What do we think is going to be big next year then? Often the future hits are songs already out so let's speculate. Here are the first songs that come to my mind:
Snakehips - All My Friends [feat. Tinashe & Chance The Rapper]
House/RnB production duo Snakehips could be set for their breakthrough, which would also give Tinashe her long overdue first chart hit.
Mike Posner - I Took A Pill In Ibiza [SeeB Remix]
Yes, the same Mike Posner that made 'Cooler Than Me' a hit 5 years ago. Who knew he'd be set for another potential hit now?
Blinkie - Don't Give Up (On Love)
Could this finally smash in the new year after lingering around the bottom end of the chart for a while? I hope so, great song.
Zara Larsson - Lush Life
Zara coming for her second hit? Definitely if this gets pushed, I think.
DJ Fresh & High Contrast - How Love Begins [feat. Dizzee Rascal]
Seems obvious this will at least chart somewhere, possibly another top 10 for him?
Alessia Cara - Here
With this being a US top 10 hit and her on the Sound Of list, it seems very likely this will at some point be a hit.
I Took A Pill In Ibiza reminds me of my flop BJSC entry 'I Want You' by Wrabel. It's a strong remix, wondering how much longer the tropical house sound will continue to be popular though, seeing as a lot of these sub-genre dance trends often usually seem to last for a year or so.
I totally forgot we had this thread last year I need to read it again to see which slayed and which flopped. Hopefully my previous BJSC artist Snakehips can go big and DJ Fresh and Zara can go big also
With House music on its way out (RIP) and Garage music on its way back in (again!), it'll be interesting to see what's big next year in terms of dance tracks. I just hope we don't go back down the H Two O / T2 / Mike Delinquent route again because as it good as it was it now sounds terribly dated.
I know the singles from Tringle did practically nothing, but I still have faith that when JoJo finally releases the full studio version of MNEK produced 'Good Thing' that it could be a massive UK smash if pushed:
Would love it to be this year's 'Hideaway'. Maybe I'm being too optimistic, I just hope her team know what they are doing and are gearing this up as the massive lead single, as I so want 2016 to be her's for the taking.
OMG that Mike Posner song to be a HIT please
Dawin feat. Silento - Dessert
Guilty pleasure written all over this and already big in Australia. Should take off eventually.
Shift K3Y feat. BB Diamond - Gone Missing
If Garage does make a comeback next year, I'd expect there to be hits that sound similar to this one. Who knows, maybe even 'Gone Missing' could do something too, it's certainly good enough.
Frisco feat. Shakka - Different Kind
No audio for this yet, but I've heard it on late night 1Xtra and it sounds BIG. Watch this space...
Since when was garage meant to be making a comeback? must've missed the memo somewhere
I know the new Craig David song is doing half decently but I thought that was more down to the song being his first in absolute ages.
If this is the best that 2016 has to offer than I'll stick to my flop faves tbh
I hope Zara Larsson breaks through, everyone at work is obsessed with that girl on Never Forget You, so I can see Lush Life being a hit next month.
Hoping Snakehips and Zara Larsson make the breakthroughs they deserve! Also wouldn't mind Dawin becoming a hit, it's so much better than Watch Me!! Quite a few of the tips I have no heard yet.
garage is just a subgenre of house music with a HUGE overlap with deep/future variants~
John Gibbons ~ Your Love
M-22 ~ Inspiration
Matoma ~ Love You Right (feat. Nico & Vinz)
Bryson Tiller - Don't
This guy is blowing up in America and is in line for a big 2016. Getting Drake or The Weeknd vibes from him. Maybe not this song, but promising nevertheless. This type of R&B is proving popular right now.
How's the Mike Posner song gonna get round radio though? They're hardly going to play a song that goes "I took a pill in Ibiza..."
Will have to have a listen to some of the other songs mentioned in this thread though.
