This is the Spotify chart thread for February 2019, the go-to topic for UK Spotify chart discussion! This month it's all about Ariana Grande as '7 rings' is still smashing it at #1 and her new album is expected soon which will almost certainly do huge numbers on Spotify.

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. The desktop top 50 may update before anything else so is always worth checking if the website is not up to date. However recently it has been known to not to do (even when the website has), so do check all sources. Also note that the Spotify Website will update before external websites (Kworb, LivePopBars). Occasionally there will be a delay in the Spotify chart updating which could even take days.

How often does the chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although this is not 100% guaranteed. Sometimes the top 200 on the website will update but without the top 50 on the app updating, and sometimes there will be no update at all.

How many plays on Spotify equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. (Spotify will let you play a song on repeat 600 times if you really want to).

The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread. For information on what songs are currently on ACR and what songs will be moving to ACR, refer to this thread.

How much does Spotify contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole, although good paid-for sales are still essential for making the very top of the chart in most cases. Spotify counts for at least half of all streaming sales (probably, we can't actually be sure on that), so doing well on Spotify is essential for doing well in the chart.

Why is my fave not doing well on Spotify?

Is it being promoted on one of Spotify's major curated playlists? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists, with over a million followers. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist.

Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped artists/releases such as Justin Bieber/Ed Sheeran/Drake who will of course enter straight at the top.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

'Thursday' isn't particularly high on HHUK so I doubt this HER version is going to give it much of a chart boost.

'Don't Call Me Up' should go top 3 soon with its #1 HHUK placement.

The new track from Billie Eilish is actually pretty good, its so different from what's in the chart at the moment, and it sticks out like a sore thumb, very dark and moody. Not keen on the video though it just freaks me out with all those needles, but the video does compliment the track so well.

bit of a shame that Ariana will be well ahead for the foreseeable future, 'bury a friend' would be a great #1 especially in the current era when anything that unusual doesn't usually get far.

7 Rings has already been too long at #1, such a bad track, but I guess this week Billie is still too far to be a serious competition, and next week Ariana releases her album, so 7 rings will get a bump on streams, so at least 2 more weeks at #1 for 7 Rings/Barbeque Grill

And the most annoying thing every time someone writes BAF, I can't fathom what track is that especially when its a new release. It just gets really difficult to recognise tracks especially with new releases.

(Would really love to see this going top 40 all memes aside, I see it's at #72 in the mids at the moment so it'll be on for a new peak at least - I'm guessing streams of this will have spiked significantly after the news about his arrest broke which was in the evening yesterday so it could be in for another big rise in the next update?)

Billie Eilish having a properly big hit sooner rather than later seemed pretty inevitable, I think someone in one of these threads before compared her rise to that of Post Malone, with 'when the party's over' being her 'Congratulations' and giving big boosts to the streams of all her older singles, so 'bury a friend' is her 'rockstar'. Am a little surprised at just how quickly this one got all the way up to #2 though!

21 still climbing *.* if only he was one place higher. (He was actually at #21 in the global Spotify chart yesterday lol and up to #17 today).

Looking back at his chart history I've just realised that his entire top 40 history to date consists of a huge #1 hit and a song that spent a single week at #40 ('Bartier Cardi'). Could have squeezed in another top 40 scrape but 'Bank Account' peaked at #41 for two weeks. </3

Fredo/Dave really not catching on near as much as Dave/Fredo! (I've given it a listen now and it's not that great so can't be too disappointed)

Strange that Disclosure seem to be credited as an artist on 'Talk' on Spotify but nowhere else? I guess it's so it shows up on their artist page etc. but if they wanted that then why not just officially credit it to Khalid & Disclosure everywhere.

it'll be interesting to see how well 'break up with your girlfriend' will do on Spotify, it should be leading the album tracks because it has an MV and is first on NMF - but it is also last on the album so will get skipped over by a lot of people who start listening to the album and turn off after the first few tracks. 'needy' may well be ahead in tomorrow's update as it is the first album track on the track listing (as seems to be the case on Apple Music for now) - 'imagine' must be getting a lot of skips as it is track 1 and those who didn't rate it may as well just start on track 2.

the video will probably keep 'break up' ahead of 'needy' in the official chart anyway, though I can't see it doing enough to kick '7 rings' off #1.

looks like 'thank u, next' is going to have one of those messy chart runs where it drops out of the chart for a few weeks because it's on ACR then too, as 'needy' and 'break up' will presumably act as her 2nd and 3rd (in whichever order) eligible songs.

