Going to be big. Rap tune with an orchestral backing which is #1 in the US Spotify chart and quickly climbing in the UK. Really like the production of this, although I'm never going to not think of Ciara's 'Love Sex Magic' when it comes on as both tracks have the exact same first 2 seconds.
This really stands out a lot compared to Roddy's other recent singles which have largely been pretty standard trap stuff - glad this is the one that's properly blowing up for him.
#3 in the US officially today, please let this deny Maroon 5 of a #1 next week.
this week it's
1 Circles
2 Memories
3 The Box
Already so high on the Hot 100 with as of yet almost no radio presence (up 177% to 3.6 million impressions this week, compared to Posty and Maroon 5 being on 102.1m and 95m respectively). This could be a pretty long running #1 if it actually starts getting airplay, especially if competition remains as nonexistent as it currently is.
There is apparently a new Drake/Future collab coming out soon though which could of course be huge depending on what the song is like.
the difference across metrics couldn't be bigger
1. Circles - 102.1m airplay, 23k sales, 24.2m streams
2. Memories - 95m airplay, 25k sales, 17.7m streams
3. The Box - 3.6m airplay, 6k sales, 42.6m streams
The crazy thing is, The Box isn't even an official single from his album. It's not being promoted to radio and no music video as of yet.
It is big on TikTok though which is increasingly becoming practically as impactful as those things (especially for non-established artists, although Roddy had had a few hits before this one).
what I don't get, I keep reading it's not a single, no radio no video... but after being so successful, why not make it a single and send it to radio?
They're probably just being typically slow. "bad guy" was an instant hit but it still took nearly 3 weeks just to crack top 50 on US pop radio, and a further 2 months to go top 10.
This has an official lyric video now and apparently an official video is coming so I presume it is now being pushed as a proper single (I mean they'd be silly not to).
Making rapid progress up the chart in the UK up to #16 from #40 on Friday.
Blocked Bieber from debuting at #1 on Billboard looooooool
Good to have that confirmed - it did appear Roddy's lead was big enough that Bieber wouldn't be able to beat him even with all the push in the world but can never really tell with Billboard (the Hot 100 predictions on Twitter can be way out as they were when The Weeknd got #1 iirc). A victory for an actual organic and genuinely popular hit over shady and manipulative industry tricks ~
Would have been funnier if Bieber was not even able to get #2 but hey.
talent won!
Apparently it was actually extremely close...
Roddy: 68.2m streams, 10.9m radio impressions, 11k sales
Bieber: 29.3m streams, 50.9m radio impressions, 71k sales
So Bieber had a massive advantage in sales (helped by his various pushes for downloads and I'm pretty sure the multiple physical variants count to that too as they're bundled with a digital single, although he'd have beaten Roddy on downloads pretty easily regardless most likely in fairness) and more importantly a disgustingly large airplay advantage, Roddy clutched it by having the biggest streaming numbers since 'Old Town Road' (excluding Mariah's peak week which was a few million higher). Whew.
Roddy is getting there with the airplay numbers though, they did nearly triple from last week.
His album is also back at #1 in the US this week!
I'm surprised that I don't like this. It's usually the sort of thing I'd eat up but I just don't see the hype around it. It's pretty dull with no real hook or melody for me?
I just listened to the album and it's pretty fabulous.
'Start Wit Me' is incredible. That sample! *.* Same with 'Peta'. Simple but so effective.
Also it's SO refreshing to see an urban song that ACTUALLY has interesting production blow up.
Not getting this song at all, cannot fathom how it's flown to #1 but then I think that all too often these days
I heard a track of his called 'High Fashion' yesterday and I really liked it!
Definitely much prefer that to 'The Box', which I'm not getting the appeal of either.
Easy 3rd week at #1 in the US, it'll be there for a while until a proper challenger comes along - but for now it seems to have a clear lead
A James Hype VIP remix is incoming!
Has it missed its chance on getting the #1 in the UK?
Probably, unless it gets a viral video or big feature - or it somehow manages to avoid ACR longer than Blinding Lights and nothing else big comes along before then, but that doesn't seem too likely.
Shame as it would've been one of my fave Hip hop number one in years
Love this remix.
any news on the video? think it could be the final push to get the song to #1, otherwise not sure how he could get there
I really like this catchy tune, one of the better US trap hits recently imo.
MV is out
