Tracks are starting to stick around in the chart longer as we get deeper into the year: I've also just started a new job that leaves me much less time to curate new things on my playlists in between other responsibilities. This week, Empire of the Sun become the first wholly male act to take the top spot - a rarity for BuzzJack, perhaps - since I started putting up weekly charts. They're in small company for my taste in general this year; probably only coming up against Years and Years, Zayn and Nothing But Thieves.
This week's chart has a few double-up appearances from Ariana, Carly Rae Jepsen, Frank Ocean, Roosevelt and Bear's Den. Brooke Candy and Bat For Lashes are high re-entries from success earlier in the year, while Ariana's Side to Side logs more chart weeks in a new run following her #3 peak when the album released earlier this year. Surprised to see Minaj and Ari getting on so well and working together actually, given that Ari's other biggest chart hit in the UK is with the rapper's nemesis Iggy Azalea. Few new entries this week; highest comes from strength-to-strength Sia's The Greatest ft. Kendrick Lamar, the lead from her hurriedly-announced eighth studio album, following her most recent release just this year. More on other new entries this week as well as some selected links below. Smashing into the top 5 this week comes YoungR's Out Of My System, a track which really has upcoming pop smash written all over it. The artist himself is pretty mysterious, apart from being British, on the rise, and fairly stylish - as celebrities tend to be. This has a bit of a feel of Closer and Don't Let Me Down about it, and was recently remixed by Galantis - although I prefer the original. Out Of My System is this week's #5. After weeks of me waxing lyrical about Bear's Den, finally some of my standout tracks are released to youtube and so become linkable. The band is on their second album, and I never really came across their first. This is lush though; almost a country feel to it, Friendly Fires meets Mumford and Sons. I've just realised it's almost reminiscent of Empire of the Sun too - obviously I was filling a hole before the real thing came back in. This is really one of my top discoveries for this year; well worth a try. And from smooth to rap. Brooke Candy pairs up with past collaborator Bleachers on Changes, a slightly older release which I only came across this year as Ms. Candy launched her comeback and sonic shift with Happy Days. This is also one of my standouts this year; a more pop-rap combination than the harder, explicit stuff Brooke was originally known (and reviled) for. I'm expecting this to place highly in my end-of-year wrap-up. What more can you say about Sia? From relative unknown to worldwide success in less than five short years, and while in her 40s no less, the Australian is an inspiration. I'm pleasantly surprised by just how much I like this one off the bat, given it took Cheap Thrills months and months to even register with me at all. Good on her. Kendrick also picks a good collaborator to cross over into pop again - if you're going to do it, might as well do it right. Expect this to rise. Ingrid who? The American has had some success on the US billboard charts and caught me with Girls Chase Boys last year. I checked out her new album on a whim, but as it didn't particularly strike me, I went back to the previous and came across this gem. It's cheery pop and pleasant, hitting the same appeal with me that Tori Kelly did around this time last year. And if Christine and the Queens can see success with a two-year-old song in 2016, why not others? Ingrid Michaelson debuts this week at #30. Debuting close behind at #34 it's the return of prior hitmakers this year Bipolar Sunshine (of DJ Snake collab fame), this time pairing up with Gryffin. The latter I know better as a remixer, charting enjoyable remixes with me of Chvrches, Maroon 5, and Banks - in the latter case rescuing a song that otherwise didn't catch me at all. A little research says he's coming to success in the mainstream charts too, which I always like to hear. And finally, we close out the week how we opened it, with a wholly male indie act. Everything Everything launch a third album campaign with this song, pleasantly reminiscent both of 80s music and a lot of the British indie invasion of the mid 2000s. Pounding drums, actual instruments, and even some falsetto, and Everything Everything have finally caught on with me, after years of my friends telling me they'd be right up my street. Yet to decide on that for sure, but this is definitely a promising start. As always, comments, questions, opinions welcome. Any recommendations would also be pretty cool! til next week This post has been edited by 360Jupiter: 24th September 2016, 07:16 AM |

Thanks JSG! I must check 'The One' out - I wonder if it's in my To Listen list. I'm updating playlists today so that would be a good addition as the other Carly tracks go on their way.
Also good to see some love for Annabel Jones! Write-up is up now folks - I just had no time yesterday. Enjoy! |

So many new discoveries for me to check out this week!
I need to hear that one from Empore Of The Sun as I was a big fan of their debut album. |
