From his mailer:
And people think Taylor Swift is up herself.
Savage
good he's feeling rejuvenated lol how he writes
very very very very soon means this Friday I guess??
Be within the next few weeks most likely, yes. I'm sure it's been mentioned in here about a supposed September release.
i mean WHO hasn't been waiting patiently JUST waiting for his new single?! we've all been SO understanding of his time lapse...we're such good fans omg
Something new (likely the lead single "Too Good At Goodbyes") will be out next week.
it's also on the official charts' website but no title yet
Sam is expected to release his new single on September 8, which will serve as the lead track from his forthcoming second album.
I heard a rumour that he is collaborating with Clean Bandit
Single (and Spotify deal) https://twitter.com/samsmithworld/status/903531146214080512/. Really not looking forward to this but as others have said, I hope he performs similarly to Emeli's recent singles.
I think it's heading straight for the top five especially with the Spotify deal. Not expecting an instant #1 but it should do much better than Emeli.
wonder if this will also be added as song #1 on hot hits spotify and all possible playlists like Taylor was... maybe all new big releases will do that from now on
I wonder how or if he'll incorporate his sexuality more into his music this time round. After Olly Alexander's statements about pronoun use in songs it feels like the landscape there has changed a bit.
I always felt like Sam Smith's first era tried to keep that under wraps a bit more. He wasn't closeted, no, but he wasn't drawing attention to it either.
I've got a horrible feeling he's going to do an Ed Sheeran this era rather than an Emeli Sande
At least the album title gets me one step closer to accessing his bank account to reclaim some of my money.
I've got a good feeling he's going to do an Adele and beat the critics with a fab second album
The music video of the first single comes out on September 15 and the album will be out on November 3.
The info comes from http://pulsemusic.proboards.com/post/6255745/thread. As I mentioned in the Kelly Clarkson thread, Olly is the source, so the information he posts is credible.
Half interested to hear what a Sam Smith and Stargate collab sounds like.
Unlike many on here, I can appreciate his talent. He does have an undeniably great voice, it is just that most of the material from his first album was offensively dull.
He posted some lyrics on Twitter.
"Every time you hurt me,
The less that I cry"
🦆
the album title strikes me as one of those tacky number plates nouveau riche people have on their hideously obscene sports cars and you think...what a dick.
what a lyrical reveal as well
Lead single confirmed to be "Too Good at Goodbyes".
He's also on Grimmy's show Friday so that's a possible insta-add although not guaranteed.
is it gonna be an upbeat number or a ballad? guess the former...
On Radio 1 now
It's exactly what I thought he'd come back with. Yawn.
I was hoping he'd do something vaguely different.
Sam has confirmed on Radio 1 that this is definitely not the album title
It pleasant enough. I am always a sucker for choirs so that lifts it tensfold.
I think it is very safe though and I can't see it being a massive hit. I think people will get bored of the predictable nature and he will definitely have a sophomore slump.
It's very boring, expected, Sam Smith.
but i thought the 1st single was produced by Stargate??? it's not this I guess
There's a video for this on Spotify; don't think it's the actual music video but it's the first time I've seen Spotify do this.
The song is okay but it is too safe. I was hoping for some good, slightly upbeat production from his lead too which we didn't get and the lyrics are a bit unimaginative and simple.
it's not a bad song at all but I can see it getting boring fast like Stay With Me did, but hopefully it won't get quite that big anyway.
I like it too It is exactly what you'd expect from him but I was a fan of his last album so this is quite nice too in a could've-been-a-bonus-track kind of way. I could see myself getting bored if he doesn't change it up soon but I'm still here for this sound for now.
It is pleasant as Davidson said. It does feel In The Lonely Hour bonus track material on first listen though.
This isn't QUITE as bad as expected but I'll never listen out of choice and it is pretty dull. There's been no progression from In The Lonely Hour, I wn't hold out hope for another Latch or La La La which are the only songs of his I like.
Zero development or progression then. I mean I get 'if it ain't broke' etc. but I just don't see the point if it sounds EXACTLY the same as all his other songs. Other mega stars like Adele and Ed Sheeran (much as I hate the latter) have at least progressed enough with each album to still sound fresh albeit still keeping that signature sound, it's perfectly possible to do so it's sad to see that the response here is 'nah, they lapped it up the first time, no need to change anything'. Also sad to see it's actually working :/
It wouldn't get me on board as a fan I'm afraid.
I actually really like this and I wasn't expecting to tbh.
Decent song, a lot better than some of the dross in the Chart atm (like the current #1 single).
I'm always really surprised to see the hate that Sam Smith gets online. I actually think he's great - love his voice and I always have a connection to many of his songs. Lay Me Down has really helped me through a difficult time recently.
Liking his new single, can't wait for the album.