Well at least we are spared from her doing an Ed Sheeran in the official chart, 9 songs in the top 10 is too much for anyone. Well done to her for such large numbers though.
Looks like she'll have the top 3 to herself anyhow, as 'needy' is well ahead of Sam Smith and Calvin Harris who would otherwise be its strongest competition.

Those are incredible numbers for Ariana, looks like she'll probably lock out the top 3 this week. Impressive that 'break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored' is confortably #2 already despite being the final song on the album, I expected her to start similarly to Drake where the first couple of songs on the album were initially the highest before 'Don't Matter To Me' and 'In My Feelings' overtook.

Poor AJ Tracey being overshadowed when he's done amazingly well with his album tracks too.

Ari has definitely had better music than this but I'm glad she's getting the monster success she's earned. Just wish BUWYG,IB could've leapfrogged 7 Rings and given her a third straight #1 hit from the album. Also not impressed Needy is eligible at the expense of Bloodline/BI - why couldn't they have been track 2??!!

Yeah, I honestly think there's merit to critical reception as a way of spotlighting something you might otherwise not give the time of day to (because 24 hours in a day isn't enough), but stan wars always distort them and only bring them up when they can be used to validate their opinion (see also: chart positions, sales, streams, views, followers, post engagements, everything). Ariana's metacritic score is very impressive sure, but how many people boasting that will also listen to Architects' album from just 3 months ago which has a slightly higher metacritic score. If metal core isn't your scene, too bad, the meta-score dictates it's essential listening. It's all just a symptom of musical opinions being highly subjective and based on emotions & pre-conceptions. All these metrics are the only manner of objective fact that can be used to dispel the haters. There's also a weird misconception that people believe telling someone their opinion is wrong, and directing them to the 'right' opinion will ever sway them. I have never, ever seen someone say they got into a band because someone told them that the band they like sucks and that they should listen to this band instead. Doing something like that just makes people revel in going against you.

(Note: I like Ariana and wish her the best, I haven't quite taken to the album but I'll inevitably give it much more time soon as I expect it to flood my national chart next week.)

I just used that score to highlight that it's usually generally lame music that gets trashed here (Ed Sheeran etc) when the success is questioned as I think most people think that Ariana puts out great and creative stuff. But quality is always subjective.

Obviously metal fans, for instance, might think differently, but I also know a metal fan that was pleasantly surprised (but he checks out new music quite a lot in general).

I actually really like it, but it's essentially a Bruno Mars track. Lizzo has faaaarr superior songs.


They still have the video release and their boosts are usually pretty big. I'm sure it'll be fine in the long run -- Capital haven't even started playing it yet.

HH being useless as usual
when Baby was doing well on iTunes and airplay, the song was stuck at like track #30 on HH for weeks and weeks

the minute the song was taking off radio and doing well on iTunes, then finally they moved the song to the top 10 on HH

The "new" Drake album is actually a re-release of his 2009 mixtape (it wasn't available on streaming until now) so I don't expect a complete takeover like a Drake album normally would - though I imagine we'll get a few songs making the chart.

The UK top 200 hasn't updated but none of the So Far Gone tracks are top 200 on Global or US Spotify, so I highly doubt they will have entered the UK chart either

What The Hell was probably in the top 100 on Spotify. Unfortunately, I don't think there were any archives from that time, but in 2011 the Spotify charts were generally similar to the iTunes charts, except with hip hop and alternative/rock songs doing a bit better, so I think it's very likely she's been in the top 100 before.

Most songs that don’t make the top 50 on day one have a sharp fall the next day.

I do wish if was not at the bottom of hot hits and was top 2 on New Music Friday though so it was off to a better start.

at the top, Ariana -I'm bored it's back as track #1
with kings of payola Picture This (who?) being track #3, they've been in the top 10 since the new year I reckon
Westlife is now track #10
and Little Mix have also been moved up to #17

the Picture This song has been on HH for like 3 months, always high, top 10 since January
there last Friday it was moved to track #4 and now even higher, track #3

just realised it's cos their album was out last Friday

but this has to be the biggest case of payola I've since, not even Nina Nesbitt comes closer

Picture This is really pushed by their label. They are lucky they are under Republic. Their tour manager now is Shane's former tour manager. Mark retweeted one member of the band on his account before. I don't like them. One Drink is not their best song. Just looked at their discography on wiki and the highest charting single in Ireland is one of their best.

yes HH was much better when it was 40-50 tracks
also makes no sense to have tracks for months stuck at the very end, like the last Lana del Rey track has been like song #70 for the last month, never moving up, of course she's gonna do nothing...