Spotify released a playlist overnight with their tip for 2016:
Jack Garratt
Samm Henshaw
Jones
HONNE
Gavin James
Nao
Will Joseph Cook
Mabel
Mura Masa
Anne-Marie
Blossoms
LÉON
Frances
Max Pope
Matoma
From the ones mentioned; Lush Life I think will be a definite Top 5 hit/potential #1 ('Uncover' could be a sizeable hit too if it's pushed), and Dessert/I Took a Pill will probably break through at some point
Wonder if Lukas Graham - 7 Years could become some sort of hit? Not sure how much that'll catch on in the UK but it could happen. The Vamps could finally grab a decent sized hit this era with Volcano. The Chainsmokers - Roses may take off like it has in the US. I'll try and think of more later on ~
On the topic of upcoming artists, i see Zara Larsson and Dua Lipa being among next year's big chart stars, and Loyle Carner possibly being a Mercury Prize contender (if he releases an album)
7 Years definitely has potential I think, and hopefully will get pushed at some point. If Ed Sheeran had sung a song like that it'd be big. Its doing well in Europe at the moment so it could certainly cross over.
Also:
Matt Simons - Catch & Release - been big in Europe so could catch on here.
Elle King - Ex's & Oh's - I know its just been added to the R1 playlist so it'd probably do well anyway but I can see this picking up steam after the New Year.
Really hope Lush Life is big! Such a jam. Really rooting for Exs And Ohs, Here and All My Friends too, all four need to be huge hits.
Surely this is going to be massive when pushed, absolutely incredible song
That Mike Posner song is already big here so watch it coming
Tinashe (Player could still smash)
Tori Kelly (I don't know why she hasn't had a hit yet!)
Nelly (feat. Jeremih) - The Fix (I doubt it tbh but it sounds like a hit and he has a UK tour coming up)
Janet Jackson (feat. Missy Elliott) - Burn It Up (ughhh one bit of promo and this would smash. Oh well)
Wishful thinking on my part
Most of the songs I thought would blow up (Yoga, Classic Man) didn't so don't listen to me
Fleur East iamspamspamamito smash next year
FGS Kitchannnn
Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff are touring next year! It would be good to see them get a hit
I reckon with the right exposure HONNE could be quite popular next year and really hope they are. They sound very much like if Sam Smith & Disclosure did a full album together with a hint of 80's thrown in for good measure.
Warm on a cold night is just flawless!
Yellow Claw & DJ Mustard feat. Ty Dolla $ign & Tyga - In My Room
I think this will be a hit. So catchy, gives me 'Turn Down For What' vibes.
Loving the video too of course!
I love Yellow Claw! I just feel that they need that one radio potential hit and In My Room seems like the most suitable choice because of the DJ Mustard feature/production.
New Single from DJ Zinc. Combines house and breakbeat with an infectious vocals and breakdown and is already being tipped as a big early 2016 dance crossover hit.
Adele.
I'm still waiting for Zak Abel to be huge. He has such an incredible, distinctive voice, and is a fantastic writer. He has quite a few songs out there now and so many of them are SO SO SO GOOD. I fully expected him to be shortlisted for BBC Sound of 2016 but unfortunately he appears to have not made the cut. Seriously though, listen to any of his stuff on Spotify/Soundcloud and you'll fall in love.
You may recognise his voice from Gorgon City's song Unmissable from 2014:
Not sure about new acts but I have a feeling/hope that Lana Del Ray could be one of those acts that benefits from the low sales climate in January and 'Honeymoon' will recover ahead of The Brits
that Mike Posner song sounds like a huge hit, and I think When Love Begins could be big (anything DJ Fresh releases becomes a semi-hit though, so)
frances and WSTRN will both have a top 5, I predict..
How about Stressed Out by Twenty One Pilots? It seems to be exploding in the US at the moment (top 5 on iTunes) so could be an alternative hit at some point.
Fast Car by Jonas Blue? It has zoomed top 3 on Australian iTunes randomly but considering he is British and it continues the House trend it wouldn't surprise me if it gets some support
These songs are bubblin' under in the Spotify top 200, could do well soon:
G-Eazy x Bebe Rexha - Me Myself & I
Alan Walker - Faded
This one's doing well in Australia and sounds like a potential hit
Marcus Marr & Chet Faker - The Trouble With Us
and as this hasn't been mentioned yet I may as well state the near-obvious (this is where I would also mention 'Light It Up' by Major Lazer, but that's already top 40 and climbing so seems a bit too obvious)
Kygo - Stay (feat. Maty Noyes)
DigitalSpy announced their tips for 2016:
Frances
HONNE
Mura Masa
Alessia Cara
Who Is Fancy
Dua Lipa
Jack Garratt
Nimmo
SG Lewis
Izzy Bizu
Where's last years thread so we can see how we did?
