Below is the list for 2015 and from it, 21 shows return in the 2016 list and there are a bunch of returning shows as well as debut series making their mark on the Top 40! The plan was for the deaths to be staged as a joint suicide pact. The series was controversial as it was criticised by the victim's families for exploitation. In Plaint Sight is also based on real life events, covering serial killer Peter Manuel who killed at least eight people in the 1950s. Again, the series was criticised by the victim's families for re-opening closed wounds. Brief Encounters focused on the beginning of Ann Summers in a comedic way. The series starred Angela Griffin and Penelope Wilton but despite its success in this chart and its consistent ratings, it was not renewed for a second series! Shetland is the first showing for BBC One and is a crime drama set on the Shetland Islands. It initially aired in 2013 for two episodes before being brought back for a longer 6 part series in 2014. The third series broadcast in 2016 was even more successful than this and it has been renewed for a fourth series. Home Fires focuses on the life of WI members on the Home Front during WWII. Despite its consistent success once again, it was not renewed by ITV for a third series.

BuzzJack Idol Joined: 8 December 2010 Posts: 50,975 User: 12,472	I watched the first episode of Brief Encounters and it was pretty enjoyable actually; character-based and uplifting - just right for the summer. Surprised it wasn't renewed because it got good ratings, especially when you consider it was the middle of summer.

This series saw the debut of a new family headed by Julie Graham. Series 9 is due to air on 10th March. Countryfile has been a surprise success after moving to Sunday evenings and has often matched overnight ratings for The X Factor. Indeed, its highest rating last year was nearly 9m! Midsomer Murders is the first series to increase its viewers year on year in 2016 despite airing for nearly 20 years! The rating includes one full series and the first episode of the next series that continued to air in 2017. Scott & Bailey returned in 2016 after a break in 2015 but it changed it up, only airing 3 episodes instead of the usual 6/8. It marked the creative end of the series. Grantchester stars Robson Green and James Norton and is a detective drama. It aired its second series in 2016 as well as a Christmas special.

It is set in the 1960s and stars a young version of Morse beginning his career as a Detective. Another successful series aired earlier this year and has led to a fifth series being commissioned. The second series of the new version of Poldark didn't quite hit the same highs as the first series, being ~700k down. Airing at a different time in the year, having more episodes and airing against tough competition in 'Victoria' (which is still to come) probably contributed towards this. However, it still hit a lot of headlines, many regarding a controversial rape/not-rape scene. The Voice UK took a higher fall year-on-year, falling 2m from the fourth series to the fifth. It was the last to air on BBC, with the sixth series airing on ITV now, and was the first without Tom Jones, with Paloma Faith and Boy George being the new additions. Former Liberty X star, Kevin Simm won the show but, once again, failed to gain that chart success. Emmerdale maintains its position from last year but increases its average audience by ~200,000. The soap has been widely praised over the past year, particularly for its experiments in storylines which has including a dementia POV episode. This helped them win their first award for Best British Soap at the British Soap Awards. Still Open All Hours returned for its second series last year and it perhaps shows that the best ratings are no longer scored at Christmas! The series increased its audience as the series went on and fell back down when it returned on Boxing Day. The sitcom is a sequel to the well-loved Open All Hours, starring David Jason as the new owner of the shop.

The show aired for two series last year BUT I think this figure just accounts for the second series that was a lot more successful. Anyway, the show features musical & entertainment guests as well as the unexpected star of the show, surprises and jokes from Michael and Celebrity Send to All, where Michael has control of the celebrity's phone and sends a message to all of their contacts! Marcella was a British attempt to emulate the style and success from Scandanvian TV shows such as The Killing and The Bridge, and was in fact written and directed by the creator of The Bridge. It starred Anna Friel former detective helping to reinvestigate an unsolved 11 year old serial killer case and it features some unreliable storytelling techniques. The success of the series has led to a second being commissioned. Eastenders falls slightly year on year by ~150,000 in a year that saw a handover in terms of executive producers. One of the most notable storylines last year was the bin collection being changed to fortnightly rather than weekly. The year also saw the death of Peggy Mitchell and the brief return of Grant Mitchell. The Great Sport Relief Bake Off, the spin-off to a series that is still to come, falls by over 1m year on year. The show sees four different celebrities each week compete to be star baker all in the aid of Sport Relief. The celebrities included Ed Balls, Will Young and Louise Redknapp whose agents must have the BBC on speed dial as all were stars of another celebrity show still to come. Cold Feet returned for a sixth series last year, its first in 13 years! In its original run, it was getting around 9m so it falls slightly short here but its still a great success for ITV and has resulted in a seventh series being commissioned. The time lapse allowed the show to explore life for people when they hit middle age and explored topics such as depression.