I find HH very detached from reality, in this sense I think Today's top hits or Pop Rising are much better

For instance, despite Giant being pretty popular, they never had it that high on HH, think the highest it's been is around track #10
Bury a Friend has also never been high, not even top 10... and now Katy/Zedd or Bruno/Cardi are also way too low
and then songs like Picture This or Anne Marie's Perfect to Me are super high for weeks when no one is streaming them
clearly the label is paying to have them so high, but not even then they become hits cos people wisely skip them

Is there basically a Spotify top 50, as in the top 50 most played songs each week by stream count on a playlist. That would be better as you couldn't pay for songs to be high up they would have to genuinely be popular. Updating it each week would hopefully keep it moving faster too.

Tbf Rise was only just taken off in December/January pretty sure Yeah ik it impacted here a good 2 months later than in the UK but still it was quite funny seeing it slowly bumped down to the bottom but still hanging around - kinda the same as what’s happening to Shotgun

The climb for TAU the past two days just shows how vital a high Hot Hits placement is. Hoping it'll crack the top 50 before Friday.

Lizzo languishing towards the lower end of the top 200 is annoying. I was hoping the Capital/R1 airplay would help more.

Dido was only big for about 3-4 years. Mariah and Bryan Adams had decades of big success. They're not really comparable.

As opposed to the HIGHLY intelligent and insightful lyrics found in all these other rural songs in the chart, of course.

I'm not surprised at all that the Migos solo albums have underperformed, I don't think even Migos fans want to hear solo songs by any of them. Offset is the most capable of the three at carrying a song without the other two but it's still not the same.

I can easily cherrypick 2 current hip-hop hits which have some more serious lyrical themes as well, say 'MIDDLE CHILD' and 'a lot'. If you look past the biggest mainstream hits I'm pretty sure hip-hop has vastly more to offer lyrically than pop does.

The biggest mainstream hits of all genres are generally going to be dumbed down lowest common denominator songs with no depth or great meaning to them (and that's not inherently a bad thing because music doesn't need to be about that). If you want a genre that really has almost nothing to offer lyrically look at dance music.

I'd love to see you try and write a track with better lyrics than "Funky Friday" - Dave's wordplay is very clever and slick, I don't see what's "silly" and "adolescent" about it? If anything, "Someone You Loved" is adolescent for pandering to that cliche heartbreak style lol

I mean, I don't think EITHER song is adolescent. Someone You Loved is a song that genuinely appeals to all ages - in the car today we had my 9 year old cousin, 19 year old sister, 21 year old me and 50 year old mum, and we ALL said we love that song. It's got a special something to it that separates it from the "cliché heartbreak" songs for sure.

Equally, Funky Friday is a shining gem from UK rap the past year IMO. I agree that Dave's wordplay is brilliant, it's packed full of hooks too and it stands out. We don't have to slate one song to praise another, though

About the Dave intelligent lyrics debate, Funky Friday is a very enjoyable song yes, but I find with this new one Black, and especially with Hangman which is still my favourite of his, that his much more intelligent raps seem to perform much worse.

I think Lewis is a great songwriter - it’s his vocal that’s the problem! I think SYL would be number 1 right now with a less strenuous vocalist.
Dave is also a great songwriter I think which makes him stand out amongst his peers.

I also disagree here, I've seen way more positive comments on his vocals than negative! His voice can be a bit much on some songs, I totally agree, but on Someone You Loved it's more restrained, and in line with the emotion you'd expect in such a song. It makes it feel much more raw. I'd be surprised if his vocals really were putting enough people off to make up a ~9k sales difference.

the problem with regular pop songs on Spotify is that they depend too much on playlist placing, l if this is moved up significantly on HH it will be a hit, if it keeps being song #77 or something, it won't, and it's even more difficult with pop artists that have been around for a while and who are more iTunes-friendly like Pink
urban acts don't have this disadvantage

if 365 was track #3 on HH instead of Picture This, it would be a hit

while artists who've been around more than 20 years get excluded or low-placed in all Spotify playlists :/

I don't have a problem with Pink's age but I don't understand why she's still relevant while Avril or Christina aren't. Most of her songs from past 10 years are just bland and uninteresting. I'd rather listen to Baby Shark than Pink, because that almost makes me laugh, thus creating some emotion for me. Pink's music could be replaced by white noise and I wouldn't even notice

Pink is much more active than Christina & Avril which I would say is the biggest factor. I do also think Avril and Christina’s output have both gone down, moreso than Pink’s, especially when it comes to lead singles for previous eras. Avril did lose plenty of fans over the drastic change in her sound for the best damn thing, something she has never recovered from.

Back to the topic, I do feel like Walk Me Home is Pink’s weakest lead single since there you go (and raise your glass if you count that). Still enjoyable enough, but not really stand out Pink.