I really dislike him. I don't think it's quite 'bonus track' from the last album but it definitely feels like I've already heard it 100 times before - in 2014. So disappointing as he could have done something a bit more original as the label were obviously willing to spend the money on buying the #1 anyway. I really can't believe his name is amongst artists like Blondie, Queen and Britney with six UK #1s but I guess JB also got his sixth this year too
Sadly, I don't think this will be the last #01 for him either.
He's very unlikeable
I think it's more because he's doing dreary, downtempo songs compared with when we were introduced to him featuring on Disclosure / Naughty Boy tracks. His voice really suits a more uptempo vibe and I'm hoping the album is not just a copy of his debut!
Snakehips and Galantis remixes of Too Good At Goodbyes are out tomorrow
Both are good, but I think the Snakehips one edges it for me!
that title
it reminds me of a wi fi code to connect to virgin media
Not content with a Live Lounge Special, he's been announced as the latest artist to have an 'Audience with...' programme on BBC One Hosted by Fearne Cotton, filming takes places 17th October.
Snakehips has better sound, but I don`t like that Sam`s voice was changed with effects too much.
How on earth has he managed to get Brandon Flynn (Justin from 13 Reasons Why).
Everyone Prays in the End is apparently out tomorrow
The album is called The Thrill Of It All and the info comes from http://pulsemusic.proboards.com/post/6294983/thread.
that title is even worst that the working title :/ so is the one out tomorrow just a grat?? or a 2nd single proper?
Album tracklisting is slowly being revealed overnight. We've had the first 5 tracks so far
it’s really like if chris maloney had been ‘discovered’ when young and this is the path he would have gone down
'Pray' is better than 'Too Good At Goodbyes' but it is still predictable and not exciting in the slightest.
Lmao the way they've gone they're sounding like it's a post disco paradigm defining anthem and it's the same old shite It sounds like an Emeli Sande reject for her 2nd album yet because it's him it'll smash again.
agree, i read this was the much-talked Timbaland track and was expecting a kinda Maneater re-invention but alas...
That confirms it, it's going to be a whole album of the same old shit.
Definitely not a fan of the album title - In The Lonley Hour is one of the best album titles of recent years, imo.
Excited at the prospect of a tour coming though!
The album cover is horrible. I feel bad for saying it because it literally is just his face but I just find it terrible.
Also, howling at Pray being literally like a combination of all his singles when it was being made out as the most unique thing ever. Has Sam made his own Buzzjack account?? 👀
He's got such a strange head to body proportion. I feel like his head is way too big for his body! :/
I just saw the cover for this and omg Sam you need to know when to get in a professional who will design something that isn't you.
The cover really is awful (and like Froot, I do feel a bit bad for saying this, given that it's literally his head/face 😬 ). Most head-only artwork is uninspired looking in fairness, but Sam's really taken it to a new level of boring... black and white picture on a white background.
Not that it affects me much, given I won't be buying it. The thought of this artwork on a vinyl though...
UK tour dates finally announced! Only doing seven shows which I think is not enough, imo. I can imagine they'll announce a few more shows if these sell out, which I expect them to.
'Burning' is out tomorrow.
Just listened to "Burning" - wasn't he supposed to have had a change in sound? If you thought "Too Good At Goodbyes" was dull then "Burning" will redefine what dull means.
Essentially a song about smoking too much because of feeling sad and depressed, possibly hinting at smoking weed (I zoned out to be honest) - Sam is clearly SO cool
I quite like "Pray" though - and a couple of the remixes of "Too Good At Goodbyes" are actually excellent - the DJ Mike D Mixshow Edit is the version I think they should've gone for as the main version, while the Laibert remix turns it into an absolute banger.
Hope this album flops
Listening party is happening at 9am on Friday on Radio 1. Sam's going to be on the Breakfast Show choosing his favourite tracks from the album.
One Last Song has got to be a contender for one of the worst songs of the year.
Its ironic that it is called 'The Thrill Of It All' when Sam Smith's style of music I am sure most of us will agree being mostly easy listening and gentle you would really describe as 'thrilling'!
I think most of Buzzjack will rather call Sam Smith's music hard listening because it's hard to listen too
(I need to hear the album as I personally loved his debut)
I loved his debut album but I wasn't impressed by anything that was available pre-album release. Listening to the New Music Friday playlist on Spotify though, 'No Peace' with YEBBA is really, really good! Gives me a glimmer of hope there will be a couple of other gems on the album.
Sam in general gets far too much hate for one silly mistake in an acceptance speech and singing about his heartbreak and relationship, how dare he.
