There’s another film that comes out next week called the secret kingdom and when I saw it was being released next week, I said to myself that they should bring it forward a week so that there’s at least one new release tomorrow instead of none

Most school summer holidays begin next week though, so I don’t blame them really. I saw the trailer before Elemental and it did look *very* cheap though.

There are literal memes of “Barbie’s intended target audience / Barbie’s actual audience” it’s very similar to the Gentleminion trend that happened during Minions release last year. It’s gonna appeal to everyone.

Why wasn’t Ariana Grande approached to record for this soundtrack, it would have been a good move.

Perhaps she was and turned it down.

89% on Rotten Tomatoes with 107 reviews so far… legit cries for awards in a LOT of the reviews. For Greta, Margot and Ryan… I wonder if that will come to fruition?

I’m so hyped!

Predictions for Box Office are $75 million (the most conservative) to $140 million (the most outrageous) for opening week.

I think it will easy clear $100+ million with those reviews and hype!!!

Just got back and I mainly loved it… the script was super sharp, very clever and thought it was all perfectly pitched. It both managed to satirise the problems with Barbie whilst also celebrating the feminist possibilities so well. It got the tone just right, whilst managing to have lots of laugh out loud moments.

My criticisms were mainly that although some parts were laugh out loud funny, there was definitely a bit of dip in the humour quality in the scenes in the ‘real world’ Barbie headquarters. Some of that was a little too much SNL type cringe humour for me. Also I wasn’t sure if I loved the ending? It seemed a little off kilter with the rest of it and I wouldn’t have chose that ending personally.

I would give it a 7.5/10 personally.

now the projections have Barbie at $150 million ohmy.gif (biggest of 2023) and Oppenheimer at $75 million which is going to be the biggest for Nolan.

I absolutely LOOOOOVED this! It was everything I kinda expected and wanted it to be! My only issue was the structure of the movie felt a bit "quick". But I'd rather it was like that rather than have simple situations over simplified and outstay their welcome in dragged out scenes. I also think, for me, the humour actually managed to stay at a surprisingly high and consistent mark for its entire runtime. Comedies usually fall so flat for me after the first half, especially ones that tackle social commentaries, but I actually think some of the strongest comedic moments and laughs were in the 2nd half of this movie.

I must see this again soon. The replay factor is so strong!

I agree that the boardroom humour fell a bit flat but I found the script really funny and well thought out aside from that. I loved the deep themes that were explored, like spelling out the uncomfortable truth of the patriarchy in Gloria's speech or questioning the feminism behind Barbie, while also being such a fun movie. It felt like an event going to see it today, nearly everyone was dressed in pink (myself included x) and it was the most packed out I’ve seen the cinema in a long time. Suitably impressed on the whole 💖

Margot and Ryan worked so well as Barbie and Ken 👏

I really liked it but I thought it fell surprisingly flat with the audience I watched it with. I felt like I was the only one enjoying most of the jokes. Everything’s over-the-top and potentially the messages are a little too on-the-nose at times but it’s brilliant in being nothing like you’d expect from a big summer box office movie based on Barbie. I do wonder if it will actually appeal to younger children though, the references will obviously go over their heads, but the plot doesn’t feel like it will be interesting to them.

I probably would say it’s currently my least favourite of the 3 but this has firmly established Greta Gerwig as one of (if not) my favourite directors. She’s the only one I can think of that has a 100% batting record for me.

I saw it today and was very disappointed.

Felt like it didn’t quite hit the note on the “patriarchy / feminism” angle it set out to and it also wasn’t really funny it was a bit slapstick in parts. I feel like the bones of a good movie is there but they didn’t quite get it. Margot and Ryan were both great as Barbie and Ken though.
