Why is it laughable to play songs that will appeal to their audience? laugh.gif Something like All You Ever Wanted really isn't Capital's thing. They're primarily a pop / dance station, I think it's pretty obvious by now?

exactly, every station has its target audience, it's the same for indie radio stations, X Radio or BBC6 won't play Steps or BTS and nobody is surprised

Technically BBC Radio 6 Music did actually play BTS last week when they decided to play pop songs on April Fools Day but that's a one-off I'm sure laugh.gif

It’s laughable because they discriminate by genre.

It’s really a public vs private provider thing which is why I love bbc because they have mainstream national stations which play a bit of everything in Radio 1 & 2 and don’t discriminate like the likes of capital do. And it’s not like Capital was always like that they used to play indie and rock just a generation ago. They have just become very Americanised in the past 20 years especially. All about audience/profits.

Do you think the same of Radio X then? Their "April fool" of playing pop music is the real joke and the prime example of people turning their noses up at other types of music.

Capital have moved with the times and, in general, play what their audience is actually enjoying. It's a pop/dance station and you won't find many pop/dance hits that they've ignored in recent times (though there's always a couple of examples, of course). Not every station has to play indie / rock songs, there are plenty of specialist stations for that and then there's Radios 1 and 2 to bring them to a wider audience. The idea of a pop/dance-oriented station seems difficult to understand for some reason!

Yes I do think it is but the reality is the reach of Radio X is a lot smaller than Capital.

I think your misinterpreting my arguement as being about ‘turning my nose up’ at certain genres when it’s not it’s about giving mainstream support to all types of music on all the stations with big audiences. Even Radio 1 only gives A List rotation to specific bands now such as Royal Blood which is good but a few shocks in there would be nice too.

Do Capital still claim they 'play all the hits'? If they've dropped that slogan then fair enough if they just want to be a pop & dance station but I have found their playlisting decisions laughable in the past when using that slogan while playing songs/artists that have made essentially no chart impact at all and avoiding chart hits that have even the slightest whiff of 'indie' (George Ezra being snubbed is the most egregious example).

And of course they avoid pretty much all rap, unless it's particularly a pop-based sound

One thing I will give them is they have sped up how quick they remove hits I remember before streaming some songs stayed on for a year!

The tagline is "The UK's No.1 Hit Music Station" so it doesn't promise to play all the hits anymore (which it certainly hasn't done for a while). George Ezra is one of the more surprising snubs, Shotgun was perfect Capital fodder yet got no support, but generally speaking they support most pop and dance hits.

I still think they need to remove some songs a bit quicker than they do. For example they still have ‘monster’ by Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes on their regular playlist and this left the chart a while ago now.

I'm with steve and Bré.. it's daft that Capital think their audience can no longer cope with anything remotely guitar-based, unless it's Ed Sheeran.

I can understand them not playing many rock bands, but Rag'N'Bone Man is extremely mainstream and commercial. Absolutely no reason to snub him. Surely they played Human?

Pretty sure they played the Rudimental remix of it not the original

Jade Bird didn’t last too long, quite surprised they added her anyway!
