It's still will be the return of the Mack 4eva Joined: 1 February 2011 Posts: 53,747 User: 12,915	Racecourses and bookmakers in England were given a clear set of dates to work towards for reopening on Monday when prime minister Boris Johnson gave the first details of a timetable for leaving lockdown. Non-essential retail, which has for most of the pandemic included betting shops, will form part of phase two of the plan, with April 12 pencilled in as the provisional date for reopening if the figures showing the effectiveness of the vaccination programme continue to be positive.

Adrian McCarthy said he was depressed during lockdown and took the drug four or five times while drinking in a pub a day or two before the fixture. The 42-year-old had his riding licence withdrawn for six months by an independent disciplinary panel. Panel chairman James O'Mahony said the use of cocaine by riders was "pernicious" for the sport. In another case heard on Thursday, jockey Finley Marsh, 22, also had his licence withdrawn for six months.

Johnson, 43, revealed the surprise decision after finishing third on the Philip Hobbs-trained Brother Tedd in the 2m5f handicap chase at Newton Abbot, after which he stood down from his ride in the last race. The four-time champion rode 3,819 winners – a figure only bettered by great rival Sir Anthony McCoy – and claimed Cheltenham Gold Cup glory twice on Looks Like Trouble (2000) and Native River (2018) as well as many of jump racing's biggest races. He was awarded an OBE in 2019 for his services to the sport.

The Paul Nicholls trained 100-30 shot, ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies, won by a length and a half from Al Boum Photo at 6-4. Fakir D'oudairies finished 17 lengths back in third with 2019 winner Kemboy last of the four finishers. It is a third Gold Cup success for Nicholls after Neptune Collonges won in 2007 and 2008.

It's still will be the return of the Mack 4eva Joined: 1 February 2011 Posts: 53,747 User: 12,915	Thursday’s fixture at Southwell will be the track's penultimate one staged on Fibresand after its owner, Arena Racing Company (Arc), received planning permission to replace the all-weather surface with Tapeta. Permission for the change of surface was granted by the local council on Tuesday night with work set to begin following the course’s ladies’ day meeting on Sunday, August 15, which will be the last run on the unique Fibresand surface. Subject to trials being run on the Tapeta track, which Arc has installed at Wolverhampton and Newcastle, and inspection by the BHA, Arc said it was aiming to run its first fixture on the new surface on November 26.

A total of 41 recommendations including CT scans for overseas entries before and after arrival will be adopted. The 2019 Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck was euthanised after suffering a broken leg in the 2020 Melbourne race. His soundness was questioned in the weeks beforehand but this was unrelated to his fatal injuries, said the report. The Melbourne Cup, known as 'the race that stops a nation' and traditionally attracting a crowd of about 100,000 people, has been criticised over its safety record. There have been six equine deaths, all international runners, associated with the race since 2013.

Settled in midfield on the outside, St Mark's Basilica challenged down the outside to win at 9-4 from 80-1 shot Colosseo with 25-1 hope Breizh Eagle in third. St Mark's Basilica was due to be ridden by Pierre-Charles Boudot, but the champion jockey's three-month ban while indicted on rape charges resulted in Mendizabal picking up the plum ride on last year's Dewhurst winner. The half-brother to 2,000 Guineas winner Magna Grecia has always been highly regarded at Ballydoyle with O'Brien throwing the son of Siyouni into Group 1 company on just his second start – despite being beaten on his debut. He started his Classic campaign as he finished his juvenile one, with an impressive Group 1 victory and in doing so earned quotes of 9-4 for the Prix du Jockey Club, from 5-1 (cut from 11-4 immediately after the race), 4-1 (from 10) for the Irish 2,000 Guineas and 7-2 (from 12) for the St James's Palace Stakes.

Poetic Flare, under jockey Kevin Manning, was four and a half lengths clear of runner-up Lucky Vega, with Battleground in third. Now the 7-2 winner may head for a 'Duel on the Downs' next month with Palace Pier in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. Palace Pier, ridden by Frankie Dettori, earlier won the Queen Anne Stakes.

Last year's 1,000 Guineas and Oaks victor, ridden by Ryan Moore, held off Audarya to give trainer Aidan O'Brien a 75th career victory at the meeting. "We knew she was going to come on a lot for the run. She's very genuine and very brave," said O'Brien. Laura Pearson became only the fourth woman to ride a winner at Royal Ascot with victory on Lola Showgirl (12-1). She follows Gay Kelleway, Hayley Turner and Hollie Doyle after Lola Showgirl beat her David Loughnane-trained stablemate Ffion in the Kensington Palace Stakes

Williams has sought help to stop his drug use since the failed test at Wolverhampton races on 29 January, a disciplinary hearing was told. He had been placed on furlough during the Covid-19 pandemic and admitted making a "stupid mistake".
