So we've now got all the songs for the first semi final so it's time to get your Björkman hats on and start planning those all important running orders!

Posted by: AdamAloud 8th March 2019, 05:18 PM

01. Finland // Darude ft. Sebastian Rejman - Look Away
02. Montenegro // D-Moll - Heaven
03. Slovenia // Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl - Sebi
04. Belarus // ZENA - Like It
05. Hungary // Joci Pápai - Az Én Apám
06. Poland // Tulia - Pali Się (Fire Of Love)
07. Czech Republic // Lake Malawi - Friend Of A Friend
08. Serbia // Nevena Božović - Kruna
09. Cyprus // Tamta - Replay
10. Georgia // Oto Nemsadze - Sul Tsin Iare
11. Belgium // Eliot - Wake Up
12. Australia // Kate Miller-Heidke - Zero Gravity
13. Iceland // Hatari - Hatriđ Mun Sigra
14. San Marino // Serhat - Say Na Na Na
15. Greece // Katerine Duska - Better Love
16. Portugal // Conan Osíris - Telemóveis
17. Estonia // Victor Crone - Storm

Cyprus is the obvious opener but the fact that there are only 2 females in the second half and the fact it's quite a contender and usually Song 1 in Semi 1 doesn't qualify so I imagine Tamta will be left as late as possible. Iceland and Portugal could very well be closers but Estonia might be more of a safer bet?

Posted by: J▲hq 8th March 2019, 05:34 PM

I would die if a song called “Look Away” is chosen to open the live shows

Posted by: Conanderella 8th March 2019, 09:05 PM

as long as the biggest shock factors of the semi aka Portugal and Iceland are as far as possible from each other I'm good really. despite a couple of duds semi 1 is really THE SHIT this time around

Posted by: LexC 8th March 2019, 11:47 PM

I legit think this order would work near perfectly (LexC is a horn tooter confirmed)...

01 Czech Republic: Lake Malawi - Friend of A Friend
02 Montenegro: D Moll - Heaven
03 Belarus: ZENA - Like It
04 Hungary: Joci Papai - Az En Apam
05 Finland: Darude feat. Sebastian Rejman - Look Away
- AD BREAK -
06 Serbia: Nevena - Kruna
07 Poland: Tulia - Pali Sie
08 Slovenia: Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl - Sebi
09 Cyprus: Tamta - Replay
10 Portugal: Conan Osiris - Telemoveis
11 Georgia: Oto Nemsadze - Sul Tsin Lare
12 San Marino: Serhat - Say Na Na Na
13 Estonia: Victor Crone - Storm
- AD BREAK
14 Greece: Katerine Duska - Better Love
15 Iceland: Hatari - Hatriđ Mun Sigra
16 Belgium: Eliot - Wake Up
17 Australia: Kate Miller Heidke - Zero Gravity

- Czech Republic seems like the ideal "get the party started" song to open up the semi with and from their live performances I think they'd really be able to set the energy level for the show. Unintended consequence is they might be a little bit of a sacrificial lamb but
- Montenegro in the death slot because it's what that song deserves
- BLR - HUN - FIN are a good set of "could go either way" potential qualifiers and all have a nice saw-tooth effect. Darude's (kinda) name power merits him being late-ish on but not so much that you'd leave him to the last one in the half so he can go in slot 5 ahead of an ad break which'll be nice following what I'm presuming will be quite an elaborate staging set-up
- From there I worked backwards with Cyprus getting slot 9 and Slovenia being an "interesting" one to slot between two high impact songs with Poland in 7th.
- Serbia's a little buried in 6th but tbh it's got enough friends in this semi that it doesn't really need a good slot.
- Now the 2nd half is...interesting. To me the four "wildcards" are Iceland, Portugal and also San Marino and Australia and I don't think you can run any of those four next to each other or you'll end up with tonal whiplash. So the 2nd half is set up with that in mind. I like the idea of Portugal following Cyprus to signal that the show is "switching gears" and especially the first part of Telemoveis signals that pretty clearly
- Georgia put in between Portugal and San Marino to get memory holed
- After POR - GEO - SAN I think we need something safe but ultimately still poppy and uplifting and Estonia fits that role really well to take us into the 2nd ad break
- The best closer out of what's left is Australia I think, stuff that's usually left-field but still commercial/competitive tends to be the best type of stuff to close on.
- Hatari spaced with a song in between them and the Aussies
- I initially put Greece and Belgium the other way round but in hindsight I think Greece and Australia are a little bit too similar to really work next to each other so Belgium goes in song 16 as a little introspective moment in between the two bits of Euromadness. Greece, like Serbia, is qualifying no matter where it goes so it'll be fine after the ad break.

