holy f*** this isn't going to be good for Japanese politics (and while he's not confirmed dead quite yet, Japanese media are using terms that basically mean he's dead) |

I know personal assault crime is extremely rare in Japan so this is very unexpected. Don't follow Japanese politics - anything he did that made him a target?

I know personal assault crime is extremely rare in Japan so this is very unexpected. Don't follow Japanese politics - anything he did that made him a target? Well, he is a right-wing nationalist who held the Japanese premiership for an awful long time and pioneered his own economic style and basically was the embodiment of the ruling party until he had to resign a couple of years ago for health reasons. Which it is to say, if there is a high-profile target in Japan, he's it, but it seems at this time that there wasn't much of a motivation. Nor indeed, security, most Japanese politicians have limited levels of protection when they engage with the public. Their upper house elections are this weekend and while he's no longer the PM, he's still basically the biggest figure in Japan, and his death would leave a huge vacuum in the Japanese political space, very much into unknown territory for Japan in a nation that really values stability. |

Yikes. Japan is one of the last places you'd expect something like this to happen. RIP.

Absolutely horrifying. Japan is very much a Country that prides itself on safety and security (I guess if you’re a male anyway) so the ripple effects of this are going to be massive soul searching.
Obviously my thoughts are with Prime Minister Abe‘s family and close circle. Horrific thing to happen to anyone |

Awful, you wouldn't think something would happen like this in Japan.

Sad news. Obviously didn't have continuing high security like ex British PM's or US Presidents do or he wouldn't have been so close with a gun.