I wanna say "Cake By The Ocean" but that depends on how much it smashes in the US. It's literally just breaking through.
So most of those we predicted last year didn't come anywhere near smashing The sad thing is, the majority of those that we collectively predicted would be big weren't even pushed in the UK...radio are ignoring so many great songs with clear hit potential recently.
I mentioned Out Of The Woods by Taylor Swift...and it's only just being pushed as a single well over a year later!
It's a lot harder for any hit to break through now, more's the pity, and the few that do then hang around for ages as they become the only thing radio can play for the next whenever. This trend of having less total hits is pretty awful for the charts (and as such we need radio to die a swift death), I'd have been very happy for most of the songs in that thread to become hits over lots of what actually did.
We need a few of the songs in this thread to become hits and fast. All of them that I've heard sound like they'd fit in very well as a hit song.
Just heard and seen the video to 'Ain't Too Cool' by Lunchmoney Lewis - something tells me it could be HUGE this year, catchy and a stupid video (in a good way).
Bump! Here's some songs that could become big over the next few months...
Desiigner - Panda
Considering the rise this song has had in America, this could be the big US urban crossover hit over here this summer. Doesn't sound like a chart hit, but many would have thought the same about Trap Queen this time last year and this is proving very popular right now.
Bryson Tiller - Exchange
In all fairness, this has already been a hit - 70 million YouTube views and popular on Spotify. However, with a video incoming and Radio 1 support this could prove a surprise chart hit. I'm hoping so anyway, been one of my favourite songs for months. Gives me a 'Take Care' vibe.
Jay Sean feat. Sean Paul - Make My Love Go
Rising quickly on iTunes, early support from Capital and a music video in increasing rotation, I'd be very surprised if this didn't chart. The UK has a soft spot for Sean Paul and the 'Sorry'-esque beat should help this. Perfect for the warmer months.
Ty Dolla $ign feat. E-40 - Saved
Ty Dolla $ign is a man in demand right now and could exploit his success from his Fifth Harmony feature. This would seem the solid bet considering it's already in high rotation on KISS. Another DJ Mustard production, but one that seems slightly more upbeat to me and a chantable chorus. Worth keeping an eye on songs such as 'Wavy' and 'In My Room' too - I'd be shocked if he didn't have a top 40 single by this time next year!
WSTRN - Come Down
I know this is no 'In2', but early support from Capital should ensure this charts. Load of famous faces in the video and it does sound good in the sun!
Billon - Slave To The Vibe
A song just screaming out for some promotion! A highly infectious deep house song that's almost the love child of 'I Wanna Feel' and 'Alone No More', I can just tell this will sound good on the beaches of Malia this summer .
TroyBoi - And Wot?
Potential to be the club anthem of Summer 2016. Was surprised to see this added to the Capital playlist straight after release but I can't get this out of my head!
Major Lazer feat. Ty Dolla $ign, Kranium & WizKid - Boom
If rumour has it, this is the next Major Lazer single and it's not hard to see why. Still riding the crest of the 'Lean On' wave, this should do well.
Kevin Gates - 2 Phones
Blowing up in America, this could be the next viral rap hit. Huge sounding and could very well crossover here.
Blonde feat. Craig David - Nothing Like This
Of course this is already a chart hit. However, I think this has Top 5 written all over it!
Flo Rida feat. Jason Derulo - Hello Friday
Considering the previous chart success of the two artists and the sound of the song, this is almost a definite hit. Very catchy as you'd expect.
Ah yes, nice to check back on this i got 7 Years/I Took A Pill/Lush Life/Roses so not bad~
Some that have potential to do well in the coming months-
The Chainsmokers feat. Daya - Don't Let Me Down - a bit more basic and 'trashier' than Roses, so it makes sense the UK would prefer this one
Cheat Codes - Sex - another tropical house facelift of an older popular hit (though this isn't really a straight-up cover, so at least it's more inspired than the show me love/ain't nobody/fast car snoozefests we've had of late)
Nick Jonas feat. Tove Lo - Close - seems like this has had a great reception, sure to get strong airplay too
Frans - If I Were Sorry - the public love their light acoustic-y pop stuff at the moment, possibly another Swedish Eurovision song to challenge for the Top 10? (and based off Common Linnets a few years ago it may not even need to win the contest)
will.i.am feat. Pia Mia - Boys & Girls - it's a will.i.am single.
