What a great week for One Direction with WMYB re-peaking and One Thing getting them their second entry. biggrin.gif At times like this though I realise how much of a effect airplay has with it holding WMYB back to #19 after it got #7 on digital songs.

It seems intentional sending the song so late to radio - the album debuted at #1 purely baed on social media, and now airplay will rise and people will hear the song and buy the album/song for what it is.

Mary J. Blige still lingering sad.gif where did Estelle's Thank You go after its week at #100 sad.gif

Great to see Calvin Harris & 1D climb into the Top 20! biggrin.gif

New peaks on the British Invasion front for The Wanted, Calvin Harris, One Direction and Ellie Goulding, good good. Good to see Rumour Has It back on the climb as well as Rolling In The Deep and Someone Like You continuing to hold in the top 40 (RITD now outright 5th longest chart runner ever and will become joint 4th if it manages another week, then joint 3rd with one more).

Nice climb as well for Shake It Out and great to see 'One Thing' becoming a second (and first decent kink.gif) hit for One Direction, then Set Fire To The Rain, Domino, Paradise and Princess Of China are holding up well (the latter seems to have lost its purpleness). SFTTR is benefiting LOADS from airplay, it's not top 10 on Digital Songs and not even top 50 on On-Demand Songs, so for it to be #4 is very impressive.

Alex Clare fell just short of the Hot 100, but he's now in the top 40 on iTunes (albeit a bit lower than he was before) so he should hopefully climb in. Gary Go should be in purple on his 'Cinema' feature in the Bubbling Under as well. That seems to have been on Bubbling Under FOREVER without cracking the Hot 100 yet - one day. It's back down to #120 on iTunes though after going top 100 earlier in the week so maybe it won't make the Hot 100 sad.gif

Aside from commenting on the progress of the British Invasion tongue.gif Another week at the top for fun., it's looking to be a long haul for them as their airplay is rapidly increasing and nowhere near peaking, then they're still pulling away from the pack on digital sales where they already have an enormous lead. And of course they're #1 on On-Demand Songs which we also have to consider now. The only way I see them losing #1 any time soon is if Gotye suddenly almost doubles his sales laugh.gif

Great to see Wild Ones becoming another top 10 hit for Flo Rida, Train climbing into the top 15, Usher climbing (back?) into the top 50 and finally 'HYFR (Hell Ya Fucking Right)' back in the top 100 biggrin.gif

(Sorry for the TL;DR-ness of this post).

Isn't that a new peak for Florence?
And great for Ellie too smile.gif

You're right, it is ohmy.gif Incredible that it's managed to reach 20 weeks on the Hot 100 without going higher than #72, I thought it had got at least as high as the 50s or so at some point. Of course it'll drop out next week because of the Hot 100's stupid rules though sleep.gif

I wonder what caused it to climb so much anyway?

It was used on Smash. I think.

Usher climbing (back?) into the top 50

#45 is its peak, hasn't been in top 50 before.

The BB hot 100 chart has become so slow and boring since the inclusion of streaming 2 weeks ago....
I can't believe One Direction are only at number 19 considering that their song is number 7 on Digital charts....

Still can't understand why 1D are getting more hype than the Wanted. The latter are #3 on Hot 100 having sold almost/over a million of their single, which is almost 10 times more than 1D?

Posted by: -Jay- 23rd March 2012, 02:34 PM

^ 'Glad You Came' has sold 1,186,000! biggrin.gif

Unfortunately for The Wanted, One Direction were the first to break a record (highest UK debut on the Hot 100 in 15 years). This automatically overshadowed The Wanted, who at the time had "only" just climbed to #23 in its sixth week, which has gone somewhat unnoticed in the media. Of course The Wanted flew up to #5 the next week and broke a record of their own, and this was reported - but coming one week later than 1D's achievement took a little of the shine off, I think.

Now One Direction have become the first ever UK group to chart straight in at #1 with a debut album - and the fact that not even The Beatles achieved this is a fact that the press are loving. It instantly sounds a lot more impressive than the #3 single achieved by The Wanted.

Not to say The Wanted haven't got good press coverage of their own, but from a cursory glance at Google, it's more gossip based than achievement based.

In my eyes both are doing extremely well, but for the general public it must look like One Direction have well and truly "cracking America" with the record breaking single & album... and now a tour.

The Hot 100 has always been slow and boring, streaming might intensify that even further but it's not a new thing laugh.gif The digital charts tend to be slow and boring as well to be fair.

yes, but at least we have high new entries on the Digital charts, some even top 5 and high climbers while in the Official Chart it's getting slower and slower since that silly On Demand chart was included...

Err, two weeks is a bit too soon to draw any conclusions on how a reformulation affects a chart. The Hot 100 has had loads of slow weeks...

Posted by: Eric_Blob 24th March 2012, 03:22 AM

^ Yeah, I was gonna say, two weeks is too short to draw such a strong conclusion like that (although you can draw the same conclusion with logic).

The inclusion of streaming would've actually SPED UP the chart last week, since the streaming data being added caused quite a few unusual jumps in the chart.

Gotye could get to #1 sooner than I expected. His radio airplay is still fairly low, but the Glee promotion is causing it to increase a lot in digital sales (and it turns out it does well in streaming, so that helps it now too).

Posted by: Jáhq 24th March 2012, 09:03 AM

^Gotye will also be on Saturday Night Live on April 14th, one week after One Direction so I reckon Gotye could get to #1 with One Direction maybe managing to peak at #2 as it's airplay shouldn't be holding it back as much by then.

but two weeks ago sales accounted for more than 70% of the BB Hot 100 which meant that a new entry at number 1 on the Digital Songs Chart would definitly lead to a new entry in the top 5 ( sometimes number 1) in the BB Hot 100, while now it's really harder since new songs have usually low airplay, which means that even a top 10 now isn't guaranteed for the number 1 selling song in the country!!!!

i mean why can't they just make a chart completely based on sales just like the rest of the world???? mad.gif
isn't sales what actually reflects the taste of the buying public????
if people don't like a song enough to spend 1.29$ to buy it, then why on hell should it chart???? blink.gif

Posted by: Sveriloquy 27th March 2012, 12:50 AM

Because a lot of people don't buy music anymore, duh? It's not as much of an indicator of popularity as it used to be with streaming services such as Spotify around now...

I'm feeling like a parrot but they do have a sales chart.

Hot 100 has always been different to sales chart. Its aim is to really reflect the popularity of songs hence the constant rule changes too.