SEMI DEUX

01. Denmark // Leonora - Love Is Forever
02. Moldova // Anna Odobescu - Stay
03. Sweden // John Lundvik - Too Late For Love
04. Romania // Ester Peony - On A Sunday
05. Austria // Pćnda - Limits
06. Switzerland // Luca Hänni - She Got Me
07. Latvia // Carousel - That Night
08. Armenia // Srbuk - Walking Out
09. Ireland // Sarah McTernan - 22
10. Croatia // Roko - The Dream
11. Azerbaijan // Chingiz - Truth
12. North Macedonia // Tamara Todevska - Proud
13. Lithuania // Jurijus - Run With The Lions
14. Malta // Michela - Chameleon
15. Russia // Sergey Lazarev - Scream
16. Albania // Jonida Maliqi - Ktheju Tokës
17. The Netherlands // Duncan Laurence - Arcade
18. Norway // KEiiNO - Spirit In The Sky

Not really many openers in the first half, Luca perhaps but they'll need to space out the peen so gone with Denmark's little shitty ditty. Was difficult to choose between Norway and Malta for the closer but plumped for the former, Malta I think will benefit more from being surrounded by mediocre male ballads than closing the show imo.

Posted by: AdamAloud 11th March 2019, 10:30 AM

Israel will perform 14th in the grand final.

Posted by: cantthinkofaname 11th March 2019, 10:46 AM

Semi 1
- I think Czechia will open
- Cyprus will be last before the second half
- Australia will open the second half
- Iceland will finish the show

Posted by: LexC 15th March 2019, 03:18 PM

Oops realised I hadn't done the 2nd semi yet

01 Sweden: John Lundvik - Too Late For Love
02 Latvia: Carousel - That Night
03 Romania: Ester Peony - On A Sunday
04 Denmark: Leonora - Love Is Forever
05 Moldova: Anna Odobescu - Stay
- AD BREAK -
06 Austria: Paenda - Limit
07 Ireland: Sarah McTernan - 22
08 Armenia: Srbuk - Walking Out
09 Switzerland: Luca Hanni - She Got Me
10 Croatia: Roko - The Dream
11 Lithuania: Jurijus - Run With The Lions
12 Albania: Jonida Maliqi - Ktheju Tokës
13 Russia: Sergay Lazarev - Scream
- AD BREAK
14 Azerbaijan: Chingiz - Truth
15 North Macedonia: Tamara Todevska - Proud
16 Malta: Michela Pace - Chameleon
17 Netherlands: Duncan Laurence - Arcade
18 Norway: KEiiNO - Spirit In The Sky

Posted by: Conanderella 15th March 2019, 03:41 PM

Malta-Netherlands-Norway would be a perfect way to end the show with 2-5 being a long ass toilet break.

San Marino the Semi One show closer asdfghjk!

Posted by: gooddelta 2nd April 2019, 02:16 PM

That Kate/Hatari sequence will be quite something *.*

Ha at Serhat. Poor Sarah McTernan.

Posted by: AdamAloud 2nd April 2019, 02:18 PM

Well North Macedonia are well and truly sunk now.

San Marino closing is iconic *.*

Posted by: Iz~ 2nd April 2019, 02:19 PM

SAN MARINO closing?! How fun.

On the other hand... dear god at that section from Latvia through to Denmark. At least they separated Ireland. I also like how North Macedonia is nearly at the end.

First thoughts on chances is that this really hurts Finland.

Annoyingly, between 12 and 13 looks like the place where they're putting the ad breaks so that'll dull the tonal whiplash somewhat!

Posted by: Cqmerqn 2nd April 2019, 03:17 PM

I swear to god if Cyprus is a shock DNQ...

Posted by: J▲hq 2nd April 2019, 03:39 PM

CALM IT. Alexander Rybak opened a semi last year and still managed to win that semi.