Pronouns: he/him Joined: 19 April 2011 Posts: 121,693 User: 13,530	Wow that's quite a drop for The Voice UK not surprised though, I found last series pretty tedious on the whole, barely watched it after the lives when Saturday Night Takeaway was a better alternative. Hoping ITV can make it more interesting this year. I really quite enjoyed Michael McIntyre's Big Show for a bit of light entertainment, I've always found him hilarious and I love the Send To All game! Didn't realise it was such a ratings hit actually but it's not hard to see why. I'd barely even heard of Cold Feet before last year but I really enjoyed the new series, glad it was a ratings hit still and has been recommissioned!

I wish Eastenders could get that sort of turnaround, but it gets pushed from pillar to post in the schedules and gets hit badly in the summer, which seems to also spoil the momentum leading to Christmas.

At the time, it was ITV's highest rating new show since September 2014 but has since been beaten by a show still to come! The series was commissioned for a second series but ratings did decline throughout the series so time will tell whether it will maintain its success. War and Peace was BBC One's ambitious drama that aired right at the start of 2016. It is the latest adaption of the famous novel by Leo Tolstoy and starred Paul Dano, Lily James and James Norton. The Missing was Keeley Hawes' third hit of the year with the series focusing on a brand new case than was seen in the first series. This time, the missing child returned although plenty of twists followed throughout the series. Side note, it was by far my favourite show of last year! The Apprentice aired for its twelfth series in 2016 but it shows no signs of slowing down, with its ratings being level with last year. Whilst the star of the US version may now be President, things have remained unchanged in the UK in regards to the shows format. Last year saw the teams take on a night shift, develop a virtual reality game and produce their own gin to varying results. Vera saw its ratings jump by around 2m year on year for its sixth series despite remaining at the same level for the previous five series. It was the first time that it aired in January/February which may have helped! The series focuses on DCI Vera Stanhope who is obsessive about her work and is driven by her own demons.

The panel saw the return of Louis, Sharon and Nicole as well as Dermot as host. It marked the first time the original judging panel were together since the fourth series (back in 2007!!). The show maintains the same position as 2015 but sees a slight fall in ratings. Once again, the lowest rated episode was the first part of the final! Victoria was ITV's biggest drama of last year which showed it did its job as the replacement of Downton Abbey. The show stars ex-Doctor Who companion Jenna Colman as a young Queen Victoria, following her accession to the throne and her marriage to Prince Albert. Following its fairly consistent ratings, the show has been commissioned for a second series and Christmas special and is expected to last six series! Coronation Street is the longest running show in the list and also the longest running soap in the world! It is one place higher than last year but actually saw a slight decrease in ratings overall. It was another soap that saw a change in executive producer last year and 2016 also brought the sad death of the show's creator Tony Warren. Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway's 13th series in 2016 saw an increase of more than 1m viewers year on year, claiming some of the lost viewers of The Voice UK! Last year saw new features such as 'Who Shot Simon Cowell' as well as an ambitious farewell in its final episode with it being broadcast live from a cruise ship in the Mediterranean Sea!! Death in Paradise is another long running show that sees no signs of slowing down. Each week, there is a new death to be investigated with around four suspects, at least one of which will be exposed in the final act where all the suspects are gathered together as Kris Marshall runs through the events around the death in true Agatha Christie style.

It aired its nineteenth series last year and followed a steady trend of increasing ratings. The Night Manager was another bold BBC One drama that starred Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman. It was based on the book by John le Carré and sees a hotel night manager and former soldier being tasked with infriltraing an arm's dealer's inner circle. It was filmed across some exotic locations and was a big hit across the world, including wins at the Emmys and Golden Globes. Happy Valley aired its second series last year, exploring the fallout from the events of the first series as well as setting up new storylines. The series follows a Police Sergeant in West Yorkshire who, in the second series, is linked to a string of murders whilst she is investigating a human trafficking operation as well as another murder and being targeted by the lover of the person she sent to jail! It is a trouble town indeed.

Obviously it's declined a bit but not as dramatically as most people would have you think The success of Saturday Night Takeaway is great to see, really impressive having been on air for so long now too!

It manages to sneak into this list due to airing 3 episodes last year, one on New Year's Day and Christmas Day as well as a special live episode in the summer. Britain's Got Talent is still riding high in its 10th series even if it will never reach the same heights as the phenomenon it became during the Diversity/Susan Boyle year. The success may be down to its popular panel remaining unchanged for the fifth year running, who were also joined by David Walliams' mum for one round of auditions. Richard Jones became the first magician to be crowned winner of the show after his army inspired act. Call the Midwife is a period take on 24 Hours in A&E as it continues to explore the public's love for watching births on TV. I don't have a clue if there was anything different about the fifth series that last year aside from different stories behind people and their pregnancies.
