Wish they'd actually RELEASE the material - the UK didn't get 'Thinkin' About You' either, and the mixtape was available for free; I feel like for Ocean to really be making any money from all this people need to buy something. The oddity of Ocean is very Kanye in places, I hope he continues this cartoon/retro appeal for the entire album release though, it's certainly refreshing.

Can't get enough of 'Pyramids', I think it;ll become my favourite of his soon enough...and that's really saying something!
Expecting this album to be one of the albums of the year.

QUOTE
While the Brill Building is mere blocks away from Def Jam's offices in midtown Manhattan, I like to think the location of yesterday's listening session for Frank Ocean's major-label debut-- Channel Orange, out July 17-- was based on more than mere convenience.
Countless American classics were born in the building's hallowed halls. So when a group of journalists sat down in a small, dimmed studio to take in the album, there was already a sense of history in the air.

Frank was there, his back turned to us, slowly bobbing his head along to the music. Before he played the record, he tested the sound system with a few seconds of Arthur Russell's "Just a Blip". He didn't speak much. Holding an apparently specialized drink made for the occasion, he deadpanned: "They said this drink is called Channel Orange... that's cool." While he's appreciative, it seemed that such party-planner details don't mean very much to him.

Much like last year's Nostalgia, Ultra, the lushly produced songs on Channel Orange are connected by tape-damaged interludes of dialogue and sound effects and warped snippets of tracks, giving things an intimate, homemade scope and feel. The record begins with an upgraded version of "Thinking About You" (now with gorgeous strings), and also features previously-heard tracks "Forrest Gump", "Pyramids", and "Super Rich Kids". A distorted version of the Tumblr-leaked track "Voodoo" could be heard underneath the album's outro.

Elsewhere, Ocean offers left turn after left turn, from psychedelic soul a la Sly Stone, to D'Angelo-style, keyboard-based R&B, to a politically-charged track delivered over a nimble beat reminiscent of A Tribe Called Quest, to something akin to a spaced-out epic rock ballad in which a conversation with a cabbie inspires Ocean to ponder some of life's big questions.

Needless to say, this is not your typical major-label R&B record. So when Andre 3000 showed up to offer some guest rapping and singing near the end of the album, it made a hell of a lot of sense.

Seriously cannot waittt for this. Why does it have to be released when I'm away? Gah.

So much respect. That note was so heartfelt. I didn't think I could love him even more than I do but I was proved wrong.

Awww so heartbreaking :''(

When was he homophobic? A particular lyric of 'We All Try' says the opposite ('I believe that marriage isn't / Between a man and woman but between love and love').

I think they are getting it because Frank is part of Odd Future who have been accused of homophobia, especially Tyler The Creator in his solo songs with the constant use of the word 'faggot' along with loads of other slurs.

Weird.

"Ocean's fellow Odd Future member Tyler, The Creator later showed his support for Frank, tweeting: "My Big Brother Finally F**king Did That. Proud Of That N**ga Cause I Know That S**t Is Difficult Or Whatever. Anyway. Im A Toilet." "

Um, yeah. It's not all THAT supportive is it?

Nevertheless that note has made me want to hear more of his stuff. That and the fact that No Church In The Wild is the only good best single released from Watch The Throne so far. Is Nostalgia, Ultra good?

It's a very good album/EP/Mixtape/whatever it's really called! 'There Will Be Tears' is my favourite, still. But there are some other brilliant songs on there. Like 'American Wedding', 'Novacane' and 'Strawberry Swing' (as well as the obvious 'Swim Good').

I think I love it so much, because I see that album as the album Taio Cruz really should have launched with after 'Departure'. Not 'Rokstarr'. (As much as I like/liked that album at the time)

Yes. I would very much advise a download of Nostalgia, Ultra, even if it just is for 'Swim Good', 'American Wedding' and 'We All Try'. Every song is brilliant though and such growers.

lmao. I was expecting this thread to be bumped today. kink.gif At least he's getting new fans though. biggrin.gif I can honestly see his album getting to #1 in the US at this stage! And it's really brave what he's just done.

Tyler the Creator obviously isn't homphobic. Not only Frank Ocean, but Syd tha Kid from the label is openly a lesbian. If someone hates gay people, they don't willingly choose to be close friends with two of them... We'll see if Frank gets dropped from the label or not (although he clearly won't be, since Tyler has known for ages anyway, and he's been fine with another member of the label being openly gay for ages already).

Haven't been around buzz jack for a minute, but thought i'd swing by to see people's opinions/reaction to Frank's letter. I can honestly say compared to the twitter back lash and american based forums that you're all a breath of fresh air. Honestly. Nostalgia, Ultra is an absolute master piece and it is an absolute sin that he gave it away for free (I know he had his reasons, but still!) i've had it on repeat for months and I still ADORE it. Channel Orange will imo (and as someone else mentioned) probably exceed all expectations. I do find it quite weird listening to him sing about a male (Forrest Gump, youtube it!) but only because no one has ever really done it before, and it's something i've always questioned as to why not. My hat's off to Frank, what he did is incredibly commendable, and i'm a proud fan of hip hop today. I don't think it will have a massively negative effect on album sales, if anything it will boost them. He will have lost a chunk of pig ignorant fans, but they're probably the type to illegally download his work anyway! Swings and round abouts!