Poor Ireland sad.gif Was really hoping that slot would be given to Moldova or Latvia (Romania would've been too unfair I guess as they had it last year)

Posted by: Umi 2nd April 2019, 05:58 PM

Srbuk seems like a really bad opener to me honestly. I don't think anybody wants to start a show with a song like that.

Agreed. Show openers are supposed to gently tap you in, not a noisy statement track. Given it hasn’t got a massive hook, I no longer consider Armenia as a lock-in qualifier.

Posted by: Liаm 2nd April 2019, 07:20 PM

Oh wow, Armenia is certainly a real choice of an opener laugh.gif

Posted by: Cal 2nd April 2019, 07:30 PM

Here's hoping Armenia being the jarring opener makes Ireland stand out a tad bit more than it would with that slot. sad.gif

Posted by: LexC 2nd April 2019, 07:50 PM

Some disconnected thoughts I've had about the draw:

- Estonia seems like it's at risk of being memory holed in that last run from Australia to the end, they might be the biggest loser of the semi draw?
- Basically all of the borderliners in the first half being squished together (Poland-Slovenia-Czechia-Hungary-Belarus(and Serbia too to some extent)) is gonna be the big dogfight of semi one
- I'm presuming this means that San Marino and Azerbaijan have got suitably whacko staging
- I actually think Armenia kinda makes sense as an opener since it kinda starts out slow and then builds to a crescendo which works at song one since the audience is already paying attention whereas they might've tuned out if it was song five or six.
- Ireland were already up against it but that draw will have them sunk
- Austria at song 9 feels like it has the potential to be a wildcard qualifier that nobody sees coming if people appreciate a moment of calm between uptempo Sweden and ridiculous Croatia
- There's a lot of dramatic ballads in the back half of semi 2 and North Macedonia have it the toughest coming after Netherlands and before Azerbaijan

Posted by: Conanderella 2nd April 2019, 07:54 PM

portugal and netherlands third from last in both semis. what a great final top 2 it will be!

Posted by: RobBob 2nd April 2019, 08:14 PM

Yeah, people are really doing the most thinking this will sink Cyprus. Robin Bengtsson kicked it all off two years ago and finished top 5 in the final, it’ll be a great starter!

Posted by: Ryan. 2nd April 2019, 08:38 PM

Cyprus I'm sure will be perfectly fine, I was hoping Malta would get a much better draw than that though and I am nervous for them. I think Estonia benefit actually, the majority of people will gravitate to that one out of the group of 4 due to it being by far the most accessible. I expect top 5 in televote for Estonia, it's just whether the juries completely sink them a la Verona.

Posted by: Conanderella 3rd April 2019, 09:00 AM

Bish you are crazy. Sandwiched between the 2 of the most unique Eurovision songs... should I say EVER... and you're expecting some mediocre uninspired lazy radio by numbers song to stand out? Lolzxzx

Posted by: RobBob 3rd April 2019, 11:46 PM

But unique doesn't necessarily equal good in a lot of people's minds, you're assuming that people find unique to be better. I'd be pretty damn sure my Mum would just think the two entries surrounding it are "weird" but she'd respond well to a safe well performed radio pop song.

I'm really leaning towards Australia not making it though after watching the recap running order video. It's eclipsed by what follows it in both madness by Iceland for sure, and eclipsed in class by Greece.

Posted by: cantthinkofaname 4th April 2019, 12:21 AM

Yeah I've said it the entire time. Australia probably won't qualify for the first time this year.

Posted by: Umi 4th April 2019, 07:02 PM

The juries have carried Australia to the final every single year they've entered, no matter the opinion of the public. This year won't be any different.

Posted by: RobBob 4th April 2019, 07:11 PM

But Australia have always sent safe, well produced radio pop hits, we know the juries always go for that. See Cesar, Benjamin, JOWST, Nathan Trent, Ira Losco etc.

