And that's sales accrued since 1994! Not bad going.

But how? Its global streams on Spotify are only 23,000,000! Kylie has songs on much higher streams released since 1994 (I.e. that include streams AND sales) that have not gone platinum!

Yeah I’m a little confused as to how it’s gone Platinum. It was always a bit dodgy how it passed 1m sales when its 80s sales were about 845k. For it to now be on 1.4m+ means it’s managed about 400k in streams which just isn’t right.

There are multiple versions on streaming though, and the song appears on Jason and Kylie albums, various GH, PWL compilations, 80s/90s compilations, plus it would’ve got a boost from the Neighbours ‘final’ show and the cassette and vinyl release.

I remember when PWL digitalised all their music and put it on iTunes and download sites which was quite a big deal during the download boom so guessing it’s just had constant tickle sales.

It was only 19th on Kylie’s most streamed songs in the UK as of June 2023 and it was worked out the #10 song had about 100k sales from streams. I could maybe see it having managed enough to be certified Gold (even though it previously went Gold in the 80s) and it’s total sales be on 1.2m, but certainly it Platinum.

I came on here to say exactly this. It’s so easy for us to assume that a certification must be correct, but this certainly isn’t. Reading other forums, its downloads could be up to around 100,000 but certainly not significantly more; its physical sales are less than 10,000 from the reissue; its streams until a year ago were far less than 100,000 (‘Kids’ at number 10 is no more than 110,000 - so EFY at 19 will be significantly less). It’s unlikely to have even reached silver status since 1994.

Could they have granted it platinum status for being an official million seller? If so, that would be unprecedented.

Could it have just passed 200,000 Since 1994 and then mistakenly as its last certification was gold they’ve given it platinum?

The platinum status reflects its total not just since 1994! It has exceeded 1m in total so it’s just a certification update

It’s definitely meant to be since 1994, that’s the case for every album/single that was released prior to that year. That’s when the OCC took over and their database started from 0 sales for every title. Certifications don’t get updated at random, they’re automatically triggered by passing over a certain figure (in the case of singles it’s 200k/400k/600k and then every further 600k sold).

So on face value this Platinum certification is supposed to reflect that Especially for You has sold 600k since 1994, but it just doesn’t make sense that it could have done this. The annoying thing is that it’s highly unlikely that BPI will explain or rectify this. It wouldn’t be the first mistake they’ve made. I think it has to be the case that the OCC’s database has some errors, and that there’s something wrong with Especially for You.

It’s her 19th most streamed across all platforms as per this post:

Yes, sales awards are automatically granted however if artists, labels, management etc., want the actual disc/sales award they need to apply for it and pay for it too.

Let’s hope the certifications for her other hits start rolling in soon, weird how they waited so long to apply for Platinum.

Would really love another total’s update!

Stupid question is it 100 streams = 1 sale, for sales totals not chart purposes.

The label can't apply for Platinum; it's not the case that they just waited/that it happened ages agso. It happens automatically! As in, it being added to the BPI Certifications website that it's achieved it. As far as OCC/BPI is concerned, Especially for You crossed 600,000 sales on Friday.

What the label can apply for, if they wish to, is to have an actual physical award/disc for the artist/writers/anyone else involved in the song.

Regarding the issue with 600k, some of us are skeptical that it's actually possible for it to have done it from 1994 to now!

It makes no sense. I agree it can’t be 600k since 1994. It was only confirmed as a UK million seller in recent years and as we saw from that streaming chart it’s not achieved enough sales that way either.

Though of course it is correct that it’s now officially platinum. Weird how PWL never applied for one in 1989. It’s total sales ‘might’ be 1.2 million, perhaps that’s how the glitch has occurred though you’d expect other big pre 1994 hits to have random certs.

Edit….just checked and platinum used to be 1 million sales for songs released prior to 1989.