That aside, this is a pleasant listen. It feels very different to his debut aside one or two tracks (see below) but here is my initial first listen:
08 Too Good At Goodbyes: this one has really grown on me since it's release.
06 Say It First: I love the lyrics in this and sounds pretty different from ITLH in terms of production and feels very stripped back but the tone feels familiar
07 One Last Song: So very Amy Winehouse. Glad hes got at least one song so far that is very different to his previous sound
04 Midnight Train: Can see this growing but pretty snoozy on first listen
08 Burning: I love this! That piano is beautiful...even if it is a song about him smoking
09 Him: fantastic. That beat, the choir, the sentiment, brilliant
07 Baby, You Make Me Crazy: lovely listen, again another self explanatory title
08 No Peace (Featuring YEBBA): This one is interesting after the documentary hearng Abbey talk about it and the inspiration behind it for her and how it came to be written
05 Palace: Pretty similar to Midnight Train but probably feels like the most ITLH track out of the ones so far?
08 Pray: Similar to Him, love the choir too
04 Nothing Left For You: Pretty boring to be honest which ruins the decent run since Burning
05 The Thrill Of It All: pleasant to listen to but definitely wanted more
07 Scars: strings intro feels very acoustic and natural
05 One Day At A Day: similar to the title track
Nah. His voice his horrendously whiny and a bit too much for me, personally. The acceptance speech thing is just amusing!
Edit: oh and I find the album just as bland and basic as RagNBone Man's tbh. (I say this as someone who actually thought his debut was decent, for the most part)
'Like I Can' remains his absolute best for me!
Wish he sang more uptempos :/
👀 🚮
oh wow
what a star <33333
The first openly gay man to cover the NME whilst grabbi...
^
With slight trepidation, I'll give his new album a go soon. Lol at how he's described it "(like) having sex with your sadness"
shouldn't radiohead be credited on Midnight train, it's the most blatant Creep rip-off
I've ever heard, the start is identical, the same chords thru the song
come on Thom, go sue him!!!!!!!
Out of album tracks I really like No Peace, Say It First and Nothing Left For You oh and Scars!
Suprise this hasn’t been posted but his Carpool Karaoke came out this week. It featured Fifth Harmony at the end .
I think this is a great follow up to his first album - I really like Sam and don't understand the hate he gets on here. Looking forward to seeing him at the 02 next year.
Couldn't care less about anything he's done in the past lmao - I know he's not a bad person, but I strongly dislike nearly every song on this album. It's absolutely awful.
Loved the BBC special too although I felt it was too heavy on ITLH tracks. Burning, Him, Pray, One Last Song, No Peace and Too Good At Goodbyes have been on repeat, absolutely brilliant!
Currently #3 in the midweeks with 8k. Ha.
Huge flop, will be lucky to do 30k this week.
Do me a favour and stop screaming flop in every Sam post whether it be here or in chart forum
Two months on from the lead single and the next single not even having taken off is nothing to scream flop at at this stage of the campaign
No surprises here that the album has already gone Gold this week following its impressive first week sales placing it just under getting that accolade.
Does anyone else think he sounds like he has a cold?
I've only heard 3 songs from this, but it seems shoddily written in a "I need to write SOMETHING, my record label are expecting me to put something out" kind of way.
the album should be called No Thrill At All :/
Honestly the video is a bit dull. Midnight Train and No Peace should be the next singles.
Pray is the 3rd single. Video has been shot as well.
A new version of "Pray" with Logic is expected to be released soon. Two version (clean and explicit, I guess) have been registered on PPL Repertoire.
oh my, really? with Logic? :/
I’m probably in the minority here
But
HYPE!!! Hopefully it’s more than just the typical rapper guest verse but even if it is I imagine this will still be great, Pray is alright but OLS was a lot better
Probably the record company realized that there is not a strong single to push the album...
Quite please we're getting Pray as a proper single now!
Well I like it.
Got to say I’m really liking Logic on Pray I think he elevates the song quite a bit actually. I can see it possibly being a proper hit now .
The song is quite boring tbh but the bits with Logic are better
House legend MK has done a remix of Pray which is out tomorrow. Really liked what he did with Money On My Mind a few years back so I hope this is just as good.
Pray is def the best thing he has released from this album for me, makes me want to listen to it for the first time!
Agreed Steve, to the extent it's the best thing I've heard of the 3 singles I have no desire to listen to the album, and I liked "In The Lonely Hour".
Also the MK remix is not doing anything for me :/
Hello!
I was not a fan of Sam Smith before but since I heard “Too good at Goodbyes”, I fell in love with him and started to look up his songs “Pray” is another favourite of mine. I was not even aware there would be a new version. How do you guys find it? A lot of times, I am sceptical about these tracks but I end up loving them afterwards.
Can Pray hurry up and be a hit already.
This era is over already
When hes on a third single with a platinum album, its hardly over!
I'm not a fan of Pray when Logic is on it, the album version is superior for me imo.
Friction Remix is out today which has really brought this track to life!
That remix makes the song so much more enjoyable for me. The original is alright - but it's all very Sam Smith by numbers which is pretty dull these days. So refreshing hearing a DnB beat again!
