Heaven isn't dance, although it is disco inspired. Speaking of Emeli Sande I would consider 'Lifted' as borderline dance, but probably not eligible for the thread as both Emeli and Naughty Boy are usually R&B, not dance artists.

Haha, funnily enough I'd call some Naughty Boy songs dance songs - "La La La" is if "Symphony" is, and "Runnin'" is too! Or is it ohmy.gif

There are so many songs that could be debated here!

Runnin' is arguably dance I would say, not too far from a Sigma track in sound. 'La La La' is R&B/dancepop I would say.

I guess once an artist who starts off as dance becomes mainstream/popular, it's debatable as to whether they're still making 'dance' music. It's easier with those one (or two) off tracks such as Boston Bun's "Spread Love (Paddington)" or Au/Ra & CamelPhat's "Panic Room" this year because they're dance songs, that isn't the popular mainstream sound of the moment. Whereas Jonas Blue whose first 2/3 singles are arguably dance, crossed the line into pop by becoming prominent in mainstream/popular music. "Mama" and "Rise" are pop songs. I think anyway.

I would say Runnin' and La La La were pop. And Mama and Rise, although they do have 'drops', I would also call pop songs. And yes, Calvin Harris is obviously a dance producer but Slide and Feels probably aren't.

yes, End credits is amazing

Indeed, one of best drum and bass tracks to make the charts ever I think. I really like how dark and atmospheric it is and the beats are fierce too!

What about the future bass songs, I assume some of the less poppy sounding ones like Roses by The Chainsmokers and Rozes would be included if they made dance number 1 but the likes of Zedd's 'Stay' maybe not.

I'd include all Chainsmokers singles up to "Something Just Like This" (except from "Paris")... and to me "Stay" and "It Ain't Me" weren't dance songs. For me a song only qualifies as a dance/electronic single when they are under a certain BPM if they aren't mainstream - those songs featured well known established pop stars. Pop songs!

I definitely am happy to let Dan decide laugh.gif

Fortunately we won't have to worry about discussing those as both songs were beaten by other dance songs.

I think what we'll need to do is have a panel of 3-4 of us behind the scenes to vote on if we think songs should count and we'll have to try and be consistent with our definition of how dancey a song has to be to be considered a dance song. It'll take more thought than what the OCC clearly do when compiling their dance chart.

If you're interested coi you could join the team (even if just to vote and not do commentaries), you seem to be interested in this so that's just a suggestion.

But you've said that before drama.gif tongue.gif

Don't go giving us that deja vu (Freemasons Remix) again in the future bwoi!

(Also on the recent side: where Dan & I were alternating, and I'd prepared the next one in advance, you then posted a couple unexpectedly, which was annoying from my side because I'd prepared them to post already, just something to consider for the 2010s - if you're in, you're in - if you're out, you're out - just be clear & honest, no hard feelings or anything!)

Congratulations for finishing this epic thread - sorry that I haven't been commenting more, though I have always been reading. I know from the 1990s dance thread that it can become quite a chore to research and write about, but I found the whole thing thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding. I hope that you decide to continue with a thread that reviews dance number ones of the 2010s as there are some great periods still to discuss.

Thanks for persevering!

Thanks Doctor Dre - I will also echo my thanks to Dan, Snake and Ethan for the thread and to those who commented or read out of interest - love a bit of nostalgia, me! This was the first thing I got involved in on BuzzJack outside the chart thread.

Eric Prydz - Call On Me

Date 19th Sep 2004
9 Weeks
Official Chart Run 1-1-1-2-1-1-2-8-8-13-17-21-23-24-21-20-24-35-40-49-58-57-63-71-x(23)-75-x (25 weeks)

Apologies for the random bump, however I recently watched this video about “Call On Me” which explains the origins of the track- it even links back the 1990s dance thread through Spacedust and their 1998 #1 hit.

Well worth a watch:

I did see that. great video essay there.

I did mention the ‘original’ Together version in my write up back then but clearly didn’t clock that Prydz wasn’t the first to steal the idea and that Mr Spacedust had another try at ripping off Thomas Bangalter first. laugh.gif