Posted by: LexC 12th May 2019, 09:16 AM

Posted by: J▲hq 12th May 2019, 10:45 AM

Posted by: AdamAloud 12th May 2019, 10:59 AM

Well someone has to come last

Posted by: *Tim 12th May 2019, 11:08 AM

That 2nd half is looking absolutely tragic already laugh.gif

Tbh I've always wondered why the drawing is done this way, instead of all at once. It seems a tad weird that semi 2 finalist can statistically be royally screwed or at a big advantage depending on the draws of the big 5 and semi 1 finalists

Posted by: cantthinkofaname 12th May 2019, 11:24 AM

If we look at when the winner has performed in the last 10 years..

2009 * #20
2010 * #22
2011 * #19
2012 * #17
2013 * #18
2014 * #11
2015 * #10
2016 * #21
2017 * #11
2018 * #22

We can safely assume the winner will be the 17th song to perform on Saturday. (Avg. 17,1)

Posted by: Iz~ 12th May 2019, 11:24 AM

They'd have the same overall chance to be drawn anywhere no matter when they are drawn, but because of the gap in doing so it can appear as if they had less chance. Taking their chances to get a particular half after the event's halfway done will naturally appear skewed.

Posted by: Burns 12th May 2019, 12:31 PM

Basically, if any of the favourites are drawn in the first half, they'll be placed as close to the interval as possible!

When did the last winner last perform in the single digits?

Posted by: AdamAloud 14th May 2019, 10:11 PM

Will Christer stick San Marino on first though? Think Czechia would be a good opener actually.

Posted by: Klumzee 14th May 2019, 10:11 PM

To be fair it's only the big five and Israel who have skewed it! That's a perfectly even draw for semi one. No major impacts from that draw, think Greece would be the main losers from that. The others would do similarly wherever they placed. Serbia could be the biggest winners from that draw. A 24/25/26th placed ballad tends to overachieve.

Malta's dead then.

Luca and Kate MH back-to-back is going to slay so hard. I'm gonna be deceased and resurrected at least 15 times in that 6 min period.

Fab for Kate though!! 12th is good for Duncan too, whilst I love Arcade I was kinda hoping for it to be like 3rd to crush it and really mix things up kink.gif

Oops at the UK also, I was beginning to think we might have somewhat of a chance with this to come top 20 (which basically would be a win for us) but it's going to get lost where it is for sure!

Malta can still probably do a top 10 from opening but I'd say it's probably not in contention for the win at this point.

That's interesting, I always assumed that they did. I guess there's no reason that educated guesswork couldn't resemble having knowledge of the results. Well, that gives me a bit more hope!

Yeah there's a fair amount of overlap with what they think did well in the semis with what actually did do well in the semis but its always an inexact science.

Like they put "Color Of Your Life" between "J'ai Cherche" and "Sound of Silence" thinking it would be an also-ran spacer and look how that ended up doing!

Going between Israel and the UK is pretty good for Norway I'd say!

I think Estonia could be a shock jury top 3.

Ya that's great for Norway as it will stand out.

If we look at when the winner has performed in the last 10 years..

2009 * #20
2010 * #22
2011 * #19
2012 * #17
2013 * #18
2014 * #11
2015 * #10
2016 * #21
2017 * #11
2018 * #22

We can safely assume the winner will be the 17th song to perform on Saturday. (Avg. 17,1)

Omg I think I just predicted my own country to win. I’m ok with that!

Australia might win this then, their slot is perfect.

Posted by: Sinner 17th May 2019, 10:33 PM

Australia will walk this, and I am not here for that.

Confused about Slovenia not being more popular. It's the most magical song that has been in the contest in years.

Posted by: SKOB 18th May 2019, 09:23 AM

Is it really though?

NED vs. AUS is interesting to watch

I’m guessing their attitudes during the SF press conference may have influenced the press voting?

I get where you’re coming from but do feel as a performance it lacks what Portugal managed in 2017 with the staging and that’s what it needs.

The performance wasn't amazing at the time but I have watched it a lot over the last few days (which is something that I understand not many non-supporters would do) but the fragility of the vocals gets over-shone by the sense of intimacy.

I actually found it dull the first time but all the re-caps and reprises during the semi-final helped me notice the music more than the vocals. It may well be outside the top 20 tonight. Personally, I think I've found my favourite ever Eurovision song.

Oh, I only just saw that. His answer was uncalled for, really. You're totally right.

It is magical on track, but it loses it's spark during the love performance. Same with A Matter of Time last year for me
