It never happened in over 2 decades!
Gosh, it must've been really weird when that Mr. Blobby song returned to #1! We're sort of used to it now. I think The Wanted still have a chance at beating Bruno tbh. |

The previous occasion was unusual as it went like this 14/12/68 - Lily The Pink 21/12/68 - Lily The Pink 28/12/68 - Lily The Pink 04/01/69 - Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da 11/01/69 - Lily The Pink 18/01/69 - Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da 25/01/69 - Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da |

It's like in the European charts this year, Bad Romance, Meet Me Halfway and Tik Tok all had 2 runs and #1, and Alors on danse had 3, and they all overlapped each other, which was really strange (although this sort of thing happens often in the chart, because songs are released at different times in each country, which gives songs weird chart runs, especially since it also factors in airplay). |

That's what I thought at first but chartstats.com shows different charts for those two weeks. The Virgin Top 40 book agrees. |

Three Lions returned to the top again in 1998.
You should include it because the OCC now combine the sales for the 96 and 98 versions. You've also missed out the returns to #1 for 3 Elvis songs, George Harrison, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody... am I missing any? |

Three Lions returned to the top again in 1998. The records in the first post are those that returned to number one without the song dropping off the chart prior to returning to number one. Leaving aside the issue of Three Lions the other records you mentioned all took a re-release several years after the record originally reached #1 to return to the top.You should include it because the OCC now combine the sales for the 96 and 98 versions. The likes of Bohemian Rhapsody should not be included in this list. |

Leaving aside the issue of Three Lions the other records you mentioned all took a re-release several years after the record originally reached #1 to return to the top. I figured that, but that only explains why they're not currently on the list, not why they shouldn't be on there, if you get what I mean. They're still returns to #1, re-release or not, so I personally think they should be included. This post has been edited by ~ braysephone ~: 18th October 2010, 07:13 PM |

I figured that, but that only explains why they're not currently on the list, not why they shouldn't be on there, if you get what I mean. They're still returns to #1, re-release or not, so I personally think they should be included. I'd say that the likes of My Sweet Lord and Bohemian Rhapsody belong on a separate list of songs which have been number one on two different occasions. |

The return of David Whitfield's Answer Me was only as a tied charttopper with the Frankie Laine version of the same song. They tied because of relatively a poor sample size be insufficient to separate them, so in reality it may not quite have been a true return. Simarly Guy Mitchell's Singing The Blues was knocked off the top by the Tommy Steele version of the same song, then returned, then Frankie Vaughan's Garden Of Eden overtook it only for Guy return for one more week tied with Frankie.
I remember the huge surprise of Mr Blobby returning to the top for xmas 1993, as everyone expected Take That to retain the #1 with Babe. Nobody was more shocked than TT's singer/songwriter Gary Barlow who if I recall correctly was alleged to have responded with some colourful language on air when he was told. I wonder whether the different compilers had different tie break rules, sample weightings or some such that affect the number of occurences of returns, I say this because when the BMRB/BBC chart was instigated in February 1969 the returns completely cease and even under Gallup (1983-early 94) there was only Mr Blobby which was exceptional circumstances, being xmas week, but once the Millward Brown/CIN/OCC era becomes established they begin to reappear. What does anyone think? |

The small sample size means that most of the early number ones are questionable. All we can say is that they were the best sellers in the shops in the sample. |

What does anyone think? I may be one of the few people not surprised by Mr Blobby's return to the top, because Take That were already becoming first-week specialists, as everyone was soon to become. When the presenter's tease was "or has Mr Blobby returned to number 1?" I was virtually certain that would be what had happened. And first-week sales not being maintained was a cause of some of the other occurences. Nothing to do with samples or chart compilers. The more records hang around the more they hang around. |