If they push it:
If they push it:
Also can see Hailee Steinfeld having a hit by the end of year but have no clue with what!
Also can see this taking off is he performs it on the voice :
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Dance Off (feat. Idris Elba & Anderson .Paak)
- as much as this annoys me it should do well, it sounds like chart material and has smashed in Australia
MAGIC! - Lay You Down Easy (feat. Sean Paul)
- I can't see this being too much of a hit, and I may be biased, but this sounds like it could sneak in the charts with a push, and I expect it will get some airplay as it is radio material. Think of it as a slightly worse but still quite good follow up to Rude.
Skrillex & Diplo - Mind (feat. Kai)
- this is great! And sounds like chart material - it's the kind of song Radio 1 and Capital (especially the latter) would kill, and with a bit of exposure I think this could be an absolute smash - maybe even Jack U's first number one after the resounding success of Where Are U Now?.
Walking On Cars - Speeding Cars
- not only is this a really good song, we're still due our annual male British guitar singer that gets a hit in the first half of the year (Hozier, George Ezra, Passenger, James Bay, it's basically a tradition ), and I think Heart have already played this - it's around the bottom ends of the iTunes top 50 at the moment and I have a feeling Radio 1 may give it a chance sooner or later.
Another couple:
Kungs & Cookin' on 3 Burners - This Girl. Its currently #1 French iTunes but can definitely see this crossing over In Europe during the Summer.
Peg Parnevik - Ain't No Saint. Currently #1 on Swedish Spotify, may well just stay a local hit but it certainly has the potential crossover to become a big hit
Probably a very slim chance but I'll post it just in case...
Already a year old and was on BBC Introducing last year, but I've been hearing it on the radio like every day which is unusual for a British artist that hasn't broke through in the UK. Basically the song title along makes me think it'll be the next Pompeii or Budapest but really I'd just like to see it do something in the UK or the US, sounds like a potential surprise hit to me.
These two I think have potential...
Also if a vocal is added to this I think it could be the follow-up to Faded:
These are ones I really want to make a sudden surge...
Apologies if any of these have already been posted.
Vigiland - Pong Dance
This is just a hit waiting to happen - it's a short song with some comedic value and a generic drop, so people are bound to like it - and it's actually quite good. It would be a missed opportunity if radios didn't get behind this, a good track which has so much potential.
Kat DeLuna feat. Jeremih - What A Night
If people hated the sample on 2015 hit 'Somebody', they'll despise this! Another catchy RnBass production and an infectious hook from Jeremih, this has been floating around KISS recently. If it gets promotion, could well be a hit.
This is quite good Hammer, I also liked the original
I'm hoping too that Yall - Hundred Miles can be a minor hit in the UK, really love it!
Considering Seeb is currently #1 with Mike posner I can see this probably impacting the charts over here, it's dominating on Streaming currently!
with summer looming - thought I'd bump this...
WHAT WILL BE BIG THIS SUMMER?
I think...
CAZZETTE vs AronChupa - She Wants Me Dead (feat. The High)
Cash Cash - How To Love (feat. Sofia Reyes)
...could both be big, with some support.
potential minor hits
just heard Naughty Boy is having a new single this summer featuring Ellie Goulding, could be big if it's another Runnin'
also heard RedOne is releasing a single under his name featuring Enrique Iglesias
also Pitbull has a song out this summer with Leona Lewis not sure if it's rumorology though but she could be back in the charts... at least in the itunes top 100
another potential BJSC hit turned actual hit - this just got a music video:
I doubt it'd do as well as it would a couple years ago but 'Me Minus You' making the charts or even the R1 playlist would be great!!
How did we do with these predictions then? Here were the hits, and the first to predict them as hits in brackets (there's no 'winner' as such here though, as some of these were quite obvious hits)
